Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: This week we couldn’t pass up trying some of the new 

menus at Exit Zero Filling Station on Sunset Boulevard in West Cape 

May, right across the street from Sunset Liquors. 

The vibe: It was a Thursday, first day open for the week, and the dining 

room had a handful of tables filled with people craving their newest 

offer — $5 burgers all day every Thursday, more on that later. The 

fireplace was roaring, and a few barstools were occupied where Gordon 

was slinging some delicious cocktails. We couldn’t indulge in the drinks 

but we sure enjoyed the food. 

The food: The revamped menu is now available with the return of 

some old favorites like Pad Thai and Chicken and Waffles. What we 

went for was the $5 burger — complete with American cheese, lettuce 

and tomato. No substitutions allowed for this meal, but you can opt to 

add fries and a drink! The favorite we had however was the famous Hot 

Chick sandwich, now available in a wrap! It’s all the tasty goodness of 

the Hot Chick — tangy slaw, fried chicken, pepperjack cheese, spicy 

pickles and sriracha aioli — but tightly wrapped in a flour tortilla and 

served with fries. Jack also enjoyed a Wedgie — iceberg lettuce topped 

with crumbled blue cheese, onion, avocado, tomato, bacon, blue cheese 

dressing and a balsamic reduction. A classic salad like this never gets 

old, and you can add grilled chicken or salmon for a protein boost. 

The takeaway: Exit Zero Filling Station is open Thu-Sun from 

12-9pm for dine-in or takeout! If you’d like to enjoy an extra special 

night out, book one of the private dining trailers — Airstream, Chevy 

or Boombox. All off the regular menu but you’ll enjoy a private dining 

experience with your group, and get some great photos, too! Check out 

exitzero.com for more about making a reservation. Live music is back 

on Fridays and Saturdays from 4-8pm so be sure to arrive early to get 

a good seat. The dining room is first-come, first-served so keep that in 

mind when making your dinner plans.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

March 17 (St Patrick’s Day, to those 

of you deprived of Irish descent) 

is also the day our Osprey returns 

to New Jersey. There is no causeand-effect 

relationship that I am 

aware. It’s just that the Osprey timetable and 

the wearing of the green coincide. 

A common summer resident, way back 

in November, the last of North America’s 

Osprey trickled past the hawk watch at Cape 

May Point State Park. Their destination was 

the Amazon Basin where summer sun is a 

365 day per year fact of life. But now with their 

hormones raging, it’s time for adults to begin 

a new breeding season. Last year’s young 

will sit this year out, electing to remain in the 

tropics. Why risk a perilous journey if you are 

not going to breed? 

But with menhaden returning to Delaware 

Bay, Osprey are reestablishing territories and 

in the days ahead rekindling pair bonds with 

birds engaging in high circling and spirited 

aerial displays that demonstrate their breeding 

fitness. The courtship is sealed with a fish. 

Chesapeake Bay hosts the continent’s 

greatest concentration of breeding Osprey 

but Delaware Bay is not far behind and frankly 

the two watersheds might be considered one 

as far as Osprey are concerned. Soaring aloft 

on the super-heated air of mid-summer, it’s 

certain an Osprey soaring over the Maurice 

River is seeing the glint of sunlight shining on 

the Chesapeake. 

An Osprey that high is not fishing. For 

fishing birds cruise along under 200 feet, 

then descend to 60 feet when prey is sighted, 

they plunge. Targeting prey swimming within 

three feet of the surface, the birds sometimes 

submerge their entire bodies to secure prey. 

Fish catching machines, the feet of Osprey 

have a swiveling outer toe that allows them to 

present prey with a four cornered net of talons. 

The pads of an Osprey’s feet are embedded 

with tiny spicules designed for grasping 

slippery prey. And birds rising after a 

plunge, fish in tow trail a string of silver water 

droplets as they climb. And climb they must 

because if successful, it is almost certain that 

one or more Bald Eagles will be in pursuit. 

The brigands almost always succeed in forcing 

the Osprey to drop its catch. Eagles with 

young already in the nest by April, call this 

business as usual. The volume of eagles and 

Osprey breeding locally attest to the health of 

our aquatic ecosystem — indeed most Osprey 

along the Maurice River manage to fledge 

three to four young per nesting cycle; eagles 

two to three.

Are you ready for this review? I don’t 

think so. There are two included in 

this week’s column. I have never 

been a big fan of the sand saga, Dune. 

I’ve said it before — I go for episodic 

over epic every time. Dune seemed so drawn 

out. But my wife is a big fan of the books, so 

off we go to see the second installment in 

what I’m guessing will be a trilogy. 

