Princess Rapunzel is shown here smiling and talking with a group of young
princesses at the Royal Princess Party held at Groveport Town Hall on April 20.
There were 52 princesses in attendance plus their adult chaperones. Rapunzel
conducted princess training where the young princesses learned to say please,
thank you, and you’re welcome (just like princesses do). Each girl was crowned a
princess by Rapunzel and together they sang a song. Other activities included:
nail painting, face painting, ice cream sundaes, snacks, and three crafts - a wand
to decorate, making Rapunzel’s tower, and a Pascal craft (a chameleon character
from the Disney film “Tangled,” which is about Rapunzel).
City of Groveport officials recently presented
Groveport Madison Schools with an
income tax revenue sharing check for $1.1
million.
“We started this partnership between
the Groveport community and Groveport
Madison Schools many years ago,”
Groveport Mayor Lance Westcamp stated
previously. “It’s a great partnership and it
helps the schools. Our community is a
great place to live and our schools help us
to succeed.”
According to Groveport Finance
Director Jason Carr, city has shared $24.2
million in income tax revenue with the
school district since the program began in
1999.
Carr said the money is generated from
income tax withholdings for companies
that may operate within the city’s
Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) #1-
5 and have active real estate tax abatements.
He said the city issues income tax revenue
sharing checks to Groveport Madison
Schools once per year.
Per the Ohio Department of
Development, a CRA is “an economic development
tool administered by municipal
and county government that provides real
property tax exemptions for property owners
who renovate existing or construct new
buildings. Community Reinvestment
Areas are areas of land in which property
owners can receive tax incentives for
investing in real property improvements.”
Groveport City Administrator B.J. King
Transit buses purchase
Groveport City Council authorized City
Administrator B.J. King to enter into
agreements to purchase three transit
buses for the city’s transportation department
for an estimated total cost of
$240,000 to $250,000.
Currently, the city has two, 2016 model
transit buses with mileage between
130,000 to 140,000 miles. A third existing
transit bus is a 2019 model with about
60,000 miles on it.
“They are getting older and have had a
lot of use,” said King of the transit buses.
said the revenue sharing agreement is a
necessary partnership to keep Groveport
competitive in the economic development
arena.
“Any developer of large scale projects
will request a tax abatement,” said King.
“Without being able to provide an abatement,
Groveport would be at a severe disadvantage.
In order to grant a tax abatement,
the city and the school district must
approve. Additionally, the sharing agreement
assures that the district continues to
receive money, via income tax sharing,
during the abatement period. Once the
abatement expires, the school begins to collect
100 percent of the property tax that
they are due. Essentially, to secure economic
development projects, the city and
schools must be in agreement of the need
for an abatement to remain competitive.”
Groveport Madison Schools
Communications Director Ty Debevoise
said the money from the income tax revenue
sharing check from the city will go
directly into Groveport Madison Schools’
general fund.
“The money we received through the
income tax revenue sharing allows those
funds to go into our district’s general fund
for a more short-term or immediate
access,” said Debevoise. “This is made possible
from the newly created jobs by way of
a city’s tax abatement. As per a typical tax
abatement, a school district will forgo the
property taxes (a main source of revenue)
in exchange for the income taxes from new
jobs associated with a new building/business
coming to the area.”
Shelterhouse project moves ahead
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Planning is progressing on the
city of Groveport and the Groveport
Madison High School’s construction
trades program’s collaboration to
build a shelterhouse in Cruiser Park.
According to Groveport Building
Official Mike Poirier, will be 16x20
feet in size and be located just west
of the Cruiser Park (4677 Bixby
Road) parking lot. The shelterhouse
will be a wooden structure on a concrete
pad.
“We’re waiting for the school district’s
formal application for the project
for more details,” said Poirier,
who said building, zoning, and floodplain
must process first and be
approved before construction can
commence.
He added the permits are good for
six months.
The city will fund the materials
and the students in Groveport
Madison High School’s construction
trades program will do the design and
construction work.
“We’re waiting a cost proposal
from the school district for materials,” said Groveport
City Administrator B.J. King.
A private company could donate the concrete for the
project.
According to Groveport Madison Schools Director of
Business Operations Dave Hausmann work on the
shelterhouse is tentatively expected to begin in August
or September. The completion date is to be determined.
“It’s a great opportunity for the students to learn
about plans, permitting, construction and inspections,”
said Hausmann.
