Green
Teens
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
A local organization is offering teens
looking for a summer job the opportunity
to spend some time outdoors while earning
some cash.
The Highland Youth Garden has
opened applications for the Green Teens
program, a paid, summer work program
at the garden for youth in the Hilltop
area ages 14 to 18. Teens who live or go to
school in Franklinton or in the Hilltop
areas are invited to apply for the program
that runs from mid-June through mid-
August.
Teens will work approximately 20
hours per week and help maintain the
garden by planting, weeding, fertilizing
and using hand tools.
The Highland Youth Garden is a halfacre
plot of land that sits at 67 S.
Highland Ave. just south of West Broad
Street and is home to a wide variety of
fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2023, the
garden produced 3,800 pounds of fresh
produce that was distributed to neighbors
and residents in need.
“At Highland Youth Garden, we are
interested in supporting our immediate
community: the Hilltop and
Franklinton,” executive director Shelly
Casto said. “We want to grow ‘the good
stuff’ right here, where so much good
already exists. We want teens to feel
pride in their neighborhood and play a
role in helping to build it up further.”
The Green Teens program began in
2019 and has employed 51 youth, Casto
says. This year, the organization aims to
hire 15 youth.
“We want teens to feel pride in their
neighborhood and play a role in helping
to build it up further,” she said. “We
believe that’s the way that all our communities
will thrive - by tapping into all
the talents and positive energy that
exists in a place and encouraging it to
thrive.”
Input sought on
zoning changes
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Should the construction of buildings
that are four to seven stories high be allowable
on portions of West Broad Street? Is
the area around Great Western and
Interstate-270 an ideal location for a seven
to 10 story mixed-use building? Should
members of area commissions continue to
have a role in approving or denying zoning
variances on properties in the community?
These are just a few of the questions westside
advocates want residents to consider
as city officials mull changes to the zoning
code.
The Columbus City Council voted earlier
this month to declare its intention to
amend the city’s current zoning code. It is
part of a multi-phased plan to modernize
the 70-year-old zoning code in order to
meet the demand for anticipated population
growth and to combat the rising housing
crisis.
The council did not vote to amend the
current zoning code at its meeting on April
8. Instead, the motion opened up a 60-day
comment period for the public to provide
feedback on the proposal. It also kick-started
an engagement campaign with local
area commissions to discuss how the zoning
changes could impact their community.
ZONING
Continued from page 1
Greater Hilltop Area Commissioner Dan Fagan served
on the ‘Zone-In’ initiative’s advisory committee. He said
during a discussion on the proposed zoning code at the
commission meeting on April 9 that it was “vital” for residents
to understand what was in the code and to give feedback
on the potential changes.
“This proposed zoning code change could impact our
area and region for generations to come,” he said. “It is
vital that our residents have a voice — and use their voice
— during this public comment period.”
Some of the most notable changes in the proposed phase
one draft plan — phase one would focus on roughly 12,000
parcels of land along main streets that serve as transportation
corridors — include replacing the more than 40 zoning
districts in the current code with six mixed-use district
types. The six district types in the proposed new code are:
•Community Activity Center — Suburban locations with
medium-sized buildings and parking lots. The proposed
zoning would focus on building more housing and making
the area more walkable. Primary building height is five to
seven stories. Latter building height would be permitted if
developers agree to set aside space for affordable housing
units.
•Regional Activity Center — Key locations in suburban
areas with large buildings and parking lots. Proposed zoning
would help these areas change into more walkable
areas with housing, offices, and commercial buildings.
Primary building height is between seven to 10 stories.
Latter building height would be permitted if developers
agree to set aside space for affordable housing units.
•Urban General 1 — Older areas of the city, on secondary
corridors and between major intersections. Proposed
zoning would enable construction of housing and
retail on empty parcels and parking lots, and support
reuse of older buildings. The primary building
height is 4 stories.
•Urban General 2 — Older areas of the city, with
houses and offices built back from the streets.
Proposed zoning would support construction of
small shops, housing and offices, and the reuse of
older buildings. Primary building height is four stories.
•Urban Center — Areas of the city at key intersections
and by major bus stops. Proposed zoning
would enable the construction of taller buildings for
housing, offices and retail on empty parcels and
parking lots, as well as the reuse of older and taller
buildings. Primary building height is between five
to seven stories. Latter building height would be
permitted if developers agreed to set aside space for
affordable housing units.
