STEAK
COMBO!!
Hitting the
Bullseye
By Sarah Slayman
Staff Writer
Melissa Reed has a newfound passion
for axe throwing and is paving the way
for women in the sport as she heads to
the World Axe Throwing League
Championship this April.
Within two years of throwing her first
axe, Reed has developed her skills
enough to be drafted to global competition.
In March of 2022, the Hilltop resident
traveled to Tennessee with her husband,
Ray, to spend time with family and
decided to casually go throwing for the
night. They had so much fun that upon
returning home, they began searching for
a local place to enjoy together. Reed and
Ray joined another couple at Throw
Nation in Dublin, the only World Axe
Throwing League certified venue in
Columbus. Reed took the first throw and
nailed the bullseye. A nearby coach
noticed and encouraged her to join a
league. She and Ray returned the following
week and haven’t looked back since.
Reed has lived on the Hilltop for the
past 28 years. She and her husband have
spent the last few decades raising their
children and spending their nights shuffling
kids to and from practices. This was
now something for them.
As Reed continued showing up to participate
in various leagues and competitions,
one thing became clear - she was
out numbered. At times, Reed was the
only woman in the game, and she initially
found that intimidating. Over time
though, she noticed just how welcoming
the throwing community was, and
became a voice that inspired other
women to push past any presuppositions
they had and enjoy the sport with her
competitively.
The number of women participating at
the venue continues to grow, and Reed
has found herself leading an all women
league weekly on Thursday nights.
“It is so special to me to be on a team
full of women,” she said.
Reed particularly enjoys watching the
process of different women coming in,
learning they’re good at something, and
excelling.
Hilltop resident Melissa Reed heads to the World Axe Throwing League World
Championship this April.
Outside of her success in growing the
community’s diversity, Reed has scored
exceptionally. She has been participating
in competitions since 2022, and due to her
high performance, was drafted to compete
in the World Axe Throwing League
Championship April 18-21. The competition
will take place in Tulsa, Okla. where
she will travel with seven other Throw
Nation members to complete.
“It’s still so hard for me to wrap my
mind around the fact that I’m one of the
best in the world and accomplished that in
less than two years,” said Reed.
In preparation, Reed is finding herself
on site six nights a week. She said she has
immense support from her Throw Nation
community, and that greatly contributes
to the narrative of community being the
crux of this sport to her.
“It’s family to me,” she said.
Police report high
rates of domestic
violence on Hilltop
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
A local law enforcement official says
domestic violence cases are trending
upward in the Greater Hilltop area.
Sergeant Fred Brophy with the
Columbus Division of Police attended a
recent Greater Hilltop Area Commission
meeting to discuss crime numbers from
January. He told the members of the local
advisory board that he was alarmed by the
number of domestic violence incidents that
had occurred, particularly in comparison to
all other serious crimes.
According to the division’s liaison to the
westside, there were 32 reported cases of
domestic violence incidents last month. He
said there were likely many more acts of
domestic violence that went unreported.
“If we had 32 incidents that we
absolutely know of, we know that the
absolute numbers are significantly higher
than that.”
Compared to the other reported crimes
that have taken place in the area over the
same period of time, the 32 known cases of
domestic violence incidents were higher
than the number of all other serious crimes
combined. They include:
•12 reports of burglaries
•six reports of guns discharged into
habitations
•six reports of robberies to individuals
•Two reports of felonious assaults
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Continued from page 1
Reported cases of domestic violence incidents even
surpassed the 21 vehicular thefts that occurred.
With the exception of the cases of domestic violence,
Brophy said all other crimes appeared to be lower than
average. However, he said he is “alarmed” by the sheer
amount of known acts of violence against family members,
spouses, and other intimate partners.
“If all of our other crime numbers are down and this
one is up, it just shows that there is a trend,” he said.
Commissioner Malik Moore asked whether areas
other than the Greater Hilltop community were experiencing
an uptick in domestic violence cases.
