THE

AMERICA: STILL NUMBER ONE

Batten down the hatches. Foreign nationals are

headed for our shores and they’re out to relieve

you of your assets. I’m not talking about foreign

aid or anything unsavory. They’re coming to sell

you yachts, and they’re bringing their “A” game.

For all the talk in the yachting industry in

recent years about the appeal and untapped buying

power of the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia,

India, China and South Africa) with their tsunami

of freshly minted billionaires, North America

remains the single largest yacht market in the

world. That’s not news, of course, but builders

around the globe appear to have rediscovered the

western market and are going to unprecedented

lengths to attract our dollars.

During the fall Monaco and Fort Lauderdale

shows, builders from Europe, Asia and the antipodes

touted renderings of new models and concepts

specifically tailored to the American market.

The boats they’re creating are, for the most part,

impressive products, and indeed reflect much of

what they know to be true about us. We get the

yachting lifestyle here—the sun, the wind, the

water, the adventure, the value of escape. Many

of their designs feature beach clubs, balconies

and abundant outside space for acquiring skin

damage. Further to our benefit and to that of our

homegrown equipment suppliers, they are giving

special attention to electrical and mechanical

systems that are easy for us to use and service. It’s

not that they’ve given up on the BRICS types,

but they recognize that we have cash, we have the

pent-up demand and we love our boats.

“They see you as a pond of hungry fish,” one

yacht broker commented at the Fort Lauderdale

International Boat Show.

For a variety of reasons, the BRICS countries

have proved difficult markets to crack. Take

China. With all its explosive wealth, boating as

recreation has not yet taken hold. The country

is just now developing some meaningful marina

infrastructure, import taxes are gruesome and

apparently many Chinese prefer to stay at the

dock and sing karaoke—something you don’t

exactly need a boat for. The Chinese have yachtgrade

disposable income, but their spending priorities

still lie in cars and other luxury goods. I

heard a story at the Monaco Yacht Show about a

Chinese man who called a designer looking for a

baby bed. The designer was happy to create one

for him, but the guy ended up calling Ferrari in

Italy and having them fabricate one from one

of their blaze-red car bodies. (When you think

about it, that’s really a great mindset for owning

a yacht, right?)

For the most part, the yachts and designs these

overseas builders are making for us are pretty

cool. What I wonder, though, is where our native

yachtbuilders fit into this equation. Many have

been struggling, especially since 2008, and many

of our countrymen already have taken advantage

of what the overseas builders have to offer. I’m a

believer in the power of the market and may the

best products with the best value win, but what

the heck is wrong with us that we continue to pass

over our homegrown products that have always

offered superb quality and reasonable value?

If you’ve never been, the Monaco Yacht Show is

an unbelievable affair that brings together several

hundred of the finest new and brokerage boats

from yards around the world. Typically, there is

heavy skew toward yachts built in Europe. As I

moved about the docks at the September show,

however, I was stopped in my tracks—not by an

Italian, Dutch or German build, of which there

were many stunning examples, but by a boat built

by Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

I toured the 213-foot Lady M with her Italian

designer, who was quick to point out elements

of her construction, finish and furniture, most

of which was the handiwork of highly skilled

American craftsmen. I was blown away. Lady M

is a sport yacht, which is not really my thing, but

I left Monaco with her solidly at the top of my

list of favorites. In this issue, Editor-at-Large Jill

Bobrow offers some in-depth insights into her

design and execution.

Reports from American builders such as

Christensen and Westport suggest the American

yachtbuilding industry is starting to regain the

attention it deserves. Christensen has a strong

order book it says contains a preponderance of

American clients. Westport says its current owners

are more engaged in moving to new boats

than they have been in quite a while. Other yards

are showing renewed strength. Viking sold a

dozen boats at the Fort Lauderdale show. That’s

all great news.

The foreigners at our doorstep have much to

offer and they deserve your attention, but nobody

really knows better what we want than our own.

Here’s hoping you give our native yachtbuilding

industry a good hard look, too, as you liberate

some of that pent-up demand.

Blohm + Voss Project Graceful

The latest launch from Blohm + Voss, which carries the project name Graceful, was set to undergo sea trials and be delivered to her owner at the end

of December. Over the past 18 months, the 269-foot (82-meter) vessel, designed by H2 Yacht Design, was fitted out by Blohm + Voss in cooperation

with the owner and Dörries Maritime Services. Among her unique and complex equipment and design characteristics is a 49-by-10-foot indoor pool,

which can be converted to a dance floor. In addition to a separate owner’s area with a duplex suite and direct access to the sea via a folding balcony,

the yacht has two VIPs and three guest suites for a further 10 guests, as well as 24 crew.

New 82 From Southern Wind

South African shipyard Southern Wind is preparing to deliver Grand

Orazio, hull number two of its SW82 line. This delivery is quick on the

heels of Feelin’ Good, hull number one of the series. Grand Orazio is a flushdeck

design with a focus on performance at the request of her owner. She

features racing-orientated rigging and deck solutions including a Southern

Spars carbon-fiber mast and boom, EC6 carbon rigging, a carbon foil

for the furler, racing winches and a removable bowsprit. The interior is

designed to accommodate either a comfortable family cruise or a race

crew. When used by the owner’s family, guests will stay in one of five suites

including the forward master suite with a private studio. One or two of

these cabins can be used for crew when necessary.

Princess Fills Out Its M-Class

The British builder’s M-Class range is growing. The latest addition to the family of superyachts is the Princess 35M, and she will join the fleet in 2014.

Positioned between the existing 32M and 40M models, the 35M is a semi-custom design that will be capable of high-speed cruising or more efficient,

long-range voyages. Princess designed many of the spaces on board for multiple functions, such as the aft cockpit, which can be used as a lounge or

a more formal dining space. The beach club includes a hydraulic swim platform to assist in launching and recovering a tender up to 18 feet 6 inches

(5.65 meters) with what the yard calls a “winch and runway” system.

Your Way From Royal Huisman

It isn’t a choice many yards offer, but Royal Huisman has taken its latest concept one step further,

offering a similar design in either power or sail. The 262-foot (80-meter) Dart concept was designed

around the idea of a floating boutique shoreside hotel. Large windows and an emphasis on the outdoor

spaces—like the beach deck and pool area—make the most of life on board. Both concepts utilize

what the yard calls a “total energy” approach, meant to limit energy consumption and reduce noise by

optimizing weight, as well as employing microturbines and alternative-energy generation, storage and

management systems. Above the waterline, the yachts are very similar in style thanks to lines by Andrew

Winch and Royal Huisman. The concepts’ interior layouts are spacious and well-appointed, but they can,

of course, be changed at the owner’s discretion.

Superyacht Trimaran Concept

From Sunreef

The in-house design team at Sunreef Yachts has created a

concept for a 210-foot (64-meter) power trimaran. Sunreef

prepared the project at the request of a potential client

who was looking for an extraordinary multihull. The design

offers a remarkable amount of living space equaling 10,225

square feet. With a crew of 18, the yacht will comfortably

accommodate up to 14 guests. The top deck comprises a

1,345-square-foot dining area for 14, the captain’s cabin,

an internal helm station and a dayhead. There is a private

terrace aft. All decks are connected by an elevator.

The 2,368-square-foot salon can be arranged in a number

of different ways. The master suite is forward and has a private

outside terrace, two separate walk-in wardrobes, hisand-hers

toilets, two study areas and panoramic views. The

design features six spacious guest cabins with queen beds

located in front of drop-down private balconies. The forepeak

houses a 12-person main tender and a crew dinghy.

Horizon Delivers First RP110

Horizon Group has launched Andrea VI, hull number one of the company’s 110-

foot (34-meter) RP110 raised-pilothouse model. Delivered to her second-time

U.S. Horizon owner in October, she will make her public debut at the 2014 Palm

Beach International Boat Show in March. The RP110’s exterior styling, designed

by J.C. Espinosa, focuses on providing unobstructed views with large, sweeping

windows that combine with fluid style lines to create a sleek and modern profile—a

trait of the Horizon RP series. Donald Blount and Associates worked with

Horizon’s design team for two years on the double-chine hull design, which was

adopted to accomplish two aims: low resistance at low speed and high dynamic

stability at high speed. Propellers housed in tunnels provide balance between

the RP110’s trim and shallow 6-foot draft. Powered by twin 1,800-horsepower

Caterpillar C32A engines, Andrea VI cruises at 18 knots and has a top speed of

22 knots, Horizon says. She is equipped with the Octoplex yacht monitoring system,

bow and stern thrusters, digital stabilizers, a 1,400-gallon-per-day watermaker

and a Hamann sanitary treatment system. The yacht’s main deck incorporates an

expansive salon with wet bar, formal dining for 10, a large galley and pantry, and

a country kitchen forward. Her four guest staterooms are below and include a

full-beam master, port and starboard queen guest suites and a VIP cabin in the

bow. Her owners planned to cruise the Caribbean with family and friends for the

remainder of the winter season.

