when we get to the month
of March.
There’s talk of tournaments, seeds, rankings
and records. It’s
in the sports section,
on the television commercials,
even on major
network morning.
For me, I was simply
looking into Iowa
high school basketball.
My youngest
nephew is part of the
boys basketball team
in Treynor, and they
earned a trip to Des
Moines this week.
Their first-round game

was played Monday evening, but my husband
and I were not able to attend.
I found myself searching the internet for a
score after the game, but none of the major
news sites were updated. The pairings and
game times for the entire tournament were
there but no scores.
Eventually, I stumbled across something
on X from a Treynor parent saying, “Returning
to Des Moines on Thursday.” At the
same time, I found a short news article on
an Iowa sports website that declared victory
for West Burlington, even listing a winning
score with a 14-point spread.
I was confused.
Then I started reading the story and realized
it had to have been written by artificial
intelligence. There were no names in the
story, no scoring leaders, no quotes from
coaches — just fluffy verbiage like “knocking
down three-pointers,” “fought hard
throughout the game” and “shot a lower
percentage than their opponents from the
field.”
It took several hours for me to get the
actual score — Treynor 73, West Burlington
63 — from a credible news source.
Moral of the story? Frenzy of the season
or not, make sure your information is from
a trusted source.

As spring nears, the town of Emmetsburg
readies for a major celebration.
St. Patrick’s Day signals five days of
activities in the Palo Alto County community
with plenty of in store fun for residents and
visitors of all ages.
This year the fun starts with the Jr. Miss and
Miss Shamrock Pageants on Sunday, March 10,
followed by a few more days to prepare for the
festivities to get into full swing.
Activities are slated for March 14-17 with the
bulk of the schedule held Saturday, March 16,
starting bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with the
O’Round the Loch Scholarship Run.
David Van Oosbree, a board member of the
St. Patrick’s Association of Emmetsburg and
the parade chairman, said his daughter comes
back to town from Des Moines every year to
participate in the run.
He notes that many former residents tend
to mark the dates on the calendar for their annual
return visit to Emmetsburg and a special
event has grown around that.
“For probably 15 years we’ve had the Social
Gathering of the Clans,” Van Oosbree said.
“Basically it’s where a lot of the locals that
have moved away come to the fire station — if
you want to see someone you haven’t seen in
awhile that’s the place to go.”
The Social Gathering occurs immediately
after the Famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
It’s not a town celebration without a parade
and Emmetsburg is certainly no exception.
“You now, it’s kind of a tough time of year
since you don’t really know what the weather’s
gong to be — six out of 10 times it’s fairly decent,”
Van Oosbree said. “When it started in
1960 it was a bunch of Irish families who decided
to march down the street on St. Patrick’s
Day and it just ballooned after that. In 1962 we
became the sister city of Dublin and the celebrations
just got bigger and better. Dolly Parton
when she was just starting her career, I think she
was 23 when she came here and performed.”
Celebrities are harder to book these days,
but they continue to sister city bond through
hosting an Irish dignitary each year.
This time around it will be Irish parliament
member Cormac Devlin.
“They’ll usually spend from Wednesday
through Sunday with us and go to the schools
to talk about Ireland, things like that,” Van
Oosbree said.
In the meantime there will be plenty to do
throughout the weekend.

Pat’s Kids Zone with a variety of kid-friendly
activities under the heated tent. Craft beer tasting
and a chain saw artist.
A Rotary Pancake Breakfast rounds things
out on Sunday morning.
If you’re returning to town after some time
away, a longtime resident, or visiting for the
first time, there is something fun for all to enjoy.
“It’s just really nice. It’s spring and people
want to get out and it’s always been marked
on a lot of people’s calendars to come back
and see their friends and family,” Van Oosbree
said. “There’s a lot of camaraderie and
the town is just alive. Like I said, six times out
of 10 we have decent weather and when that
happens it just balloons and we have people
everywhere. It’s a really fun time.” F

