WellStone’s New Crisis
Care Center for Kids
By Karen Peterson,
Director of Development WellStone
It’s a big year for mental health in Alabama. WellStone, a nonpro 昀椀 t
community mental health center, is just months from opening the
state’s 昀椀 rst stand-alone crisis care center for kids.
While many North Alabamians anxiously await the addition of the
new facility, perhaps no one is more excited than Dr. Edgar Finn,
who has spent decades working in pediatric psychiatry.
“Life is dif 昀椀 cult for young people, and it's also quite complicated,”
said Finn, the new crisis center’s Medical Director. “Researchers
note increasing evidence of mental illness in youths, including anxiety
and depression, sometimes leading to tragedies such as suicide.”
One study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), for instance,
determined that, in 2021, 42 percent of US high school students reported
feeling very sad or hopeless almost every day for at least two
weeks, and nearly 25 percent of students considered harming themselves
during that same year. Substance abuse also remains a top
concern. Even though overall
use is down, adolescent overdoses
are on the rise due to
counterfeit illicit drugs.
Even though times are increasingly
tough for kids,
Finn reminds us that youth
are “amazingly resilient
when given the appropriate
resources for recovery.
Those appropriate resources
will soon be available to kids

Services—Pediatrics. Fite

main South Parkway campus. The original WES facility currently
admits approximately 150 men and women monthly, with crises
ranging from severe depression to self-harm, suicidal thoughts to
substance misuse.
Like the adult facility, the pediatric wing will be staffed by a caring,
experienced team who will serve adolescents in a warm, open, and
compassionate setting.
“My goal for our new program is to provide a safe, welcoming
space which allows young people to feel understood and cared for,
listened to, and accepted,” explained Finn. “I want our treatment
environment to be engaging and supportive as we collaborate with
the young person and their family in dealing with the crisis at hand.
Ultimately, the goal is to keep hope alive for all young people admitted
on what may be their ‘worst day ever’ and transform this day
into ‘the day things started getting better."

The 24-bed, 12,000 square foot pediatric unit will be a dream come
true for members of the Tennessee Valley healthcare community, as
well as everyone with loved ones, particularly kids and teens, struggling
with mental illness and/or substance use disorders (SUD).
HEMSI transports 800 children suffering from a myriad of mental
health crises out of Madison County every year. Finn and his
team of nurse practitioners, therapists, peer support specialists,
and medical techs will be charged with de-escalating the crises;
stabilizing, diagnosing, and treating their clients; and mapping out
recovery plans moving forward.
“The impact of crisis care for youths in our community cannot
be overstated,” Finn added. “Access to psychiatric services is a
critical part of community well-being, in much the same way that
access to pediatric medical care is vital. I am anxious to see how
our community bene 昀椀 ts from work being done here, and hope for
community support for the efforts made to improve mental health
care in this region.”
Community members who wish to support the work at WES’s pediatric
unit are encouraged to join hundreds of other donors who
have contributed to WellStone’s “Be the Rock—Kids” capital
campaign. WellStone is about $1.2 million shy of its $2.5 million
Be the Rock fundraising goal, and plans to wrap up the campaign
by year-end. To help them reach their fundraising target, you can

No representation is made that the quality of legal services to be performed
is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.
It’s the season for spring cleaning, a time when we take extra steps to spruce up our homes
and yards. For the City, it’s also a time to enlist volunteers to help make Huntsville a better
and more beautiful place.
Thanks to Green Team, there are numerous opportunities for you to participate in keeping
Huntsville clean and green. All you need is a willing spirit and a little time.
An easy way to get started is to join a community cleanup event, beginning with the
annual Spring Plant & Cleanup Supply Giveaway on April 12 at the Jaycee Building in
John Hunt Park. Swing by from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and receive free tomato and cucumber
plants along with cleanup supplies.
Next, step into action at the South Huntsville Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 18 from 8
to 11 a.m. Grab your kids, neighbors and friends and meet at Kent Robertson Park, 7620
Logan Drive SW. Green Team will hand out the supplies you need and assign volunteers
to an area requiring attention. Household Hazardous Waste will also be collected, including
household cleaners and chemicals, batteries and old electronics.
On May 4, Green Team and the Southeast Family YMCA will host a cleanup service
project at Ditto Landing on May 4 from 8 a.m.to noon. This is a great opportunity to
meet new people and help beautify one of our greatest recreational assets.
If you prefer to choose a location to cleanup, Green Team’s Adopt-a-Spot program may
be the right choice. This organized effort pairs residents and businesses with a designated
area to collect litter. Spots could be in a park or a greenway as well as along the
road. It could also be a creek or stream, areas often overlooked in cleanup efforts.
Whether you choose to Adopt-a-Spot as an individual, club, business or organization,
this program allows more 昀氀 exibility to put your civic pride into action. If working along
a roadway is a little daunting, maybe you have a smaller spot or a nearby park in mind
that you want to care for. Green Team wants to make it as easy as possible. They provide
all the tools needed for a cleanup: safety vests, gloves, pick-up sticks and garbage bags.
Arrangements can be made to collect the bags of garbage that are picked up.
Adopt-a-Spot programs typically call for six cleanups a year – once every other month.
With helping hands, the beauty of Huntsville can become still even more beautiful.
Let’s work together for a Litter Free Huntsville! For more information, please visit us
at HuntsvilleAl.gov/Green-Team.
Green Team wants to help you help the community. The bene 昀椀 ts go beyond the aesthetic
bene 昀椀 ts of removing unsightly litter from a public space.

The Arc of Madison County
© Best Version Media
By Wendy Pittard, Autism Services Coordinator
Have you ever been concerned about your child’s development or
wondered if they are progressing as they should? It is easy to begin
comparing your child’s development to other children around
you. Sometimes children need a little extra help in meeting their
developmental milestones. Children can show a delay for a number
of reasons but most children catch up to their peers before entering
Kindergarten, especially when families are given the tools they
need to help their child succeed.
The Arc of Madison County’s Pediatric Outpatient Center can assist
families with helping their child develop and grow to reach their
milestones. The Pediatric Outpatient Center provides speech and
occupational therapies to children birth to 5 years of age. The Pediatric
Outpatient Center is comprised of pediatric therapists who
provide a play-based approach to assisting children and their families
with meeting their developmental needs. This play-based approach
makes learning fun! The children we serve think they are
just here to play – they don’t realize that we are actually working
on skills (Shhh, don’t tell them!). Our goal is to help young children
reach their greatest potential.
The Pediatric Outpatient Center was established in 2020. The Arc
of Madison County has provided Early Intervention services (inhome
services and supports to families of children ages 0-3 years
old) for many years. When in-home visits became nearly impossible
in 2020 due to the pandemic, Early Intervention switched to
virtual visits via tele-health. However, The Arc of Madison County
recognized that some children still needed a hands-on approach to
best support the child’s development. Like many of our programs,
The Arc of Madison County saw a need in the community, determined
a way to meet that need - and so The Pediatric Outpatient
Center began.
Our pediatric speech therapists help children with articulation disorders,
昀氀 uency disorders, communication challenges, and language
disorders. Each child receives an individualized speech therapy
plan, which may address cognitive or developmental delays, weak
oral muscles, and communication issues.
Our pediatric occupational therapists help children gain independence
while also strengthening the development of 昀椀 ne motor skills
and hand-eye coordination skills that they need to function and
socialize. They can also help children with swallowing and feeding
disorders. Each child receives an individualized occupational
therapy plan, which may also address sensory integration disorders
and self-care skills.
Our treatment rooms have equipment and toys ready to help children
learn new skills. Mirrors allow our pediatric therapists to work
on oral motor skills, feeding skills, sound production, and imitation.
Swings help to work on sensory needs, balance, core strength, and
body awareness. We provide a variety of seating options for children
to feel most comfortable during their play-based therapy. We
even have an outdoor playground to work on exploring different
surfaces, stair climbing, crawling on hands and knees, and getting
in and out of different body positions.
The Pediatric Outpatient Center accepts Medicaid, TRICARE, Blue
Cross Blue Shield, and ALL Kids. If you would like to inquire more
about our services or have concerns about your child’s development,
please visit our website at www.hsvarc.org or contact us at
(256) 696-5700.