Brophy said it was occurring all over the city.
“We are not alone in this,” he said.
Brophy said he could not give a reason as to why
there have been so many reported cases of domestic
violence incidents in the local community or the surrounding
communities. But he said he does know
something has to be done now before it can get worse.
“We know that our homicide rates related to domestic
incidents were significantly higher last year than
they have been in the past,” he said.
According to city of Columbus officials, 25 people
lost their lives to domestic violence-related homicides
in 2023. In comparison, seven people died in domestic
violence-related homicides in 2022.
Brophy encouraged those who are experiencing
domestic violence to seek assistance. He also encouraged
the community to come together to help these
individuals find safety.
“This is my ask of our general citizenry: If you know
somebody or if you are somebody that is in a situation
people get out of these types of situations.”
He offered these two numbers from LSS CHOICES
for Victims of Domestic Violence, the only domestic
violence shelter in Franklin County: 614-224-4663
(HOME) and 614-224-7200.
The first number (614-224-4663) is the crisis hotline
for LSS CHOICES. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. The hotline is staffed by trained individuals who
can provide safety planning as well as referrals based
on the caller’s needs. The second number (614-224-
7200) is the non-crisis number that can also be used for
general matters.
CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence began
its service to the central Ohio community in 1977. It
was one of the first programs in the state to address
the needs of abused women and their children.
CHOICES offers a variety of services for victims of
intimate partner violence. They include emergency
shelter to give refuge for victims and their children in
an undisclosed and highly secure setting; community
and legal advocacy assistance; crisis counseling; and a
kennel for pets. Through a partnership with Columbus
Humane as an extension of their Safe Haven for Pets
program, CHOICES has room for four dogs, eight cats,
and pocket pets. Additional space is also available at
Columbus Humane.
The shelter currently has 144 beds. The Westside
Messenger reached out to CHOICES to see if there was
space readily available for those who want and need to
escape violent spouses and intimate partners.
According to its spokesperson, the shelter
census changes daily so it is not possible to
know if they are at capacity for anytime
besides for today.
“Rest assured that we work with each
person who calls and their individual situation
to figure out what is the best and
safest course of action,” said Jennifer
Hamilton, the director of marketing and
communications for Lutheran Social
Services of Central Ohio. “We never turn
away someone who is in high danger. We
are the only domestic violence shelter and
hotline in Franklin County, so if someone is
experiencing intimate partner violence,
they should reach out to CHOICES, and we
can help, whether that’s coming to the shelter
or another location or safety planning
other options.”
Additional hotlines that can be called
are the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, 1-
800-934-9840, and the National Domestic
Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE).
The latter number can also be used for
those who perpetrate, or are thinking about
perpetrating, acts of domestic violence or
intimate partner violence. Their trained
staff can try to offer strategies to help individuals
calm down and de-escalate the situation.
District brings on new buses
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
South-Western City School officials
have ordered new vehicles for one of its
most vital service departments.
At its meeting on Feb. 12, the board of
education announced it had accepted a bid
from Cardinal Bus Sales and Service Inc.
that will allow the district to obtain 10 new
school buses for the transportation department
at a cost of $1.18 million.
Under the terms of the agreement, the
district will receive:
•Four 78-passenger school buses
•Three 48-passenger buses with lifts
•Two 30-passenger buses with lifts
•One 30-passenger bus
The board will also allocate an additional
$29,400 to provide radio mounting services
with programming and digital video
systems for each of the new school buses.
The resolution to approve the purchase
of 10 new school buses does not mean there
is an immediate need to replace any of the
buses within the fleet, say district officials.
Instead, the move to purchase new school
buses is part of the annual replacement
cycle to maintain the strength of the fleet.
“While the oldest bus in our fleet currently
dates back to 2006, it is important to
continue to cycle in new models that will
come with less routine maintenance needs
and generally increased safety features,”
said Evan Debo, the district’s executive
director of communications.