“This is a volunteer effort by the students,” added
King. “It is a learning experience for them and a source
of pride for them in the community. They are learning
valuable skills in construction and learning about the
permit process, which will help them in their future
Developers have reintroduced plans to build a
212,000 square foot freezer/cold storage facility on 18.6
acres on the north side of Groveport Road just west of
Saltzgaber Road.
The request had been withdrawn earlier this year
by the applicant so some details could be worked out.
The proposed development also includes a 1.86
acre outparcel that could be marketed for other future
use to be determined.
“Clous Road Partners and Sansone Group are committed
to a successful project in Groveport,” wrote
Clous Road Partners Director Max Davis in an April
10 letter to the city of Groveport.
The letter states the developers expect to invest $50
million to construct the freezer and cold storage warehouse
and estimate that this development could support
“as many 100 employees with an annual payroll of
approximately $5.6 million.”
When the proposal was first brought forth last year,
representatives said the facility could handle items
High School’s construction
trades program at work on a project.
occupations. This project will teach
them about all the processes
involved in projects like these.”
When asked if the city and the
high school construction trades program
could work on more projects
together in the future, King said,
“The hope is, ‘yes.’ We can get together
at the beginning of the school year
and identify what can be built and
talk it through.”
Construction trades program
The Groveport Madison High
School construction trades program,
which began in 2018, prepares students
for careers in designing, planning,
managing, building, and maintaining
commercial, industrial and
residential structures and infrastructures.
Students in the program
may continue into registered apprenticeship
or traditional post-secondary
programs.
The students in the construction
trades program have built several
structures, including: the new visitors’
concession stand at Cruiser
Stadium at Groveport Madison High
School; a concession stand for the
high school Cruiser baseball field; “cubbies” created in
the dugouts of the Cruiser softball program where
players can store batting helmets, batting gloves and
field gloves; a playhouse for Little Cruisers Preschool;
a deck at the softball concession stand; Adirondack
chairs; garden sheds; a project for the Groveport
Madison Area Community Choir; 10x10 barn sheds;
raised planters; birdhouses that were donated to the
wildlife department; projects at the high school for
classrooms; and personal projects students keep.
According to construction trades program instructor
Chad Gibbs, jobs in the construction fields are in
demand. Companies offer paid apprenticeship programs
and paid post education.
He said companies pay high dollars for students
skilled in the trades fields.
Cold storage facility back on track
such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and nutritional
products. It would use freon as its cooling agent.
On April 22, Groveport City Council heard the first
reading of an ordinance to rezone the location from
rural to planned industrial park for the project.
Council will consider this legislation further at upcoming
meetings.
The Groveport Road corridor west of State Route
317 is currently a mix of warehouses, small businesses,
churches, and residences.
A couple of years ago, the city contracted with the
IBI Group to create a Groveport Road Corridor Study
to review west Groveport Road between Groveport and
Obetz from State Route 317 to Bixby Road. The report
noted that the western portion of the road located in
Obetz is primarily residential while the eastern portion
located in Groveport is mostly commercial/industrial.
The study also stated the average daily traffic
count for west Groveport Road in 2020 was 11,000 to
12,000 vehicles, but that number will rise by 55 percent
to 17,000 by 2040.

Resident offers another
idea for KidSpace
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Groveport City Council recently unanimously
voted to approve the demolition of
Crooked Alley KidSpace later this year to
make room for more downtown parking,
but at council’s April 22 meeting, a resident
floated another idea.
Groveport resident Diana Kurey proposed
that city officials consider building a
new, smaller community center on the
KidSpace site after it is torn down.
“The need for it is inescapable,” said
Kurey. “KidSpace is used beyond just kids’
programs. It is also used for adult programs,
blood drives, and as a voting location.
KidSpace is a multi-use building.”
Kurey said moving the existing
KidSpace programs to the second floor of
the Rarey’s Port building above Delaney’s
would not solve the parking issues in the
downtown area. She said what the city
thinks will alleviates parking congestion in
the municipal parking lot along Wirt Road
will just create a parking problem in the
parking lot by Delaney’s and Ace
Hardware.
“People attending KidSpace programs
in the space above Delaney’s will be there
for long periods of time and that takes
parking spaces away from paying customers
at Delaney’s, Lissy Bee’s, and Ace
Hardware,” said Kurey.
Council members did not respond publicly
at the meeting to Kurey’s idea.
