The Priceless Kitchen & Bathroom Supplement
A tiny bathroom can still make a huge
impact, as Aston Matthews explain
Most British
bathrooms are
no bigger than a
double bed, so although we
might all aspire to a grand,
spacious bathroom, the
reality is often very different.
However, having a small
space doesn’t mean you have
to compromise on either
practicality or style.
This bathroom, in a
Victorian apartment,
is compact in size and
without a window there
is no natural light. But
after a makeover that
celebrates the high ceiling
while introducing a bold
paint colour and statement
wallpaper, this space is
now a joy to use. And with
both a bath and shower,
ample storage and elegant
brass fittings it has added
value to the property too.
The starting point for this
design was the large-scale
panoramic wallpaper that
the client first spotted in
Aston Matthews’ bathroom
showroom. The design,
called Milk & Honey,
features tropical plants
and birds in a palette
of grey, blue and burnt
orange. From here a rich
blue paint was chosen, a
bold choice in a small
space, but with
the tall ceiling and deep
coving it works perfectly.
A false wall, to conceal
the toilet cistern, allows for
a decorative shelf, which
is illuminated by lights set
into the large wall cupboard
above. Additional storage is
provided by the Geo basin
unit which was lacquered
in a bespoke blue to match
the walls. The side of the
bath and the fluted glass
shower screen are also in

this matching blue.
Bringing additional
warmth to the scheme,
brushed brass taps and
shower fittings – from
the Astonian Original
collection – were chosen
plus a matching mirror,
heated towel radiator and
even a brass toilet flush. The
metro tiles are in off white
with the palest hint of pink,
which again adds warmth
and, by arranging them in
an attractive herringbone
pattern, a fresh dynamic is
brought to the shower area
and floor.