Space Monkeys The Story of Baker and Able
By Emily Rodrick Marketing Fantasy Playhouse
Sometimes inspiration comes from two monkeys on Jefferson
Street, and that’s exactly what happened to Fantasy Playhouse
Children’s Theater & Academy’s (FPCTA) Artistic Director,
Stephen Tyler Davis.
One day when getting reacquainted with Huntsville, he asked his
good friend and FPCTA super-volunteer, Joanna White, “What are those two
monkeys hanging from the 106 Jefferson in downtown Huntsville?” White was
shocked that Davis had grown up in Huntsville and was unaware of the history
of the two brave Monkeynauts who were the 昀椀 rst Americans to complete a successful
mission into outer space - Baker & Able!
A quick history of Baker & Able: Baker, a 1lb squirrel monkey, and Able, a rhesus
monkey, were the 昀椀 rst American primates to complete a successful mission
into outer space. Able, unfortunately, passed due to surgery complications after
her return to Earth.
Miss Baker would become somewhat of a celebrity after her return to Earth. After
a brief stint in Florida, Miss Baker moved to Huntsville, AL at the US Space
& Rocket Center where she would settle until her passing in 1984. A memorial
for Miss Baker is located at the US Space & Rocket Center. Families still leave
bananas on her memorial in honor of her and Able.
With FPCTA’s 63rd season encompassing the theme of ‘Brave Stories, Brave
Spaces,’ Davis knew that telling the story of these famous Monkeynauts would
be the perfect ending to the season. During the writing process, Davis consulted
with community members who were close to Miss Baker and the US Space &
Rocket Center to get a 昀椀 rst-hand account of who Miss Baker was and what her
legacy meant to Rocket City. Using 昀椀 rsthand accounts, historical texts, and personal
touches, Davis created what would be the last production of FPCTA’s 63rd
season, Space Monkeys! The Adventures of Baker & Able - a love letter to the
Rocket City that highlights just what can be accomplished when you set your
sights on the moon and beyond.
This fresh new script is fun, the history is true, and the cast is huge! There are
over 50 actors cast, but when Miss Baker’s origin story calls for 26 squirrel
monkeys, you’ve got to have 26 squirrel monkeys! Other roles include hilarious
interpretations of real-life historical characters like fellow Monkeynaut Ham &
George. George is Miss Baker’s betrothed monkey husband who lived with her
in Huntsville for many years.
Space Monkeys is told through the eyes of SPAMO, a 昀椀 ctional secret
space society created by the Huntsville kids of today. Every full
moon they convene in their treehouse for space missions and this
month, they seek to induct a new member. A slight problem though,
the new inductee has never heard of America’s famous Space Monkeys!
Blast off into space with the SPAMO kids as they retell the
story of Baker & Able through moments in history, music, dance,
lasers, special effects, and animated projections!
Join FPCTA this May for a story that will bring all generations of
Huntsville together! Space Monkeys is one weekend only, May
9-12, 2024 performed at the Von Braun Center Playhouse.
Sensory Friendly Performance is on Saturday, May 11th @10AM.

Diabetes The Causes and Symptoms
By Adilene Guzman, Community Outreach Coordinator, HAPPI Health
There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes
is caused by the pancreas producing little or no insulin,
often due to genetics, viruses, or environmental factors due to
the cause of type 1 why; it is considered an autoimmune disorder.
Type 2 diabetes on the other hand, occurs when the body
becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't use it properly. This type
is frequently associated with lifestyle factors like a sedentary
lifestyle, an unhealthy diet, or obesity. It's important to note that
while type 1 diabetes is not preventable, patients can avoid type
2 diabetes or delay the condition by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Understanding the symptoms and early signs of diabetes, regardless
of its type, is essential and should be discussed with your
doctor. These can include increased thirst or hunger, fatigue,
frequent urination, unexplained or unintentional weight loss,
blurred vision, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, darkened
skin, usually on the neck or armpits, slow-healing wounds
or sores, and frequent or recurring infections. By recognizing
these signs early, you can take control of your health and potentially
prevent the onset of diabetes.

Getting a yearly check-up and having a primary care physician
is essential. The reason is that there are tests that can help detect
blood sugar levels, indicating if prediabetes or diabetes is present.
Prediabetes is a stage where your blood sugar levels are elevated
but not high enough to be considered diabetic. Your doctor
can determine your blood sugar levels by conducting an A1C
(blood sugar test), a fasting blood sugar test, or a glucose tolerance
test. Suppose a patient is found to be pre-diabetic. In that
case, their doctor will recommend changes in their lifestyle, such
as changing their eating habits, following a diet, losing weight,
and exercising to manage their levels. In doing so, the patient can
avoid taking diabetic medications or insulin injections.
There is an elevated number of children and adults who are developing
diabetes due to a lack of physical activity or poor eating
habits. The rise in cases concerns doctors, as diabetes is a chronic
condition that has no cure. This means that once a person is
diagnosed, they will have to learn how to manage their condition
daily to avoid further complications. Diabetes can affect major
organs like the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, and kidneys.
All of this can lead to other severe or chronic medical conditions,
for example, liver disease, nerve damage, heart problems, and
even dementia.
Once diagnosed with diabetes, it is vital to surround yourself
with people who encourage your wellbeing and a good medical
support team to help you navigate through the process. This is

