The present school building,on Esselstyne Street, now an elementarybuilding, was constructed in 1942 when all thedistricts centralized.In 1967, voters in Cape Vincent and Clayton(15 miles to the northeast) voted to consolidatetheir two districts in order to providefacilities to increase educational opportunitiesto all local youth. In September of 1972, thenew Thousand Islands Central School, comprisedof a Middle and High School, openedon its site at Sand Bay, half way betweenCape Vincent and Clayton.In 1968, local residents inaugurated aFrench Festival Day. This day has becomean annual affair and is held on the secondSaturday in July near Bastille Day. FrenchFestival Day has grown each year, bringingthousands of visitors to Cape Vincent for thecelebration which consists of many Frenchbooths, exhibits, costumes, French pastries,a parade, band concerts and climaxes with afireworks display.The Community House located MarketStreet was the first framed house built in theearly 1800’s by the Borland family. Sincethen, the Cape Vincent Historical Museumhas relocated to one of Cape Vincent’s oldestbuildings. The stone structure locatedon North James Street was used as abarracks to house soldiers during the Warof 1812. Later on, the Forsythe Brothersmanufactured ironwork for sailing vesselsand cook stoves during its day as a foundryand machine shop. It has also served asa town barn. The Cape Vincent Chamberof Commerce has an office and a TouristInformation and Visitor’s Center in part ofthis historic stone building.Locally, there are many organizations withactive membership. These include ChurchSocieties, Parent-Teacher Organization,Lion’s Club, Knights of Columbus, Study clubs,Firemen, Fire Dept. Auxiliary, Ambulanceand Emergency Squad, American Legion,and American Legion Auxiliary, Chamberof Commerce, Improvement League, ArtsCouncil and numerous others. For those whobelong to a number of these organizations,the winter months particularly are filled withvarious activities.