•Urban Core — Older areas of the city near
downtown and major activity centers with existing
tall buildings. Proposed zoning would create opportunity
for redevelopment at the highest densities,
reuse of older buildings, and construction of taller
buildings for housing, offices and retail on empty
parcels and parking lots. Primary building height
is between 12 and 16 stories. Latter building height
would be permitted if developers agree to set aside
space for affordable housing units.
Specific areas along Sullivant Avenue and West
Broad Street have been identified as the best places
for some of the new mixed-use districts in phase
one of the proposed zoning code. Stephanie
Kensler, principal planner with the city’s building
and zoning services department, highlighted what
mixed-use districts could go where if city council
approves the zoning code later this summer.
According to Kensler, most of West Broad Street
that is located in the Hilltop area is being proposed
for Urban General 1. The allowable uses would be
residential, office, retail, civic uses and non-autooriented
commercial. However, several key intersections
or transit stops — such as the intersection
of West Broad and Hague Avenue — would be zoned
as Urban Center with buildings that could be
between five to seven stories.
The area around Great Western and I-270 would
be zoned as a Regional Activity Center, said
Kensler. The allowable uses would be residential,
office, retail, civic and commercial and the building
height could be between seven to 10 stories.
Most of Sullivant Avenue would be zoned as
Urban General 1. However, Kensler noted, the
intersection at Hague and Sullivant would be
zoned as Urban Center and there would also be a
“node” of Urban General 2 near Westgate Park on
www.columbusmessenger.com
the north side of Sullivant.
“This zone is unique and is for special areas that have
their own development patterns,” said Kensler about
Urban General 2. “It would be for select areas that are
either residential or office zoned and are restrictive about
the types of commercial that can be in that space.”
Community Activity Center would be zoned for portions
of Sullivant Avenue, near Demorest and Wilson and going
westward, said Kensler.
In the proposed new code, developers would be able to
choose how many parking spots they set aside. That means
the property owner could scale the parking to anticipated
demand but would not be forced by the code to create a
specified number of parking spaces. City officials believe
developers would build an appropriate number of parking
spaces as it “would be in their best interest to create a
product that people want.”
There would also be a greater focus on creating more
walkable neighborhoods and bike-friendly corridors in the
proposed zoning code.
Commissioner Keith Neal expressed mixed feelings
about the proposed zoning changes. He said that while he
understands what the city is trying to do to address anticipated
population growth and to combat the rising housing
crisis, he is concerned that city officials are focusing more
on what the future may hold rather than the current state
of the neighborhoods.
“I understand about the future and growth, but I’m worried
about the here and the now,” he said, “They talk about
creating walking areas and we can’t even have a decent
walking area here now because we have these boarded up
houses, we have houses needing to be repaired, but I keep
hearing the city people talk about progress. We have needs
on the Hilltop that haven’t been addressed so how do we
improve what we already have now?”
Several commissioners said they were concerned that
the proposed zoning code would reduce the ability of area
commissioners to give input on development plans and
zoning variances within their community. City officials
have said that by lessening the need for developers to go
before local advisory boards, it would speed up the development
process of needed projects such as in-demand
housing.
Commissioner Nick Bates said he feels that area commissions
would be “better equipped” to know what residents
want rather than the city officials and developers
who do not live in the community.
Comments like these are what fellow commissioner Dan
Fagan said he wants to be submitted to the council during
this period. He said the city administration, council, and
planners need to hear all thoughts — the good and the bad
— to be able to consider all aspects of the proposed zoning
code.
“I cannot overstate how important it is that the community
give their feedback on the proposal,” he said. “It will
be a give and take process but I believe they (the city officials)
are willing to take the comments provided and give
it a lot of consideration.”
Residents can give feedback on the proposed zoning
changes in a variety of ways during the comment period
that runs through June 10. A special website has been created
at columbus.gov/zoningupdate. It includes an interactive
map for residents to see the zoning changes in their
area on a street by street basis and give feedback accordingly.
