Funding for Uxbridge High School’s Internship Program<br />

State Representative Michael<br />

Soter (R-Bellingham) is<br />

Uxbridge High School has been<br />

selected to receive additional state<br />

funding from the Massachusetts<br />

Department of Elementary and<br />

Secondary Education (DESE) to<br />

establish paid internships for high<br />

school seniors interested in becoming<br />

teachers and educators.<br />

total of $1,504,866 in grant funding<br />

to be distributed to schools in 34<br />

municipalities across the state.<br />

Uxbridge High School is receiving<br />

$29,250 to be used to pay high<br />

school seniors for what would<br />

otherwise be unpaid internships<br />

in the field of education. Seniors<br />

at Uxbridge High School are<br />

already given the opportunity to<br />

Internship Program. This funding<br />

will expand this program, specifically<br />

for students interested in<br />

The DESE offers this program<br />

to ensure the future success of elementary<br />

and secondary education<br />

schools in Massachusetts. With<br />

this program, students will gain<br />

valuable experience in a careerreadiness<br />

programs that offers a<br />

hands-on opportunity to work with<br />

elementary students in a classroom<br />

setting, learn instructional<br />

methods from mentor instructors,<br />

and engage in educator preparation<br />

curriculum.<br />

Youth Police<br />

Academy is<br />

officially open<br />

accepting applications!<br />

Eligible applicants<br />

must<br />

be from the<br />

5th, 6th, 7th or<br />

8th grade as of<br />

September <strong>2024</strong>.<br />

Applications<br />

can be found at<br />

the Northbridge<br />

and Uxbridge Police Departments<br />

and will soon be available online.<br />

There will be two academies. The<br />

first will be July 15-19 held at the<br />

Uxbridge High School. The second<br />

academy will be held August 5-9 at<br />

Northbridge High School. Students<br />

from either town are eligible for<br />

either academy.<br />

Students will learn about the<br />

various aspects of law enforcements<br />

including: criminal investigations,<br />

crime scene processing,<br />

CPR overview, K-9 activities,<br />

criminal law and procedure, accident<br />

reconstruction, report writing<br />

and more.<br />

A typical academy day consists<br />

of physical training, morning<br />

snack, morning classroom sessopm.<br />

lunch, afternoon classroom<br />

session, clean-up, and dismissal.<br />

The academy is limited to 25<br />

students. In an effort to open the<br />

academy to new students, if yhou<br />

internship program has been<br />

instrumental for preparing young<br />

adults in our district for successful<br />

careers beyond high school. With<br />

this funding, students who are<br />

interested in becoming teachers<br />

will be financially supported as<br />

they gain necessary experience in<br />

the field.”<br />

Rep. Soter further emphasized<br />

the importance of funding internship<br />

programs for high school<br />

students and ensuring easy access<br />

to essential careers paths such as<br />

elementary and secondary school<br />

teachers.<br />
