MARCH 23, 2024 | <strong>DIS</strong>COVER! 10 | Other Happenings Nature Center hosts day of fun on March 29 Kiddos have no school? No worries. The Dickinson County Nature Center has you covered. They will be hosting a No School Camp Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, March 29, for kids in grades fifth-eighth. The theme will be Nature’s Makers, where youth will make a difference in nature. Not only will kids get to make a difference in nature, but they will also get to make some fun projects and develop valuable skills to take home. Some projects include creating prairie seed bombs to launch into the prairie, making a DIY natural chapstick for the summer season, learning fire-building skills, and more. Youth will also assist with a public service project within Kenue Park to further conservation efforts. The cost of the camp is $15, and registration can be found under the Programs/Events page at www.dickinsoncountynaturecenter.com. Registration closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 27. For a day of fun and learning, make sure to sign up the kids for No School Camp Day at the Dickinson County Nature Center. From Plate to Palette is a series of classes that will offer kids a chance to cook dishes and study artists from other cultures. The class is aimed at kids ages 7-12. The first class took kids on a trip Down Under to Australia, and they’ve been traveling all over the world since. This class will be focused on the great country of Ireland. The classes will be led by Cathie Critchett who cooks at the Monarch Art Cafe and works with local favorite Chef Susanne Bicknese. When she was coming up with the format for this class, Critchett knew way for the kids to learn about these cultures,” Critchett said. “For each class, we will get our hands on knowledge of the food of a culture by making a dish from that country and then we will study the work of an artist from that culture.” This month will focus on the work of Jack Butler Yeats and the students will be learning to make shepherd’s pies. “I chose Ireland because it is perfect for the month of March. The kids will be making individual Irish shepherd’s pies, and we will create art based on Jack Butler Yeats work,” Critchett said. You couldn’t offer a taste of Ireland After the pies get into the oven, the kids can turn their attention to painting. “We will be painting on canvas boards as Yeats was known mostly for his landscape paintings based on his childhood memories of growing up in Ireland,” Critchett said. Even though the landscape might not be as vibrant as we wish for a painting, Critchett says not to worry. She will be having the kids do just what Yeats did — use his memories. “Yeats used his memory to paint. He has been quoted saying, ‘No one creates — the artist assembles memories.’ He painted landscapes from his memory,” Critchett said.