Vision Care and Diabetes: What You Should Know
By Dr. Patricia Fulmer, Legacy Vision Center
Diabetes is one of the most common, impactful, and costly diseases
in America. In Alabama speci 昀椀 cally, 14.1% of adults, just
over 550,000 people, have been diagnosed with another 119,000
living with the disease without knowing it. Expenses related to
the condition have been estimated at $5.9 billion each year for
Alabamians, but the physical costs are even higher. Serious complications
can include heart disease, stroke, amputation, end-stage
kidney disease, blindness, and for some, death. (American Diabetes
Association)
The eyes are one of the most affected systems in diabetes, but
fortunately, they are also one of the most helpful in the diagnosis
and control of the disease. This is because the eye is the only location
in the body that we can view blood vessels without imaging
or surgery.
For patients with a family history of diabetes or who are otherwise
at risk, a comprehensive eye examination can be the 昀椀 rst line of
defense in detecting the illness. During the exam, your eye doctor
will look at the retina, the tissue in the back of the eye responsible
for capturing and transmitting what you see. In uncontrolled diabetes
such as in an undiagnosed patient, the small blood vessels
in the back of the eye become fragile and leak, leading to the appearance
of small hemorrhages within the retina. Identifying the
tell-tale look of these bleeds can prompt orders for blood work to
diagnose the condition and get the patient the care he or she needs.
For patients who are already diagnosed as diabetic, the annual
comprehensive eye exam is an integral part in their care for
the following reasons:
• Protection of vision - Complications from diabetes can lead
to vision changes, vision loss, and blindness if left untreated.
Patients who experience elevated or shifting blood sugar can
have 昀氀 uctuations in their prescriptions, causing blurriness. In
these cases, an update in glasses or contacts can temporarily improve
symptoms but will likely need to be changed again when
the blood sugar returns to a controlled level. In its most severe
form, diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss in one of two
ways. Fluid can accumulate in the macula (the location of our
best central vision), which creates blur and distortion of vision
that cannot be improved with an updated glasses prescription.
This 昀椀 nding requires injections into the eye or laser treatment.
The second cause of vision loss is due to the growth of new blood
vessels which can lead to bleeding within the eye, a retinal tear,
or retinal detachment over time. If caught early enough, this can
be treated with injections to reduce the vessels or laser therapy to
repair the detachment/tear. Unfortunately, if these complications
are not diagnosed in a timely fashion, patients’ vision loss can
lead to irreversible blindness. Annual comprehensive eye exams
will allow for detection of diabetic damage and a follow up and
treatment schedule can be determined accordingly.
YOUR Vision, OUR Focus
COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAMS
• Systemic care - As mentioned above, the optometrist will
view the retina to evaluate how well-controlled the condition is.
What is seen in these vessels is often a mirror of what is taking
place throughout the body, particularly in the kidneys. Depending
upon the exam 昀椀 ndings, the patient’s primary care provider
can then adjust or change the course of therapy as needed in
order to prevent debilitating complications or death.
While diabetes can be a challenging condition for many patients,
making sure to have annual comprehensive eye examinations is
one of the most important steps in ensuring the best control and
identifying risks to the patient. If you or a loved one is diabetic or
at risk, make sure to schedule your exam today!

Hearing Health Matters:
Diabetes and Hearing Loss
“When we arrive on this earth we are endowed with the most
perfect, the most ef 昀椀 cient, and the best constructed machine
ever devised – our body. “ - Alton Ochsner, MD
Our bodies are designed to function like a machine with the brain
(control center) activating motors (muscles that move our body) to
operate systems for pumping, waste disposal, heart regulating and
alarm systems. A great deal of energy is required by the body to operate
all these systems and that energy is supplied by the food taken
in. Systems that perform essential life functions require care and
maintenance. The health of the whole body in 昀氀 uences the integrity
of all its parts. Knowing how the body functions helps you understand
the impact of dysfunction on it.
Metabolism is a complex process using many different chemicals,
hormones, cells and organs to convert food and drink into energy
and get rid of waste. Metabolic disorders happen when one of the
many parts of these processes malfunction. Diabetes is a metabolic
disorder that affects how the body produces and/or turns food into
energy (glucose). Insulin is the hormone made by the pancreas that
lets glucose pass from the blood into the cells to supply energy. High
blood glucose (sugar) levels trigger the release of insulin. When
your body doesn’t produce or use insulin effectively, too much

blood sugar accumulates and becomes toxic. Long term impact includes
damage to the blood vessels that deliver oxygen/nutrients to
the body organs and the inability of the nerves to send information
to different parts of the body, including the ears.
The three main types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational
(diabetes while pregnant).
Type 1 diabetes: Thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction
(the body attacks itself by mistake and stops the body from making
insulin.) Occurs at any age. Accounts for 5-10% of diabetic diagnoses.
Symptoms often develop quickly. Insulin is required every day
to survive. No prevention.
Type 2 Diabetes: The body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep
blood sugar at normal levels. Accounts for 90-95% of diabetic diagnoses.
Develops over many years, usually diagnosed in adults (but
now increasing in children, teens, and young adults). Can be prevented
or delayed with a healthy lifestyle.
In the medical world, health conditions that develop are referred to
as morbidities. Coexisting health conditions are called comorbidities.
Thirty-eight million US adults have diabetes and they are twice
as likely to develop hearing loss as someone without it. (ADA/CDC)

Diabetes damages small blood vessels in the inner ear and disrupts
the nerves that transmit sound from the inner ear to the brain causing
loss of hearing. Research shows that 73.6% of people with diabetes
have high blood pressure (hypertension) which makes blood travel
through the vessels much faster, damaging the vessel lining, and
letting fatty plaque buildup. As blood pressure increases, hearing
decreases. Smoking, which is known to cause Type 2 diabetes, adds
nicotine and carbon monoxide which constrict the blood vessels of
the ear.
Hearing loss is invisible and only diagnosed by professionals using
specialized equipment. The CDC recommends that you have your
hearing tested by an audiologist once diagnosed with diabetes and
every year after. Hearing loss can’t be reversed but can be protected
by keeping your blood sugar levels in the target range.
“Hearing loss matters profoundly. It doesn’t just affect an individual’s
inability to understand conversations, it also encompasses
aspects of balance, alertness to environmental hazards, and the
enjoyment of music or the everyday sounds of nature. An impaired
hearing can lead to a de 昀椀 cit in these experiences, ultimately compromising
the quality of life.”
—Jabe Brown, founder of Australia-based
Melbourne Functional Medicine.
It is extremely important to seek treatment for both your diabetes
and hearing loss for your health and quality of life.
On a personal note:
March 21, 2023: My then 2-year-old grandson, Van, was
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes changing the trajectory
of our family’s life. As Grammy, I am part of Van’s management
team and responsible for treating his diabetes
and maintaining his health until he can do so himself. My
desire is for Van to live a long, healthy life. If you are
diabetic, you are the CEO of your own body. Make the
choice to manage it well and invest in yourself for a long,
healthy life. As part of that investment, protect your hearing
and improve your quality of life by reconnecting with
your world by seeking help for your hearing loss.

Your Discs and Jelly Donuts
By Dr. Christine Spurlock DC, Fiona Wellness Center
Did I mention donuts just to get your attention? Actually, a jelly
donut is a perfect example of something familiar that is similar to
the discs in your spine. Even better, picturing a jelly donut can
help you understand what is happening when your discs come
under pressure and bulge outward.
The spine is an elegant compromise in form and function. To
achieve the range of motion your neck and back require, a little
bit of stability is sacri 昀椀 ced. Your spine has twenty-four bones
stacked on top of one another. In between those bones, acting as
cushiony pillows, are the discs that keep your bones from grinding
against each other when you turn your head or swing a golf
club. The ligaments are the ropes that lock these bones together,
while the muscles use tendons to grab hold of the bones and
contract for movement. Last but not least, we have the nerves,
which use the spine as their freeway to get messages to and from
the brain.
Okay, back to the jelly donut. Like our calorie-laden friend,
discs have two layers. The jelly, or nucleus, sits safely in the
center. Just as the donut’s crust keeps the jelly from getting all
over your hands, your annulus is the tough outer layer of the disc
that holds everything in place.
Compressed disc put pressure on nerves, causing pain. Decompression
therapy lifts pressure from nerves, relieving pain naturally.
When a disc is herniated, the donut crust becomes weak and the
soft center spills out. A bulging disc is what we get when a weak
spot bulges out due to internal pressure. What causes it to bulge is
sometimes hard to pin down. In some cases, it can happen after lifting
something heavy or a car wreck, but often it is just wear and tear
since our discs age just like the rest of our bodies.
A healthy disc keeps spaces between the bones in your back. When
they degenerate some of that space is compromised. Your spinal
cord uses those spaces as tunnels for nerves to transmit through.
A nerve will let you know when it is not getting the space it needs
in the form of radiating pain or numbness down your arms or legs.
Due to gravity and all that we ask of our bodies, a disc usually needs
outside help to get back to its optimal state.

