They ran, they danced, they glowed in
the dark! And they raised $30,316!
The scene was Norwood Elementary’s
Neon Run, a first-time fundraiser put on
by the West Jefferson Parent-Teacher Organization
(PTO) on May 19. Through the
course of the day, each grade level, from
preschool through fifth grade, got 40 minutes
of fun under black lights in the gym.
A live DJ, refreshments, and glow-in-thedark
hopscotch and tic-tac-toe were all
part of the festivities.
In previous years, the spring
fundraiser was a flower sale. For the Neon
Run, students didn’t sell anything. They
simply collected flat donations ahead of
time.
“The run was a way to maximize our
fundraising, and, by holding it during the
school day, we could engage all students,
whether they raised money or not,” said
Kaylea Annen, PTO president.
The PTO’s initial goal was $15,000. In
the end, students raised more than twice
the goal amount. They earned individual
and group rewards along the way.
“Our top fundraisers from each grade
earned a ride to lunch with the principal
in a neon pink limo,” Annen said.
Every student who raised at least $50
was entered into a drawing for a Nintendo
Switch. The top earning grade level won a
popsicle recess party.
Incentives to benefit all students were
assigned to various overall fundraising
Seeking nominees
for Hall of Fame
The London Academic Boosters is seeking
nominations for individuals to be considered
for induction into the London Academic
Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Academic
Hall of Fame is to recognize individuals who
have made an important, positive impact
upon the school, local community, or global
community. The individual must have attended
a school in the London City School
District, been employed by the school district,
worked as a volunteer in the school
district, or in some other direct way made a
significant contribution to the academic success
of the schools in the district or other educational
institutions.
Nominations for the Academic Hall of
Fame may be made by anyone connected to
the London community. Nomination applications
are available at the London High
School office and at London Public Library.
Applications must be turned in to the London
High School principal’s office by May 1.
benchmarks. At $10,000, the student body
earned inflatables to enjoy on field day the
last week of school. At $15,000, they earned
an assembly by Professor Wow who will
bring his science show to the school in May.
When the fundraising soared past the
original goal, the PTO created a stretch
goal: a makeover of the leadership lounge if
fundraising topped $25,000.
Last year, the school turned an unused
classroom into a place where students could
meet up with high school student mentors
to play ping pong, foosball, and cornhole, as
well as put together puzzles, play word
games, play Legos, and brainstorm conversation
topics, among other activities. Teachers
also book the room for special events and
incentives.
www.madisonmessengernews.com
“It’s a flex space for everyone in the
building. It needs some TLC and elevation,”
Annen said.
As for the $30,316 raised through the
Neon Run, Annen said, “We can do a lot for
students, the school, and staff with that
amount of money.”
The PTO sponsors field trips, guest
speakers, classroom celebrations, and community
events like the Gingerbread Jubilee
in the fall and Popsicles with the Principal
in the summer. They stock the school’s care
closet, provide students and staff with backto-school
gifts, and provide refreshments for
preschool graduation, DARE graduation,
and the art show. The list goes on.
“We support Norwood’s day-to-day activities,
offsetting costs for students, teachers,
and staff,” Annen said.
OhioHealth partners with Tolles and Southwestern
Opportunities
for students in
medical field
OhioHealth recently announced a new
working relationship with South-Western
City Schools in Grove City and Tolles Career
and Technical Center in Plain City to
find the next generation of young talent.
With the new collaboration, OhioHealth
will work directly with both organizations
through a work-based learning program,
creating formal critical-roles pathways for
high school students. The goal is to prepare
students for roles in nursing, pharmacy, patient
services, medical assisting, and more.
carnival and have a fun, family-friendly
night together where everything is free, and
also get some information they can take
home with them about services they might
need in the future,” said Julie Harris, Madison
County Protective Services administrator.
The first Child Abuse Prevention Carnival
was held in 2013. The event averages
500 attendees each year.
This year during Child Abuse Prevention
Month, Madison County Protective Services
is emphasizing the need for more people to
report instances of child abuse or neglect.
Certain members of the community, including
teachers, doctors, social workers, and
law enforcement personnel, are required to
report such instances. Individuals in the
community can do the same.
Last year, 431 individuals in the community
called Protective Services to report
child abuse or neglect. In some cases, the individuals
witnessed or suspected the abuse
or neglect. In others, a child told the individual
something had happened to them.
“It takes a village,” Harris said. “We really
appreciate those who call in the reports
so we can get out there to help the child or
help the families with resources that can
help them thrive.”
To make a report, an individual can call
(740) 852-4770 and ask for Children’s Services
or make the report in person at 200
Midway St., London. The department has
someone available to take reports Monday
through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. After hours
and on weekends, individuals can call the
Sheriff’s Office at (740) 852-1212 ; the office
will relay the call to Children’s Services.