Residents may also visit the Zone In Gallery, located
at 141 N. Front Street, where they can learn about the
code proposal and have their questions answered by city
planners. Information on open hours and scheduling tours
are available at columbus.gov/zoningupdate under ‘The
Gallery’ tab. Residents can also email
Township police to use grant for traffic enforcement
By Andrea Cordle
Westside Editor
Residents in Franklin Township are fed up with drivers who do
not follow the rules of the road.
According to Franklin Township Sgt. David Pollock, traffic complaints
are one of the top concerns officers hear from residents.
Pollock said they receive numerous complaints about speed on
Alkire Road, drivers using the turn lane on Clime Road to pass
traffic, people running the traffic light at Frank and Brown Road,
and drivers passing on the shoulder of Harrisburg Pike.
“We’ve had pedestrians stuck on West Broad Street and on
Harrisburg Pike,” said Pollock. “We also get a lot of complaints
about people driving four wheelers or dirt bikes in the neighborhoods.”
This is why township officials applied for a traffic safety grant
with the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Last month, the township
was notified that it had received the traffic safety grant in the
amount of $24,245. This grant allows the township to get reimbursement
funds for officers who work overtime on traffic enforcement.
According to the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, it is responsible for
administering federal highway safety funds for programs designed
to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on Ohio roadways.
Pollock said the grant is awarded based on traffic fatalities in
the area within the past few years. The grant provides federal
funds to eligible entities for projects such as traffic safety education,
and enforcement.
The grant runs from the beginning of April through the end of
September. Not only will township officers work overtime to target
these traffic complaints, the grant will also help fund traffic safety
neighborhood park, but will cover a large area of South Central
Hilltop as well as Central Hilltop and north of Sullivant Avenue.
initiatives like Click it or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over.
According to Pollock, this grant will be beneficial to the township
because without the overtime, officers do not always have the
time to spend of traffic enforcement. Pollock said the township,
like many agencies, are understaffed and calls for service take
precedence over traffic enforcement.
“This grant will allow our officers to focus solely on traffic
enforcement without taking away regular patrol resources,” said
the sergeant.
Franklin Township currently has 11 full-time sworn officers,
including the police chief and lieutenant, though Pollock said they
would like to increase that number to 13.
He said the timing of the grant is ideal because there are more
fatal crashes in the summer.
“Of the traffic fatalities, one third involve speed and many are
impaired,” said Pollock.
His advice for drivers — slow down.
“Just be safe and stay alert,” said Pollock.
The township’s police department also intends to apply for
another grant in May.
Governor
DeWine’s
State of the State
Address
It is customary for Ohio’s Governor to speak to the
General Assembly annually to update legislators, as
well as the state’s citizens, with the progress the
state is making and his initiatives for the coming
year. On April 10, Governor DeWine gave his 2024
State of the State address.
Ohio government enjoys few events where formality,
pomp, and circumstance are center stage. This
may be the centerpiece. Held in the historic chambers
of the House of Representatives, every one of
the most important state officials are present, including
the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, both
first ladies, all the remaining statewide elected officials,
members of the Ohio Supreme Court, every
State Senator and Representative, and all the governor’s
cabinet officers. The Speaker of the House
begins the day by introducing a minister for a prayer
and then leads the Pledge of Allegiance. After asking
the Speaker Pro Tem to announce a quorum of
House members, he introduces the President of the
Senate, who presides over the event. Once the Senate
President secures the announcement of the
Senate President Pro Tem that a quorum of senators
is present, he then introduces the governor. The
governor enters the Chamber escorted by the remaining
officers of both legislative houses.
In his 63-minute address, Governor DeWine quickly
got to the theme of his talk: Ohio’s children. He outlined
the initiatives that he feels will make the most
impact on the health, education, and welfare of our
next generation of Ohio’s leaders. He first spoke of
Ohio’s initiative to provide every child under five
with an age-appropriate book each month for his
parents to read to him. Currently, 60% of such children
are part of this private-sector-funded effort.
He then praised Ohio’s educational reading initiative,
known as the Science of Reading (which emphasizes
phonics instruction), and how it already
has resulted in increased numbers of young Ohio
students reading at grade level. He asked university
education programs to align their teacher training
curriculum accordingly. Other children’s initiatives
included making career planning a part of graduation
requirements, increased access to vision checking
and corrective glasses for all young children,
and additional emphasis on children’s mental
health issues. Here he called for requirements for
parental notification for social media use, policies
aimed at the limitation of cell phone use at school,
and financial incentives for college students to pursue
behavioral health professions. He concluded his
remarks with an anecdote about the Pennsylvania’s
governor’s frustration with Ohio beating out its
eastern neighbor in landing large jobs and economic
development projects and emphasizing the
urgency to address these children-related issues
now.