The district believes the new buses
could arrive next year but they have not
received a specific time frame from
Cardinal Bus Sales and Service Inc. as it
pertains to the actual delivery.
“At this juncture, lead times on the production
and delivery of new buses vary
based on the type,” said Debo. “Some may
be in a few months, while others may be
well into 2025; however, starting the ordering
process now helps to ensure that we do
not extend such wait times moving forward
and stay on time with our vehicle replacement
cycle.”
Overall, the district says the transportation
department’s school bus fleet is in good
condition.
www.columbusmessenger.com
“The current state of the fleet itself is in
relatively great shape thanks to the district’s
ability to leverage grant and financial
resources over time with our natural
replacement cycles,” said Debo. “In particular,
heading into the 2021 school year we
were able to replace approximately 13.8
percent of our fleet most recently.”
According to Debo, the district currently
has 210 school buses in its fleet. They
include:
•66 84-passenger buses
•26 78-passenger buses
•66 77-passenger buses
•47 ADA accessible buses
•Eight Microbuses
•Three 65-passenger buses
A majority of the fleet was built after
the year 2015.
In other news related to the transportation
department, the district is seeking
substitute bus drivers for the current
school year and for the upcoming school
year.
At its meeting last month, transportation
supervisor Tim Cox reported that the
district currently has 18 substitute bus
drivers — eight of which are solely designated
as field trip drivers.
The district is currently covering a
majority of the expenses to help those seeking
employment as a substitute bus driver
obtain their Commercial Drivers License.
They are currently offering full-time bus
drivers $21.39 per hour. Substitute bus
drivers currently receive $19.32 per hour
with lump sum bonuses of $500, $750, and
$1,000 if they are on the job for 50 days,
100 days, and 150 days, respectively.
Those who have an interest in becoming
a substitute bus driver are encouraged to
reach out to the district through its website
at swcsd.us for job opportunities.
In other news from the Feb. 12 meeting,
the board approved a resolution authorizing
the district to seek bids for a contract to
replace the walk-in cooler and freezer at
Jackson Middle School. According to Debo,
the district will utilize funds from the food
services department to cover the cost of the
project. It is expected that the project will
cost at least $50,000.
The Columbus Metropolitan Library has hosted a variety of inperson
and virtual programs this month to celebrate and
honor African-Americans who have made an indelible impact
in their local communities, in this country, and around the
world. The CML – Hilltop Branch recently welcomed the Urban
Strings Columbus Youth Orchestra on Feb. 18 where the budding
musical talents inspired and entertained the crowd by
performing music from popular Black arrangers, artists and
composers. Shown here after their nearly hour-long performance
are (from left to right) Tia Ward, Naimah Mason, Enoa
The youth string ensemble will be holding another concert at
the Main Library, 96 S. Grant Ave., on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
A Step in the Right Direction, a nonprofit
organization in Columbus, is hosting
a five-year anniversary townhall celebration
and fundraiser. The celebration will
take place on Feb. 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
at Glenwood United Methodist Church,
2833 Valleyview Drive in Columbus.
Kayla Davis, executive director of A
Step in the Right Direction, founded the
organization in 2019 and has served more
than 4,600 people since its establishment.
The organization’s mission is to inspire,
grow, and strengthen underserved communities
in central Ohio.
The primary component of their work is
their hygiene program, which provides
hygiene and cleaning items to the community
free of charge through household dropoffs,
and mini hygiene stores at three
schools on the westside. The organization
hosts other partnership outreach events
regularly within the community.
A Step in the Right Direction has also
helped previously incarcerated individuals
re-enter society with resume workshops,
professional clothing giveaways, and a sixweek
re-entry program course.
Well-known for two large events each
year, the Summer Bash and the Back-to-
School Bash, these regular events have
given momentum, garnered awareness,
and furthered the mission of the organization
tremendously. Both events offer a
place for the people in the community to
come together to enjoy music, free food,
arts and crafts, and other activities. The
Back-to-School Bash provides each child
with a backpack full of school supplies.
