“We are not in recession, but it does feel as though the brakes are being
applied” says Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot, in his
latest exploration of the retail market on page 12.
The figures make it clear that volume is down – and the recent collapse of
Everest serves as “a chilling reminder that fluctuations in demand can have a
large knock-on effect on businesses up and down the supply chain”.
The retail giant’s demise has again called into question the suitability of
its business model for 21st Century Britain. Despite hard-hitting consumer
marketing campaigns that boosted product awareness, and in turn, the
industry as a whole in years gone by, former Everest CEO, Simon Jarman,
notes how the company’s failure to adapt to shifting consumer demands “will
no doubt have been a contributory factor in its downfall”. Turn to page 7 to
hear more from Simon, with an extended version of his comments online at
One company who currently prides itself on responsive innovation is this
month’s cover star, Sheerline, and you can read more about the strides the
aluminium systems brand has made, in the past year alone, on page 14 of
this issue.
Elsewhere, Senior Architectural Systems explores some key curtain walling
considerations (p.16); VEKA reveals its ‘trailblazing’ new PVC-U system (p.18)
and DoorCo examines the latest design trends reflected in its GRiPCORE
composite door (p.22).
Read on for all of this, as well as some great content from companies
including ERA, Winkhaus, Pyroguard, LiSEC, Jade Engineering and Cyncly to
name a few...
I hope you enjoy the issue.
A RECORD MONTH
EXCLUSIVE H&S COURSE
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF)
Training Academy has underlined its
commitment to improving health & safety
(H&S) standards with the introduction of
a ‘ground-breaking’, industry-specific
training course that has been developed
in collaboration with the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
The new IOSH-approved ‘Managing Safely in
the Glass & Glazing Industry’ course has been
designed to further bolster safety standards,
empower businesses, and nurture a new
generation of skilled professionals.
It is aimed at directors, managers and
supervisors, and will deepen participants’
understanding of H&S responsibilities in the
workplace through a comprehensive 22-hour,
three-day programme, featuring classroombased
learning and an end-point assessment.
Upon completion, delegates will possess the
knowledge and skills to manage health and
safety effectively, including risk assessment
and legal requirements, incident response, the
identification of hazards and the implementation
of robust safety management systems.
Lauren Mawford, GGF Health & Safety Manager,
said: “This new initiative, which is the
only IOSH approved course that has been
specifically tailored for our sector, underscores
our unwavering commitment to fostering a
culture of safety within glass and glazing.
“By offering this exclusive course to the
entire industry, and at discounted rates to our
members, FENSA Approved Installers and
BFRC customers, we are ensuring accessibility
to essential training that promotes excellence
and ultimately, protects our workforce. Our
new IOSH training course equips businesses
with the tools to operate responsibly, safeguard
employees, and distinguish themselves in a
competitive market.”
GARNALEX NAMED IN GROWTH INDEX TOP 10
Garnalex is celebrating after the company was
named the ninth fastest growing company in the
UK according to the ORESA Growth Index 2024.
Garnalex enters the list – which champions
innovation, economic growth, and ‘inspirational
business leaders’ – for the first time with a
171.07% compound annual growth rate. And
considering the time-frame includes the Covid
and post-Covid recovery years, Garnalex feels the
achievement is ‘even more impressive’.
One of the key trends from this year’s findings
highlights the rise of sustainable businesses
and initiatives, and Garnalex prides itself on the
sustainable processes it says it has ‘woven into
the very foundations of the business’.
For instance, the company uses UK-sourced
aluminium to keep its carbon footprint low, while
also ensuring supply chain security, and recycles
all its aluminium offcuts.
Roger Hartshorn, Garnalex’s CEO, said: “To be
recognised as one of the top ten fastest growing
CORNWALL GROUP GETS ‘MATCH FIT’ FOR ‘25
Cornwall Group says it is on target to invest
£2m in Forward Glass by the end of June,
including a new toughening plant, reflecting
the group’s determination to be ‘match fit’ for
when the economy is expected to pick up by
the start of 2025.
Cornwall Group acquired Birmingham-based
Forward Glass in December 2023, including
the 100,000ft 2 site it occupies. The company
employs more than 90 people and supplies single
toughened, processed glass and stock to the
trade.
