Side Trip:
How was your spring break?
When I was in college all those
many years ago, my spring breaks
were focused on picking up extra hours at
my part-time job until my senior year when
I made a daring trip
by Greyhound bus
to Detroit to visit my
sister and tour two
large-scale printing
operations as part of
my credits toward independent
study that
I needed for graduation.
While I thought I
booked a nonstop
route, I ended up on a
bus that took the side
roads, not four-lanes.
It took eight hours longer to make the journey
than expected, and since there were no
cellphones at that time, my poor sister had
to make a few calls from her end to learn
my whereabouts when I didn’t get off the
bus she expected.
Oh, how things have changed! Does anyone
still take the bus?
Spring break is now road trips to Florida
with more people crammed in one car than
could possibly be comfortable, flights and
weeklong stays at all-inclusive resorts in the
Caribbean and even visits to France, Spain
and Italy.
But spring has been deceiving this year,
with such a short ice season on our lakes,
and local weather high temps in March
coming in warmer than those in snowbird
locations like Arizona and Texas.
Even so, given the opportunity, I don’t
think spring break in Iowa will ever be able
to top the allure of visiting someplace new,
and even if the temps aren’t typical, precipitation
when it comes will not be in a form
that needs to be scooped.
Here’s to March in Iowa.
SCHOOL’S
IN SESSION
Dickinson County All School Show draws
crowds to see artwork of K-12 students
One of the most well-attended
and longest-running exhibits
is on display once again at
the Pearson Lakes Art Center in
Okoboji.
The Dickinson County All School
Show annually showcases more
than 300 works of art by K-12 students
from the Graettinger-Terril,
Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji and
Spirit Lake school districts.
The show is up through April 13
and is one that visual arts director
Danielle Clouse Gast says the art
center truly enjoys hosting each year.
“It’s something the art center truly
looks forward to putting on each
year,” Clouse Gast said.
“It’s always fresh because
there are always
new things happening
in these classrooms. It’s
truly a show that spotlights
what’s happening
in our art classrooms
with our art teachers
and their students.”
She notes that those
teachers probably have
the most difficult job as
it pertains to the show.
“They might have
80 students in kindergarten
through second
grade and can only select
20, so to be selected
for this show is a big
deal and fun for those
kids to see their work
on the walls,” Clouse
Gast said. “Another
piece to this is that we
There is a lot of great art happening
in the schools, so I can’t
imagine how hard it is for those
teachers to pick these pieces.”
Visitors will see pieces made
from all kinds of mediums
including watercolor and oil
paintings, ceramics with a variety
of glazing techniques and much,
much more.
It’s another highlight on the
opportunities the students have to
try all kinds of artistic avenues in
school.
In addition to seeing all the fun
and unique projects students have
created, Clouse Gast said the art
center looks forward to a month full
of high traffic at the art center.
“It’s a fun month for the art center
because the sound level in the
building goes up with all the people
in here and we have so many visiting
for the first time,” Clouse Gast
said. “It’s a great introduction for
those families to see the art happening
throughout Dickinson County
as well as everything we have going
on here at the art center.” F
OUT!
This Weekend!
The
SEARCH
is on
Make your way through Sheldon
next week and you’ll
likely see folks out and
about.
They won’t just be out for a spring
stroll either, they’ll be searching high
and low for a shiny prize.
The community’s annual Golden
Egg Hunt is set for March 22-29 with
a prize of up to $500 in Sheldon dollars
on the line.
“This is the 31st annual Golden
Egg Hunt, and it’s actually the
longest-running event Sheldon has
had,” said Shanelle Matus, interim
director of the Sheldon Chamber
and Development Corporation.
The fun begins at 10 a.m. Friday,
March 22 when the first clue is released
at participating businesses.
Those seeking the egg will have the
weekend to find it based on the
first clue and will receive the $500
prize.
If the egg remains at large another
clue will be released at 10 a.m.
through March 29 and the prize
package will drop by $25 each day
the egg remains hidden with $350
being the minimum prize amount.
Matus says it’s always a fun challenge
and great way to get people out
and about in the community.
“The clues aren’t on social media
or anything, just posted at participating
businesses to create foot traffic to
those places, and it’s just a great way
to get out and be active,” Matus said.
“It’s like a big scavenger hunt and
fun challenges that makes you really
put on your thinking cap.”
The clues might start out fairly
vague and building in specificity
over the course of the week.
Sometimes the search doesn’t end
with finding the actual physical egg.
28.
From Plate to Palette is a series of
classes that will offer kids a chance
to cook dishes and study artists from
other cultures. The class is aimed at
kids ages 7-12.
The first class took kids on a
trip Down Under to Australia, and
they’ve been traveling all over the
world since. This class will be focused
on the great country of Ireland.
The classes will be led by Cathie
Critchett who cooks at the Monarch
Art Cafe and works with local favorite
Chef Susanne Bicknese.
When she was coming up with the
format for this class, Critchett knew
way for the kids to learn about
these cultures,” Critchett said. “For
each class, we will get our hands on
knowledge of the food of a culture by
making a dish from that country and
then we will study the work of an artist
from that culture.”
This month will focus on the work
of Jack Butler Yeats and the students
will be learning to make shepherd’s
pies.
“I chose Ireland because it is perfect
for the month of March. The
kids will be making individual Irish
shepherd’s pies, and we will create
art based on Jack Butler Yeats work,”
Critchett said.
You couldn’t offer a taste of Ireland
After the pies get into the oven, the
kids can turn their attention to painting.
“We will be painting on canvas
boards as Yeats was known mostly
for his landscape paintings based on
his childhood memories of growing
up in Ireland,” Critchett said.
Even though the landscape might
not be as vibrant as we wish for a
painting, Critchett says not to worry.
She will be having the kids do just
what Yeats did — use his memories.
“Yeats used his memory to paint.
He has been quoted saying, ‘No
one creates — the artist assembles
memories.’ He painted landscapes
from his memory,” Critchett said.
