Madison County
Resident
Farm Science Review
still on for this year
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The show will go on.
So reports Nick Zachrich, manager of the
Farm Science Review, the annual agricultural
trade show and education event that
attracts more than 100,000 visitors to Ohio
State University’s (OSU) Molly Caren Agricultural
Center in London.
The Farm Science Review grounds suffered
damages in the tornado/storm event
that passed through Madison County on
Feb. 28. The electrical infrastructure and
several buildings were impacted.
“All of the electrical infrastructure is privately
owned by the university. We will be
repairing it over the next few months,”
Zachrich said.
The grounds are home to a mix of buildings
owned by OSU and by private entities.
Of the buildings struck by the tornado, most
incurred minor or cosmetic damages,
Zachrich said. A handful were damaged
badly enough they will need to be demolished.
“A lot of our partners were affected.
Most have been to the site to review their
assets and any damage,” he said.
Despite the repair work that needs to be
done, the 2024 Farm Science Review will
take place as scheduled Sept. 17-19.
“We have no concerns about holding the
event. There will be minor impacts of certain
exhibitors being in different locations
than usual. Otherwise, it will be business as
usual for us,” Zachrich said.
He noted that the companies that have
private-owned building on-site are having
their buildings reviewed by engineers for
structural integrity.
“So, everyone coming to the show can be
assured all of the structures will be as safe
as they have been in the past,” he said.
Zachrich noted that the site’s farming operations
and field demonstration areas were
unaffected by the storm.
He also noted that other events slated to
take place on the grounds this summer will
indeed take place.
“At first, we were unsure, but we have
reached out to all of those event organizers
City to install ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
London city council recently passed legislation
to start the process of installing 340
sidewalk ramps that are compliant with the
Americans with Disabilities Act. The project
will cover every corner in the city that requires
a ramp.
The legislation, passed unanimously on
March 7, allows Rex Castle, London’s
safety-service director, to advertise for bids
and enter into contract for the project. The
work must be completed by the end of 2024.
Making the project possible is a $204,000
grant from the Ohio Department of Developmental
Disabilities. The grant will cover
the entire cost of the project, with no out-ofpocket
money from the city. The Madison
County Board of Developmental Disabilities
is administering the grant.
“Access has always been on the forefront
of this administration. This is another example
of working with different entities to
make London more accessible for all people,”
said Mayor Patrick Closser.
Madison County was one of 67 counties
in Ohio that received funding earlier this
year to make improvements that support individuals
with developmental disabilities
and their families. A total of $14.9 million
in American Rescue Plan Act money was
distributed across the state.
Other approved legislation
• Early in the year each year, council approves
legal fund transfers as part of the
previous year’s budget resolution. Council
approved this year’s transfers at the March
7 meeting. Among them was $200,000 to
help cover fire department operations.
• Council approved legislation to set
aside $25,000 for this year’s fireworks display
which will take place on July 3. This
marks an increase of $5,000 over last year’s
allocation for fireworks.
• Council authorized the Board of Public
Utilities to advertise for bids and enter into
a contract to lease the approximately 160
acres of farmland it owns adjacent to the
city sanitation department at the end of
Jenkinson Avenue.
• In a 6-1 vote with Brent McDaniels
casting the “no” vote, council approved setting
aside $45,000 to cover the cost of finish
work on the lot on Walnut Street where the
old community center was located. The work
will include applying fill dirt, grading, and
seeding the lot.
• Council approved a measure that allows
the mayor or safety-service director to
apply for grants without seeking council approval
to do so. This allows for speedy response
to short grant deadlines. The
administration still needs to seek council’s
approval to accept any grants they are
awarded.
Miscellaneous
• Council member Michael Norman is
hosting a community meeting at 7 p.m.
March 27 at town hall, 20 S. Walnut St. The
meeting is informal and open to anyone who
wants to talk about any topic pertaining to
the city.