Cornwall Group’s chair, Mark Mitchell, said. “We
should have the toughener installed at Forward
Glass in Q1 2025, with a second scheduled for Q3
2025 elsewhere in the group.”
Mark said that the market remains volatile, but it
is important for the group to be ‘one step ahead’
in terms of investment.
companies in the UK is a huge achievement in
itself, but when you consider the context and
climate in which we and other businesses are
currently operating in, it’s fantastic.
“It’s also proof of what you can achieve when you
have the right strategic vision, ideas, investment,
products, and people working together – all of
which Garnalex has.”
“I don’t expect to see the market picking up
significantly before the end of this year,” he said.
“Compounding that, I also see some distress, with
some companies suffering cash flow problems.
“I think the trend for some parts of the market
to compete on price is coming home to roost,
because a drop in orders has left them nowhere
to turn to. This will lead to some casualties,
which should release some volume back into the
market, but I think it won’t be until Q2 2025 until
we see a significant upturn.”
EVEREST LEAVES A ‘LEGACY OF INNOVATION’
Everest’s former CEO has said that
the retail giant will leave a “legacy
of brand strength and innovation”,
despite acknowledging that a “failure
to evolve” is partly responsible for its
recent demise.
The household name entered administration, with
redundancies announced at the end of April, after
administrator, ReSovle, was unable to finalise
the sale of the double glazing business as a
going concern.
Speaking to Total Fabricator, Simon Jarman,
Founder of Clever Bean Accounting and former
CEO and CFO of Everest, said: “As Everest’s
former leader, it’s disheartening to see this great
brand’s demise.
“There was a time that where Everest led,
others followed, raising industry standards. Its
heavyweight consumer marketing campaigns
created significant product awareness,
undoubtedly benefitting the industry as a whole.
Following The London Declaration to combat
climate change through standards, BM
TRADA, the UKAS-accredited independent
management systems certification provider,
has highlighted that ISO has published an
amendment to many of its existing and new
management systems standards.
The changes emphasise the importance of
addressing the effects of climate change within the
framework of management systems standards.
BM TRADA’s Lee Horlock said: “We welcome the
amendments being made to the ISO management
system standards. Climate change considerations
will now be placed at the front and centre of
organisations’ minds when determining factors
which influence the organisation’s purpose,
objectives and sustainability. For organisations
currently undergoing the certification process
or already hold an ISO management system
certification, our experts are on hand to guide you
through these new amendments.”
Simon Jarman
“It goes without saying that its sales
approach has often garnered criticism,
and the failure to evolve and adapt
to shifting consumer demands will no
doubt have been a contributory factor in
its downfall.
“My heart goes out to all the loyal staff that find
themselves without a role and I wish you all well
with your search. Everest will be missed, not
by everybody, but its enduring influence on the
industry is a testament to its legacy of brand
strength and innovation, and cannot be denied.”
Administrator ReSolve has since struck a deal
to sell certain assets of the failed business to
Anglian Home Improvements, with the latter
pledging to fulfil orders taken by its crashed rival.
While the terms of the deal are finalised, an
interim agreement will enable customers to
arrange completion or fulfilment of their orders,
including those mid-way through the installation
process, as well as forward bookings.
ISO MAKES CLIMATE CHANGE AMENDMENTS
BM TRADA, part of the Element Materials
Technology group, emphasises that the overall
intent of the requirements for clauses 4.1 and 4.2
remain unchanged and the standards themselves
have not been revised so organisations do not
need to purchase new ones.
Lee added: “We stress that our clients already
holding an ISO management system certification
will not need any additional audit or a new
certificate issued. For those who have yet to do
so, climate change must now always be a topic
that is considered in your analysis and if found
relevant be part of your management system.”
PREMIER PEOPLE
Arched frame specialist, Premier Arches,
says it has defied the trend for high
turnover rates that disrupt production
schedules and negatively impact
customer service, by fostering a unique
'family-oriented' environment that
prioritises its workforce.
According to Directors Sean Greenall, Tom
Greenall, Dan Maloney, and Joe Trueman,
what really sets Premier apart from other
companies is its commitment to creating a
family-style working culture, and placing an
emphasis on fostering strong relationships
among employees to create an environment
where they enjoy coming to work every day.