This year A Step in the Right Direction
is pausing to celebrate all of these milestones
that have been successful since
founding five years ago. The organization
invites neighbors, community members,
politicians, and leaders to come together to
commemorate the achievements of the past
five years in serving the Columbus area.
Story of a Bill,
Part II
As I wrote in my last communication with you, in
January I introduced House Bill 364, a measure
to allow the noncommercial distribution of milkweed
seeds to promote monarch butterfly population
growth, in the Ohio House of
Representatives. The idea for the bill originated
with David Donofrio, Grove City resident and vice
president of the Ohio Prairie Association (OPA).
As is part of the legislative process, the measure
was referred to the House Agriculture Committee.
HB 364 had its first hearing in the Agriculture
Committee on February 6. As is customary, the
first hearing is reserved for sponsor testimony.
There my joint sponsor, Rep. Roy Klopfenstein, a
farmer by occupation from District 82 in northwestern
Ohio and vice chair of the committee,
and I summarized the bill, why it will be worthwhile,
and how we had brought together officials
from both the Department of Agriculture and the
OPA to work out language acceptable to both
parties. During questioning from the committee
members, we allayed their concerns that we
were not removing milkweed seeds from the
noxious weeds list, but that allowing limited noncommercial
distribution would have little or no
effect on farm crops in the state. Indeed, Rep.
Klopfenstein attested firsthand that he saw no ill
effects of milkweed seeds in his local area. We
had able technical assistance from John Blakeman,
a retired high school science teacher and a
past president and current board member of the
OPA. After addressing the thoughtful questions
of committee members, the bill’s first hearing
was completed.
The next step in the process will be a second
hearing for proponent testimony, which will take
place probably in April. The committee chair,
Rep. Rodney Creech, from District 40 in Preble
County in western Ohio, has the option to schedule
both proponent and opponent testimony on
the same day, if he believes there to be little or
no opposition to the bill. Because we have yet to
learn of any such sentiment, there is some
chance that the bill will require only two hearings.
Once both proponents and opponents (if
any) have been given the opportunity to testify,
the committee can take a vote on the measure.
If approved, the bill then will proceed to the entire
House for its consideration.
Stay tuned for continued updates on the
progress of HB364.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the
Ohio House of Representatives, which consists of
parts of West, Southwest, and South Columbus,
Grove City, Urbancrest, and portions of Franklin
and Jackson Townships. He reports regularly on his
activities in this position and his campaign has paid
New initiative aims to find root cause of emotional distress
PAGE 6 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - February 25, 2024
The Ohio State University and Ohio
will investigate the role of biological, psychological,
and social factors that underlie
this epidemic.
“Ohio must be the model in helping our
citizens overcome or adapt to mental
health challenges so that they improve
mental and physical health, complete an
education, attain a good-paying job, support
a family, and contribute to our communities,”
said DeWine. “We envision that
the SOAR Study will jump-start future
efforts to learn more about what Ohioans
can do to better manage adversity and
develop resilience.”
“This is a milestone research endeavor
and the investment demonstrates Ohio’s
strong commitment to mobilizing expertise
across the state to improve life for some of
our most vulnerable residents,” said Ohio
State President Walter Ted Carter Jr. “As
a public, land-grant university, Ohio State
will always have a duty to seek new ways
to better meet the mental health needs of
Ohioans. Innovative collaborations like
this between the university and the state
are among the reasons I chose to come to
lead a place like Ohio State.”
The Ohio Department of Mental Health
and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is
funding the statewide research project
with an initial $20 million grant. Like
other areas of the country, Ohio has seen a
rise in mental illness, suicide, and deaths
related to drug overdose over the past
decade, and the COVID pandemic exacerbated
these problems. This research investment
demonstrates Ohio’s commitment to
improving mental health.
SOAR will study Ohioans in their local
communities, using an integrated “bring
science to the people” approach. It will create
a statewide medical research and
development ecosystem to drive continued
advances in mental health and substance
use prevention science and treatment
interventions.