CQS Spearheads

Superyacht Conversion

The 348-foot (106-meter) Poseidonos, which is

undergoing a major conversion and refit in Greece,

will have a new interior from top to bottom. Milan

design firm Ciarmoli Queda Studio (CQS), which is

handling the majority of the subcontracting, is creating

a clean, retro-modern look. CQS directors Simone

Ciarmoli and Miguel Queda were on hand at the

Hôtel de Paris in Monaco in September with models

and design boards to give a sneak preview of what

the yacht will look like when she is launched. A mindboggling

array of materials is being implemented

including exotic woods, leather, eel, onyx, lacquer and

murano crystal. Lush Loro Piana fabrics and carpets

are being used throughout. Rectangular framings outlined

by brushed-metal inserts are a recurring design

motif. CQS has its work cut out for it, as there is a

tremendous amount of interior space to cover: six

decks housing 23 guest cabins, multiple salons and

three dining rooms including a teppanyaki grill, a theater,

a business center, a gym, a spa and a swimming

pool area. The yacht is scheduled for launch in 2014.

Exploration Catamaran From Pachoud Yachts

New Zealand’s Pachoud Yachts is due to launch a 79-foot (24-meter) exploration

catamaran with an interior by Sylvia Bolton. The innovative vessel is loaded with

features aimed at achieving a high level of autonomy with a range in excess of

2,500 nautical miles. The helicopter deck has a sliding pad for maximum clearance

during takeoff and landing. Obstructions such as the radar arch slide forward.

The deck also houses a 500-gallon refueling facility. While the vessel is suited to

a range of smaller helicopters, she will be launched with a Hughes MD 500. The

yacht also sports a custom landing-craft tender that will transport two Honda

230 motorbikes, which are handled with a dedicated crane system discreetly built

into the aft-deck overhead. Her interior will be light and contemporary. The cabinetry

will be finished in cerused, horizontally laid oak and a combination of gloss

and satin paint finishes. Three-dimensional molded accent panels and glass-bead

surfaces will border the main areas. A large fireplace located between the salon,

galley and den will throw off a nice glow and provide heat as desired. Among

the many original features of the interior is a large, glass hatch in the floor of the

master stateroom with a view directly below into a lit, underwater area. The yacht

can accommodate six more guests in three additional suites. She carries a crew

of two. Power will be two MAN R6 800s. Naval architecture and exterior design

Mangusta’s Latest Project

During the Monaco Yacht Show, Overmarine unveiled an addition to its Mangusta Oceano displacement line. The Alberto Mancini-designed 137-foot

(42.3-meter) steel-and-aluminum vessel includes fold-down balconies and three decks. One of the most eye-catching features of the design, though, is

the bow area where two spacious sunpads sit just abaft a swimming pool with a continuous waterfall. The glazed-glass bottom of the pool brings extra

light into the bathroom of the owner’s suite without sacrificing privacy. Another sure-to-be-popular lounging space is the stern beach club created

when the hatch opens over the water. Glass panels in the hatch allow guests to peer into the water below. In fact, light and glass play an important

part in the design all over the yacht, including LED lights below the surface and glass tables used throughout. Powered by twin MTU 12V 2000 M72

engines, the Mangusta Oceano 42 cruises at 11 knots, which gives it a range of more than 4,000 miles.

Moonen’s New 24-Meter Custom Series

Moonen Shipyards has signed a letter of intent to build the first

hull in a new custom line of 24-meter (79-foot) motoryachts created

in partnership with designer Nick Mezas. The series is the yard’s

response to clients seeking a Moonen in smaller lengths than the leading

Dutch yard normally builds. Moonen recently launched its largest

yacht to date, the fully custom 42-meter (138-foot) Sofia. She was

on display at the 2013 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The

new series is available in three sizes of 18, 20 and 24 meters (59, 65

and 79 feet). The lower price, smaller size and aggressive styling of the

design is intended to appeal to a younger clientele. The line will retain

Moonen fundamentals in terms of fuel savings, low noise and vibration

levels, and the comfort of a round-bilge hull. The 24-meter will be fitted

with Volvo ZF 4000 propulsion and have a top speed of 22 knots.

Moreover, this configuration leaves lots of space free in the forward

section for four cabins. An open-plan layout in the salon/wheelhouse

area will enhance the social aspect of the yacht, which is likely to

be helmed by the owner and his friends or family. Moonen also has

developed a new range of contemporary displacement yachts with

designer Rene van der Velden.

Feeling the Heat

FORT LAUDERDALE CAPTAINS EVENT

TOUTS THE USE OF THERMAL IMAGING

CAMERAS TO DETECT FIRES ON BOARD.

BY MARILYN DEMARTINI

The high-profile fire aboard the

catamaran Seafaris in Australia in

October brought to the fore the dangers

any vessel faces when such incidents

occur out of reach of help. The 135-foot

(41.1-meter) charter yacht burned to the

water with passengers and crew rescued

by a cargo ship.

“Fire on a yacht is quantum compared to

anything on ground,” states Captain Herb

Magney, who, as a charter captain and

volunteer firefighter, has seen fires on an

oil tanker, a sailing vessel and a high-speed

passenger ferry, but to his relief, never on

one of his client’s yachts.

At an event for captains during the Fort

Lauderdale International Boat Show in

November that featured representatives

of AIG Private Client Group Yacht

Division, and Bullard, a fire-protection

specialist company, AIG Yacht Loss

Prevention Specialist Carl Lessard touted

the advantages that modern fire-detection

technology brings to the table.

“Fire is the least frequent, but the most

severe property claim,” Lessard said. “Your

fire-alarm system will sound telling you

there is a problem, but in order to fight

a fire, you need to find it. It is essential

to save time, money and lives by quickly

detecting where the fire is located and

that requires a thermal imaging camera.”

Lessard cited an example of a crew that

took 28 minutes to find a fire on a 295-

foot (90-meter) yacht. By that time, it had

»

spread through the master suite and took

six hours to extinguish.

“With a thermal imaging camera, the fire

could have been located in minutes and

wWE SHOULD BE WARY OF STEREOTYPES, BUT

sometimes they’re unavoidable. Spend any time among

Europe’s hard-pressed boatbuilders and you’ll soon hear

that Chinese customers don’t really care about the engine

room, but they do want a big karaoke lounge. Then there is

the Indian client who reportedly told a shipyard he wouldn’t

need a crew cabin because his captain could sleep on the

flybridge. And British owners like a formal layout, with the

crew moving about unseen, like “Downton Abbey.”

And Americans? Well, apparently their concern for the

crew’s comfort verges on the socialist, while Mom likes to

do the cooking. That means an open-plan galley on the

main deck, and that is what Ferretti Yachts confidently

expects you to order on its new 750, which was launched

last September at the Cannes boat show.

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 35

LEFT: A view of the 750’s

stylish deck salon, with its

substantial windows, clean

lines and designer furnishings.

Note the tumblehome

in the sides, which

makes the outside look

sleeker and the inside

seem smaller. BELOW: A

palatial midships owner’s

suite—or karaoke lounge,

if you prefer.

A development of the successful 720, the

new model spearheads the Italian boatbuilder’s

latest thinking when it comes to international

sales. And there’s much more to this

thinking than a nod to U.S. catering habits.

The yacht is available with three alternative

flybridge arrangements—hardtop, roll bar or

bimini—the option of an open or enclosed

galley and a radical two-cabin layout for the

Far East that sees a big circular dining table

dominating the main deck, a karaoke lounge

in place of the master suite and the galley

where the starboard guest cabin should be.

That’s something I’d like to see, but the 750

on display had the standard Euro layout, with

four cabins down below, a roomy deck salon

and comfortable dining area—which are

both thoroughly drenched in daylight thanks

to gigantic windows—and the sportylooking

low-profile flybridge. The interior

was finished to Ferretti’s usual excellent standard

in oak and gray lacquer, with plenty

of high-quality designer furniture from the

likes of Cantori, OmniDecor and Calligaris.

A noticeable difference between this yacht

and the one it replaces is the large hydraulic

platform aft, which can take a 12-foot tender

weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

One thing that hasn’t changed on the 750

is the pronounced tumblehome in the superstructure,

which makes the main deck feel a

little less luxuriously large than it might otherwise.

The VIP cabin in the bow is also slightly

smaller than you might expect—but not

problematically so, unless you’re taller than

6 feet 2 inches, in which case your feet will

dangle over the end of the bed. Of course, the

other side of that coin is the impressive size

of the master suite. The rest of the yacht feels

pretty roomy as well. Headroom everywhere

is at least 6 feet 6 inches.