Those who make a report can ask to be
anonymous. The department does not share
the names of people who make reports.
part. The program has already hired two dozen student interns in
a patient support assistant-intern (PSA-i) role.
“To continue to be the leader in local healthcare, we have to be
the leader in finding the best and brightest young talent,” said
Mindy Sanford, OhioHealth senior advisor of workforce development
partnerships and programs. “We believe with this collaboration
with two quality education entities, we have tapped into a
young professional pipeline, with an eye to a long healthcare career,
and a desire to serve our patients and live the OhioHealth mission
and values that make our organization special.”
Pre-nursing students will apply, interview, and have the potential
to be selected into the OhioHealth program. In this program,
pre-nursing students complete their State Tested Nursing Assistant
certification by the end of their junior year. The senior year will be
half classwork, the other half working in their paid PSA-i role.
In June, OhioHealth and Columbus State Community College
announced a partnership that will double the number of professionals
trained in five healthcare fields, addressing a critical need for
patient care specialists throughout central Ohio.
As part of this new collaboration, the program will serve as a potential
feeder program to the larger OhioHealth and Columbus
State Community College partnership.
“We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate
with OhioHealth in this transformative initiative,” said Todd
Hoadley, Ph.D., CEO and superintendent of Tolles Career and
In recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, Madison
County Protective Services planted pinwheels in the lawn at the
Madison County Courthouse. The “431” represents the number
of individuals who contacted the department in 2023 to report instances
of child abuse or neglect.
Technical Center.
“This relationship not only strengthens our commitment to providing
high-quality career technical education but also bridges the
gap between classroom learning and real-world experience. Our students
will greatly benefit from the hands-on experience, working
alongside healthcare professionals and interacting with patients,”
Hoadley continued. “Such exposure is invaluable as it extends their
learning beyond the traditional classroom setting, equipping them
with practical skills and insights necessary for a successful career
in healthcare. We look forward to seeing our students thrive and
grow through this unique and enriching experience.”
Christine Galvin, director of career-technical education at Southwestern
City Schools, said, “We are thrilled for our South-Western
Career Academy (SWCA) students to partner with OhioHealth on
innovative solutions to address the health care and workforce needs
of our community. This relationship will provide our students with
invaluable hands-on clinical experiences by allowing them to go directly
from the classroom to the hospital floor.
“OhioHealth and South-Western City Schools have a shared
focus on fostering the next generation of health care professionals
for tomorrow’s workforce. As we look to double the number of graduates
from our pre-nursing program heading into 2024, this partnership
will provide SWCA students with affordable, accessible,
and sustainable career opportunities through work-based learning.”
The goal is to grow this opportunity each year and continue to
open the pipeline of local healthcare talent, while adding jobs in the
local market.
Have you ever written
a mean letter to someone?
I definitely have.
Over the course of my
lifetime, I have written
hundreds — possibly
thousands — of letters to those who have disappointed
me. They have been addressed to
a wide variety of individuals and they include
my mother, my father, my sister, myself,
my friends, my boyfriends, my
ex-boyfriends, my teachers, my bosses,
politicians, the executives behind the decision
to discontinue my favorite facial moisturizer,
and other random people who have
met me on a bad day, or vice versa.
It is not lost on me that the sheer volume
of letters produced may come across as
slightly psychotic, but please know that
none of them were actually sent. In fact, the
vast majority of the letters were composed
in my head. This exercise primarily serves
as a way for me to blow off steam in order to
spare the feelings of others. Not that some
on the list didn’t deserve a strong tongue
lashing.
I am sharing this with you because I am
reviewing a movie that revolves around
mean letters. But in the case of “Wicked Little
Letters,” the letters are actually mailed
out, causing a huge firestorm. (Note: This is
why we sometimes keep things to ourselves.)
The black comedy is
based on a true story
about a scandal that
rocked Littlehampton,
England, in the early
1920s. It is a tale so
bizarre it seems completely
made up — but it
isn’t. Director Thea
Sharrock and writer
Jonny Sweet adapt the
events in a way that
maintains the raucous and filthy humor
while highlighting the internal and external
biases that make the individuals of this
time period behave the way they do.
At the center of this twisted tale are two
women, Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and
Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). Edith has
been a resident of this sleepy seaside town
her entire life, never marrying and still living
under the thumb of her domineering father,
Edward (Timothy Spall), and her kind
but passive mother, Victoria (Gemma
Jones). Raised in a devoutly religious household,
Edith has a buttoned-up personality
and only lives to serve the Lord and her jerk
of a dad.
One day, a boisterous woman named
Rose moves in next door to the Swan family.