• Council member Shannon Treynor said
she has started conversations with Jennifer
Hitt, the city’s law director, about the possibility
of instituting a municipal transient
occupancy tax, also known as a hotel tax.
She said it could be a new source of revenue
for the city.
Mt. Sterling Museum back open for the season
After its usual closure in January and
February, the Mount Sterling Community
Museum is back open for the season. The
museum is located in the lower level of
Mount Sterling Public Library, 60 W.
Columbus St.
The current display features photos and
information on the history and growth of
Mount Sterling from 1845 to 2000. The display
is divided into three parts: 1845-1899,
1900-1949, and 1950-2000. The photos show
citizens, businesses, schools, government,
and more. The display will be up until at
least April 30.
The museum is packed with a wide array
of historical artifacts and information. One
of the museum’s most recent acquisitions is
the executive desk Governor John Bricker
used while he was governor of Ohio from
1939 to 1945.
Bricker graduated from Mount Sterling
High School in 1911. He then earned a law
degree at The Ohio State University. After
practicing law for many years, he served as
Ohio’s attorney general from 1933 to 1939.
Bricker was a Republican candidate for
president in 1944. At the national convention,
Thomas Dewey of New York was chosen
as the presidential candidate, and
Bricker accepted the vice presidential candidate
position. They lost the election to
Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
“The desk is quite impressive,” said Steve
Chambers, Mount Sterling Community Museum
director.
The museum acquired the desk in August
of last year. For many years, it had
been in the Galloway home of John and
Julia Bricker. John is Bricker’s grandson.
The couple moved to a smaller home last fall
and felt the best place for the desk was the
museum, Chamber said.
Museum hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday. Special hours
can be accommodated on request. Call (740)
Tolles using grant for electrical and HVAC programs
Tolles Career and Technical Center was among 56 Ohio schools
to be awarded a state-funded Career Technical Education Equipment
Grant earlier this month.
The $530,000 grant allows Tolles to purchase new robotics and
construction-related equipment to ensure its students get first-hand
experience with the latest technology.
“New technologies are transforming the economy, and to prepare
students for those careers, we need to invest in the machinery, technologies,
and training that educators need,” said Ohio Lt. Governor
Jon Husted when announcing the grant recipients with Gov. Mike
DeWine on March 4.
“Helping students graduate career-ready, equipped with the
high-demand skills local businesses are seeking — and paying topdollar
to get — has been a hallmark of Tolles since its inception almost
50 years ago,” said Tolles Superintendent Dr. Todd Hoadley.
“These funds will benefit our students by providing top-notch equipment
for them to work with and set them up for future success.”
Hoadley said $450,000 of the grant funds will be allocated evenly
between the school’s construction/electrical program and construction/HVAC
program to purchase new equipment.
The remaining $80,000 will be used to purchase VEX robotics
equipment to be distributed across Tolles’ career awareness satellite
programs which currently reside in the rural associate districts of
Madison-Plains, London, West Jefferson, Jonathan “Investing in our schools is an investment into our
Alder and Fairbanks Local.
students’ futures,” DeWine said of the grant program
“This funding allows us to welcome even more students
who are eager to dive into the electrical and budget. “Allowing more schools to purchase equipment
which was included in the 2024-25 state operating
HVAC fields,” Hoadley said. “It’s definitely a gamechanger
for us at Tolles and the future of career techni-
state up for success.”
so they can train more students will set them and our
cal training.”
Hoops for a Cure raises $2,100
The Madison-Plains High School girls’ basketball program held their 2nd Annual Hoops for a Cure to raise
breast cancer awareness. The event took place during the Eagles’ game against Greeneview and included
a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Representatives of the team recently presented a donation of $2,100 to
the Madison Health Foundation’s Mona Flax Breast Cancer Endowment Fund: Coach Hope Fetherolf,
Cheyenne Pearce, Fenja Berner, Kenzie Vallery, Sadie Mason, Aniston Cordell, Lyla Coil, Coach Aaron Stewart,
Mackenzie Reeves, Cressa Williams, Claire Mason, Carly Kelly, Ariel Stout, and Ginger Kronk, vice president
of development at Madison Health. The fund provides assistance to women in the community for the
detection and treatment of breast cancer. Through generous donors, the fund currently provides screening
mammograms at no out-of-pocket cost.

