I would like to welcome you to the first
International Choir Competition in Phnom
Penh, Cambodia.
It is said that here in Phnom Penh, the
power of music and the famous warmth of
the Cambodian smile can come together in
harmony and unison. I wish you this wonderful
combination of great art and a good attitude
towards life for the premiere of our choir
festival.
The first International Choir Competition in
Phnom Penh is another milestone for the
globally active organizers at INTERKULTUR,
who have already been able to bring together
thousands of choirs of all kinds in the most
attractive places on earth to sing together
under the motto "Singing together brings
nations together". We are very happy that
Cambodia has joined the list of host countries
for our events and wish our new project
every success, which represents a significant
milestone in the evolution of choral singing in
Cambodia.even if choral singing still has to be
properly discovered here.
Phnom Penh, with its diverse concert
possibilities and historical wealth, has the
best opportunities to present itself to choirs
from all over the world as an impressive
festival venue.

INTERKULTUR & All Dreams Cambodia, for
their dedication to environmental sustainability.
It is a proud moment for us to host this
prestigious international event in our beautiful
city.
I am particularly pleased to acknowledge that
this event is pioneering in its commitment
to environmental sustainability. For the first
time, the carbon footprint of the participants
will be calculated and a significant portion of
it will be offset. This event marks a significant
milestone as the first international event in
Cambodia to calculate and compensate its
carbon footprint.
This will be achieved by purchasing Gold
Standard carbon credits from Keo Seima
Wildlife Sanctuary through Everland.
In addition, we are taking an important
step towards reducing ocean pollution by
purchasing plastic credits from TonToTon to
facilitate the collection and recovery of nonrecyclable
plastic transported by the oceans.
These initiatives not only highlight the
importance of preserving our natural heritage
but also set a commendable example for
future events. Your participation in this event
not only contributes to the rich cultural
exchange through music but also supports
vital environmental conservation efforts.

30 years of success: Since 1988 INTERKULTUR, founded by Günter Titsch, is the world’s leading
organizer of international choir competitions and festivals. The event series has meanwhile become
known throughout the world for its high artistic and organizational standards. INTERKUL-
TUR is a concept for choirs all over the world and their excitement about its competitions and
festivals is constantly growing.
Since more than 30 years singers and choirs from all over the world have been celebrating international
choral music with INTERKULTUR in different cities and on different continents. Whether
the Palau de la Música in Barcelona or the Brucknerhaus Linz, whether dream destinations in
South Africa or Vietnam; wherever they go, participants will experience a peaceful, world-spanning
festival of singing and intercultural choral music on a high artistic level. Friendship Concerts
and joint singing events complete the great emotional impact of INTERKULTUR’s international
choral meetings.
INTERKULTUR unites nations. In 2004 and 2006 – following long negotiations – the organization
was able to bring choirs from North and South Korea together on stage. Also choirs from countries
like Israel and Iran keep coming together at the choir festivals and light a beacon of peace
in Friendship Concerts.
Participation is the highest honor. INTERKULTUR´s biggest success to date was to bring the
antique Olympic idea to the choral community. The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz, Austria was the
beginning of a Choir Olympic movement, which goes around the world until today: Its story of
success continues with subsequent events in Busan, Republic of Korea in 2002 and Bremen, Germany
in 2004, and as of 2006 under the name “World Choir Games” in Xiamen, China; Graz, Austria
in 2008; Shaoxing, China in 2010; Cincinnati, USA in 2012; Riga, Latvia in 2014 and the Winter
Olympics City of Sochi, Russia in 2016. The 10 th anniversary edition of the World Choir Games in
2018 happened on African soil for the first time: Tshwane in South Africa attracted more than 300
choirs and more than 16,000 participants in July 2018. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic
the 11 th edition of the World Choir Games hosted by the cities of Antwerp and Ghent in Belgium
had to be postponed from July 2020 to the fall 2021. For the first time in the event’s history these
Games took place as a hybrid event with live competitions in Flanders and an additional Virtual
Competitions part. The 12 th edition of the event invited choirs from around the world to Gangneung,
Republic of Korea in summer 2023. The 13 th World Choir Games will happen on a new
continent again: Auckland in New Zealand welcomes international singers in July 2024.