OZONE THERAPY:
Harnessing the Power of Ozone
for Holistic Wellness
By Dr.Charles Lee and Dr. Casey Wardynski COL USA (RET),
Regenesis Stem Cell Center
In the pursuit of health and vitality, innovation takes center stage.
Enter ozone therapy, a groundbreaking approach to holistic wellbeing
that leverages the bene 昀椀 ts of ozone—a highly reactive
form of oxygen. Ozone therapy, derived from pure oxygen, offers
a wide range of bene 昀椀 ts that promote overall wellness.
At its core, ozone therapy introduces ozone—a molecule of three
oxygen atoms—into the body via IV infusion. This process triggers
various biological mechanisms that unleash a cascade of
health bene 昀椀 ts. Primarily recognized for its ability to boost metabolism,
ozone therapy becomes an invaluable tool in weight
management. By boosting the body's metabolic processes, it aids
individuals in burning calories and attaining their 昀椀 tness goals.
The advantages of ozone therapy extend far beyond weight
management. By fortifying the immune system, ozone therapy
equips the body with robust defenses against illness and infection.
This immune boost is reinforced by an increase in white
blood cell count, empowering the body to combat pathogens and
maintain optimal health.
Ozone therapy also enhances circulation by delivering oxygenrich
blood throughout the body. This not only combats neuropathy
and enhances cellular function but also breaks down arterial
plaque, promoting cardiovascular health and vitality.
In the 昀椀 ght against pathogens, ozone therapy is a potent ally. Its
antimicrobial properties effectively target bacteria, viruses, fungal
infections, and yeast infections, aiding relief from a spectrum
of ailments.
Furthermore, ozone therapy exhibits remarkable anti-in 昀氀 ammatory
properties, bene 昀椀 ting conditions like arthritis, asthma, and
Crohn's disease. By reducing in 昀氀 ammation and oxidative damage,
ozone therapy alleviates chronic pain and discomfort.

Notably, ozone therapy offers cosmetic bene 昀椀 ts too. By promoting
skin rejuvenation through collagen and elastin production, it
contributes to radiant, youthful-looking skin and is a powerful
adjunct to laser and RF Microneedling aesthetic procedures.
In addition to these bene 昀椀 ts, ozone therapy holds promise for
cancer patients. Studies indicate it can signi 昀椀 cantly increase tumor
necrosis, providing a powerful adjunctive treatment to conventional
therapies.
Furthermore, ozone therapy aids detoxi 昀椀 cation, eliminating
harmful toxins and pollutants, and offers relief to those with
chronic pain conditions like 昀椀 bromyalgia and migraines. It also
enhances cognitive function, boosting productivity and overall
well-being.
Ozone therapy is typically administered through intravenous
(IV) infusion or Autohemotherapy, where blood is withdrawn,
mixed with ozone, and reintroduced into the body. This ensures
direct delivery of ozone into the bloodstream, maximizing its
therapeutic effects. At Regenesis we offer both of these forms of
ozone therapy:
• Infusion of 500mL or 1,000mL of ozonated sterile water
which takes about 30 minutes.
• Autohemotherapy in which patient blood is drawn into an
IV bag, ozonated and then reinfused into the patient. This
process also takes about 30 minutes.
In summary, ozone therapy presents a comprehensive approach
to wellness, effectively addressing diverse health concerns.
From cancer support to detoxi 昀椀 cation, pain relief, and cognitive
enhancement, ozone therapy can be an important part of a multifaceted
solution.
Experience ozone therapy at Regenesis and embark on a journey
towards a healthier, happier life.

Military
Spouses
Meet Sharon Olshefski:
Sharon Olshefski is the military spouse of COL (Ret) John Olshefski,
former Garrison Commander at Redstone Arsenal. A native of
Summerville, South Carolina, she attended The College of Charleston
where she earned a B.S. In Business Administration and later
earned a Master of Divinity from Regent University.
She and John met when John was attending The Citadel. “He was
literally the boy next door. We became friends and the rest is history.”
They will be happily married 43 years in June 2024 and together
experienced 22 moves in 27 years of Army service.
Sharon worked 17 years in various DOD positions as well as served
faithfully in varied chapel women’s ministries. She served two
terms (2015-2022) as the appointed District 3 Representative for the
City of Huntsville Human Relations Commission. In 2011 Sharon
established the Second Mile Development’s Baby Care Program/
Neighborhood Baby Thrift Store for which she served as Director
until 2018. She then became the Director, Pride for Parents/Neighborhood
Thrift Store, another ministry arm of Second Mile and continues
to serve in this capacity.
When asked did the Army experience change or prepare you in any
way, Sharon replied, “Absolutely yes. I was a very naïve, introverted,
small town girl. Being an Army spouse forced me to broaden
my horizons, develop independence and courage to face different
and sometimes dif 昀椀 cult situations and people; and to be adaptable.
It exposed me to a bigger vision of a life of service to others; a sense
of community; and a spirit of volunteerism. I also learned that I love
people. Working within the DOD taught me the power of a joint
vision; the value of organized structure and focus to make a vision
a reality. All of this prepared me for the type of ministry in which I
have the privilege to serve today.”
Sharon is a woman of deep faith. She became a born-again Christian
in 1993 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Her work at Second Mile
Development, Inc. is an extension of her Christian commitment and
her culminating experience as an Army spouse. “Receiving Jesus
Christ was the most important and life-changing decision of my life.
I am hungry for living out His Word.”
Best Story? When John wanted to transfer from reserves to active
duty during our 昀椀 rst year of marriage, I simply offered, “That’s
wonderful but be sure to tell them we don’t go overseas.” Our 昀椀 rst
assignment? Germany. I subsequently spent 8 years overseas.
The most interesting assignment? “No doubt: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Experiencing SKUD attacks
throughout a month challenged the core of my being. It was terrifying.
One quick take-away is the fact that a crisis does reveal the
fabric of a person. After observing certain behaviors and leadership
styles, I prayed that I would be more like those who inspire con 昀椀 -
dence and calm amidst a storm rather than fear and insecurity. I am
very grateful now for that experience.”
Military Spouse Appreciation Day occurs on May 10th this year.
As we discussed her life as a military spouse, Sharon thought having
a day like this is a notable way to honor the service and sacri-
昀椀 ce of all military spouses. “We should recognize the contributions
of military spouses; we do make a difference in the world; we too
serve sacri 昀椀 cially.”
You can’t sit down with Sharon and not come away with some sage
advice. Her advice to active military spouses is simple, “The Army
is a lifestyle of service and sacri 昀椀 ce, not just a J-O-B. Spouses may
not make dinner every night. Treasure every moment together. Embrace
the lifestyle and the culture.” For retiring spouses her advice
is also simple, “There is life beyond the military, and a good one.
The military life gives you so many valuable skills. Venture out,
you have plenty to offer!”