Although in most respects a standard boat,

the Ferretti 750 shown in Cannes did have

the larger of the two engine options—more

than 3,000 horsepower. We recorded a twoway

maximum speed of 33.1 knots, which

was impressive considering the conditions

(choppy), our fuel load (a ton and a half),

water level (almost a ton) and the number of

people on board (10). The MTU V8s provide

plenty of mid-range torque and the sort

of responsiveness to the throttles that makes

driving fun. ZF electronic SteerCommand

technology performed the same function at

the helm, giving the yacht lively and precise

handling. The trim tabs proved extremely

effective, and we needed them thanks to the

thousand-pound tender perched right aft.

With the flaps down, we were able to hold

the hull easily on plane at 16 knots. They

were also useful upwind to keep the bow

down and bring the hull’s finer forefoot sections

to bear against the seas.

With its new 750 model, Ferretti has taken

an already impressive machine and made it

markedly better, emphasizing its improved

tender-handling arrangements, its bewildering

variety of layout options and numerous

smaller refinements. It’s a coolly styled and

beautifully finished yacht that performs

extraordinarily well. It’s tempting to describe

it as an exemplary Italian motoryacht—but

that would be a stereotype.

The flybridge boasts this impressive and sociable expanse

of sunbed, plus the options of a rollbar, bimini or hardtop.

Both the main- and lower-deck layouts (above) are

designed to be customized for different markets.

Marriage

Convenience

of

The Darwin 96 from Italy’s Cantiere delle Marche

hits a sweet spot in size, amenities and range.

BY Alan Harper

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 41

iIF YOU LIKE THE IDEA OF A SUPERYACHT, BUT YOU’VE

nowhere to put one, you should maybe have a word with Cantiere

delle Marche. The Ancona, Italy, shipyard’s Darwin range might

look like it’s cashing in on the explorer trend, but there is a lot

more to it than that. In fact, it’s a concept that seeks to marry the

superyacht values of high-quality fit-out, bespoke interior design

and onboard space with the practicalities of a go-anywhere boat.

And by go-anywhere they mean just that: tough enough to cruise

Alaska and the Chilean fjords if that’s what you want, but small

enough to find a berth in your local yacht harbor. It’s a question not

just of priorities, but of balance.

The shipyard’s first project, two years ago, set the benchmark. Now,

the beamy and voluminous 86 has a bigger brother, the Darwin 96,

unveiled at last September’s Cannes boat show.

“It’s a development of the 86,” says Sergio Cutolo of naval architects

Hydro Tec. “It’s a bit like a new VW Golf: It looks like the old

one, but in fact everything is different.”

The new yacht, named Stella di Mare, has the same substantial beam

as the smaller model, but an extra 10 feet (3 meters) of length, dictated

by the owner, who liked the 86, but wanted more space. This

has allowed Cutolo to make the bow sections finer and more slippery,

and also to reshape the stern so it provides a little more lift under way.

The result is a hull that is faster than the 86, but no less fuel efficient.

Accommodations are organized along familiar lines—a midship

master suite with proper seafaring portlights rather than fashionable

hull windows, a VIP in the bow and a couple of twin cabins with

extra fold-down Pullman berths. Wide side decks worthy of a little

ship necessarily constrain the breadth of the deck salon. Nevertheless,

it is a comfortable area with generous seating and a formal dining

table forward on the port side close to the excellent galley. Up one

level, there is a private skylounge behind the wheelhouse, another big

dining table outside and space aft for a substantial tender of up to

19 feet (5.8 meters). Higher still on the sundeck is an external helm

station along with extra seating and sunbathing space.

Like her predecessor, the Darwin 96 has an imposing presence

alongside the dock, and that’s not just canny design. The hull is

constructed from steel ranging in thickness from eight to 12 millimeters

(⅓ to ½ inch), with a superstructure of aluminum. The

highly polished steel plate protecting the bow is as massive as it

looks—12 millimeters (½ inch) of 316L-grade stainless. Below the

waterline, the build looks worthy of a battleship with substantial

skegs to protect both propellers and rudders from grounding.

Stella di Mare has non-standard engines. Her owner, who moved up

from a fast fiberglass planing boat, decided that the 590 horsepower

per side offered by the standard Cat C18s wasn’t going to be enough

for a 200-tonner. He was wrong, of course, as he now acknowledges.

On our sea trial off Cannes, jaws dropped as we watched the MTU

fuel consumption readout leap from 31 gallons per hour at a relaxed

1,460 rpm to 96 gallons per hour at maximum revs—an extra 65

gallons per hour just to nudge the log from 10 knots to 13. As

Cutolo observed, the 96 is no different from most motoryachts in

that respect. The owner might push the throttles home once to see

how fast the yacht will go, then look at the fuel readout and never do

it again. So 10 knots is an excellent passagemaking speed, providing

the 96 with a cruising range of about 3,000 nautical miles. Drop back

to 1200 rpm and 8.5 knots and you can double that.

42 | FEBRUARY 2014

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Stella di Mare’s

main-deck salon—human-size, but comfortable;

the discreet skylounge, looking

forward to the wheelhouse; the yacht’s

VIP suite in the bow; and a view of the

upper deck, where the main tender is

also stowed.

In the wheelhouse, perched 20 feet above the water overlooking

that pugnacious bow, all was serene. The sun was going down over

red hills on La Napoule’s side of the bay. It was so serene, in fact, that

my sound meter seemed to have stopped working, so I took it down

below to check it. In the master cabin, amidships and adjacent to

the engine room, it read just 55dB(A). Forward in the VIP, the level

fell to 48dB(A). Of course, numbers don’t tell the whole story. The

reality is that you’d be able to hear your partner breathing.

And that is exactly how the Darwin people believe this yacht

should be used. It’s a time machine, they say. Your weekend starts

as soon as you arrive at the boat on Friday evening because you can

just cast off and go. You can have dinner under way, enjoy the sensation

of the sea slipping past and then sleep while your captain and

crew do their work. When you wake up, you’re there. The anchor

chain is running out and there’s time for a swim before breakfast.

Planing and displacement cruising are totally different things, and

the owner of Stella di Mare made the transition remarkably quickly.

Anticipating a four-week cruise after taking delivery of his 96 last

April, he soon got the bug and ended up spending the entire summer

aboard, using the new yacht in exactly the way it was designed

to be used. According to the captain, on a 5,000-mile voyage that

took in most areas of the Mediterranean, the yacht entered harbor

just five times. Its tremendous reserves of fuel are just part of the

story, of course. Independent cruising would be impossible without

the 96’s high-capacity watermakers and a truly stupendous storage

capacity for food and drink.

Long-range cruising is not just a question of priorities, but of getting

the balance right. Stella di Mare’s wine cellar, under the steps in

the lower corridor, is reputed to hold some 800 bottles. That seems

about right to me.

DILETTANTE, DEFIANT DOER

BY JILL BOBROW

PIER

Direct eye contact is an art; a glance that

lingers just long enough, a slight lean-in

with the shoulders, maybe a subtle tilt of

the head. It’s an art that Claudia Potamkin

has mastered—a crucial skill, perhaps, for a

woman who owns a 72-foot Mangusta—

and when she looks at you, you know

you’ve been seen.

Potamkin’s Mangusta, appropriately

christened Defiance, tops out at 36 knots.

For Potamkin, a woman on a mission who

lives her life at full throttle whether it’s in

business or philanthropy—both of which

she embraces out on the water with every

chance she gets—that’s roughly the equivalent

of first or second gear.

A committed entrepreneur and selfdescribed

dilettante, Potamkin (who even

named her first yacht Dilettante) has enjoyed

a rich and varied career. But while she has

played in many arenas, both personal and

professional, she absolutely is the real deal.

In her college days, her play-by-play and

Palmer Johnson’s

sport-superyacht

Lady M redefines

‘Made in the USA.’

BY Jill Bobrow

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 51

ABOVE: At night, the underwater lights in the aft-deck pool are mesmerizing

and enhance the overall aesthetics of Lady M.

WISCONSIN-BASED YACHTBUILDER PALMER JOHNSON

has been through some rocky times, but things appear to be on the

upswing. Not only has the company launched its largest yacht to

date and the largest aluminum yacht ever built in the U.S., but it

also has created an iconic 21st century sport yacht in the form of

the 213-foot (64.9-meter) Lady M. The company’s new flagship and

the first in its PJ 210 series, Lady M is a tour de force of design,

technology and American craftsmanship. She is a supremely sexy,

semi-displacement go-fast yacht.

Built at Palmer Johnson’s longtime base in Sturgeon Bay, Lady M

is the product of several constituencies including the Italian design

firm Nuvolari Lenard, which contributed her exterior styling and

interior design. She was built under the supervision of Moran Yacht

& Ship’s new-construction team, which worked closely with Palmer

Johnson and Nuvolari Lenard on various innovative design and

engineering decisions. She is slightly larger than her original 210-

foot (64-meter) design, due to special parameters set by her owners,

who purchased the boat as the project was evolving.

