What’s your ‘spirit animal’ when it comes to prayer?

Have you ever thought about your prayer 

life? Do you struggle and wonder if you’re 

getting it right? Do you sometimes just find 

yourself “too busy” to pray? 

I once read a book called “Too Busy NOT 

to Pray” by Bill Hybels that made me really 

stop and think about what I was doing in my 

prayer life. 

As I pondered my own prayer habits, as 

well as those of my congregation, I found myself 

thinking about how many Native American 

cultures believe that each person has a 

spirit animal that helps guide them, in a way, 

defining who they are. 

If you had a spirit animal representing your 

prayer life, what would it be? 

I believe the buzzard would fit very well as a 

representation of some people’s prayer lives.

If you put a buzzard in a 6-foot by 8-foot 

pen that’s entirely open at the top, the buzzard 

will be unable to fly. You see, buzzards 

begin their flight with a running start of 10 

to 12 feet. Without that amount of space, a 

buzzard is a prisoner, even with an open top. 

Well, that’s how some people start their 

prayers. They need that “running start” 

— some event or thought that spurs their 

minds to action — or they find themselves 

lost on how to say a prayer. 

Then, there’s the bat. A bat can’t just take 

off flying from a level place, such as the floor; 

it basically has to throw itself into the air from 

a branch, a cliff or some other precipice. 

Here again is an example of some folks 

that need someone to start a prayer in order 

for them to “get in the mood” to pray. Once 

they get that “lift,” they can take off like a bat 

and pray for hours — but they needed that 

lift in order to do so. 

Next, I thought of the bumblebee. If you 

put this creature in a tumbler or jar, it will 

see no means of escape, even without a 

lid. The bumblebee will continuously pace 

around the bottom of that tumbler, seeking a

way out from the bottom rather than looking 

above for a clear route of escape. This is a 

sure path to self-destruction for the bee, unless 

someone upends the tumbler, allowing 

it to escape. 

Many people are so overwhelmed that 

they simply can’t figure out how to pray — 

what words to use, or even what to ask for — 

and so they just keep going in circles, never 

really praying, until they give up. 

I believe all of us experience times in our 

prayer life when we can identify with the 

buzzard, the bat or the bumblebee. We struggle 

and thrash about with all our problems 

and frustrations, never realizing that all we 

have to do is look up to heaven for help. 

That’s the answer — the escape route and 

the solution to any problem: Just look up. 

Instead of wallowing on the floor like the 

bat, or trying to outrun your problems like 

the buzzard, or ignoring the obvious solution 

like the bumblebee, we need to look up. God 

is there; he always was, and he always will be. 

All you need to do is talk to God, not with 

fancy phrases or great theological meaning. 

Just talk to him as you would a friend or a

worded. True prayer is our raw, honest 

thoughts and emotions. God can handle 

it. He loves us in spite of our flaws, and he 

wants us to talk to him. He’s not worried 

about the specific words we use; he wants to 

know our joys, our pains, our frustrations. 

God is looking down at us as we struggle, 

wondering why we don’t simply look up and 

talk to him. God’s “phone line” is open 24/7. 

Use your own words in prayer, just as you 

would when talking to a friend. 

If you’ve never prayed before and don’t 

know how to start, just tell him so and let 

God guide you. Tell him exactly what you’re 

struggling with, using your own words and 

thoughts. Just be yourself. 

After a while you’ll find that prayer is important 

to both you and God. Are you too 

busy to pray? If so, how can you expect God 

to answer your prayers when you don’t take 

even a few minutes to talk to him? 

God is looking down at you. Are you looking