Performing Arts Center is ready to

with an upcoming performance of
the ABBAsolutely Fab: Tribute to the
Music of ABBA show at 7 p.m. Saturday,
March 16.
The group features musicians who
hail from the Twin Cities and Britain.
“Led by powerhouse vocalists
Jenny Russ and Katy Vernon, ABBAsolutely
Fab will have you dancing
and singing along to hits like ‘Dancing
Queen,’ ‘SOS,’ ‘Mamma Mia,’
‘Take A Chance On Me,’ ‘Waterloo’
and many more,” according to the
band’s bio.
This group hasn’t performed yet
in Worthington, but the executive
director of the Memorial Auditorium
Performing Arts Center Tammy
Makram can’t wait for them to bring
down the house.
“Everybody loves a little ABBA. I
was looking for a fun show to do
on St. Patrick’s Day weekend and
I heard about this group that was
selling out show after show at one of
the smaller theaters at the Chanhassen
Dinner Theater,” Makram said.
“When I saw this group, I knew that
they would be perfect and really fun.
I’m excited to be bringing something
new that we’ve never done before.”
This group doesn’t necessarily pretend
that they are ABBA themselves,
but Makram insists that you will
feel like you’ve been to see ABBA in
concert.
“They do ABBA’s music note for
note and they are very good at performing
the music and their show
will closely resemble being at an
actual ABBA concert,” Makram said.
“There are a lot of ABBA tribute bands
out there, but this one is a highly
ranked group that does their music
really well.”
This is a show for everyone, as
Makram says, the love for ABBA is
universal.
“It really doesn’t matter what age
your are — high schoolers to seniors
— everyone loves ABBA. High schoolers
have developed this love for the
music of ABBA that’s been passed
down from their parents or their
grandparents,” Makram said.
A love of ABBA is sure to bring
people to the event, but it’s also a
love of ABBA that will bring concertgoers
to their feet.
“I am looking forward to everyone
standing up and dancing around
while we are singing along. You can’t
not get up on your feet and dance
when listening to ‘Dancing Queen,’”
Makram said.
So grab your tickets because it’s
time to watch that scene and dig the

For the next edition of Luncheon
with Instruction set for noon and
6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji,
Bicknese will be showing just what
a splash or two, or more, of alcohol
can do to elevate a dish.

The Dickinson County Nature Center is
planning a bear-y good time.
The focus of their next Nature Tots
program will be Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear.
The Nature Tots program is aimed at children
ages 2-5 with an adult chaperone and
takes place the second Wednesday each
month at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The event is free. Registration is encouraged
and can be done online at www.dickinsoncountyconservationboard.com.
The next class will take place on Wednesday,
March 13 and they are excited to bring
the fun.
“It will be a bear-y good program! We
are exploring the various species of bears
found around the world,” said naturalist
Brittney Snell. “The program will highlight
what makes bears special and include
hands-on activities.”
In addition to learning some cool things
about bears, the kids will also get to learn
what real bears feel like.
“The kids will get to touch a real bear
pelt,” Snell said. “We will also use our own
bodies to try to walk like bears do while

just a fun activity, it’s also something that
helps the toddlers in their physical development.

speech, and social development,” Snell
said. “Each participant experiences a safe
program to engage in nature and hopefully
grow excitement toward the outdoor
world.”
The staff at the Nature Center are committed
to getting kids in nature, exploring

“Nature Tots provides a foundational opportunity
for kids to develop a love for the
natural world. By creating programs that
engage participants and build relationships,
we can encourage the next generation to be
curious about our world and to be kind to
animals,” Snell said.
In addition to helping kids develop a
lifelong love and appreciation for the natural
world, Nature Tots also helps kids and
adults spend some quality time together.
“Our Nature Tots program includes an
adult and child combination. The duo will
gain opportunities for future conversations,
build amazing memories, and try new
skills together,” Snell said. F