The new PJ 210 series is a quantum step up from the original 120-

foot (36.5-meter) SportYacht Palmer Johnson introduced several years

ago. With a 31-foot beam, the increased space available for easy living

and flexibility of arrangements is immediately noticeable. Nuvolari

Lenard took pains to transport the philosophy of the streamlined and

integrated exterior into the interior design. Every angle was built with

a purpose. For instance, the overheads on the side decks not only are

aesthetically aerodynamic, but they also yield exceptional headroom

to make it comfortable for even the tallest person to walk under. The

generous headroom is carried throughout the yacht.

As with any yacht her size, she reflects her owners’ personal preferences.

While Palmer Johnson has produced a safe and technologically

sound yacht, integral to the design is a sense of whimsy, coupled

with a fun-first attitude. The contemporary bridge deck has a fire

pit and outdoor cinema, as well as indoor/outdoor lounging and

dining areas. At her tallest point is a crow’s nest, which accommodates

a glass-walled gym. The feature was conceived by the owner,

who is knowledgeable about building and engineering.

On the main deck, the salon can be transformed into a cinema.

In the dining area, there are sliding-glass doors port and starboard

where fold-down balconies bring the outside in. A TV area

forward of the dining room enables small children to be close

to their parents if they don’t want to remain at the table for an

extended dining experience.

Dan Lenard, who showed me around the boat, enthusiastically

pointed out detail after detail created by the craftsmen at Palmer

Johnson: an exquisite handmade dining table, a bubble-glass floating

staircase, etched-glass columns. His comments were not idle

or spurious. Having worked with the top superyacht builders in

Europe, Lenard is well acquainted with high-quality workmanship.

Lady M’s worldly, sophisticated owners also happen to be firsttime

owners. Lady M is a stunning entry into the yacht world

and fulfills their desire to enjoy style and comfort while speeding

around to their favorite haunts.

“She wants to go fast and does it easily,” says her captain, Gordon

Scott. “There is no sweet spot, which is unusual—just smooth,

quiet and comfortable right up to 28 knots. Another amazing fact

is that we only lose one knot between half fuel load and full fuel

load. This is unheard of in other high-speed yachts. Lady M will

do 17.5 knots on one engine with a full load of fuel and water,

which is truly astounding.”

She also turns heads.

“The first time we entered Bonifacio, right at sunset, the town

stopped,” says Scott. “The patrons of the waterfront restaurants

all stood up. Heads appeared out of most windows and there

must have been three hundred people gathered on the quay where

we were tying up.”

There is much to love about Lady M’s outside spaces. The bridge

deck was integrated into the design of the boat with practical wing

stations complementing the aesthetics. The yacht’s cascading freshwater

pool with its glass bulkhead aft is counterbalanced by an

equally impressive multipurpose pool on the foredeck. Nuvolari

Lenard, which unabashedly takes credit for the current trend in aftdeck

pools, has upped its own game. The tender-garage/foredeck

pool is designed and engineered so that what appears to be a flushdeck

lazarette can open with doors that hinge inward. When there

is no tender, it can be filled with salt water.

“We made significant changes from the original 210 model,

redesigning and restructuring the foredeck to accommodate the

8.2-meter pool,” says Rob Moran of Moran Yacht & Ship. When

the doors close over the tender garage, it can be used as a touchand-go

helipad.

master suite on the bridge deck

the sleeping quarters, plus a

the lower level has distinctive

artwork integrated into the

design. The twin (pictured here)

features flowers climbing from

the headboard to the ceiling.

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 55

The owner was involved in

devising and engineering the

space for this crow’s-nest gym

and additional lounge area.

At the tip of the stem is a striking sculpture of a pouncing cat.

Some may see it as a jaguar or panther, but according to Lenard, it is

simply a generic cat. Designed by Nuvolari Lenard, it was executed

by the aluminum welders at Palmer Johnson—another testament to

the artistry of the yard. The cat motif recurs throughout the yacht

with cat’s-eye graphics adorning the transom and repeated as etched

emblems in the gates and skylights.

“We like to integrate everything, not just add layers,” says Lenard.

The owner’s suite is forward on this deck with panoramic views

and direct access to the foredeck. Just outside the bedroom is a

flush-mounted, fold-out gym machine, a drop-down terrace, and

a luxurious bathroom and wardrobe area. The owner suggested a

sliding wall between this area and the bedroom so an exerciser could

work out and not disturb his or her sleeping partner.

On the lower deck is a full-beam VIP cabin, two double cabins

and two twin cabins. The guest cabins each have their own signature

art displays such as an array of fish that appears to float from

the headboard over the ceiling.

Kyle Ahola, Palmer Johnson’s design manager, says, “A great deal

of care and passion went into the design and fabrication of many

aspects [of the yacht] such as the folding wengé wall sconces in the

VIP stateroom, the wooden-wave overhead panel in the owner’s

private lounge, the incorporation of varying metal works and

glass, the exterior LED-lit bubble walls, the many ways we were

able to generate indirect lighting and the sundeck skylight, which

incorporated the boat’s logo inside the glass in highly polished

stainless steel.”

Lenard says Palmer Johnson craftsmen took on the challenge of

this design detail and executed it to perfection.

“With a good orchestra, you can have good musicians, but you

need a conductor,” Lenard says. “At Palmer Johnson, they are good

at coordinating the entire effort.”

European yards use highly specialized interior outfitters, but at

Palmer Johnson, everything is done in-house.

“In Wisconsin,” Lenard says, “the pioneering spirit of America is

evident. They have a ‘can do’ attitude.”

Moran and Lenard laud Palmer Johnson for enduring a tough

build schedule, made tougher by having to reestablish its workforce.

Prior to the Lady M build, the yard had laid off many workers. But

with Lady M, the company retooled the shipyard and rehired all its

former workers and more. Approximately 200 people worked on

Lady M. With a new 50-meter under construction and a new niche

to service, the workers appear poised to stay.

“They are second to none in the sport yacht field,” Lenard says of

the builder.

RIGHT: According to the builder, the Columbus 40M Sport Hybrid has a

top speed of 22 knots in full diesel-engine mode.

BalanceofPower

With her dashing exterior lines, crisp interior

design and innovative powertrain, the Columbus

40M Sport Hybrid is causing a stir. But is the

new superyacht from Italy’s Palumbo Shipyard

the final word in alternative propulsion

technologies?

BY Justin Ratcliffe PHOTOS Thierry Ameller

THE VERY MENTION OF HYBRID PROPULSION USUALLY

brings with it fashionable theorizing about global warming and carbon

footprints. Hybrid propulsion, while not a cure-all solution,

can indeed provide reductions in fuel consumption, emissions and

noise levels. The Columbus 40M Sport Hybrid, built by Palumbo

Shipyard in Naples, is the first motoryacht to receive RINA’s

“Hybrid Propulsion Y” along with “Green Star Plus Platinum”

notation, based on a performance index that covers all aspects of

the vessel’s impact on the environment. But it is arguable that ecofriendliness

is not the main attraction of hybrid propulsion. Much

of the confusion arises from comparisons with hybrid automobiles,

a misleading analogy as yachts are required to operate in a very different

environment. They cannot, for example, recharge their batteries

when braking or coasting downhill.

60 | FEBRUARY 2014

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 61

“When we consider hybrid cars, we usually

put the emphasis on energy saving

and reduced emissions,” explains Sergio

Cutolo, who heads up Hydro Tec, the

firm of naval architects that designed

the 131-foot (40-meter) Columbus Sport Hybrid for Palumbo.

“Hybrid propulsion at sea has a different set of objectives and provides

different, but just as significant, advantages. Batteries are not

the answer on larger vessels because they’re big and heavy, have a

limited autonomy and lifespan, and cannot cater to all the hotel

power demands.”

In line with this thinking, the Columbus Sport Hybrid does away

with battery banks to focus on the efficient and flexible power management

of its EcoProp Hybrid package, which was specifically

devised by Siemens Marine Solutions to meet the requirements of

yachts and small ships. The system combines twin 1,920-horsepower

MTU main engines with two 60kW electric motors and two 80kW

diesel generators (plus an emergency genset) in various operational

modes. One mode is for cruising up to the yacht’s top speed of 22

knots, when the main engines provide the propulsive power. A second

mode is when the yacht is steaming up to its cruising speed of

15 knots, when the two electric motors can work as shaft generators

to provide the hotel power demands. A third mode is for cruising

at economical speed, when the diesel generators power the electric

motors to drive the yacht at 7.5 knots in extremely quiet conditions

with exceptionally frugal fuel consumption of just eight gallons per

hour. There is also the option to cruise with one main engine only

driving the two shafts: one directly, while the other is driven by an

electric motor that is powered by the second motor operating as a

shaft generator.