Since 2007 INTERKULTUR has been transferring the idea of the World Choir Games also to different
continents: The Asia Pacific Choir Games took place for the 4 th time already in October 2017,
and in 2025 the first African Asia Pacific Choir Games will be held on the dream island Mauritius.
In 2013 the European Choir Games premiered in Graz, Austria. Subsequent editions of the
event were held in Magdeburg, Germany (2015), in Latvian capital Riga (2017) and in the Swedish
cities of Gothenburg (2019) and Norrköping (2023), along with the Grand Prix of Nations, which
addresses international top choirs. The next edition of the European Choir Games will happen in
Aarhus, Denmark in the summer of 2025.
The Idea
INTERKULTUR has become the symbol for a unique artistic idea: In comparison to traditional
meritorious choir competitions that only invite international elite choirs to take part, the INTER-
KULTUR competitions are open to all non-professional choirs. Choirs from all over the world,
interested in gaining international festival and competition experience, can compete according
to their level of artistic achievement. INTERKULTUR has opened a door to new impulses and
perspectives for the national and international choral movement.
The Competitions
There are various categories for all types and levels of choirs in different degrees of difficulty,
with or without compulsory pieces. The competitions offer good, competitive conditions, valuable,
artistic contacts, various workshops and seminars, as well as practice opportunities with international
performers. More than 200 experts and leading choirmasters from all over the world
guarantee a high level of expertise in all INTERKULTUR events.
Evaluation System
The jury awards Bronze, Silver, and Gold Diplomas on 10 levels at INTERKULTUR competitions
according to the MUSICA MUNDI ® evaluation system (30-points-system); and Bronze, Silver
and Gold Medals at the World Choir Games, the Asia Pacific Choir Games, the European Choir
Games and the Grand Prix of Nations according to the World Choir Games evaluation system
(100-points-system). In each category, a Winner or Champion is determined and outstanding
achievements are honored with Special Prizes. In some competitions there is a Grand Prize
Competition of the best choirs selected by the international jury which determines the overall
winner of the competition.

The Pedagogical Concept
INTERKULTUR events are not only competitions and international choir festivals, but also serve
as professional development such as providing feedback from various pedagogical offerings. In
Evaluation Performances or Individual Coachings, choirs have the chance to work with international
jury members and gain advice on their current level of achievement, receive proficient
pedagogical and artistic information and obtain suggestions as to how to interpret the chosen
piece. The MUSICA MUNDI ® Choir Academy gives new impetus especially to young choir conductors
in China.
Every two years the World Choir Council consisting of currently 146 members representing
96 countries and regions comes together during the World Choir Games to discuss the choral
scenes in their respective home countries. These meetings make an important contribution to
the development of the international choral scene.
Locations of Festivals and Competitions
To date, INTERKULTUR events have taken place in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia,
France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia,
Malta, Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Portugal, Philippines, Republic of
Korea, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. In 2024 INTER-
KULTUR is organizing the first-ever international choir competition in Cambodia and its capital
Phnom Penh.
Many cities have been convinced of the success of INTERKULTUR events and establish regular
choir festivals or apply repeatedly to host more unifying major events.
The Participants
In total, more than 11,000 choirs with more than 460,000 active singers from 109 countries have
taken part in the INTERKULTUR competitions to date. An interesting note is that more than half
of the participants have been children and youth up to 27 years of age and 67% of the participating
choirs are returning ensembles looking forward to new destinations and new choral challenges.
Many of them constantly increase their achievements – from first little successes to a Gold
Medal or the sought-after Champions title.
Means of Support
In accordance with its statutes, INTERKULTUR supports the following activities:
• International music festivals and choir competitions whose goal is to bring together choirs from
different regions of the world and encourage international collaboration through mutual respect,
as well as to contribute to cultural exchange and understanding among nations
• Children and youth choirs even from financially challenged countries
• Non-professional choirs that focus on the growth of youth development
• Young, talented choirmasters, young musicians and singers through the support of scholarship
awards
• Specific sponsorship opportunities

Famous Cambodian hospitality awaits visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia!
Situated at the confluence of three great rivers, the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac, Phnom
Penh is the commercial, political and cultural centre of the Kingdom and home to over two
million of the country's 17 million inhabitants.
It is also the gateway to a wonderful country with a brilliant culture and a population overflowing
with kindness.
From the mythical Angkor temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the north, to the beaches
and paradise islands of the south, via the charming rural provinces and lush jungles, the
Kingdom of Cambodia never ceases to seduce curious visitors.