Kennedy told the board the district is
rapidly approaching 4,000 students who
are enrolled in the program that helps
them obtain second language proficiency.
“We currently have 3,816 identified
English language learners in the district at
this point in time,” he said.
It is the largest number of students who
have been enrolled in the program since
the district began identifying English
learners.
Kennedy said the only decline he
expects to see is when students exit the
program after receiving second language
proficiency status.
“Accounting for all of our demographic
data we track, we can safely assume that
we will continue to see a rise in our EL population,”
he said. “This is especially the
case considering the many different
refugee situations created by things happening
throughout the world, as well as in
consideration of the status of Columbus,
Ohio as a primary relocation point area
once refugees have entered through other
cities throughout the country.”
The native language the majority of students
in the English Learner program
speak is Spanish.
“Seventy to 71 percent of our families
and our students are Spanish speaking,”
said Kennedy.
Spanish is followed by Somali or Arabic
at 20 percent, Ukrainian at 6 percent, and
Hakha Chin at 3 percent. Overall, there
are close to 80 different languages and
dialects spoken in the district.
Kennedy said when students whose
native language is not English enroll in the
district, the majority of them — approximately
53 percent — meet state newcomer
requirements. The newcomer status is
based on their arrival date in United States
schools or their second language acquisition
results on state English Language
Proficiency assessments.
Kennedy explained that this can pose a
Hilltop Legal Clinic
The Legal Aid Society of Columbus will
host a Hilltop Legal Clinic every Monday
from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Columbus
Metropolitan Library Hilltop Branch, 511
attorney will be available to answer questions
regarding landlord and tenant issues,
public benefits, consumer debt, and family
law. To receive free advice, you must have
a gross household income below 200 percent
of the Federal Poverty Level. For more
information, call Legal Aid at 614-241-
Free legal advice
at Westland Library
The Legal Aid Society of Columbus will
offer free legal advice the third Tuesday of
“real challenge” to the district’s EL educators,
especially if those newcomers are in
grades 8-12.
According to Kennedy, research shows
that second language acquisition is
acquired in two ways: The first step is
through basic interpersonal communication
skills (BICS), which typically involves
being able to carry on a conversation with
a native speaker. Those oral language
skills can be developed within one to three
years.
The second step is through cognitive
academic language proficiency (CALP),
which typically involves being able to
understand formal academic language.
Those skills can be developed within five to
seven years.
Kennedy said the “great complicator” in
that research is that it can take students
who are in grades 8-12 up to seven to 12
years to acquire cognitive academic language
proficiency. Given that the district
will not have that much time with a majority
of those students, Kennedy said it is “all
hands on deck” to help them obtain proficiency.
“Everything we do has to be about how
we lessen that time, how we get our kids to
English language proficiency quicker and
[in order to do that] we have to start with
BICS before we can get to CALP.”
He said the district is able to do that by
working with the staff to “leverage oral language
and phonics practice to help students
move toward oral language proficiency
that leads to comprehension and proficiency
in reading and writing in the content
areas.”
In addition to the 3,816 identified
English language learners in the district,
there are a little more than 2,100 former
EL students currently enrolled in the district
who have exited the program because
they have demonstrated proficiency in second
language acquisition.
through their NJROTC programming and
values and that has spilled over into the
rest of our school where there is a tangible
sense of pride in supporting the military
community. Our Comets should be incredibly
proud of this distinction and we look
forward to finding new ways to engage military-connected
families in our school, community,
and beyond in the years to come.”
To qualify for the Purple Star designation,
schools choose a school-based staff
person to serve as a liaison between military
families and the school. These liaisons
complete professional development, identify
military-connected students, and facilitate
supports throughout the school community
for identified students and families.
Purple Star schools also participate in
at least one supportive activity each year.
The Purple Star Class of 2024 includes
schools that host monthly military kids
club meetings, provide professional learning
for all educators on the unique considerations
of military-connected students,
implement peer-to-peer transition programs,
or host school-wide celebrations
honoring military students and families.