But there is no such thing as a free lunch, especially when it comes

to propelling a large yacht through the water. Hybrid systems are

generally costlier, heavier and bulkier than a conventional diesel

drivetrain. In terms of cost, Palumbo’s client embraced the hybrid

solution from the start. But from the shipyard’s perspective, considerable

thought had to go into the layout of the engine room to take

62 | FEBRUARY 2014

A schematic of the EcoProp Hybrid drivetrain developed by

Siemens. The engine room (below) is crowded, but as an

unmanned machinery space, it can be monitored from the bridge.

into account the separate gearbox, clutch and various flexible couplings

between diesel engines and electric motors, plus the parallel

drivetrains that each require their own cooling, lube and monitoring

systems. The result is an engine room packed to the proverbial

gills. Gianpaolo Lapenna, Palumbo’s project manager on the vessel,

prefers to liken the space to the inner workings of a Rolex watch,

but admits “the biggest challenge was how to place all the auxiliary

equipment associated with the hybrid system without impinging on

the guest spaces.” Fortunately, as an unmanned machinery space,

the systems can be monitored from the bridge without the permanent

presence of a crewmember in the engine room.

Outside of technical manuals, the terms “diesel-electric” and

“hybrid” tend to be used interchangeably. But Jeff Bowles,

technical director at Donald L. Blount & Associates, the

Chesapeake, Virginia–based firm of naval architects and marine

engineers, points to a subtle distinction. Diesel-electric drive systems

use diesel engines as generators to either power electric motors

or to charge battery banks that will drive electric motors. In other

words, there is no direct shaft connection between the propellers

and the diesel engines. A hybrid diesel-electric uses diesel engines

as generators, but also as propulsive engines to directly drive the

propellers. In any case, as with the Columbus Sport Hybrid, all

the energy ultimately derives from burning diesel fuel, whether

directly or indirectly. For Bowles, however, “a true hybrid suggests

the integration of an alternative or recouped energy source, as in

hybrid gasoline-electric automobiles.”

As an example of a “true” hybrid, Bowles refers to Royal Huisman’s

Ethereal, the 190-foot (58-meter) ketch delivered to her owner,

Bill Joy, in 2009. By allowing the propeller to freewheel while

under sail, the prop acts as a generator to charge battery banks

(the WhisperPower hybrid propulsion system aboard Holland

Jachtbouw’s J-Class yacht Rainbow employs a similar solution).

Naval architect Rob Doyle of Rob Doyle Design in Kinsale,

Ireland, worked closely on the Ethereal project with Ron Holland.

“Ethereal could run on silent ship for eight to 10 hours on the

battery bank, including the a/c, but the electrical system behind

today of hybrid

propulsion is flexibility.’

J. RATCLIFFE

it was massive,” Doyle remarks. “The computers managing the

power drain and recharge were extremely complex and you needed

a specialist electrician on board to manage them. Bill Joy loved the

project, but other owners would turn around and ask where the

advantage was for them beyond bragging rights.”

For his part, Jeff Bowles regards many of the advantages of hybrid/

diesel-electric propulsion as perceived rather than real, and even

argues that in certain circumstances such systems can be less efficient

than a conventional diesel setup.

“The reality is that if you look at the typical operational profile of

a motoryacht, hybrid or diesel-electric propulsion just doesn’t make

that much sense,” he argues. “This is not to say that hybrid technology

does not or cannot work on a yacht, rather it only makes sense

under the correct operational profile and a prudent owner shouldn’t

be swayed by industry buzzwords such as ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly’

when it’s really only adding cost without benefit.”

The argument that hybrid propulsion is necessarily quieter than

a conventional drive train can also be countered. “Using the shafts

as generators can produce more noise and vibration because the

shafts are always spinning, and if the A-brackets are under a cabin

somewhere, that’s going to be annoying,” says Doyle. He goes on

to point out that diesel engine rooms are becoming increasingly

quiet, to the point where owners are more likely to complain

about the whoosh of air from the a/c than noise from the engines

or generators.

“The main advantage of hybrid propulsion today is flexibility,”

concludes Cutolo. “Batteries are the weakest link because you still

need to use energy-hungry bow thrusters and have some reserve

power. With everything we’re now studying, diesel engines are still

the best option in terms of power production, despite all the noise,

vibration and pollution they produce. This will only change when

we have workable fuel-cell technology.”

In this context, the Columbus Sport Hybrid represents an aesthetical

and technological step forward for owners who are mindful

of environmental issues but are not ready to compromise when

it comes to looks and performance. By providing the freedom to

mix and match diesel and electrical power systems so that engines

and generators operate at peak efficiency, it provides a progressive

yet rational solution in an industry where diesel mechanical is

likely to be the most efficient and cost-effective means of power

production for some time to come.

CONTEMPORARY CALM

“A yacht that is built only on the basis of technical considerations

will be an ugly boat,” says Sergio Cutolo. “The preliminary

layout represents the designer’s ideas as well as the

owner’s wishes, but I always try to read between the lines. If

you are able to create the right feeling at this stage, then you

already see the boat and you know what kind of hull you are

going to design; you detect what the critical points will be and

everything flows naturally.”

With this in mind, Cutolo was keen that the exterior profile

reflected the yacht’s sophisticated hybrid propulsion, monitoring

system by Onyx Marine Automation, integrated I-Bridge

by Team Italia and the handheld wireless Vessel Maneuvering

Assistant device from Xenta Systems. With its near-vertical

stem and automotive-inspired detailing, such as the Aston

Martin look alike ventilation grilles, the yacht certainly

was for flexible living spaces, so a sliding partition between

the double guest cabins on the lower deck allows them to

be converted into a single VIP cabin. To add texture to the

décor, the designers introduced scallops and three-dimensional

shapes into doors, ceiling panels and the fitted furniture,

exceptional on a yacht of this size—the main salon and fullbeam

Clean, Lean

Still Mean

The modern superyacht engine

room becomes a destination.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY Shaw McCutcheon

The 154-foot

(46.9-meter)

Usher’s pristine

engine room

features two red

V-16 MTU diesels

that transform the

space into a virtual

work of art.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE ENGINE ROOM OF A

yacht was a hot, noisy, smelly place that only an engineer could

love. To the owner, the engine room was a place to be avoided,

in part because it conflicted with the gracious, elegant spaces

elsewhere on the boat, and in part because the inner workings

were so incomprehensible. It may have been the beating heart

that brings the vessel to life and keeps it moving, but God forbid

the owner hears any thumping or other evidence that the

room exists. Predictably, then, many of the advances in engine

room design have focused on concealing all traces of it.

Today, however, the engine room has come full circle, from

a necessary inconvenience to a point of pride. Modern superyacht

engine rooms are light years advanced from their grimy

forebears. Most now resemble hospital operating rooms in their

obsessive attention to organizational detail and cleanliness.

Hampshire II, a 258-foot (78.6-meter) Feadship launched last

year, sports an enclosed, air-conditioned catwalk through the

engine room for the benefit of awed guests.

Then there are yachts such as Mr. Terrible, a 154-foot (46.9-

meter) Delta built in 2007 originally for an auto-racing family

and now called Usher. The engine room, with two specially

painted fire-engine-red MTU V16 diesels, was created to be

the nautical equivalent of a showroom hot rod and is often the

first place visitors are taken. The bilges were faired to externalhull

quality, and many elements, right down to the nuts and

bolts, are polished stainless steel. The room is evenly illuminated

by 32 lights, each lightbox specially constructed with sounddeadening

insulation and lead shielding so as not to corrupt the

room’s overall soundproofing in the overhead. All the ship’s systems

were set up to accommodate easy maintenance. The batteries,

for instance, slide out for easy access; each air-conditioning unit is

removable by simply undoing a couple of bolts; sinks were specially

designed just to handle fuel and oil waste.

But there is more than just aesthetics involved in these projects.

Yacht designers have realized that an immaculate, well-organized

engine room means less costly time in the repair yard, a better-run

vessel and enhanced value for the yacht when it’s sold.

In 2006, Delta Marine launched the 240-foot (73.1-meter)

motor yacht Laurel. During the design phase, the engineering team

managed to extract from the owner and the interior designers a

few extra feet of space in the engine room. There’s a natural tension

between engineers and the interior design team because each is

clamoring for more space.

“The owner wants to have a lot of space on a yacht,” says Kim

Nguyen, who has been designing engine rooms for Christensen for

more than two decades. “They don’t want to sacrifice too much in

the guest cabins so the engine room can be bigger so you can access

everything. I agree with the engineer’s agenda, and it makes his job

easier, but that’s not the owner’s agenda.”

Simon Liebke, until recently the yacht’s chief engineer, praised

the owner for the extra three feet of space. “It’s made a massive

difference as far as layout and being able to maintain the equipment,”

he says.

The engine room’s not perfect, he says, but the builder did a lot

right. The rear bulkhead of the engine room, for example, is “soft”

in that it can be easily removed. That recently allowed the yacht’s

three generators to be replaced through the bulkhead, instead of the

normal procedure of moving them out through a hole cut in the

hull side. The whole operation took only two weeks.