The Cambodian capital has set about catching up on the backwardness imposed on it by its
history, and adopted a frenetic development mode. Phnom Penh is resolutely anchored in the
21 st century, changing and stretching. The city is booming with skycrapers, new hotels, trendy
restaurants, bars and stores, but still retains a village soul in some areas. From Wat Phnom
where the capital has drawn its roots to Koh Pich, the local "Manhattan", through the old
European quarter dating from the French protectorate, the past is linked to the present and
delivers the contrasts of a metropolis in full evolution.
You can enjoy Phnom Penh from straight boulevards lined with flowering trees to streets
with sidewalks crowded with merchants, in museums that show the kingdom's history, from
fragrant and lively markets to ultramodern shopping malls, from street kitchens to gourmet
restaurants, and on the quays along the river. At sunset, nothing beats a cruise or a drink in a
rooftop bar to get the full picture of this amazing city.

Netherlands
Johan Rooze
Senior Artistic Director
Johan Rooze studied Classic Piano, Choral and Orchestral Conducting at the Utrecht
Conservatory of Music in the Netherlands. He went to the U.S. to study with Phil Mattson,
Michelle Weir and others to specialize in Jazz Piano, Singing and Arranging.
He was founder and Musical Director of the Utrecht University Vocal Group “Dekoor”.
They won The Netherlands Choir Festival, The International Vocal Group Festival and the
“Idols for choir” TV show, “Korenslag” 2007 in the Netherlands.
He was Musical Director of the Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra. With the two student
choirs he made tours all over the world. In 2008 he received the honorary “Zilveren
Penning” (Silver Medal) of the Utrecht University.
He founded the “Dudok-Ensemble” Project Choir and Orchestra, conducted the Bach
Cantata Society in Utrecht and was guest conductor of the National Radio Choir.
He taught Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Choral Conducting and Arranging at the Conservatories
of Rotterdam and Alkmaar in the Netherlands.
In 2008 he moved to Daegu, South Korea, taught Music at Keimyung University and Choir
and Jazz Piano at Yeongnam University in Daegu. He is the Musical Director of the Daegu
Jazz Singers, the Daegu Chamber Choir and Conductor of the Beomeo Cathedral in
Daegu.
Besides his choral work he is very active as a Jazz Pianist and Arranger, and a frequently
asked as guest conductor, lecturer and workshopleader.
Since 2012 he is Artistic Director for the international choral organization INTERKULTUR.

Sweden
Peder Karlsson
Jury Member
Peder Karlsson was born in October 1963 in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied classical
composition, arranging and guitar at The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm,
Sweden, from 1984, and graduated in 1989 with a post-graduate Diploma in vocal group
performance.
As a member of the Swedish a cappella group The Real Group between 1984-2010,
Peder made more than 2000 concerts all over the world, recorded 16 CDs, and did
countless workshops, masterclasses and seminars in many countries. Peder was head
of educational activities in The Real Group Festival in Västerås, Sweden, in 2008 and in
Stockholm, Sweden, 2012.
Between 2011-14, Peder was Musical Director of the XXL vocal group "Perpetuum
Jazzile", Slovenia.
In 2014-17, Peder had a role as a mentor for the leadership team of Perpetuum Jazzile,
at Peder's suggestion.
Since January 2015, Peder teaches innovative choir direction at the Royal Academy of
Music in Aalborg, Denmark, since January 2016 with the title "Honorary Professor".
In his freelance activities, Peder has been involved in many projects as an artistic director,
or a teacher/workshop leader or as a coach/advisor/consultant, in many countries;
Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Slovenia, Finland, Norway, Germany, Belgium, France,
Italy, China, China Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taipei, USA, for example.
Apart from activities within music, Peder is involved with educational and artistic activities
of the non-profit organization End Ecocide Sweden.

