ERUPTIONS
Volcanic eruptions are some of
the most violent and dangerous
4 natural forces, but they are also
5
quite beautiful to see. They occur
when magma and other materials
are pushed up to Earth’s surface
from far below. Eruptions are
unpredictable and can range
from gentle to extremely intense
depending on a variety of factors.
HOW DOES AN ERUPTION
OCCUR?
While each eruption is unique, they
do follow certain steps:
1) Earthquake swarm
There are almost always warning signs
that an eruption is coming. These
initial signals include earthquakes. An
earthquake indicates that a volcano is
getting ready to erupt and magma is
about to come to the surface!
2) The eruption itself
An eruption can take the form of a
relatively calm lava flow, or it may be
a violent explosion, accompanied by
clouds of dust, ash, steam and lapilli,
or little lava stones. It can even
involve pyroclastic flow, a dangerous
cloud of hot gas.
3) Emanation
The volcano’s eruption is
finished. Now the volcano is
emitting gas and hot steam and
quieting down—until it is ready
to erupt again.