According to Ohio Governor Mike
DeWine and Ohio Department of
Education and Workforce Director Stephen
Dackin, 171 Ohio schools are receiving the
Purple Star designation as members of the
Purple Star Class of 2024.
“Ohio is a leader in its support to military
families and the Purple Star program
is a wonderful example of how this support
extends to children in our schools,” said
DeWine. “I applaud Ohio’s Purple Star
schools and thank them for supporting military-connected
students and ensuring
they have the services and learning
resources to succeed.”
“Congratulations to this year’s class of
Ohio Purple Star schools for supporting
student success, strengthening school-family
partnerships, and recognizing the sacrifice
of military service members and their
families,” said Dackin. “It is wonderful to
see the meaningful ways Ohio’s learning
communities are showcasing their commitment
to military families.”
A Purple Star school receives the designation
for three years, after which the
school can apply for renewal of the designation.
Applications for the next class of
Purple Star schools will open in November.

How to drive more efficiently
Many people aspire to drive more efficiently
in an attempt to conserve fuel, save
money and reduce the carbon footprints of
their vehicles. But driving efficiently can
also make driving safer for motorists, their
passengers and everyone else, including
pedestrians, sharing the roads.
Drivers who want to drive more efficiently
can implement a variety of strategies
to do just that.
•Obey the speed limits. Speed limits are
determined with safety in mind, and drivers
should always adhere to posted speed
limits to protect themselves, their passengers
and others on the road.
•Do not idle a vehicle. The
Environmental Defense Fund notes that
electronic engines do not need to warm up,
even in winter when temperatures are
especially cold.
•Use cruise control wisely.
•Tighten the gas cap. When gas caps
are loose, fuel evaporates. The Car Care
Council notes that loose, missing or damaged
gas caps contribute to the evaporation
of roughly 147 million gallons of gas per
year. That’s both wasteful and costly.
When filling up at the gas station, turn the
cap until your hear it click.
Driving efficiently can make roadways
safer, benefit the environment and save
drivers considerable amounts of money.
Ohio Victory Gardens
program continues to grow
www.columbusmessenger.com
Ohio’s movement to promote urban and
rural gardening is back and bigger than
ever. The Ohio Department of Agriculture
(ODA) and Ohio State University
Extension are partnering once again to
encourage Ohioans to cultivate their own
produce.
The popular Ohio Victory Gardens program
is back for its fifth year and due to
high demand, the program is expanding to
include 64 counties. OSU Extension offices
will be handing out the free seed sample
kits to the public to get people planting.
The office in Franklin County began giving
out the sample kits on April 10. The office
is located at 2548 Carmack Road in
Columbus and is open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“We want all Ohioans to experience the
pride of growing their own food,” said ODA
Director Brian Baldridge. “Planting those
seeds, watching that produce grow, and
being able to provide those nutritious foods
for your family is a wonderful opportunity
to be involved in agriculture. We encourage
all folks to plant their own victory garden.”
This year’s program will benefit up to
19,200 Ohioans. Each of the participating
counties will receive 300 sample seed kits
that contain carrot, cucumber, lettuce, and
sunflower seeds.
“Our partnership with ODA on the Ohio
Victory Garden program allows Ohioans to
learn about agriculture and where their
food comes from,” said Dr. Cathann Kress,
vice president of agricultural administration
and dean of The Ohio State
University’s College of Food, Agricultural,
and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). “It
provides a glimpse into the science and
dedication involved by those who work in
the food system every day to bring fresh
produce into grocery stores, farmer’s markets,
and restaurants.”
The Hilltop YMCA hosts a fresh produce
giveaway the third Wednesday of
each month from 4 to 6 p.m. at 2879
OSU Extension is the community-based
outreach arm of CFAES, with programming
that addresses agriculture and natural
resources, community development,
family and consumer sciences, and 4-H
youth development. Extension professionals
throughout the state bring people and
ideas together to help CFAES sustain life.
Extension’s educational outreach is
enhanced by more than 3,200 master gardener
volunteers, who support the Ohio
Victory Gardens program by providing gardening
advice, helping with community
gardens, and promoting local food production
among their neighbors throughout the
state.