Cambodia
Sethisak Khuon
Jury Member
Sethisak Khuon was born during the war time, but as a prodigy child, began singing
in 1981 at the age of 11, soon after the fall of Pol Pot and the genocidal Khmer Rouge
regime. He was soon discovered by the music department at RUFA (Royal University of
Fine Arts, Phnom Penh, Cambodia), where he was originally major in piano and as a child
soloist singing traditional Khmer songs and new compositions.
By 13 he was regularly seen on television and national theaters, performing on various
programs for children.
At 18, Sethisak was chosen among a small group of musicians from RUFA to study at
the prestigious Moscow Tchaikovsky College - Conservatory, where he studied for eight
years.
Originally a student of piano / music theory and composition, Sethisak decided to switch
to voice after a theory professor noticed his incredible talent during a routine technical
exercise. He auditioned for the voice department, and was immediately accepted. Two
years later, Sethisak took 3 rd prize overall at the "Bella Voce" competition, competing
with all of Russia's finest young singers. Amazingly, he also won "Best Russian Vocal
Performance," the first South, Southeast or East Asian ever to do so.
After graduating, Sethisak traveled around the world, from North Korea to Austria,
Rome to Brussels, Paris to Bern, San Francisco to Amsterdam, studying and performing
opera in festivals, recitals and workshops. In 2001 he returned to Phnom Penh, where he
teaches voice privately.
Sadly, few performance opportunities exist for this incredible national treasure. In
2004, an English philanthropist funded Sethisak to mastering his voice for two years in
"Accademia Verdiana" in Busseto, Italy, with the Legendary Italian Tenor Maestro Carlo
Bergonzi.

Thailand
Pawasut Piriyapongrat
Jury Member
Pawasut Jodi Piriyapongrat earned her bachelor's degree in Music Education with honors
from Chulalongkorn University; Master of Music in Church Music; and Doctor of Musical
Arts in Choral Music from the University of Southern California, where she studied choral
conducting with the late Dr. William Dehning.
Through her extensive choral experiences, including conducting Thai Youth Choir (2007-
2009) and Chulalongkorn University Concert Choir (2007-present), and many collaborative
works of the latter with professional Thai and international orchestras, Pawasut has
earned her recognition as Thailand’s leading choral conductor, guest conductor, clinician,
adjudicator, and choral educator with national and international engagements including
in China, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and USA. She
dedicates much time and energy in bettering choral standards in Thailand through
her involvement with Thailand Ministry of Education and initiatives with Chulalongkorn
University that include various workshops, an annual choral festival, and choral camps
for university choirs in Thailand. Some of her initiatives were in collaboration with
American Choral Directors Association.
She is a full-time faculty member of Music Education Department, Faculty of Education,
Chulalongkorn University, and serves as President of Thailand Choral Conductors
Association.

Fun, flow and focus
with Peder Karlsson
This workshop is for choir leaders and choir singers!
In a cappella music, all the sounds are made by singers. Without the voice sounds of singers,
there is no music to be heard. The main purpose of this workshop is to provide choir leaders
and choir singers with an overview of how to practice collectively and individually to develop
individual and collective skills for singing together.
You will have a unique opportunity to try out exercises for singers’ understanding of rhythm,
intonation and blending, developed since many years by Peder Karlsson himself.
Peder will also give an overview of
singer-centered methodology, with a focus
on questions such as:
- How can choir leaders inspire a playful
approach to rehearsals?
- How can singers find the right note pitch
and rhythm?
- How can singers develop their abilities to
make sounds relevant to the musical
styles performed by their choir?

Chaktomuk Theater
Chaktomuk Theater, also known as Chaktomuk Conference Hall, is a renowned cultural
and architectural landmark in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This iconic venue hosts a variety of
performances, conferences, and cultural events, standing out for its unique design and significant
role in Cambodia's cultural heritage.
Inaugurated in 1961, Chaktomuk Theater is one of the masterpieces of the esteemed Cambodian
architect Vann Molyvann. The name "Chaktomuk," meaning "four faces" in Khmer, symbolizes
the confluence of four rivers in Phnom Penh. This concept is elegantly mirrored in the theater’s
fan-shaped design, which combines traditional Khmer architecture with modernist elements.
The theater underwent extensive renovations in the late 1990s, with the work completed in 2000
to preserve its architectural beauty and modernize its facilities. Today, Chaktomuk Theater offers
seating for approximately 600 people, ensuring excellent views and acoustics from every seat.
Chaktomuk Theater continues to be a vital venue for cultural enrichment in Cambodia, celebrating
both traditional and contemporary arts.