Background
Council had to decide between demolishing
the KidSpace building — at an estimated
cost of $30,000 — or repairing it at
an approximate cost of $800,000.
According to Groveport Public Services
Director Brian Strayer, the existing
KidSpace building needs the following: a
new roof, new electrical panel, upgraded
HVAC, exterior brick tuck pointing,
repairs to a “significant” crack on the east
side of the building, repairs to the main
floor which has settled and cracked, window
replacements, repairs to rusted window
transoms, new gutters, interior and
exterior painting, and elimination of mold.
The 3,100 square foot KidSpace building,
located at 630 Wirt Road, was built in
1955 and was originally the Groveport
Municipal Building for many years and
later was home to the senior center.
KidSpace moved into the building in the
early 2000s after the senior center moved
to the Groveport Recreation Center.
City officials said demolishing the building
allows for the creation of expanded
public parking in the downtown area. City
Administrator B.J. King said several
downtown area businesses have expressed
a need for more public parking in the city.
Currently the downtown public parking
lots south of Main Street along Wirt Road
are often full.
“KidSpace is a multi-use building.”
- Diana Kurey
Groveport resident
Another downtown public parking lot
with about 99 spaces is located on the
north side of Main Street near Ace
Hardware and Delaney’s.
On April 8, council approved two pieces
of legislation to address the situation. One
authorizes King to solicit bids and contract
for the re-alignment and expansion of the
existing municipal parking lot situated
along Wirt Road, Crooked Alley, and
Cherry Street.
Groveport City Engineer Steve Farst
said this parking expansion will increase
the parking capacity in the lot to approximately
100 to 112 spaces from the current
60 spaces.
“The plan associated with this project
includes the demolition of KidSpace and
the closure of a portion of Cherry Street to
combine these properties with the existing
municipal parking lot property,” said King,
who added there will be curb cuts on the
newly designed parking lot to access Wirt
Road.
The second ordinance authorizes King
to contract with Leukco Construction for
the buildout of the second floor of the
Rarey’s Port building on Main Street
(above Delaney’s Diner).
“That space will be used as the new
location of KidSpace activities as well as
conference room space,” said King, who
added work on the buildout of the second
floor of the Rarey’s Port building could
begin in three months and take an estimated
five months to complete.
King said the KidSpace building will not
close until after the Rarey’s Port building
project is completed and ready for
KidSpace activities.
Construction of the new parking lot will
not begin until the KidSpace building is
demolished.
KidSpace voting location
Residents who normally cast their votes
at the polling place in KidSpace have
expressed concerns about where they will
be able to vote on Election Day when
KidSpace is demolished.
King said city officials are talking with
the Franklin County Board of Elections
regarding the issue and that a new voting
location will be found.
“No one will be left without a place to
vote,” said King. “Every eligible voter will
be able to vote.”
Be a beekeeper
The Fairfield County Beekeepers
Association recently marked its fifth
anniversary with a new meeting place and
full Beginner Beekeeping classes.
FCBA formed in 2019 to give beekeepers
in or near Fairfield County a place to mingle
with other beekeepers, learn about best
management practices, provide outreach
to the community about honey bees and
the environment, and attract and train
new beekeepers. When the club was told
last November that it needed to find a new
meeting place, the Central Ohio Coon
Hunters Club, located on Coonpath Road,
offered their club house as a meeting place
and a big open field for FCBA’s apiary. The
Coon Hunters Club does conservation projects
and plan to create an insect-friendly
field of wildflowers. They were hoping to
attract some bees and other pollinators to
their property.
Each November, news about the FCBA
Beginner Beekeeping Scholarship goes out
to local schools, 4-H and agriculture
groups and also to military veterans. The
club offers scholarships covering a class,
hives and bees, plus year-long mentoring
for the scholarship recipients.
Then in early spring, before the bees
come out of their winter clusters, FCBA
offers day-long educational trainings about
how to begin beekeeping. The club helps
newcomers get their woodenware hives and
order bees. Once the warm spring weather
comes, the club offers twice monthly training
in their training bee yard (apiary) for
the new beekeepers. Experienced mentors
are also assigned to those “NewBees” that
want them.
The club meets monthly, providing an
educational speaker at each meeting, a
chance to win a bee related door prize (all
donated) and time to hang out and talk
bees with other beekeepers. FCBA member
volunteers do many outreach activities,
like presentations for adult or young people’s
groups and provide a huge display of
hands-on artifacts about bees, activities for
kids and a live observation hive at many
festivals and fairs around Fairfield County.
