<strong>Kerry</strong> <strong>Andrew</strong> is the winner of four British Composer Awards and the author of two novels, Swansong and<br />

SKIN. They specialise in experimental vocal and <strong>choral</strong> music, music-theatre and community music, create altfolk<br />

as You Are Wolf and co-founded the award-winning Juice Vocal Ensemble.<br />

<strong>Kerry</strong> has written for BBC Ten Pieces, the London Sinfonietta, Art on the Underground, the National Theatre,<br />

the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, Mahogany Opera and Tete a Tete Opera; their work has been<br />

premiered at Wigmore Hall, Sydney Opera House, the Southbank Centre and the BBC Proms at the Royal<br />

Composer’s note<br />

An earlier version of this piece was commissioned in 2004 by The Cavendish Singers to be<br />

performed after the First Lesson in the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Westminster<br />

Cathedral. I chose to create a lullaby from the perspectives of two individuals—Mary, mother of<br />

Christ, and Adam, representing the sins of Man—and sourced three separate early English texts<br />

set at the cradle of the baby Jesus. The first lullaby is the earliest known example of the ‘lullay’<br />

song, which appears in several versions in the 14th and 15th centuries and is exceptional in that<br />

it is the song of a human mother; the second lullaby is addressed to Christ by a penitent; and in<br />

the third I envisage Adam, or Man, as the observer.<br />

Anglo-Saxon metrical charms were sets of instructions that were meant to cure sickness<br />

or resolve troubles. They tended to include ingredients for potions, and were intended<br />

to be spoken aloud, with certain phrases to be repeated several times. Twelve such<br />

charms survive in Old English, including this one for water-elf disease, which involves<br />

watery eyes and pale, ill-looking nails.<br />

Here, the composer has adapted the Old English into her own modern text, with<br />

two exceptions:<br />

1) ‘sing þis gealdor ofer þriwa’ (sing this charm three times) is retained, shown as it is<br />

to be pronounced: ‘sing this gal-dor of-er thrir-wah’<br />

for online perusal only<br />

2) the ingredients for the ‘herb box whispers’ sections at the beginning and end. At<br />

the conductor’s discretion, each singer should choose 1–3 herbs from the list below<br />

and whisper them clearly, in their own time, with pauses in between. This may also<br />

be accompanied by optional movements, such as dropping a herb into a bowl each<br />

time a word is spoken.<br />