Engine room design in the past has largely concentrated on

two different tracks. On the utilitarian side, various systems—

generators, air-conditioning units, watermakers, piping, etc., must

be placed where they don’t interfere with other systems. The other

track involves concealing as much as possible any evidence that

the engine room exists. Years ago, owners were resigned to noisy

systems belowdecks when the boat was running. In today’s yachts,

however, technological advances in sound control mean barely a

whisper in the staterooms just adjoining the engine room while

the boat is running. This is especially true of displacement yachts,

which have more interior space to work with.

Today, it’s commonplace that all the main equipment—engines,

generators, air-conditioning units, etc.—are on rubberized vibrationdampening

mounts. Overheads and surrounding bulkheads are

thick with lead and other noise-control materials. Essentially, noise

and vibration reduction has come so far that further improvements

have only a marginal effect.

“The boats are now so quiet that you have to work on other

things like air-conditioning and other noise sources for improvements,”

Ronno Schouten, chief designer for Feadship, explains. So

Feadship, for one, is focusing on such items as the bow thruster,

which on many yachts is very noisy. The improvements increasingly

involve electrically driven—and much quieter—rim thrusters.

Another good reason for a yacht owner to focus on engine room

design is simple, but sometimes ignored: crew satisfaction.

“If the machinery space is well laid out, accessible and maintenance

is addressed, it makes it easier for a shipboard engineer to do

their job and like their job,” says Delta Marine’s Dan Filonowich.

Jed White—until recently chief engineer on April Fool, a 200-

foot (60.9-meter) Feadship—found that in a well-laid-out engine

room with all the equipment segregated into relevant areas, it was

the little things that made the difference. For instance, instead of

a normal home-style refrigerator in the galley, Feadship had placed

the unit’s cooling compressors in the engine room, allowing him to

work on the fridge from his own domain instead of messing up the

galley. “It was a dream to work in,” he says.

One of the biggest drivers in future engine room design will

revolve around sensitivity to the environment and ways to get better

mileage out of a gallon of diesel fuel. Front-line engineers such

as White suggest, for instance, that using heat naturally generated

in the engine room can be harnessed to pre-heat various systems

and reduce fuel use. For example, if hot water can be pre-heated by

the engines or exhaust systems, relatively little electricity would be

needed by the vessel’s water heaters.

Another challenge comes from the International Maritime

Organization (IMO), which is proposing new limits on pollutants

from ships. Reinforcing IMO’s position, some countries and ports

are also proposing tighter restrictions of their own on both atmospheric

and waterborne pollutants. Yachts will require more sophisticated

treatment systems to meet these new regulations.

“The treatment systems for exhausts are very, very large,”

Falonowich notes. “We talk about how engine rooms are going to

change in the future. That singlehandedly is going to be the biggest

factor in the next five years.”

The yachting experience has always been about going out on the

water and having fun. But some of today’s yachts are also celebrating

something else—that a yacht is also a self-sufficient organism,

virtually independent of the environment around it. The engine

room is the source of that independence, a space to be extolled.

MODERN TRENDS IN

ENGINE ROOM DESIGN

“Today it’s all in the details,” says Rob Doyle, who

heads up Rob Doyle Design in Kinsale, Ireland. “Piping

and cable tracks, for example, are pre-designed in 3-D

to keep diameters and distances to a minimum and

facilitate maintenance. Much of the focus is on making

the engine room a more pleasant place for the crew to

work, so sound shielding for main engines is becoming

more common, whereas in the past the engineer always

had to wear ear protectors. Sound dampening is also

a top consideration for owners who do not want to

hear generators and pumps kicking in, or noise from the

ventilation and exhaust ducting when they’re enjoying

dinner on the aft deck. Another area that has developed

dramatically over the last few years is electrics. Higher

hotel loads and computerized phasing of generators to

avoid power spikes has meant bigger and more complex

switchboards, which has led to air-conditioned control

rooms even on smaller superyachts.

“For most owners, the engine room is just that—a

room with engines in it. But for others it has become a

trophy room to show off to their guests, much as they

would the engine bay under the hood of a supercar.

We’re currently working on an 86-meter project for one

such client that has a soundproofed glass corridor running

through the two-tier engine room. We have another

client for a 40-meter project who has asked for full headroom

in the engine room, whereas once the engineer

would have had to crouch to get in there, even though

this affects the height of the main salon above.”

—Justin Ratcliffe

Already, Feadship is building another yacht with a catwalk through

the engine room, and this time there will be a seating area so visitors

can reflect on the heart of the organism.

“We want to celebrate the machine-ness of it,” says Tim Hamilton,

Feadship’s American representative. “Being able to walk through

it, almost like a guest space, is celebrating the fact that in the end

you’re living on this living machine.”

SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN THE EARLY 1990s, ITALY’S WALLY YACHTS

has successfully established a niche in the superyacht category, delivering a

series of eye-catching, game-changing sailing yachts and powerboats. The

company’s latest launch, the 100-foot (30.5-meter) Wally Cento Magic

Carpet 3 was on display the first three days of last September’s Monaco Yacht

Show, after which she was delivered up the coast to prepare to compete in the

2013 Voiles de Saint-Tropez. We were invited to make the sail with her owner,

Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, who until recently was the chairman of beauty products

company L’Oréal. Magic Carpet 3 is his third Wally. His focus with this

yacht was speed and racing, and Wally delivered the goods.

Owen-Jones spent more than 30 years with the French-based beauty products

giant. He began by selling the company’s shampoo and moved up the ranks to

become its chairman and chief executive officer at the age of 42. While at the

helm of L’Oréal, he greatly expanded the company’s reach, broadening it from

a Eurocentric brand to a globally recognized cosmetics company.

the designer, likes to

rock the boat when

it comes to creating

uncluttered and eyecatching

craft with a

distinctive Wally look.

FRANCES HOWORTH

Owen-Jones first began sailing when he was at Oxford University

in the 1960s and years later became the first-ever customer of

Luca Bassani, the man who designs and controls the Wally brand.

Approaching his 50th birthday, Owen-Jones fell in love with the

clean lines Bassani bestowed upon the first Wally, a boat he christened

Magic Carpet in 1994.

“She was fast and I enjoyed racing her, but I knew we could do

better, and we did,” says Owen-Jones. “With Magic Carpet 2 we

ironed out the creases, learning from our experiences and building

a much better boat. Her naval architecture was from German Frers,

and she sailed like a witch.”

Magic Carpet 3 , the new love in his yachting life, is the latest evolution

in Wally’s high-tech, racing-performance stable. As with all

Wallys, she represents speed and agility married to spacious and

comfortable interiors.

“I wanted three things out of my new yacht,” Owen-Jones says,

“more speed, more comfort, and I wanted to be able to take her

cruising. This new 100-foot ‘box rule’ class was designed in response

to the demands of competitive yachtsmen like me. This is number

two in the [Wally Cento] series and there is a third under construction.

The first was Hamilton, built for Sir Charles Dunstone to the

designs of the naval architects Judel/Vrolijk. Like this boat, she has

a beautiful planing hull coupled with a powerful sailplan and movable

ballast. Composite sailing yachts like these are expected to surf,

plane and exceed 25 knots downwind, and we do. It is achieved

using new-generation carbon composites and a passion for keeping

the weight low, and that’s our secret weapon over Hamilton. We

weigh less and go faster.

“I told Luca to weigh everything that comes on board the yacht,”

says Owen-Jones. “We used titanium screws to hold it all together

and I even offered a bonus to the shipyard workers for every pound

of weight they could save during the construction process. The boat

has a displacement of 50 tons. If you take out the keel and the mast,

that figure drops to 18 tons, but if you want me to tell you the

weight of the keel I will have to kill you as soon as I have done so,

because that’s my big secret.

“We wanted a stiff boat because the more stiff she is, the faster she

can sail. But I wanted her to be easy to handle, so we have employed

many of the advanced Wally sail-handling features to deliver easy

control for single-handed sailing, or when I want to, indulgent family

cruising.”

Bassani is justifiably proud of his latest creation. He has been

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Magic Carpet 3 may be fast

and lightweight, but that does not mean creature

comforts are swept away. Belowdecks, the sofa on the

starboard side has all the comforts of home; spacious

and gracious, the level of luxury accommodation

on this racing sailboat is to megayacht standards.

Six guests are carried in three cabins, two of which

feature twin beds. The master suite with its king-size

bed is in the forepart of the yacht. The dining salon to

sailing for 40 years, designing and building his first custom-built

yacht for his own family in 1991. In the case of Magic Carpet 3 , he is

both the exterior designer and the interior designer.

“The Wally race rules state clearly that before racing, you cannot

remove anything that is normally kept on board,” Bassani says.

“That means everything has to weigh nothing at the start. We made

the wash basins from carbon, we used an ash veneer on a honeycomb

core to make the furniture, and we even put the light switches

in the deckhead. There are two reasons for this: The first is that

every bulkhead gives the boat structural strength and you would

harm that by drilling holes through it; the second is that to run

the cable down to the ordinary level of a light switch means more

wiring, and every inch of wire weighs something.”