Just for kicks we picked the 4Dx theater to 

see it. I mean, what’s the big deal, right? Isn’t 

it a little like an amusement park ride? They 

mist you. The chair vibrates. Little puffs of 

air poof you… I went to one of these theaters 

maybe 15 years ago. How much has changed? 

Twenty-five bucks a ticket? Wow, that seems 

extreme. Still, I’m committed to going now 

— let’s do it. 

Oh… my… word! Stop this ride, I want 

to get off! There was a trailer for a sequel to 

Twister, and I was practically thrown out of my 

seat. The chair vibrates, sure, but it also swirls 

around like a roller coaster. Enough. 

But after I settled in, I wouldn’t have been

as interested in the movie if I wasn’t being 

tossed around the whole time. Fights or sandworms 

— or even just looking over the horizon 

is more interesting when your chair is moving 

with you (especially as you rise above a hill 

to look out into the distance). Very, very cool! 

The movie? Oh come on, you know it. 

Sandworms and sand dunes, and oh I don’t 

know… sand all over the place. Sand people 

fighting in the sand. I mean… you get it, right? 

OK, OK, my wife let me know that this version 

of the movie is much closer to the book series. 

I guess that’s why it’s so epic. And you know 

how I feel about epic. 

In other news, Emma Stone won the 

Oscar for best leading actress for her work 

in Poor Things this year. You are not ready for 

this movie. It’s as artsy as it is allegory — 

Frankenstein meets 9 1/2 Weeks. I don’t know 

how else to explain it. But be ready for it. 

There is lots of sex and glorious cinematography. 

The art direction is otherworldly for sure. 

Enjoy… if you dare. 

And one more dope “indie film defeats 

Hollywood glitz machine” update from Oscar. 

My fave, Godzilla Minus One beat out Tom 

Cruise and Mission Impossible 7 for best visual 

effects. I think it should have won for best 

story, too. I don’t care if you’re “not into 

Godzilla,” see this movie ( you still need to 

catch it in theaters)!

My memories of Easter include 

tulips and light coats, but the 

most common date for Easter 

is March 31, so I probably wore 

winter boots as often as white 

patent shoes to church. Easter can fall as early 

as March 22, but the last time it did, James 

Monroe was president, and it won’t be that 

early again until 2285. Let’s hope our many 

times great grandchildren have warm coats. 

For most Christians, Easter falls on the 

first Sunday after the first full moon that falls 

on or after the vernal equinox, unless that 

day is a Sunday. This means Easter can fall 

between March 22 and April 25. Simple, right? 

This was agreed upon at the Council of Nicaea 

in 325. Orthodox Christian churches use the 

Julian calendar, so they usually celebrate a 

little later. Over the centuries, there have been 

efforts to set Easter on a fixed Sunday, or at 

least to agree on one date for the celebration. 

Leaders of the world’s major Christian 

denominations have wanted to establish a 

common date as a symbol of reconciliation 

among the churches, and to have it settled by 

the 1700th anniversary of the Nicaean Council 

in 2025. No announcement has been made, 

and many think church leaders should be 

focusing on more important issues. 

Christians are accustomed to differences 

in Easter’s celebration, after all. Some 

Christians mark Holy Thursday with acts of 

humility, like washing the feet of strangers, 

while others choose acts of service, like work- 

ing in a food bank. In Switzerland, there’s no 

Easter Bunny, the cuckoo brings Easter eggs. 

In Germany, it’s a fox. There is also tolerance 

for change — Lent was once a more arduous 

period on the religious calendar, requiring 

abstinence from meat, eggs, dairy, sport 

and sex for the entire six-week period from 

Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. Giving up 

chocolate is much easier. 

If you’re celebrating Easter in Cape May, 

join the Easter Egg Hunt on Convention Hall 

Beach, March 30 from 11am-2pm for children 

aged 10 and under. No rain date. The Easter 

Fashion Stroll starts at Rotary Park, Sunday, 

March 31. Registration begins at noon, and 

the stroll at 1pm. Treat yourself to an Easter 

meal — Harry’s hosts an Easter brunch and 

egg hunt on March 30. Easter EggstravanZOO 

at the Cape May Zoo will entertain the kids 

who are off school from Friday, March 29 

through April 7. Enjoy a scavenger hunt, a 

game of “ISpy” and a “Hopstacle” course.

sister. Is he kidding? I did not say anything 

but I’m pretty offended. I work with him in a 

medical facility and don’t want to make things

Why are you so accommodating? This 

must stop. And shouldn’t these matters be 

resolved by the boss or supervisor, especially 

given it is a “medical facility.” Stop enabling.