The club had a honey bee booth at the
Earth Day Fair in Rising Park in April and
will do the same at Hocking County Ag
Days at the Hoking County Fairgrounds,
May 11 and 12. FCBA will have a live
demonstration in the bee yard and a huge
booth of hands-on artifacts for the Central
Oho Coon Hunters Family Day in June.
FCBA also sells raw, local honey from its
members.
FCBA meets every month except
December on the third Tuesday , at 7 p.m.
The training bee yard is scheduled to meet
at the club apiary on the property, at 6
p.m. on the Tuesday of the club meeting.
There is typically another training yard
demonstration on another Tuesday in the
month, at 6p.m. Information about scheduled
bee yard dates are announced on the
group’s Facebook page.
Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting
to learn more. Information can also be
found on the club website at fairfieldcountybeekeepers.org
and on their Facebook
page, www.facebook.com/groups/fairfieldcountybeekeepers.org.
Yearly membership
in the club is $15 for a single and $25 for a
family One can join online at the Square
store, tinyurl.com/fcbashop.
You don’t have to be a beekeeper to join
— just love bees and want to learn about
them.
“Last year the tour featured only garden club member gardens,”
said Lacy Cooper, president of the Groveport Garden Club.
“However, the tour is not for members only. Some wonderful gardens
in Groveport belong to residents who aren’t members of the
garden club and we'd love to include them as part of the tour, too.”
Gardeners can contact groveportgardenclub@gmail.com for
additional details on participating as a tour stop or for information
on how to get tickets.
Tour tickets will also be available for in-person pick-up at
Groveport Town Hall, Groveport Recreation Center, and the
Groveport Senior Center beginning June 11.
•The Groveport Garden Club is also participating in a few gardening
activities around the city.
“We will be maintaining the herb garden at the Nature Center
(log house) at Heritage Park,” said Cooper. “The herb garden will
feature both culinary and medicinal herbs commonly grown and
used in the Ohio River Valley in the early 1800s and when the
house was built. We’ve also rented a plot at the Groveport
Community Garden where we will grow some produce to donate to
the Groveport Food Pantry.”
The garden club is always looking for active gardeners to help
it grow.
Township extends electric rate agreement
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
The Madison Township trustees locked
in an agreement that should save residents
from electric rate increases until May
2026.
The township is moving ahead with an
Electric Master Service Agreement with
Archer Energy, which extends a May 31,
2024 agreement extension from May 31,
2025 through May 31, 2026 at a fixed rate
of $0.066 per KWh.
“We did accept the rates initially two
months ago, but waited to see if they would
go lower,” said Madison Township
Administrator Susan Brobst. “Since then,
rates have gone excessively high.”
The agreement is exclusive of capacity,
which will be a cost pass-through when
established by PJM Interconnect. The
amount is applied to all AEP bills, just as
it was done in the past.
“They were able to make some recommendations,”
The Housing Report
Is Out
As Chair of the Senate Select Committee on
Housing, I am pleased to announce the release of
our official Housing Report. As of April 17, the
digital copy of our comprehensive 94-page
report is now available for download on the
Senate's website in PDF format under the meetings
tab.
The Senate Select Committee on Housing (SSCH)
was commissioned by Sen. President Matt Huffman
to address Ohio's housing challenges. Since
its inception in August 2023, the SSCH has
conducted extensive research, including 12 livestreamed
meetings across Ohio, hearing over 35
hours of testimony from more than 200
witnesses. Through this process, we gained
valuable insights into Ohio's housing landscape
and the challenges it faces.
The report represents the voices of Ohioans
statewide and offers a framework for future
housing policy discussions. It highlights the
complexity of Ohio's housing challenges, ranging
from economic, social and policy factors and how
it impacts both urban and rural areas and the
need for affordable housing solutions across the
state. Our recommendations, outlined in the
report, emphasize a multifaceted approach to
address Ohio's housing challenges.
These include strategies to increase the supply of
available, affordable and accessible homes. Moreover,
the report underscores the importance of
bipartisan collaboration, recognizing that housing
affordability is a humanitarian issue that transcends
political divides. I extend my gratitude to
all who contributed to this endeavor, including
fellow Senators, legislative aides, witnesses,
stakeholders, and constituents.