Belowdecks, she is quite the cruising yacht. If anything is missing

from her comprehensive inventory, the casual onlooker is not going

to spot it. This yacht has everything she needs to make a comfortable

cruising holiday home. We cannot help but notice the clatter

of the engine when underway and we comment accordingly.

“You are right,” Bassani says when we point that out. “It is too

noisy. I think we may have scrimped too much on the sound insulation

and we might have to swallow the weight factor and add some

more back in. Don’t forget, this yacht is not for motoring. You take

her out of the harbor, hoist the sails, then you fold the propeller

and its shaft up inside the body of the hull to reduce drag and gain

speed. There is not so much noise then.”

When racing, the running of the yacht’s main engine serves not to

drive her forward, but to power the devices that provide the muscle

to the hydraulic winches.

The naval architecture for Magic Carpet'! is by John Reichel and

his partner Jim Pugh, who together founded and act as joint vice

presidents of Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. Born in Oyster Bay, New

York, Reichel graduated from the University of Michigan's naval

architecture program. He has been designing performance sailing

yachts for nearly 30 years. He began as an apprentice with Doug

Peterson in the early 1980s during that firm's domination of lOR

racing and has gone on to create some of the fastest of all sailboats

on the racing circuit.

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating," Pugh adds, "and by

that I mean you only have to look at recent regattas in Porto Cervo

where we were pitched against Hamilton. She came 5'h overall and

we were placed 2nd . "

On our run to Saint-Tropez, the magic of Magic Carpet'! became

apparent when we realized just how fast we were sailing in so little

wind. With just 6 knots of breeze, we had the yacht flying along at

10.7 knots over the ground.

Owen-Jones takes back the wheel and his eyes dart up to the telltales

fluttering on the heads ail. He flicks his wrist a fraction and the

speed increases by half a knot. Asked whether there is anything he'd

do to improve the yacht's performance, he ponders for a minute and

says, "I cannot imagine a life without this sort of challenge in it. I

love it so much. But I do admit, it would be nice if we could use

hydrofoils. Think how much faster we could go." •

Benetti’s Ocean Paradise:

An owner/designer’s perspective

on bringing the magic of Asia to

the seven seas.

BY Frances and Michael Howorth

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 85

The exquisite and inviting main-deck entry aboard Ocean Paradise quickly

establishes a Zen-like design tone that resounds throughout the vessel.

THE 180-FOOT (54.8-METER) BENETTI OCEAN PARADISE

first appeared in the public eye at the Genoa Charter Yacht Show

in May 2013 and caused quite a stir among charter brokers. They

all seemed to have one-word descriptions for this new yacht: fresh,

refreshing, Zen-like, tranquil, innovative, gorgeous. Then Ocean

Paradise disappeared from view, whisked back to the shipyard in

Livorno to appear once again to yet more acclaim at September’s

yacht show in Monaco.

The magic of Asia is pervasive on board this yacht, and it comes

as little surprise to learn that Adrian Lee, her designer and owner,

hails from Singapore. Lee is the mastermind behind Klapsons—a

small but fast-developing chain of boutique hotels in Singapore—

and is a member of the board in the family-controlled company

Raimon Land, whose property developments in Bangkok and

across Thailand are among the tallest and most prestigious and, he

admits, “perhaps the most expensive.”

Lee designed the interior of Ocean Paradise not only for his own

use, but, being a hotelier, he decided that the yacht must also earn

her keep as a charter yacht. We met with him on the aft deck while

the yacht was berthed stern-to in Monaco. He was frank and open

about his yachting adventures.

“Look, nothing in my world is a toy,” he says. “I created this yacht

to be the most spectacular of charter yachts, one that people will

clamor to get on board. Everything has been done with purpose and

everything is custom-made. That is what boutique fashion is about.

There is nothing on board this yacht that you can buy in a shop. We

have every element made especially for us.”

He describes the décor as “thought provoking.”

86 | FEBRUARY 2014

Ocean Paradise owner Adrian Lee

ON THIS PAGE: A walkthrough of the

main-deck salon and dining area reveals

the yacht’s remarkable character and

deliberate emphasis on boutique

fashion. The mood on board is a dreamy

restfulness, with special design attention

paid to an environment elegantly

flooded with natural light, custom-made

accoutrements and even a crystal

skylight set into the uppermost deck.

YACHTS INTERNATIONAL | 87

“I wanted people to come on board and relax,” he says. “We have

perfected the art of relaxing in the East and I have brought that art

form to the West aboard this yacht. She is restful. The Bonsai trees are

there to inspire thought and question life. They need special light and

glass surrounds to keep them in pristine condition on the yacht, and

we spare no effort in creating the right environment for their survival.”

The same level of dedication to the environment is an ethos that

runs through the design of Ocean Paradise. It is all-encompassing,

covering passenger amenities such as LED lighting and an innovative

refrigeration and air-conditioning system that effectively

recycles air, all the way through to the silicone-based antifouling

paint used on the hull, which is effective, but less harmful to marine

life. It was this attention to detail and concern for the way yachts

potentially pollute that won Lee and his yacht a special Green Plus

award from the classification company RINA. His Serene Highness

Prince Albert II of Monaco presented the award to Lee and officials

from the Benetti shipyard during the Monaco show.

“Getting that recognition is important to me,” says Lee. “It helps

justify the hard work we put into everything we did to create this

special yacht. My family has had many boats over the years including

our last, the Benetti Ocean Dream. From each of them we have

learned. On this yacht, you will see there is a dayhead on each

and every deck. We have created a huge upper deck with a massive

amount of outdoor leisure space. We had fun designing the

carbon-fiber bar around the Jacuzzi, and have you seen the gym we

installed up there?

“Just as important are all the things you will not see or understand

at first glance. There is so much hidden storage space on

board. I do not believe there is such a thing as too much storage.

I love to see every available space utilized and I love to capture the

imagination of those who look around spaces that I have designed.

Have you seen the way the bulkheads slide out in the bathrooms

to reveal storage? Did you know that the smooth black stones that

surround the bath are all hand picked from a riverbed high up in

the Swiss Alps? I commissioned many of the details myself, such

as the wardrobe door handles, which were designed by the winner

of a design competition; the light switches; the light fixtures;

the automatic hatch and panel latches; the chromatic contrasting

leather stitching; and the completely clad leather interiors for

lockers and closets.”

The yacht has four guest cabins, each located on the lower deck,

with access from a central hall connected to the main-deck foyer.

Each has its own spacious head and views of the sea through ample

portholes. The owner’s suite is located on the forward portion of

the main deck and spans the full beam. With its expansive head

and a side balcony that can be used while under way, it is a most

delightful and restful area that is flooded with light. Light is of

primary importance throughout the entire vessel. Natural light filters

through abundant openings in the yacht’s structure, including

through a crystal skylight set into the uppermost deck. LEDs are

employed throughout and feature temperature-controlled coloring

to match that of the natural light.

Below the waterline, Ocean Paradise sticks to the classic

configuration. Her steel displacement hull, with its displacement of

651 tons, is powered by twin 2,367-horsepower Caterpillar 3512C

diesels. The configuration gives her a cruising range of 4,000 nautical

miles at 12 knots, a top speed of 17 knots and a fast cruising

speed of 15.5 knots that uses 85 percent of the available propulsion

power.

Fast, economical and as environmentally friendly as you can get on

a superyacht, Ocean Paradise is, in the words of her owner, “pretty

special and unlike any other yacht you have ever seen in a magazine,

and that is quite deliberate.”

Chasing the Checkers

IF YOU’RE AN AUTO-RACING FAN, CONSIDER THESE YACHT CHARTER OPTIONS.

By Kim Kavin

It’s that time of year again, when marina slips for the Monaco Grand Prix

sell out faster than Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari can chase Sebastian Vettel’s

Red Bull Racing Renault around the Formula One racetrack. But if you

can’t make it to Monaco this year and still need your live racing fix, there

are a few other options to rev your racing-soul engine—and some of

them might surprise you.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is similar in concept to Monaco’s

with viewing from yachts in a track-side marina, is scheduled to run in

late October. If tradition holds, at least a couple of international-caliber

yachts will be available for charter there, although some may be charging

high-season rates given the growing popularity of this race since it was

first held in 2009.

If Europe or the Middle East seem too far to travel for a high-speed

fix, then how about a yacht charter in scenic Weehawken, New Jersey?