All Ohio Victory Gardens participants
will be eligible to win a free starter gardening
toolkit by completing a short online
survey.
Victory Gardens originated during
World War I as an answer to a severe food
shortage at the time. The idea was wildly
successful, growing an army of amateur
gardeners and serving to boost morale and
patriotism. ODA and OSU Extension
revived the effort and are, once again,
encouraging people to plant seeds, realize
the fruits of their labor, and share their
harvest with others if inspired.
This program is funded through a
USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant.
“Wicked Little Letters” is a throwback to British comedy
Have you ever written a mean letter to
someone? I definitely have.
Over the course of my lifetime, I have
written hundreds — possibly thousands — of
letters to those who have disappointed me.
They have been addressed to a wide variety
of individuals and they include my mother,
my father, my sister, myself, my friends,
my boyfriends, my ex-boyfriends, my teachers,
my bosses, politicians, the executives
behind the decision to discontinue my
favorite facial moisturizer, and other random
people who have met me on a bad day,
or vice versa.
It is not lost on me that the sheer volume
of letters produced may come across as
slightly psychotic, but please know that
none of them were actually sent. In fact,
the vast majority of the letters were composed
within my head and this exercise primarily
serves as a way for me to blow off
steam in order to spare the feelings of others.
Not that some on the aforementioned
list did not deserve a strong tongue lashing.
The reason why I am sharing a favored
coping mechanism with you all is because I
am reviewing a movie for this column that
revolves around mean letters. But in the
case of the aptly titled “Wicked Little
Letters,” the slighted party mailed out
those missives, causing a huge firestorm in
the process. (Note: This is why we sometimes
keep things to ourselves.)
The black comedy is based on a true
As the information technology sector
continues to grow in central Ohio, Franklin
County has launched a new workforce initiative
to meet rising demand.
The Franklin County Commissioners
recently approved over $549,000 to support
the new Broadband Futures program,
which will provide training and employment
opportunities in the fiber technician
field.
This innovative new partnership
between Franklin County Department of
Job and Family Services (JFS) and the
National Center for Urban Solutions
(NCUS) TEC will focus on recruiting unemployed
and underemployed residents to
start on this new career path. Participants
of the program will undergo rigorous training
to prepare them for good paying fiber
technician careers.
story of a scandal that rocked the town of
Littlehampton, England in the early 1920s.
It is a tale that is so bizarre that it seems
completely made up — but it isn’t. What
director Thea Sharrock and writer Jonny
Sweet do well is adapt the events in a way
that maintains all of its raucous and filthy
humor while also highlighting the internal
and external biases that make the individuals
of this time period behave the way
they do.
At the center of this twisted and true
tale are two women, Edith Swan (Olivia
Colman) and Rose Gooding (Jessie
Buckley). Edith has been a resident of this
sleepy seaside town her entire life, never
marrying and still living under the thumb
of her domineering father Edward
(Timothy Spall) and her kind but passive
mother Victoria (Gemma Jones). Raised in
a devoutly religious household, Edith has a
buttoned-up personality and only lives to
serve the Lord and her jerk of a dad.
One day, a boisterous woman named
Rose moves in next door to the Swan family.
A migrant from Ireland, she is “what
people feared women would become after
the war ended.” Despite the fact that she
drinks like a fish, swears like a sailor, and
seldom cleans the shared outhouse, Rose is
a wonderful mother to her young daughter
Nancy (Alisha Weir) and a great friend to
Edith — possibly her first true friend in the
world.
But something happens to cause a deep
Township Fire Station, 3650 Hoover Road.
Prescription and over the counter and
pet medications in pill, powder or patch
form will be accepted. Place all medications
in a clear, sealed bag. Needles, lancets,
news and notes
rift in the friendship and shortly thereafter
obscene letters start showing up on Edith’s
doorstep. Naturally, the Swan family
believes that Rose is the author of the filthy
and anonymous missives and they implore
the police to arrest her for the sake of “all
that is decent in the world.”
When presented with the working theory
that she is behind the vulgar letters —
they read as if William Shakespeare and
George Carlin teamed up to create a book
of insults — Rose cannot help but wonder if
this is a joke being played on her. “Why
would I send letters when I’ll just say it to
your face?” she asks.