The report's executive summary and recommendations
are available starting on page 84, highlighting
key initiatives such as the Ohio Housing
Dashboard, Ohio Housing Toolkit, Third Party
Reviewer Services, Ohio Housing Accelerator,
Ohio YIMBY Campaign, and Ohio Housing Capacity
Building Grant Fund.
Results Matter, so be sure to read the recommendations
in the report. Stay connected to my office by
subscribing to the website for alerts and notifications.
including paraprofessionals, bus
drivers, aides, and custodians. The partner
schools are prepared to offer qualified candidates
positions on the spot.
“The partner schools are looking for
dedicated individuals who are passionate
about making a difference in the lives of
students,” said Dr. Chris Green, Director of
Diversity, Engagement, and Human
Capital at Groveport Madison Schools.
“Working at a school offers a desirable
schedule, excellent benefits, and the opportunity
to contribute significantly to our
community.”
No teaching license is required for these
positions. Interested individuals are
encouraged to attend the combined job fair
to learn more about the available positions
and the benefits of working in education.
Arbor Day in Groveport
The city of Groveport celebrated Arbor Day on April 26 by planting a tree at
Glendening Elementary and at Groveport Elementary. Pictured here is Mayor
Lance Westcamp as he reads the Arbor Day proclamation to Groveport
Elementary students. The proclamation, emphasized the significance of trees in
sustaining our environment and enriching lives. The Groveport Parks Department
planted a White Oak at Glendening and a Pacific Brilliance Pin Oak for Groveport
Elementary (the tree was planted at nearby Middle School Central).
PRIDE Soccer
celebrates 20 years
PRIDE Soccer Club (PSC) is thrilled to be celebrating
20 years of developing soccer players
and people! PSC was established in 2004 to provide
a more professionally organized, competitive
and developmentally focused youth soccer
club in the Canal Winchester area. Over the last
20 years, PSC has become one of the most successful
and respected clubs in Ohio, developing
teams that have excelled at the State and Regional
levels in addition to producing hundreds of
Collegiate level players. PSC has over 600 players
on 40 different teams, ages 6-18.
How do I register and get more information?
Go to www.pridesoccerclub.com, click
login/register in top right, find 2024-2025 tryouts.
At what age can players join?
Players can join at U7 (2018 birth year) and
play U8.
What is the difference between PRIDE SC and
recreation soccer?
PSC provides a more developmentally
focused program that will better help prepare
players for the next level than a recreation program.
This is accomplished by a professional,
licensed coaching staff in a competitive environment
with 3 times as many training opportunities.
Where are training/games?
PSC trains and hosts home games in Canal
Winchester, Groveport, Ashville and Grove City.
League games and tournaments are mostly in
Central Ohio but can be throughout Ohio depending
on the age and level of the team.

Ohio Victory Gardens
Ohio’s movement to promote urban and
rural gardening is back and bigger than
ever. The Ohio Department of Agriculture
(ODA) and Ohio State University Extension
are partnering once again to encourage
Ohioans to cultivate their own produce.
The popular Ohio Victory Gardens program
is back for its fifth year and due to
high demand, the program is expanding to
include 64 counties. OSU Extension offices
will be handing out the free seed sample
kits to the public to get people planting.
The office in Franklin County began giving
out the sample kits on April 10. The office
is located at 2548 Carmack Road in
Columbus and is open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“We want all Ohioans to experience the
pride of growing their own food,” said ODA
Director Brian Baldridge. “Planting those
seeds, watching that produce grow, and
being able to provide those nutritious foods
for your family is a wonderful opportunity
to be involved in agriculture. We encourage
all folks to plant their own victory garden.”
This year’s program will benefit up to
19,200 Ohioans. Each of the participating
counties will receive 300 sample seed kits
that contain carrot, cucumber, lettuce, and
sunflower seeds.
“Our partnership with ODA on the Ohio
Victory Garden program allows Ohioans to
learn about agriculture and where their
food comes from,” said Dr. Cathann Kress,
vice president of agricultural administration
and dean of The Ohio State
University’s College of Food, Agricultural,
and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). “It
provides a glimpse into the science and
dedication involved by those who work in
the food system every day to bring fresh
produce into grocery stores, farmer’s markets,
and restaurants.”
OSU Extension is the community-based
outreach arm of CFAES, with programming
that addresses agriculture and natural
resources, community development,
family and consumer sciences, and 4-H
youth development. Extension professionals
throughout the state bring people and
ideas together to help CFAES sustain life.