A migrant from Ireland, she is “what people
feared women would become after the war
ended.” Despite the fact that she drinks like
a fish, swears like a sailor, and seldom
cleans the shared outhouse, Rose is a wonderful
mother to her young daughter, Nancy
(Alisha Weir), and a great friend to Edith —
possibly her first true friend in the world.
But something happens to cause a deep
rift in the friendship and shortly thereafter
obscene letters start showing up on Edith’s
doorstep. Naturally, the Swan family believes
Rose is the author, and they implore
the police to arrest her for the sake of “all
that is decent in the world.”
When Rose hears of the accusations, she
can’t help but wonder if she’s the butt of a
joke. “Why would I send letters when I’ll
just say it to your face?” she asks.
But because the police can’t stand Rose
and the “suffragette” attitude they feel is
poisoning their post-war nation, they arrest
her and charge her with the crime of sending
obscene letters. The only law enforcement
official who is sure of her innocence is
“woman police officer” Gladys Moss (Anjana
Vasan). Knowing Rose is quite poor and
can’t afford to send so many letters, she
tries to talk sense into her male coworkers
and superiors. However, they view her as
“only a woman” and dismiss her theories.
Gladys sets out to prove Rose’s innocence
and find the true perpetrator behind the letters
that read as if William Shakespeare
and George Carlin teamed up to create a
book of insults.
Promoters of “Wicked Little Letters”
tried to bill the movie as a mystery, but it
really is more like a throwback British comedy.
The real culprit behind the 1920s troll
campaign is obvious from the get-go but that
doesn’t detract from the film. The movie succeeds
thanks to the skills of its stellar ensemble
cast, all of whom take great delight
in the verbal sparring, the sleuthing, and
the tidal wave of obscenities that are unleashed
in this film.
Because of the vulgarities that run rampant
throughout its 95-minute run time,
“Wicked Little Letters” likely isn’t for anyone
who find that kind of humor unappealing.
But if you can get your ears to hear past
all that lewd noise, you will witness a really
entertaining movie about making and losing
friends and about women straining under
the pressure of a society designed to keep
them quietly at home, with nary a bad word
floating around in their heads.
Addressing Ohio's Housing Crisis:
A Call to Action from State Senator
Michele Reynolds
As a State Senator representing the people of Ohio, I am
deeply concerned about the housing crisis that is
impacting our state. From urban centers to rural
communities,Ohioans are struggling to find affordable
and stable housing options. This crisis affects not only
individuals and families, but also the overall economic
health of our state. It is time for us to come together and
take action to address this pressing issue.
One of the primary challenges facing Ohio is the lack of
affordable housing options for our residents. Many
hardworking Ohioans are spending a disproportionate
amount of their income on housing, leaving little room
for other essential expenses. This financial strain not
only affects individual households but also undermines
our state's ability to thrive economically.
To tackle the issue of affordable housing availability, we
must first recognize the importance of collaboration
among stakeholders. Public-private partnerships are
the key to solving this crisis. By working together, we
can leverage our collective resources and expertise to
make meaningful progress.
The public sector plays a crucial role in addressing the
affordable housing shortage by implementing policies
that support the development of affordable housing
units. This may include zoning changes to allow for
increased density and the construction of affordable
housing, incentives for developers to invest in affordable
housing projects, and partnerships with nonprofit
organizations to create housing opportunities for
low-income residents.
The private sector also has a crucial role to play in addressing
the affordable housing shortage, particularly
by investing in workforce housing solutions. Investing
in workforce housing solutions can take various forms,
including providing financial support for affordable
housing initiatives aimed specifically at workers in key
industries. By recognizing the importance of stable
housing for their employees, businesses can not only
attract and retain talent but also contribute to the overall
well-being of the communities in which they
operate.
As Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Housing, I
am committed to advocating for policies that promote
access to safe, affordable housing for all Ohio residents.
This includes increasing funding for affordable housing
programs, advocating for regulatory reforms that
support housing development, and championing
initiatives that address the root causes of the housing
crisis.
But I cannot do this alone. I urge all Ohioans to join me
in this important effort. Contact your local elected
officials, engage with community organizations, and
support businesses that prioritize workforce housing.
The housing crisis in Ohio is not insurmountable, but it
will require concerted action and commitment from all
of us. Let us rise to the challenge and work together to
build a brighter future for our state. Together, we can
make a difference and ensure that every Ohioan has a
place to call home.
Health. Born on June 3, 1953, in Columbus,
his family. He loved traveling, even
taking several solo trips throughout his life.
Some of his favorite destinations included
amusement parks in search of the newest,
tallest, and fastest roller coasters. He also
loved traveling to Virginia Beach; this was
always his favorite beach view. Ricky always
enjoyed the time spent with his family,
could break the cornhole boards out. His
