A SMART MOVE
Three years ago, Eddie Tam and Edia Chow made a big decision: to uproot
their lives – and their suit hire business – from the bustling streets of
Hong Kong and settle in the serene enclave of South Woodford
What was the motivation behind
our move? Primarily, it was for our
children’s education, but also for
the opportunity to expand our menswear
and tuxedo business, MODE London, to the
UK market.
London, with its rich fashion culture and
historical ties to Hong Kong, seemed like the
perfect fit. And it was South Woodford that
captured our hearts. Nestled close enough
to the city for convenience, yet far enough to
retain a peaceful charm, this neighbourhood
felt like home from the moment we arrived.
The transition, however, wasn’t without its
challenges. Adapting to the cultural nuances
and customer behaviours was a learning
curve. What we thought we knew about
running a business didn’t always align with
the reality of operating in a new environment.
Client preferences vary significantly between
Hong Kong and the UK markets. While Hong
Kong clients often opt for more elaborate
styles for their pre-wedding and wedding
day attire, local clients here in the UK tend to
prefer simpler yet elegant designs.
Moreover, the lifestyle in Hong Kong is
characterised by high pressure in terms of
work and study due to intense competition.
In contrast, South Woodford offers a more
relaxed and balanced approach to life,
allowing us to fully embrace the change and
appreciate the tranquillity of our new home.
Life in South Woodford has a different rhythm
compared to Hong Kong. At first, the slower
pace felt foreign to us, accustomed as we
were to the frenetic energy of city life. But
over time, we’ve come to appreciate the more
laid-back atmosphere. The living environment
in South Woodford also offers a stark contrast

to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, space for leisure
activities for our children and pets was limited,
whereas South Woodford boasts abundant
greenery and spacious surroundings. Of
course, there are aspects of home we miss
dearly, including our home-town foods.
While cooking in our new home has become
a necessity, the bustling energy of London’s
Chinatown offers a taste of familiarity.
Yet, despite these adjustments, what we love
most about South Woodford is its people.
The genuine warmth and friendliness of
the community has made us feel welcomed
and accepted from day one. Whether it’s
striking up conversations with neighbours or
interacting with customers in our shop, the
sense of camaraderie here is truly special.
As we reflect on our journey thus far, we’re
filled with gratitude for the opportunity to
call South Woodford home. The support of
this community has truly helped us – and
our business – thrive. So, here’s to embracing
change, cherishing diversity and celebrating
the spirit of South Woodford.