Formula One organizers have announced a provisional race (meaning

“tentatively planned”) for June 1 through the townships of Weehawken

and West New York, New Jersey, with Manhattan providing a scenic

backdrop. There is no marina right on the proposed course, as in

Monaco or Abu Dhabi, but Chelsea Piers is

Also in the States is Florida’s Daytona 500,

the granddaddy of all NASCAR races, scheduled

this year for February 23. You can’t

anchor right next to the track here either, but

you can book a slip at Aquamarina Daytona

(ilovemymarina.com), which used to be known

as Daytona Marina and Boat Works and has

long been the favorite gathering spot for yacht

owners who have a NASCAR affiliation.

And if none of those dates or locations works

for you, then consider a charter aboard a

yacht built by racing aficionados. The 164-foot

(50-meter) Trinity Wheels is owned by Rick

Hendrick, a retired driver who owns Hendrick

Motorsports, which fields Sprint Cup Series

cars for Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie

Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

There’s also Aurelia, the 122-foot (37.1-meter)

Heesen whose orange-and-blue hull paint

(and giant “No. 10” detail) is meant to echo

the color scheme of the Gulf Racing cars. Even

the tenders, personal watercraft and Seabobs

on board are painted to match—and the

owner continually replaces them to ensure

that he has the newest, fastest versions on

board for charter clients to use.

Wheels is based in Florida and the Bahamas at

THE 173-FOOT (53-METER) OCEANCO SUNRISE was built in 2000 and

year fool you, though; Sunrise is a contemporary head-turner that went through a substantial

refit in 2010 and she boasts many of the features aboard today’s newest yachts. Her sundeck

and other outdoor areas are spacious, there is gym equipment on board, Wi-Fi is available for

charter guests and everyone should be comfortable at anchor thanks to zero-speed stabilizers.

Six staterooms accommodate 12 guests, and with 13 crew, service provided is better

than a one-to-one ratio. Sunrise spends summers in the Eastern Mediterranean and winters in

the Maldives, where superyachts of her caliber can be hard to come by for charter. Her 14.5-

knot cruising speed should make it possible for guests to cover a good amount of ground

during one- or two-week itineraries in the Indian Ocean this winter. The lowest weekly base

rate to charter Sunrise is approximately $283,000 (€210,000).

SUNREEF LEVANTE

Catamarans are coming into their own as true luxury-yacht designs,

and the 80-foot (24-meter) Sunreef Levante is one of the finest new

examples of the breed. This 2013 launch is the first in Sunreef’s

Carbon line, which was created to offer light displacement, solid

performance and serious speed. Sailing at 15 knots aboard Levante

is easy, and reaching 20-plus knots is more than possible in the right

conditions, according to Sunreef. The yard uses the same kind of

black-box technology found on commercial airplanes to monitor

Levante’s performance and offer suggestions on further tweaks to

her rigging (and to future designs). Levante is also the first-ever

Sunreef to have an owner’s suite on the main deck to take advantage

of the prime views out the large windows. Eight to 10 guests

are accommodated in four staterooms, with three crew on board

for service. Levante is based in the Western Mediterranean during

summers and is making her debut for charter this winter in the

Caribbean. The lowest weekly base rate is $53,000 with 10 guests.

LLOYD’S SHIPS IN AUSTRALIA, ROBUSTO

Robusto was one of the most talked-about yachts at the 2013 Mediterranean Yacht

Brokers Association (MYBA) charter show in Italy, thanks to a three-year refit that

included her 141-foot (43-meter) hull being stripped back to bare metal while her

interior and exterior were completely rebuilt. Originally launched in 1992 by Lloyd’s

Ships in Australia, Robusto has just entered the charter market looking like an entirely

new yacht with a contemporary décor, modern amenities and smart navy-blue hull

paint that helps her stand out in any port. The new “vista lounge” forward had a lot

of people talking, not to mention enjoying the 180-degree views that its wraparound

windows afford. Also noteworthy is the new indoor dining room, which can be

closed off from the rest of the yacht and used for meetings or conferences during

corporate charters. Ten overnight guests are accommodated in five staterooms, one

of which is ideal for children or supernumeraries with a single berth and a Pullman.

The lowest weekly base rate to charter Robusto is about $111,000 (€82,000).

Cellar & Galley

A CHEF AND A MASTER SOMMELIER SERVE UP THE PERFECT PAIRING

CHEF TYRONE

Tyrone Power was born in

Australia to English parents who

later moved back to England to

raise their family. As generations

of his family have been involved

in the restaurant and hospitality

business, it was only natural that

Power would develop a keen

palate and interest in cuisine

from a very young age.

As a young adult, Power

attended a technical college

in England, completed his chef

apprenticeship and moved back

to Australia to work in some of

the most well-known restaurants

in Melbourne, including Ezard,

followed by a stint with Greg

Malouf at MoMo, as well as the

Regent and Savoy hotels.

A love of travel combined

with his love of cooking led

Power to join the yachting

industry in 2004. Since then,

he has cultivated an impressive

history working on some

of the most distinguished

motoryachts, such as the

213-foot White Rose of Drachs,

which quickly promoted him

to head chef. Prior to joining

Lazy Z, Power worked on the

140-foot Renegade, followed

by the 194-foot Senses (which

led him on a world cruise)

and the impressive 240-foot

Plan B. During a short hiatus

from yachting, Power ventured

back to England to open his

own restaurant, which was

recognized with the coveted

AA Rosette award.

Power’s easygoing personality,

along with his genius in the

galley, contributes to the

success that he continues to

enjoy while tantalizing the

Lazy Z charter guests with his

culinary masterpieces.

notes of the lamb.

The strawberry soup with

buttermilk panna cotta requires

a wine with finesse and mild

characteristics. The 2011 Finca

La Estacada, Vino Rosado

Semidulce de Aguja, Spain, is

perfect for this dessert. Slightly

fizzy, it has just the right amount

of sweetness for this refreshing

dish. Made from the Tempranillo

grape, this wine is lively and

bright. The wild berry flavors

combined with the strawberry

soup dance upon your palate

like a symphony. There is

just enough tangy acidity to

balance out the richness of the

buttermilk panna cotta.

Cheese is one of the courses

that can either make or break

the end of a dinner. Why not

pull out all the stops? The

2009 Winzergenossenschaft

Kallstadter Scheurebe Auslese

from Pfalz, Germany, will be

superb. The name of the wine

itself is a tongue twister, but

well worth the effort. The

grape in this gem is called

Scheurebe, which is a clone

between Riesling and Sylvaner,

invented in 1916 by German

viticulturist Georg Scheu. The

word “rebe” is the German

word for vine. There is plenty of

sweetness to satisfy the classic

blue-veined cheese pairing, and

plenty of wonderful acidity and

honeysuckle to identify with the

rich chèvre and sweet quince.

What a perfect way to finish

dinner.

‹‹CONTINUED

extinguished in a far shorter time,” he said.

While many yachts have a self-contained

breathing apparatus on board, a fire-specific

thermal imaging camera (TIC) has become a

valuable, military-tested addition to some yacht

firefighting arsenals. A TIC can detect hot spots,

including the location of people or fires in dark

and smoky spaces. While a flashlight is useless,

bouncing light off smoke particles, a TIC sees only

heat and will facilitate locating the fire and guests

needing rescue. It can also monitor success of the

firefight as the heat subsides. At the event, Bullard

discussed its Eclipse LD (large display) camera,

which can produce high-resolution images

in temperatures greater than 1,000 degrees

Fahrenheit.

But no equipment is effective unless the entire

crew is trained to locate and use it. AIG strongly

recommends fire-protection team training, such

as the fire and safety course offered by Fort

Lauderdale-based Resolve Maritime Academy.

Lessard also encouraged captains to conduct

realistic drills and to check fire alarm systems

regularly since breakdowns or wiring issues

could occur over time. And as yachts become

increasingly dependent on electronic devices

and services, the large amount of wiring hidden

between walls and the superstructure makes

the specific location of a problem harder to

locate. With a TIC, a crewmember can find the

fire’s hot spot, thus simplifying and shortening

the detection process, and quickly subdue what

otherwise might be an out-of-control fire.

While a TIC can detect warmth, even showing

where a person was—if they fled from a bed

or chair to another location, for instance—it

cannot see through glass or water, and it may

be deflected from stainless-steel glare. These

limitations suggest the importance of guest

instructions to stay clear of glass in an emergency.

Also, while thermal imaging cameras are often

touted to assist with “man overboard” situations,

they will not see someone totally submerged,

only the body parts above water.

The TIC is the yacht crew’s strongest asset in

locating a fire, as evidenced by its use on every

warship and sub in the U.S. Navy, said Bullard’s

Rob Healy. “We think that is a strong testimonial

to the tool’s value.”

Since onboard fires can be traced to a

variety of sources—from engine overheating,

welding, electrical wiring, overloaded circuitry,

a tipped iron, an overheated air conditioner or

accumulated dryer lint catching fire—another

recommendation for fire safety came from

Magney. His guest-welcome speech always

includes, “If anything seems out of place—if

it doesn’t smell right, taste right or feel

right—report it. If you are aware of and trust

your own senses, we have extra sets of alarm

systems on board.”