Meet Deborah McGee:
What happens when a career-driven military spouse retires by the
lake? He or she may soak up some rays, do some yoga, and enjoy
that lake life…for a while. A quiet retirement would be enough for
most, but it was just the beginning of a brand-new, faith- 昀椀 lled adventure
for one local military spouse.
Deborah E. McGee ran large corporate functions as a CPA and HR
professional for 20 years, working through most of her husband’s
31-year military career. She worked for 昀椀 rms such as Doosan Infracore
and KPMG. She even continued her career OCONUS (Outside
the Continental United States), focusing on ex-pat taxation during
her husband’s overseas assignment to Germany in the 1990s.
Deborah changed careers from CPA to HR during a PCS (Permanent
Change of Station) move. This is common for military spouses,
who move often with their service members and cannot always 昀椀 nd
an available position in their 昀椀 eld when arriving in a new location.
When the McGees moved to Guntersville, Alabama, Deborah continued
her international work by traveling between Lake Guntersville,
South Korea, and Virginia.
The company cut Deborah’s position in an abrupt restructuring
move just three (3) months before Deborah was due to retire in
2013. With an early severance, she was set to relax by the lake. As
expected, she soaked up some rays, practiced yoga, and recharged.
Deborah also reconnected with her faith.
Faith-driven re 昀氀 ection helped Deborah realize she had been a headled
leader her entire career. It also “opened [her] eyes to a different
type of leadership.” As she developed an appreciation for heart-led
leadership, her life and mindset changed completely.
Six (6) months into retirement, Deborah was infused with a new
drive to work and lead. She started with “just some consulting” and
no real network. She discovered the North Alabama Society for Human
Resource Management (NASHRM) and began building a new
network in the local HR community.
Deborah founded PZI International Consulting, a woman-owned
small business in Huntsville, just ten (10) short years ago in 2014.
Today, she is the founder/owner of seven (7) companies with 350
employees with activities in 30 countries. Those companies are:
PZI International Consulting
PZI International Solutions
The Clark Global Institute
Talent Mobility Solutions
PZI International Bene 昀椀 ts Brokerage
Business Systems Solutions
PZI International Group
As of the printing of this article, Deborah E. McGee is also a published
author with Forbes books. The Leadership Attitude: Head-
Led Leader to Heart-Led Leader, A Faith-Filled Story is now available
for pre-order on Amazon. This is the full story of her leadership
journey - how she founded a faith-based business that she leads
with “care, dignity, and support.” She has created an environment
of “truly putting people 昀椀 rst through hard work and expense.” As
Deborah describes, this is possible simply by “the power of just
saying yes.”

That power of “saying yes” has fueled a highly successful group of
companies with a sought-after company culture that embraces opportunities,
innovation, and creativity. It has also propelled PZI International
et al. to be a leader in military spouse employment. Just
a couple of the policies that are attractive to everyone, especially
military spouses, include offering up to 昀椀 ve (5) hours per month of
paid volunteer time and a new vacation donation program.
Deborah has been involved with numerous professional organizations
in Huntsville and the surrounding area, including Leadership
Huntsville’s Flagship Program, the Women’s Business Board, the

backbone of our military.
You can recognize military spouses throughout May and every day
simply by giving them a chance. Whether it is as a newcomer to
your area or a potential employee, whatever the situation, give a
military spouse the chance to be himself or herself and to get involved
with your groups, organizations, and businesses – even if
they are only in your life for a short time before having to move to

Are You Prepared For A Divorce?
By Rebecca Winters, Attorney–At-Law
I often get questions regarding what to consider
before 昀椀 ling for a divorce in Alabama. This is
usually something that you will discuss at your
initial consultation with your attorney. However,
I feel it is best to come to your consultation
with questions and thoughts of items you are considering before
your 昀椀 rst consultation. After all, a divorce can have long-lasting
implications on not only your life, but the lives of your family
members, therefore, is crucial to carefully consider various factors.
Divorce is a signi 昀椀 cant life decision that requires thoughtful
re 昀氀 ection and planning to navigate the process effectively. Here
are essential considerations to ponder before moving forward
with a divorce:
1. Emotional preparedness: Divorce can be emotionally taxing,
leading to feelings of grief, anger, and sadness. It is important to
have a plan in place to equip yourself with the knowledge and
tools to cope with the stress of divorce. This can be counseling,
speaking with a divorce support group, or educating yourself
through research.
2. Your family and children: A divorce with children not only affects
the parents, but can have lasting impacts on your children

and their lives. It is important to consider the best interests of
your children but oftentimes their well-being gets shadowed by
the large emotions of personal struggle that comes with divorce.
3. Finances and 昀椀 nancial assets: A divorce will require a deep
re 昀氀 ection of your marital assets that need to be divided including
debts but will also lead to consideration of your preparedness
during and after the divorce as well. It is important to know your
昀椀 nancial status when navigating a divorce because you will need
to plan for your 昀椀 nancial security after the divorce is 昀椀 nal.
4. Legal counsel: It is important to select an attorney that you are
comfortable working with and who understands your goals for
the divorce. This person will be your voice in court or mediation.
If you are not comfortable with your attorney, this can lead to
added stress to an already stressful situation.
5. Support system: It is nearly impossible to navigate your divorce
alone. It is important to lean on family, friends, or a support group
so that they may help your throughout the process. Often, you may
lose sight of the end goal or what is important to you because you
are deep into the process of divorce.
6. Communication and co-parenting: It is always important to relay
to your attorney how you and your spouse communicate or don’t
communicate. There are guidelines and tools that you can put into
place that may aid in future communication between you and your
ex spouse, especially when you are co-parenting.
7. Your future goals: A divorce is often the closing of one chapter of
your life and the beginning of another. It is wise to not only focus
on the immediate goals of obtaining a divorce, but your future goals
as well.
In conclusion, divorce is a signi 昀椀 cant life event that requires careful
consideration of various factors before proceeding. If you address
these factors before the process begins, you can navigate this challenging
process with greater clarity and preparedness. Seek support
from professionals and loved ones to help you through this transition
and prioritize your well-being and that of your family members.

By Robert Alley Caring Transitions of Huntsville
As the golden years unfold, many seniors 昀椀 nd themselves facing

present into a vibrant tapestry of discovery.
Many of the river cruise ships have bikes on board and guided bike

hidden gems and surprises along the way.
These smaller vessels with fewer passengers make for more intimate

river cruise ships hold only 100 to 200 guests; many sell out well
over a year in advance. Planning ahead is key.