Extension’s educational outreach is
enhanced by more than 3,200 master gardener
volunteers, who support the Ohio
Victory Gardens program by providing gardening
advice, helping with community gardens,
and promoting local food production
among their neighbors throughout the state.
All Ohio Victory Gardens participants will
be eligible to win a free starter gardening
toolkit by completing a short online survey.
Victory Gardens originated during
World War I as an answer to a severe food
shortage at the time. The idea was wildly
successful, growing an army of amateur
gardeners and serving to boost morale and
patriotism. ODA and OSU Extension
revived the effort and are, once again,
encouraging people to plant seeds, realize
the fruits of their labor, and share their
harvest with others if inspired.
This program is funded through a
USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant.
I say this knowing I will sound like a
flower child who just got back from a weeklong
festival out in the desert, but I believe
that music is one of the closest things we
have to magic in this world.
Just think about it for a minute.
How many times have you heard a specific
lyric, note, or song and were immediately
transported back into a particular
period — or a moment — in your life?
For better or worse, music has the ability
to unlock a part of our brain and allow
us to relive that day and experience the
emotions as if it were happening all over
again.
In the new romantic fantasy film, “The
Greatest Hits,” writer and director Ned
Benson takes the occasionally wistful
music-induced jump into the past and
treats it literally, creating a world in which
the lead character can travel back in time
to see their recently deceased partner at
the drop of a needle on a vinyl record. It is
a premise that admittedly sounds rather
corny but the movie mostly works because
it is an earnest exploration of grief, love,
and our efforts to move on after heartbreak.
The film begins with a vivid montage of
long-time partners Harriet (Lucy Boynton)
and her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet)
that captures their most blissful moments
together.
We see them frolicking on the beach
with their sweet and scruffy dog, playing
card games when inclement weather keeps
them inside, spending lazy days snuggled
up on the couch or in bed, and attending
numerous concerts together because they
share a love of music.
This idyllic sequence is swiftly interrupted
by the muffled sound of crunching
metal and then it transitions into a blankfaced
Harriet curled up on the couch alone
in a dimly lit apartment, staring at a bulletin
board with dozens of pictures of her
and Max together in happier times, the
time when he was alive.
Upon closer examination of the material
in the room, we see there is something different
about the bulletin board and the
dimly lit apartment.
Scattered across the floor are dozens of
crates of vinyl records marked ‘tested’ and
‘untested’ and pinned across the bulletin
board are strings and sticky-notes full of
scribbles.
It looks like something a conspiracy theorist
would have when trying to link ideas
together, but we soon discover the reason
for her apparent descent into madness.
During the car accident that took Max’s
life, Harriet was injured and spent six days
in a coma.
The traumatic brain injury she sustained
somehow rewired her synapses and
she can now travel back in time to relive
moments of her relationship with Max —
but only when she hears the specific lyrics,
notes, or songs that are attached to those
memories.
Sounds romantic, right?
Well, not so much.
In the two years
since Max died and
Harriet gained the ability
to time travel, she
has become both obsessive
and reclusive. In
addition to constantly
playing the records
that will allow her to
dip into the past, she
has become obsessed
with the theory that
An ode to the power of music
The Reel Deal
Dedra
Cordle
there are songs out there that could change
his fate.
At the same time, she is terrified to venture
outside of her apartment because
hearing a specific lyric, note or song could
propel her into the past and cause her
harm in the present.
Since she knows her life has become
extremely unhealthy — a fact that her best
friend Morris (Austin Crute) repeatedly
points out to her — she has started to
attend grief support meetings to try to
come to terms with her sorrow and the
guilt associated with her inability to alter
Max’s death.
While there, she meets a kind and sweet
man named David (Justin H. Min) who
tries to help her see that life can be good
again even with all the heartbreak and
tragedies.
Although we know that the budding
relationship between Harriet and David is
doomed from the start, Boynton and Min
have such great chemistry together that it
makes this romantic dramedy even more
bittersweet.
As with most other time traveling
movies, there are a few inconsistencies
with the rules but “The Greatest Hits” does
manage to provide simple explanations of
the mechanisms and how conceivably
Harriet could save Max’s life. Some have
argued that the continued attempts to
alter the past goes against the overarching
message of grief being temporary but I
found that it fits into the mindset of the
lead character.