But because the police cannot stand
Rose and the “suffragette” attitude they
feel is poisoning their post-war nation, they
arrest her and charge her with the crime of
sending obscene letters. The only law
enforcement official who is sure of her innocence
is “woman police officer” Gladys Moss
(Anjana Vasan). Knowing that Rose is
quite poor and cannot afford to send so
many letters, she tries to talk some sense
into her male coworkers and superiors.
However, they view her as “only a woman”
and dismiss her theories. Although stymied
by the antiquated views on her gender,
Gladys sets out to prove Rose’s innocence
and find the true perpetrator behind the
wicked little letters.
In the lead up to its release date last
week, “Wicked Little Letters” has tried to
bill itself as a mystery but it really is more
syringes, inhalers, aerosols, liquids, creams
and pastes will not be accepted.
This event is sponsored by the city of
Enforcement Administration, Grove City
“This collaboration will help us place
talented and often overlooked residents of
Franklin County on promising bright
career tracks,” JFS Director Michelle
Lindeboom said. “Broadband Futures will
help close opportunity gaps while creating
the fiber-optic networks to better connect
communities and grow the local tech sector.
Whether increasing access to broadband
or supporting massive data centers for the
likes of Amazon and Facebook, fiber-optic
cables are vital technology infrastructure.
As the demand for fiber technicians continues
to rise, Broadband Futures will connect
residents, particularly those from marginalized
communities across the county, to
these middle-class careers.
“This program is not just about addressing
unemployment numbers and statistics,
it’s about providing skills training and connecting
residents with a new career that
they can be passionate and excited about,”
JFS Chief Administrator Vivian Turner
said. “We’ll also be providing ongoing support
and mentoring through the first year
of their career journey.”
Participants will receive six weeks of
skilled training, where they will prepare to
complete the Fiber Optics basic installer
certification, along with coaching, mentoring,
and other supportive services to
remove barriers and ensure successful
completion.
Broadband Futures graduates will be
referred to employment opportunities with
NCUS TEC’s network employer partners
where they have the opportunity to earn
starting wages ranging from $22 to $30 an
hour.
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
like a throwback British comedy. The real
culprit behind the 1920s troll campaign is
obvious from the get-go but that does not
detract from the overall delight of this
movie. Even though the direction and the
writer is quite deft, the movie truly succeeds
thanks to the skills of its stellar
ensemble cast, all of whom take great
delight in the verbal sparring, the
sleuthing, and the tidal wave of obscenities
that are unleashed in this film.
Because of the vulgarities that run rampant
throughout its 95 minute run time,
“Wicked Little Letters” will likely not be for
those who find that kind of humor unappealing.
But if you can get your ears to hear
past all that lewd noise, you will be witnessing
a really delightful movie about
making and losing friends, and about
women straining under the pressure of a
society that is designed to keep them quietly
at home, with nary a bad word floating
around in their heads.
Gregory, senior vice president for NCUS.
“With the generous support from Franklin
job training and industry credentials
but also empowering individuals to secure
meaningful employment opportunities.”
Under the new partnership, NCUS will
Volunteers needed to Sound the Alarm
The Central and Southern Ohio Region
of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers
for its 2024 Sound the Alarm campaign
taking place through May 4.
Sound the Alarm is part of the larger
Red Cross Home Fire Campaign which
aims to reduce home fire deaths and
injuries through providing disaster preparedness
information, home fire safety
instruction and the installation of free
smoke alarms. Since the program’s inception
in 2014, more than 36,000 families in
central and southern Ohio been made safer
through the Red Cross Home Fire
Campaign. Of the approximately 62,000
disasters the Red Cross responds to across
the country every year, more than 90 percent
are home fires.
There are two types of volunteer opportunities
available:
1. Volunteers are being sought to go into
designated neighborhoods and leave
behind informational door hangers, alerting
residents that the Red Cross will soon
be in the area to install free smoke alarms.
2. Volunteers are needed to install free
smoke alarms in area homes.
Volunteers who sign up to participate
would be working with other Red Cross volunteers
and members of local fire departments.
Anyone interested in volunteering
should visit our Regional Sound The Alarm
Hub
through
redcross.org/CentralAndSouthernOH.
Residents in need of free state-of-the-art
smoke alarms can call the Red Cross hotline
to make an installation appointment