“The causes of these diseases remain
largely a mystery to clinical experts and
the public,” said LeeAnne Cornyn, director
of OhioMHAS. “The SOAR Study has the
potential to help future generations better
understand risk factors, effective mitigation
strategies, and techniques to build
resiliency – in short, the study has the
potential to curb disease and save lives.”
The SOAR Study has two parallel but
connected projects:
•Focusing on breadth, the SOAR
Wellness Discovery Survey will engage as
many as 15,000 people across all 88 Ohio
counties. Researchers want to uncover how
strengths and skills may be related to overcoming
adversity. Those strengths will
inform researchers about which factors to
focus on to develop new treatments. This
portion is underway with more than
300,000 postcards mailed out to residents
statewide.
•Focusing on depth, the SOAR Brain
Health Study will comprehensively study
as many as 3,600 Ohioans in family groups
to examine the biological, psychological,
and social factors that help explain that
relationship, such as who does well with
adversity, who does not, and why. Those
discoveries will help researchers develop
personalized treatments.
“This important SOAR Study builds on
our long-standing academic health mission,
and we are proud to champion this
vital research to help all Ohioans,” said
John J. Warner, MD, chief executive officer
at The Ohio State University Wexner
Medical Center and executive vice president
at Ohio State.
The SOAR Study will engage a multidisciplinary
team of experts from Bowling
Green State University, Central State
University, Kent State University,
Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Northeast
Ohio Medical University, Case
Western/University Hospital-Cleveland,
Ohio University, University of
Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital,
University of Toledo and Wright State
University.
“SOAR is our effort to do for addiction,
mental illness and mental health, what the
Framingham Heart Study researchers did
for heart disease and heart health,” said
SOAR Study principal investigator K.
Luan Phan, MD, professor and chair of the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Health at Ohio State.
Launched in 1948, the heart study has
enrolled more than 15,000 study participants
over 75 years, resulting in major lifesaving
advancements about heart disease
risk factors.
“Our approach with the SOAR Study
will allow us to identify the factors that can
be modified to reduce risk and build
resilience,” said Phan. “We won’t be able to
bend the curve on the growing number of
deaths of despair such as those from addiction
and suicide until we go upstream to
better understand their etiology. SOAR is
the first-in the nation statewide, multigenerational
comprehensive study that will
offer a new roadmap for developing better
treatments and cures that will improve and
save lives.”
Ever since Netflix announced that more
romantic comedies would be coming to its
platform back in 2018, the streaming company
has churned out more than a dozen
original movies and acquired roughly the
same amount from traditional movie studios
who were unwilling to take a risk by
giving their romantic comedy the theatrical
treatment.
For the most part, the romantic comedies
on the stream have made little impact
on the general public or the subscriber
base. The few that have managed to
become instant favorites — “Always Be My
Maybe,” “The Kissing Booth,” “To All the
Boys I’ve Loved Before,” and “Set It Up” —
have accomplished that feat due to the
charm of its stars, without which a romantic
comedy has little hope of success.
“Players,” the latest original feature in
this genre to be released on the streaming
platform, leans heavily on the charisma of
its primary cast, led by Gina Rodriguez and
Damon Wayans Jr. With their megawatt
smiles, puppy dog eyes, and sunny presence,
the duo manages to take this somewhat
middling movie that feels as if it
belongs in the bin of the early 2000s and
transforms it into something watchable, if
not downright almost enjoyable. While I do
not believe it will be considered an instant
classic, it does have some appeal because of
the two leads who look as if they are having
a great time with the material and each
other.
In the film, Rodriguez plays Mack, a
local sports reporter who has spent the last
decade with a serious affliction — a strong
aversion to committed relationships. To
celebrate her stance on the single life, she
regularly gathers at sports dives with her
small group of guy
friends — Adam
(Wayans Jr.);
B r a n n a g a n
(Augustus Prew);
and Little (Joel
Courtney) — and
comes up with elaborate
schemes to get
strangers into the
sack and out of the
apartment a few
hours later.