“The Greatest Hits” is only streaming
on Hulu as of right now — occasionally
physical copies of original films on streaming
platforms will end up in the library system
— but if you ever get the opportunity to
watch this movie, please do.
It has a unique premise, charming and
effective performances and is a serene love
letter to our brain’s relationship with
music.
Fifty years on
Upon graduating from high school, we
do not think about such things as our 50
year class reunion.
Instead, in our youth the thoughts are
of the promise of the future ahead, adventures
to come, and taking one’s place in the
world.
All the while time rolls on relentlessly
until suddenly it is 50 years later and with
it are incorporated the joys and sorrows,
accomplishments and failures, and excitement
and boredom life brings.
Over these years some classmates
remain close and some drift apart as life
presents its choices and distances. But
there always remains within the members
of the same graduating class a little spark
of shared experiences from the time of our
youth in school. So much so that when we
meet up again decades later we easily
reconnect with just a look, a word or two,
and shared memories.
This year my graduating class, the
Groveport Madison High School class of
1974, is celebrating its 50th year of graduation
in two ways - at the annual
Groveport Madison Alumni Banquet in
May and at a class reunion in September.
Class of 1974’s 50th class reunion
The 50th Groveport Madison High
School Class of 1974 Reunion will be held
at The Pointe on Main Street, 1192 Noe
Bixby Road, Columbus, from 6-11 p.m.
Groveport Madison Alumni Banquet
The 130th annual Groveport Madison
Alumni Banquet will be held on May 18 at
5 p.m. (registration at 4:30 p.m.), at
Groveport Madison Middle School Central,
751 Main St., Groveport. This year’s honored
class at the alumni banquet is my
class, the class of 1974, celebrating its 50th
anniversary. Dinners are $25 each.
Reservations must be submitted to
Groveport Madison Alumni Association,
P.O. Box 382, Groveport, OH 43125.
May 11 and will not be accepted after this
date. There are no exceptions. Make checks
payable to the Groveport Madison Alumni
Association.
Also at the alumni banquet, the new
Groveport Madison Alumni Hall of Fame
member will be announced.
The Class of 1974
Now back to the class of 1974. We are
“baby boomers” who came from all around
the sprawling Groveport Madison school
district - Berwick, Edgewater Park, Brice,
Edwards Station, Blacklick Estates,
Groveport, Obetz, the countryside, and
other neighborhoods. We funneled through
six different elementary schools till we
reached junior high where we came together
in the late 1960s to spend seventh and
eighth grades in a new building being constructed
along South Hamilton Road. This
building became the high school in 1970-71
Editor’s Notebook
and remained under
construction the
entire time the class
of 1974 spent there.
It functioned as the
high school until
2018 until it was
demolished to make
way for the current
new high school.
It’s a strange feeling
to outlive your
high school - a school
that was brand new
in our youth and a
structure that seemed
Rick
Palsgrove
so permanent - but we did. The classrooms,
the halls, the cafeteria, the band room, and
the gym, now are all gone, but we’re still
here.
Our old high school on South Hamilton
Road, was never beautiful with its beige
brick and utilitarian, blocky, architectural
style and windows that looked back at you
blankly. (The rectangular windows also sort
of look like the holes in old computer punch
cards.) It was a building without ornamentation,
without flourishes. Though it was a
kind of ugly duckling, it was our ugly duckling.
It took decades for the trees in the barren
looking front lawn of its early years to grow
into the wonderful leafy shade givers they
became before they had to be cut down for
new construction. Likewise, it took years for
the grass to take root and thicken on the
playing fields behind the building.
The school had its quirks. Even when the
building was new the clocks throughout the
school often did not synch up, when they
worked at all. Leaks squirted through the
flat roof from the start. The parallel, two
“main” hallways in the sprawling building
were really long. The gym was smaller than
at most other high schools. But despite these
quirks, academics, the arts, and athletics
flourished there. The building is now a ghost
that only appears in our personal and collective
memories and in photos.
Those photos portray the energy and
changes we experienced there as well as the
joys, the sadness, and even the boredom.
Moments matter and the moments shared
among classmates remain imbedded in our
memory.
Along with its sister school next door -
Eastland Career Center - our high school
was a no nonsense place to work and learn.
School buildings and alumni age together.
Though our high school is gone, its alumni
live on and continue to make their impact on
the world even after 50 years.
In the end, a school is just a place. But it
is a place that provides the common shared
experience and bonds upon which we build
our lives and community.