Pre-planning final wishes
is a healing gift to family
Losing a loved one is a crushing experience.
It knocks the wind out of you so much
it’s hard to think. It’s ironic that when we are
grief stricken and overwhelmed, we must
make some of the most difficult decisions like
how to honor our loved one, one final time.
Writing an obituary, planning a service,
and choosing a monument can seem unwieldy
PAID ADVERTISING
Service aids
with process
of grieving
Should I have a funeral? A memorial service?
A celebration of life? While holding a formal
service may seem like an outdated ritual
to many, it can hold many benefits for friends,
family, and others left to mourn a loss.
Dr. Alan Wolfelt, a renowned author and
expert on grief, identifies six benefits a service
can offer to those who are mourning:
• acknowledgement of the reality of death;
• encouraging grief expression;
• offering testimony to honor the life of the
deceased;
• allowing for faith expression;
• providing support to those grieving;
• offering hope.
Each grief journey is unique, and while
everyone will start and progress at their own
pace, often times the start of the mourning
process can be the most difficult part. Having
a set time together to remember a loved one
lost, gather support from family, friends, and
the community, and being able to express your
emotions in a safe space can all aid in starting
your grief journey off on the right foot.
Keeping in mind that not every service is
religious, remembrance and honoring a life
can take many different forms. Whether this
is a traditional casketed service, a memorial
service for cremation, or even a celebration
of life, having that designated time can do
wonders in helping heal from a loss. What
that service looks like is entirely up to you
and your family and what seems right to
honor your loved one.
While losing a loved one is never easy,
having this experience can act as a rite of passage
prescribing a start to healing and transforming
our relationship with our lost loved
one into one full of hope for the future.
in those moments. What if you never discussed
those things? What if you are not sure
what they’d like, or your family members disagree?
What if the costs are not within your
budget? These challenges could be eliminated
by preplanning.
According to the National Funeral Directors
Association, the median cost of a traditional
funeral today is $7,640, before
cemetery and headstone costs. Inclusive of
them, it can be a $10,000 investment or more.
Making final plans is a wonderful gift to a
family. It not only protects loved ones from
unplanned expenses, it takes the guesswork
and stress out of making important decisions
during an emotional time. Today, it is possible
to plan, design, and pay for everything up
front from the service, burial, and headstone.
In fact, companies like Modlich Monument
Company can produce a headstone in advance,
adding final touches at the passing of
a loved one.
Pre-planning gives the family time to research
options, talk and include personal details
that adds a special touch. Pre-planning
also locks in the cost and removes the financial
burden from survivors, a gift they will
truly appreciate.
Consider part-time work
As enticing as unending free time may
seem, some retirees find it difficult to be entirely
free from the responsibility of working.
Inflation can drive up the costs of living,
meaning that seniors who were once able to
afford a certain retirement lifestyle may no
longer enjoy that hard-earned luxury. Others
may miss the daily opportunities to socialize
that working provides or the way problemsolving
on the job stimulates the brain. But
even retirees who miss working may not be
ready to return to the workforce full-time.
Part-time jobs can be an ideal fit for mature
workers. Here’s a look at some part-time positions
that could be a good fit for older adults.
Retail sales associate
Working in retail opens seniors up to an
array of responsibilities and scenarios. Jobs
may include greeting customers, making
sales, putting out inventory, and helping customers
select merchandise. Many stores offer
part-time employees flexible hours.
Customer service representative
A customer service representative is tasked
with helping customers solve problems and
ensuring customer satisfaction. He or she may
work in a traditional office or store location,
or answer calls and resolve issues from home.