On the surface, it
appears that all is
going well for Mack
but sad music cues
as she looks at
lovey-dovey couples
and the wistful
glances she shares
with Adam hints to
the audience that
things are not
always what they
seem.
While at the
office of the newspaper
one morning, she meets Nick Russel
(Tom Ellis), an acclaimed war correspondent
who is in town to pick up some awards
and do research for an upcoming book.
Taken by his beauty, his accent, and his
reputation as a “serious journalist,” she
immediately wants to run a scheme to get
him interested enough in her so they can
share a night together. Naturally, when
she is at his swanky apartment that is
adorned with pictures of his parents, honorifics,
and dishes that match, she is
instantly smitten and wants more than
just one night together.
“I want a drawer to put stuff in at his
place,” she tells her friends who are utterly
perplexed and a bit repulsed by her desire
for a genuine relationship. But because
they love her and want her to be happy,
they help her come up with a scheme called
“The Moneyball” to snag the man of her
dreams. This involves a bit of light stalking
to collect data on his likes and dislikes; his
morning, afternoon, and evening routine;
and the kind of women he is attracted to.
Although the scheme may come across
as a 10 on the creep scale, it is set up by
screenwriter Whit Anderson and director
Trish Sie like a zippy heist film. It’s a sharp
and winking at the audience stylistic choice
and it infuses the story with a bit of
intrigue as the film works its way through
to the most reliable trope of the romantic
comedy: That the real Mr. Right was in
front of our clueless heroine all along.
Although there are some miscues in the
movie — the dialogue is a real issue as it
often comes across as a bit flat and outdated
at times — “Players” has a watchable
quality to it, due in large part to the affable
nature of the characters and how they are
portrayed by the equally affable leads and
secondary characters. You get the sense
that the actors are having fun with their
roles and with the challenge of making
their characters not come across as sleazy
as they could have been. I imagine the cast
spent a few weeks of pre-filming together
bonding over how to make their characters
likeable and endearing to the audience,
coming up with the
“loveable rogue”
angles that have
worked in all genres
of films throughout
time. Overall, their
preparation was a
success and their
on-screen fake
friendship and offscreen
chemistry
worked to make this
a romantic comedy
Department of Development announces grant funding to help homeless
The Ohio Department of Development
recently announced $15.7 million in grants
to help Ohioans facing housing instability
and homelessness find temporary, emergency
shelter and permanent housing.
“Ensuring all Ohioans have the opportunity
to live up to their full potential starts
with access to safe and stable housing,”
said Lydia Mihalik, director of the
Department of Development. “With this
investment we’re making a meaningful
impact on the lives of Ohioans facing housing
challenges and empowering local
organizations to expand their reach and
effectiveness in addressing the immediate
and longer-term needs of housing in their
communities.”
Ohio Housing Trust Fund (OHTF) dollars
are being awarded through the
Homeless Crisis Response program to
assist 40 nonprofit and local government
agencies across the state with homelessness
prevention, rapid re-housing, and
emergency shelter services. The funds will
assist 31 agencies operating 37 emergency
shelters and support 12 housing stability
programs to benefit an estimated 39,000
Ohioans.
The Community Shelter Board in
Franklin County will receive a $1 million
grant to contract with Lutheran Social
Services, Maryhaven, Southeast, YMCA of
Central Ohio, and YWCA Columbus to provide
emergency shelter for homeless individuals.
Supportive services provided
include case management, referrals to community
service providers, and placement in
permanent housing. The program expects
to serve 10,500 people during the two-year
grant period. Community Shelter Board
projects 30 percent of people will find permanent
housing after an average stay of 54
days.
Each of Ohio’s 88 counties is located
within one of 25 homeless planning regions
throughout the state. Grants are awarded
yearly, with approximately half of the
regions receiving funding every other year
for a two-year period.