Why Holts Siding and Replacement Windows By Mike Holt, Owner
Holt’s Siding and Replacement Windows, a true family owned and operated
business since 1986. Originally a vinyl siding business only we
operated as Holt’s Vinyl Siding. A few years after I established the business
with my father, after retiring at 51 years old, he came to work with
me. He again retired recently but over the years has been an asset to
the business. I started to work in this 昀椀 eld as a siding installer in 1985.
Previously, like many in the construction business, I started as a “nail
driver” on a house framing crew. After a few months of installing vinyl
siding and sof 昀椀 ts, I became the supervisor of the installation crew that I
worked with. I made the decision to start my own business in June 1986.
As the years passed, I have expanded my services to include energy ef-
昀椀 cient windows, seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts, shutters,
entrance doors, as well as patio and French Doors.
At Holt’s we sell and install Simonton energy ef 昀椀 cient windows. Energy
savings has always been a major focus for homeowners and energy
ef 昀椀 cient products are a necessity. Simonton offers a premium vinyl that
guarantees a durable and energy ef 昀椀 cient window and is a great investment
for a higher resale value of your home. Aside from re 昀氀 ecting heat
their Low-E Argon gas 昀椀 lled glass also protects both 昀氀 ooring and furniture
in the home. Simonton Windows has been recognized for manufacturing
vinyl windows that feature high ef 昀椀 ciency and greater durability.
Simonton is known for its quality products delivered with the highest
level of customer service. In 2021, ENERGY STAR even recognized
the company as one of the most ef 昀椀 cient products, an award reserved
for the best performing Window Company on the market. Simonton
windows are customizable for different purposes and functions. Simonton
offers a lifetime warranty for households. If the house is sold, the
warranty transfers one time to the new owner. If your home has the
original windows and they are drafty or milky due to seal failure, then
Simonton Ef 昀椀 cient Windows installed by Holt’s can be your solution.
At Holt’s we can acquire various brands of siding. Since we started our
business, we have seen that vinyl siding has improved over the years. We
now prefer Mitten Highland Building Products. The Highland line offers
6 different .042 thick pro 昀椀 les with 17 assorted colors to choose from.
Siding pro 昀椀 les include:
• Double 4” Horizontal
• Double 4.5” Horizontal
• Double 4.5” Dutch Lap
• Double 5” Dutch Lap
• Double 5” Horizontal and Triple 3
• You can choose Highland with con 昀椀 dence.
• 3 bold 16 natural standard colors
• Color matched aluminum and accessories
• Premium 0.42 nominal thickness provides durability.
• Attractive pro 昀椀 le selections to compliment a wide variety
of architectural styling
• Satin, low gloss, color-rich 昀椀 nish with wood grain texture
• Hurricane force wind speed rated
• Lifetime color fade protection
• Limited lifetime transferable warranty
The backbone of any business is the employees. Regardless how
quali 昀椀 ed and knowledgeable the business owner is he can’t be successful
on their own, especially not in the construction business.
At Holt’s I take pride in the knowledge, workmanship and overall
character of our installation crews. We do background checks, and
those along with their daily routine of being on time and giving an
honest day’s work. I am not only proud of them but I have complete
con 昀椀 dence in them also.
I’ve mentioned pride, yes. I am proud of where we have come
from starting with nothing but a vision and work ethic to stay the
course and bring the vision to life - 38 years in business taught me
a lot. We have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and
have been a part of that organization for years. We are a member of
TVA’s Quali 昀椀 ed Contractors Network. This membership allows us
to participate in TVA’s programs with various utility companies in
the area. We are also members of Simonton Windows Pro Network.
Now I am honored to be part of the South Huntsville Neighbors
family. I have worked to maintain a solid foundation by providing
quality products, knowledgeable and respectful installers’ and
overall integrity.
Everyone needs energy ef 昀椀 cient windows, or if you are in the
market for new siding or gutters contact us to schedule an appointment
in the comfort of your own home. Allow us to add you
to our extensive list of satis 昀椀 ed customers.

Troubleshooting Issues with Your Garage
Door's Red Emergency Release Cord
By Tammy Warren, Co-Owner
Overhead Door Company of
Huntsville/North Alabama
Garage doors are essential for the security and functionality of
our homes, providing convenience and protection for vehicles
and belongings. However, it can be frustrating and concerning
when a garage door refuses to open after pulling the red emergency
release cord. This guide will explore the potential reasons
behind this issue and provide step-by-step troubleshooting tips to
help you resolve it.
Understanding the Red Emergency Release
The red emergency release cord on a garage door system is a safety
mechanism that allows manual garage door operation in situations
like power outages or opener malfunctions. When pulled, this cord
disengages the door from the automatic opener, enabling you to
move it manually along its track.
How to Engage and Disengage the Red Emergency
Release Cord
Pulling the cord disengages the door from the powered carriage, facilitating
manual opening and closing.
Ensure the Door is Closed: Before detaching the garage door opener,
ensure the door is securely closed to prevent accidents.

Activate the Emergency Release: Pull the red emergency release
cord hanging from the door's trolley to disconnect the opener and
enable manual control.
Operate the door Manually: After activation, manually open and
close the door, then return it to the closed position.
Re-engage the Trolley: Pull the emergency release cord towards
the door to re-engage the trolley with the opener carriage.
Reconnect the Trolley: You have two options to reconnect the
trolley to the opener carriage: Manually move the door until you
hear a click indicating they are securely reconnected, or use the
garage door opener's remote for an automatic re-engagement. It's
crucial to ensure you hear the click sound, con 昀椀 rm the secure connection,
and prepare the system for automated use again.
Note: Some garage door openers may need to be reset after this
process. Consult your opener's manual for the correct reset procedure,
which may involve brie 昀氀 y unplugging the opener or pressing
a reset button.
Potential Issues and Tips
• Track and Roller Problems: Misaligned tracks or worn-out rollers
can impede the door's movement. Before using the emergency
release cord, close the door and inspect the tracks for damage.
• Spring and Cable Failures: Broken springs or frayed cables can
make the door heavy and hazardous to lift manually. It's safer to
keep the door closed and seek professional repair services.
• Locks and Latches: Ensure manual locks are disengaged and
modern security features are correctly reset.
• Obstructions: Physical or sensor blockages can hinder door
movement. Clear any obstacles before attempting manual operation.
Preventive Maintenance
Regular lubrication, hardware tightening, balance tests, and professional
inspections are crucial to prevent garage door issues. Using
appropriate lubricants and following safety protocols during
maintenance can prolong the door's lifespan and ensure smooth
operation.
Helping our customers since 1968, trust our team at Overhead
Door Company
If these troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue or if you're
uncomfortable with DIY 昀椀 xes, it's best to contact a professional
garage door service for safe and ef 昀椀 cient repairs. Regular maintenance
and awareness can prevent many problems, ensuring your
garage door operates smoothly and safely.

