groom. Most often 

at a wedding, it is 

the bride that is 

noted and 

celebrated, and we think we need to be 

fair by the groom. So this time, the Bride 

and Groom Magazine, has a couple of 

things especially for the groom – a 

checklist for the groom and a note on 

the Sherwani. 

Marriage is also about family. Having 

your own kids is a joy that cannot be 

easily described. When planning to 

have a baby, there are a few things a 

woman should know of about her own 

health and we have the simple basics 

for you. Family planning helps in 

married life; and then there are times 

unfortunately, when conceiving a baby 

may be difficult, but fear not, there are 

those who can advice and help you, so 

do turn the pages and find out who. 

The Bride and Groom Wedding Fair 

2010, held at the BMICH in July, saw 

many a bride-to-be, future grooms, 

their families and friends meeting with 

several leading industry personnel. 

Collecting many a leaflet, names and 

addresses, they gathered ideas and 

valuable information that would help 

them in planning their weddings. 

Bride and Groom would like to thank 

the exhibitors and everyone who 

participated in and helped organize 

the event, and making it a successful 

event. 

We are expanding our team! We are 

on the lookout for talented individuals

Simple Pre-Pregnancy Checklist 

Wanting to have a baby? 

There are a few things that 

you should know about 

when are you are planning 

for your baby. Please use 

the following as a rough 

guideline. You need to get 

Doctor’s advice before and 

during the pregnancy. 

Visit the doctor for 

a health check. 

Tell the doctor (general practitioner, 

GP) of your interest in conceiving. Tell 

him of any medical conditions and 

allergies you have, previous surgeries 

and visits to hospitals etc. Get advice 

on any conditions that are common in 

your family history (genetic conditions) 

like Thalassimia. Also check if 

you’ve already got the following 

vaccinations at the end of this 

article, if not get GP advice. 

Take Folic Acid 

You need to start taking Folic Acid 

(Folate) while you are planning to 

get pregnant (during 

pre-conception). This is to lower the 

probability of the baby having 

neural tube defects (e.g. Spina 

Bifida). You would need to 

consult a doctor in taking Folic 

Acid. You can also have the following 

vegetables which contain Folic acid: 

Spinach, Avocado, Beef, Eggs, Chick 

Peas, Soy Beans and Oranges. 

Have Good Food 

Start eating healthily. Have good 

meals for the three main meals, daily. 

Take vitamin supplements following 

the doctor’s recommendations (as 

mentioned previously). Do note 

that vitamins should be used as

supplements to your normal 

food intake. Do not rely on 

the vitamin tablets for your daily 

vitamin needs. Do not take excess 

amounts of Vitamin A, than 

prescribed as it may be harmful for 

baby (birth defects). Eat what you 

prefer but eat healthily. 

Don’t Smoke. 

Don’t Consume 

Alcohol. 

Don’t smoke or consume alcohol while 

you are looking to get pregnant and 

during pregnancy and breast 

feeding. 

Limit Caffeine 

Intake 

We are used to having tea and 

coffee (which contain Caffeine) in 

our daily lives to refresh ourselves. 

But if you are planning on getting 

pregnant, you would have to 

limit intake of coffee and tea. 

You also need to control 

consumption of energy drinks 

and chocolate. 

Avoid and 

Manage Stress. 

You may not believe it, but stress does 

contribute to your chance of getting 

pregnant. Try to lead a relaxed 

lifestyle, avoid stressful situations 

and get 8 hours of sleep every night. 

Rubella Vaccine OR Measles, Mumps & Rubella – MMR Vaccine 

(this needs to be taken BEFORE pregnancy, AND you should 

avoid getting pregnant within three months of being administered 

the Rubella or MMR vaccination) 

Chicken Pox Vaccine (if you have not had Chicken Pox as a 

child, you may take this, though not compulsory. This needs to 

be taken few months BEFORE pregnancy).

Quick Checklist for 

the Groom 

In preparing for the wedding the 

groom does play a huge part. Bride 

and Groom would like to give you 

some advice and tips in preparing 

for your wedding. First and 

foremost you should understand that 

planning a wedding can be stressful 

on the bride and therefore, be 

patient and help her along the way. 

If you have any issues with the plans, 

talk it over with your fiancée, calmly. 

This may be the first event that both 

the bride’s and groom’s families are 

organizing together, so there might 

be differences in 

opinions/expectations. Try to strike 

a balance between different 

ideas/requirements; it can be a 

great relationship building practice 

with the in-laws-to-be if it is handled 

diplomatically! 

Work out and be in good shape, 

make a plan to do exercises as you 

count down months to the wedding – 

you would look smart and handsome 

on the wedding day. Organize your 

wedding attendants’ (best man / 

men, paige boy) attire, early. You 

may get the jitters on the wedding 

day, its normal to feel so. Remember 

to smile with your bride 

throughout the wedding ceremony. 

It is best that you do not consume 

alcohol on your wedding day or the 

day before.

Organize, write and send out invites 

to those on the wedding/home

Organize transport to and from the 

wedding venue 

If you plan to have a bachelor 

party, hold it at least a week before 

the wedding avoid doing anything 

about which you would regret later 

Assign work duties to a colleague 

for the wedding day and while you 

are away on honeymoon 

Check that the best man has the 

rings on the wedding day 

Avoid taking work-related calls 

during wedding and switch off 

mobile when on honeymoon!

Making a Wedding Speech - 

Confidently 

To some, giving a speech at a wedding 

may seem daunting. And when 

you’re the father-of-the-bride, best 

man, sister-of-the-bride or have 

been requested by the couple to say 

a few words, you can’t say escape 

from giving the toast or a speech. 

Consider it a privilege to be able to 

say a few words at the wedding, for 

someone who considers you special. 

Don’t shy away. Some have the 

natural ability to say a few meaningful 

and not so meaningful words, 

which they think of, on the spot. 

Some do well in preparing a speech 

before hand, while some end up 

being nervous while making the 

toast. 

Looking for advice for those who are 

afraid of public speaking, Bride and 

Groom asked Anoja Mawella of 

Copywriting Direct, for a few pointers 

in giving a speech. She said it all 

has to do with ‘Prepare, relax, 

project and smile’. 

Write down what you have to say 

in a piece of paper –in point form, 

or the entire speech. 

Rehearse it at least the day 

before, to yourself, out loud. 

If you have time, request a family 

member or friend to go through 

the speech for you, and to listen to 

you 

On the wedding day, make a 

mental note of the main points of 

what you need to day before the 

guests arrive, check out the size of 

the venue. 

Check how much you need to 

project your voice (with or without 

microphone) 

When starting the speech, stand 

with your feet in line with your 

shoulders, and relax. 

Smile with the couple, and then the 

audience before giving the speech. 

Don’t keep looking at the piece of 

paper as you read. Look at the 

back of the audience, the couple, 

scan across the guests. You don’t 

need to make direct eye contact 

with the guests if you are nervous. 

Never mention anything that would 

make the wedded couple look 

bad. 

Don’t make jokes about any 

member of the couple’s family; 

don’t mention any exes. 

If you do have to make a small 

funny joke, don’t stress on the joke. 

Say it, pause and move on to the 

next line. If no one laughs, it’s fine. 

Just move on. 

Keep the speech short. Remember 

to toast the couple before you end 

the speech inviting the guests to do 

the same: raise the glass confidently, 

smile, look at the couple 

and wish them well. 

So ….to make a confident wedding speech - Prepare, Relax, Project and Smile.