School positions
Retirees may want to consider jobs working
in schools or in related capacities. Driving a
school bus is an option if people are willing to
undergo the proper training and licensing to operate
this type of vehicle. Seniors also may consider
working as lunchroom aides or lunch
service providers, crossing guards, substitute
teachers, and paraprofessionals. School employees
will only work a few hours during the
day. They’ll also enjoy many holidays off, as
well as summer vacations.
Hobbies beneficial
to health, wellness
The value of hobbies is undeniable. A study published in the Journal
of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees
who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative
on work projects and had a better attitude on the job, while a separate
study published in Psychosomatic Medicine reported that individuals
who engaged in enjoyable leisure activities had lower blood pressure
and a smaller waist circumference.
The myriad benefits of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of
whom have more time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired
or still working but free from the responsibilities of parenting, the following
are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.
• Cooking: Years spent hustling and bustling through the daily
grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals
to embrace cooking that emphasized convenience over culinary
skill. Now that there is more time to embrace one’s inner chef,
seniors can look to cooking classes or take the self-taught route and
purchase a new cookbook filled with delicious recipes. A well-cooked,
homemade meal can provide a sense of accomplishment and affords
seniors an opportunity to control the ingredients in the foods they eat,
which can be important for individuals with health-related dietary restrictions.
• Writing: Many successful individuals have penned their memoirs
after long, notable careers and lives. While individuals need not follow
suit with the goal of making their memoirs public, writing can be a
great way for seniors to document their lives and the lives of their families.
Interest in genealogy has risen considerably in recent years, as
easily accessible websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have
made it easier than ever for individuals to learn where they came from.
Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites
by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they
know about the lives of their parents, siblings, grandparents, and other
family members.
• Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the
great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards. Gardening
can benefit the body in many ways. According to the Mayo
Clinic Health System, gardening can burn as many calories as working
out in the gym. In addition, individuals who grow their own fruits and
vegetables are more likely to include those foods in their own diets,
saving them money at the grocery store and increasing their intake of
nutrient-rich foods.
Jeffersonian Senior Citizens will meet March 26 for special bingo event
The Jeffersonian Senior Citizen Center, 174 E. Main
St., West Jefferson, usually meets from noon to 2 p.m. the
first and third Tuesdays of each month. This month is an
exception; the center will meet on March 26 for a meeting
white elephant bingo. The center will return to its usual
schedule next month.

Women’s History - Honoring
The Past and Casting Forward
Dear Neighbor,
As we celebrate Women's History Month, it's imperative
that we not only reflect on the incredible
accomplishments of women throughout history
but also take concrete steps to ensure that
progress continues. We stand on the shoulders of
trailblazers who fought tirelessly for women’s
rights. Our duty as a community is to honor their
legacy by actively supporting and uplifting
women today.
Reflecting on the past year, I am proud to have
sponsored legislation like SB 93 and co-sponsored
HB 35, which directly address pressing issues
facing women in our society. These
initiatives represent crucial steps toward improving
maternal health and seeking justice for survivors
of sexual abuse. However, our work is far
from over.
To truly advance the cause of women's rights, we
must remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts.
It's not enough to simply acknowledge the
achievements of women; we must actively work
to dismantle the barriers that still exist. This
means advocating for policies that promote gender
equality, providing support and resources for
women in all aspects of their lives, and fostering
a culture that values and respects the contributions
of women.
As leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example
and create opportunities for women to
thrive. By championing the advancement of
women, we not only honor the legacy of those
who came before us and ensure a brighter future
for generations to come.
But supporting women isn't just the responsibility
of those in positions of power – it's something
everyone can do. Whether through simple acts of
encouragement, advocating for equal opportunities,
or challenging stereotypes and biases, we
all have a role in creating a more equitable
society.
So let us use Women's History Month as a catalyst
for change – a reminder of our progress and the
work that still lies ahead. Together, we can build
a legacy of support and empowerment for
women that will be remembered for generations.
Results matter, so let’s work together. Subscribe