The Power of Curb Appeal:
Making a Lasting Impression from the Outside
By Darin Windham,
Realtor, Key 昀椀 nders Group
RE/MAX TODAY
In the realm of real estate and home design, there's a phrase
that holds immense sway: curb appeal. It's the intangible charm
that captivates passersby, the allure that beckons guests and potential
buyers alike. Curb appeal is more than just a super 昀椀 cial
façade; it's the 昀椀 rst impression, the welcoming embrace that
sets the tone for what lies beyond. In this article, we'll explore
the signi 昀椀 cance of curb appeal and offer insights into how to
enhance it to leave a lasting impact.
What is Curb Appeal? Curb appeal is the visual attractiveness
of a property as viewed from the street. It encompasses various
elements, including landscaping, exterior design, architectural
details, and overall maintenance. Essentially, it's the exterior
aesthetic that draws people in and piques their interest in exploring
further. First impressions do matter, whether it's potential
homebuyers, guests, or even just passers by. The exterior
of your home is the 昀椀 rst thing they see. A well-maintained and
visually appealing exterior creates a positive initial impression,
making people more inclined to want to see more. Homes with
high curb appeal tend to command higher prices and attract
more buyers. Investing in the exterior appearance of your home
can yield signi 昀椀 cant returns when it comes time to sell.
Tips for Enhancing Curb Appeal
Landscape with Care: A lush, well-maintained landscape can
work wonders for curb appeal. Keep lawns neatly manicured,
plant colorful 昀氀 owers, and add greenery to create a welcoming
ambiance.
Upgrade the Entryway: The front door is a focal point of the
exterior. Consider painting it a bold color, adding stylish hardware,
and incorporating decorative accents like a wreath or potted
plants.
Address Maintenance Issues: Repair any visible signs of wear
and tear, such as cracked sidewalks, peeling paint, or broken
昀椀 xtures. A fresh coat of paint or minor repairs can make a world
of difference.
Illuminate with Lighting: Outdoor lighting not only enhances
safety and security but also adds ambiance to your home's exterior.
Install 昀椀 xtures to highlight architectural features, pathways,
and landscaping.
Accessorize Thoughtfully: Pay attention to details like house
numbers, mailboxes, and outdoor furniture. Choose cohesive,
stylish elements that complement the overall design aesthetic.
Keep it Clean: Regularly clean windows, siding, and outdoor
surfaces to maintain a fresh, inviting appearance. Remove debris,
trim overgrown vegetation, and keep walkways clear and
clutter-free.
Curb appeal is a powerful tool for creating a favorable impression
and increasing the desirability of your home. By investing
time and effort into enhancing the exterior appearance, you
can elevate your property's allure and make a lasting impact
on visitors and potential buyers alike. Remember, the journey
begins at the curb, where 昀椀 rst impressions pave the way for the
memorable experiences that lie ahead.

Tired of “One-Size-Fits-All” Insurance?? By Cheryl Knighten
Can you imagine a world where your vehicle insurance premium is
tailored precisely to your driving habits? Your good driving behavior
is rewarded with tangible bene 昀椀 ts! Now let’s consider removing
the mysteries of rate calculations and replace them with data-driven
evidence of your time driving on the road. This is no longer the stuff
of imagination; it is the transformative reality brought forth by the
advent of telematics in modern vehicle insurance policies.
Not familiar with Telematics Technology? Telematics Technology
was 昀椀 rst introduced in 1998. Its’ objective was to revolutionize, while
also personalizing, your auto insurance. Telematics systems gather
data including: vehicle location, driver behavior, engine diagnostics,
vehicle activity, and visualize this data on software platforms that help
昀氀 eet operators manage their resources or in our case, share your personal
driving habits to customize your auto insurance plan.
Telematics technology will continue to revolutionize the insurance
landscape, providing unprecedented transparency and personalization.
The little device in your car that quietly records your speed, braking
patterns, and driving hours is a beacon of a new era where fairness
takes the front seat. Of course, this too, can work in reverse if you are
not a responsible driver.
Next we have the “Internet of Things” (IoT) and how it will impact
auto insurance models. With everything becoming SMART driven,
you can run your whole home with Samsung brands directly from
your phone, and of course, there are several others that include this
level of technical advancement. Start the oven or check the fridge to
see if you have enough milk, while you’re in the grocery store! Let’s
add that capability to your automobile! Yes, it too has many SMART
options like speed regulation, connectivity with your mobile phone,
the ability to dial someone else by verbally requesting it to - all of
these things to make our lives easier and better.
We are in the era right now, where your car is not just a vehicle, but
a hub of interconnected intelligence, thanks to the Internet of Things
(IoT). This isn’t just data for data’s sake. It’s the heartbeat of a new insurance
model where the safer you drive, the less you pay. It’s the difference
between a 昀椀 xed premium and a 昀氀 exible one that rewards you
for every trip where you’ve braked responsibly, accelerated smoothly,
and navigated with care.
IoT is empowering insurers to move away from the archaic ‘onesize-
昀椀 ts-all’ approach and toward tailor-made policies that re 昀氀 ect the
unique risk pro 昀椀 le of each driver.
The landscape of auto insurance is undergoing a profound transformation
driven by technological advancements. From telematics offering
bespoke premium calculations to AI-enhanced ef 昀椀 ciency in
claims processing and the 昀氀 exibility of on-demand insurance, these
innovations are shaping a new era of auto insurance that is more personalized,
ef 昀椀 cient, and adaptable than ever.

As the famous adage goes, there are only two certainties in life: Death and Taxes. We
昀椀 nd ourselves in an eternal battle between the inevitabilities of Father Time and Uncle
Sam. Yet, in this ongoing struggle, it is time for a transformation. No longer satis 昀椀 ed
with merely being taxpayers, it is time to elevate ourselves to the status of tax-players.
In this article, we enter the arsenal of Father Time to explore four powerful strategies:
Income Deferral, Loss Harvesting, Deduction Optimization, and Retirement Savings
Maximization. These strategies allow tax-players to weaponize time against Uncle
Sam's tax demands. Below we touch on some tactics and techniques that enable individuals
to navigate the complexities of the tax code while achieving 昀椀 nancial success.
1. Income Deferral: Income deferral strategies involve postponing taxable income
to future years. This can be achieved by delaying the sale of appreciated assets, negotiating
with employers to defer bonuses, or opting for installment sales. By deferring
income, taxpayers can lower current tax liabilities and potentially defer taxation to
years with lower tax rates.
2. Loss Harvesting: Loss harvesting entails realizing investment losses to offset taxable
gains. Investors can sell securities at a loss to reduce overall tax obligations and
free up capital for investments that better align with portfolio goals. If a large capital
gain is expected in a certain year, it may be a good time to analyze underperforming
investments for loss harvesting opportunities. If losses exceed capital gain, they can
then be used to offset ordinary income, but only up to Uncle Sam’s loss limitation
of $3,000 annually. When taking strategic losses, please note the wash-sale rule that
disallows losses on the sale of a security if the same or substantially similar security is
repurchased within 30 days.
3. Deduction Optimization: Deduction optimization involves strategically timing
deductible expenses to maximize tax savings. Taxpayers can "bunch" deductible expenses
such as charitable contributions and property taxes into speci 昀椀 c years to itemize
deductions and increase tax ef 昀椀 ciency. With consideration of standard deduction
thresholds, deduction limitations, and timing coordination, you may 昀椀 nally get to see
the tax savings from your charitable contributions and other deductible expenses.
4. Retirement Savings Maximization: Retirement savings maximization involves
strategically allocating funds across tax-advantaged accounts like 401(k)s, Traditional
IRAs, and Roth IRAs to capitalize on employer matches and tax bene 昀椀 ts. Employing
strategic rollovers, such as transferring funds from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA,
could potentially offer tax savings by advancing the tax liability to the current tax
period, and allowing for tax-free distributions upon retirement. To stay proactive in
retirement, it is recommended to conduct periodic portfolio reviews ensuring tax ef-
昀椀 ciency and contribute early and often for the full bene 昀椀 t of compound interest.
Implementing these four strategies empowers taxpayers to proactively shape their 昀椀 -
nancial destinies, gain control over their tax situations, and achieve long-term 昀椀 nancial
success as a well-rounded tax-player.
If you would like to explore these strategies further and tailor them to 昀椀 t your unique
昀椀 nancial circumstances, I'm just a message or phone call away. Let’s kick start this
journey together and bring our own tax demands to Uncle Sam.

Keeping Your Dog Safe This Summer
By Bob Druckman, Publisher, South Huntsville Neighbors
Summer is almost here! This means a dramatic increase in the risk
of heat-related illness in dogs. With an increase in temperature and
humidity, a constant eye is needed, because the onset of heat stress
is quick with little to no warning. It is important to know the signs
of heat stress, as it could save your pet's life.
What is heat stress? Dogs do not sweat like humans; instead, they
release heat by panting and sweating through their paws and nose.
If they are unable to cool off by releasing heat, internal body temperature
begins to rise.
There are two signs of heat stress in dogs. Symptoms include increased
thirst and increased panting. If heat stress continues for too
long it may progress to heat exhaustion. Symptoms include heavy
panting, weakness, and episodes of collapsing. If no immediate
treatment, heatstroke is likely to develop quickly.
Signs of heatstroke include:
• Change in gum color (bright red or pale)
• Drooling
• Disorientation
• Dullness and collapse
• Increased heart rate and respiratory rate
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Muscle tremors
• Seizures
What to do for heat stress:
• Move your dog to a shaded spot, or air conditioned room
• Offer fresh, cool water VERY small amounts of COOL, never
cold, should be given, ingesting large amounts too quickly can
cause bloating (GVD) which is extremely dangerous.
• Stop all physical activities until their signs resolve
If your dog’s symptoms worsen, and you believe your dog is
experiencing heatstroke, please take immediate steps.
• Begin cooling your dog by wetting down their body with a hose
or bucket, but avoid the face cold water should not be used,
it dilates blood vessels too quickly, that can cause the pet to
go into shock.
• A fan blowing over their damp skin will assist in cooling them
down
• See a veterinarian immediately
• It is not advised to place wet towels over the body as it will trap
the heat that is trying to escape
How to prevent heat stress in dogs:
• Do not leave your dog alone in the car during warm days, even
with windows open. Temperatures can rise to dangerously high
levels in a matter of minutes.
• Avoid exercise on warm and humid days. On a hot day, try limiting
outdoor activity to the early morning or late night hours
after the sun has gone down.
• When outside, opt for shady areas.
• Keep fresh cool water available at all times.
• Certain types of dogs are more sensitive to heat – especially
obese dogs and brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, like pugs
and bulldogs. Use extreme caution when these dogs are exposed
to heat even with a short walk
If you believe your pet is suffering from heatstroke, contact Apollo
Pet Hospital and Resort immediately.

H I S T O R I C A L F U N FAC TS
By Amanda Griffin
From daring expeditions and monumental
achievements to a deadly sticky mess, the
month of May has borne some outstanding
moments that have indelibly marked the fabric
of North American history and culture.
The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) was founded
in England on May 2, 1670. This fur trading company
played a significant role in the exploration and
development of Canada, particularly in the regions
surrounding Hudson Bay. The company's activities
helped shape early Canadian history and laid the
groundwork for British colonization in the area.
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, along
with their Corps of Discovery, departed from St.
Louis, Missouri on May 14, 1804, on an expedition
to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory
and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. The Lewis
and Clark Expedition lasted over two years
and covered thousands of miles, significantly
expanding knowledge of the American West.
The First Transcontinental Railroad was
completed on May 10, 1869. The ceremonial
“golden spike” was driven at Promontory Summit
in Utah officially connecting the Central Pacific
and Union Pacific Railroads. It marked a significant
milestone in United States history, facilitating
transportation and commerce across the continent
and accelerating the westward expansion.
The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP),
which later became the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police (RCMP), was officially established by the
Canadian government May 15, 1873. This iconic law
enforcement agency was tasked with maintaining law
and order in Canada’s western territories. It played
a crucial role in the settlement of the Canadian West
and the enforcement of Canadian sovereignty.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was completed
May 24, 1883. The last spike of the transcontinental
railway was driven at Craigellachie, British Columbia,
connecting Canada from coast to coast. This
monumental achievement in Canadian history facilitated
transportation and trade across the vast expanse
of the country and helped promote national unity.
Lewis & Clark
The United States Supreme Court issued its
historical ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson on May 18,
1896. This landmark case established the "separate
but equal" doctrine, upholding racial segregation
laws, particularly in public facilities such as schools
and transportation. The decision had profound
implications for civil rights in the United States until it
was overturned by Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
On January 15, 1919, a massive storage tank
containing over 2 million gallons of molasses
burst in Boston, Massachusetts. The explosion
killed 21 people and led to a devastating flood
of molasses rushing through the streets at
speeds of up to 35 mph (56 km/h), destroying
most everything in its path, including buildings.
The “Great Molasses Flood” remains one of the
strangest disasters in United States history.
The Winnipeg General Strike began May 29,
1919. Approximately 30,000 workers walked off the
job demanding better wages, improved working
conditions, and the right to collective bargaining.
Lasting for six weeks, the strike was one of the
most significant labor disputes in Canadian history.
Although the strike ultimately ended without achieving
its primary goals, it still had a profound impact on
Canadian labor relations and social reforms.
The original "Star Wars" film (later retitled "Star
Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope") was released in
theaters across the United States on May 25, 1977.
Directed by George Lucas, the film revolutionized
the science fiction genre, became a cultural
phenomenon, and spawned a vast franchise that
includes films, television series, books, merchandise,
and a pop culture that’s still going strong today.

Meet Brian Tran, Sales Consultant
Mercedes-Benz of Huntsville
By Bob Druckman, Publisher South Huntsville Neighbors
Brian is a 28 year veteran of automotive sales. He hails from Boston,
MA and came to Huntsville for an opportunity but found that
the allure of the auto sales business was too strong to resist. While
in Boston, Brian sold Mercedes-Benz for 9 years so his expertise in
all things Mercedes is unparalleled. He loves the interaction with his
clients, as he says, “I am not a desk person, I really like to get out
there and I am highly motivated to do that”. Brian is also bi-lingual
(Vietnamese and English).
He and his wife Jessica have 3 grown children ranging in ages 22-25.
Brian’s love for all things Mercedes comes from a unique perspective,
“About 10 years ago, I was in an accident and I walked away
with just 2 scratches. The safety of the vehicle clearly made a difference
in my life.”
Brian will also discuss with his clients that there is just something
about a Mercedes. “It’s all about the little things, the ride, the safety,
the extras, the sound and the feel of the vehicle that makes Mercedes
– Benz unique.
When I asked Brian about his favorite Mercedes his answer was
instantaneous, “The GLE, I drive one so I am a little partial, but it’s
easy to get in and out of, plenty of height clearance and plenty of
room. It’s just a really comfortable vehicle”.
Among Brian’s many skills and knowledge base, is his view of the
sales process stands out the most. “My job is to guide the client
through the process. What vehicle will 昀椀 t their needs? We discuss,
driving habits, miles driven etc. That allows me to 昀椀 nd a Mercedes
that will be perfect for them.”
Brian’s message to the readers of South Huntsville Neighbors is
quite simple: I am always willing to make sure that the client has
every opportunity to drive that Mercedes-Benz that they have always
wanted.