And the results speak for themselves – in
2023 the company reported zero leavers of
choice, with an annual labour turnover rate
of just 6%, and a recent recruitment drive
expanding the team to 40-strong.
The Directors said: “Notably, over 20% of our
staff have been with us for more than five years,
a statistic we value more than any sales record.
“Selling and manufacturing arched and
angled frames is a complex job carried out
by skilled craftsmen, so our people are our
biggest asset. We work hard to protect,
support, develop and engage them, not
because it drives performance, but because
it's the right thing to do.
The Business Pilot Barometer
ARE THE BRAKES BEING APPLIED?
“We are not in recession, but it does feel as though the brakes are being applied” says Neil
Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot, in his exploration of the retail market...
The figures for April support what most
people are experiencing: volume is down.
But they also give an indication of what is to
come, which isn’t negative – if you are prepared.
At a headline level, average sales are down
10.1% in April, when compared to March 2024, to
55.8, and average leads are down 2.1% to 115.9.
This fall in volume affects those businesses that
are geared predominantly to service that part
of the market, and the collapse of Everest is a
chilling reminder that fluctuations in demand can
have a large knock-on effect on businesses up
and down the supply chain.
Sales up
The window industry is, by its very nature,
reactive, and it is easy to judge the state of the
market by a rolling three-month average. So, it
is worth remembering that sales are actually up
23.7% when compared to the same time last
year, and leads are up by 20.7%, which proves
that we started from a stronger starting point in
2024 than in 2023.
same period), then the outlook for the summer
doesn’t seem quite so bleak. These figures suggest
that the homeowners who are spending are
those looking for higher value products, and are
researching the market with the intention of buying.
Intention to buy
The widespread assumption is that, thanks to
the current cost-of-living crisis, households
don’t have the available budget to invest in home
improvements. If this were the case, I would expect
to see average leads and average sales down
much further.
As they stand, they are higher than a year ago,
and people are researching the market with the
intention of buying.
What I do see is hesitation. Confidence among
homeowners is low, which I put down to the high
cost of borrowing. Inflation is certainly approaching
the government’s target figure of 2%, but the Bank
of England has been very vocal about waiting until
the autumn (according to the latest reports) before
lowering the interest rate.
This is reflected in the sluggish housing market.
Why commit to a mortgage today, at historically
high rates, when it could be much cheaper in six
months’ time?
Elephant in the room
We are not in recession, but it does feel as though
the brakes are being applied. And let’s not ignore
the elephant in the room: what will happen after
the next election? Maybe we should be looking at
beyond the general election, and preparing our
businesses for a possible surge in demand when
confidence returns?
Using Business Pilot efficiently can help you track
each individual lead and monitor sales trends.
This will allow you to position your business so it
Cover Story
12 MONTHS OF INNOVATION
Sheerline looks back at how its developments launched in the last year, such as pregasketed
beads and SheerVent, have brought ‘a breath of fresh air’ to the aluminium market.
Disruptor, Noun: a person or thing that
prevents something, especially a system,
process, or event, from continuing as
usual or as expected:
If Sheerline was a tech company, it would be
known as a disruptive innovator based on the fact
it has taken an existing part of the fenestration
industry (aluminium) and reinvigorated it through
investment, expertise, and new ways of thinking
– driven by decades of experience and insight
and a desire to make things better.
It’s revolutionised service standards for
aluminium, improving on paint quality, delivery
times and customer reporting. Creating a fully
integrated range of products, that visually match
and are based on a common chassis design,
with many shared components. The Sheerline
Difference is about more than just products, it’s
about how they treat customers, how they give
customers the tools to succeed and how they
resolve bumps along the way.
In this article, we’ll focus on the past year,
highlighting the key products that have been
launched during a busy year, alongside some
SheerVent
of the system’s core design differences
– key to how Sheerline has bought
a breath of fresh air to the
aluminium market.
Sheerline launches
pre-gasketed beads to
streamline the fabrication
process:
Announced in March 2023, Sheerline
launched pre-gasketed beads across its
aluminium range. It meant that beads came
pre-installed with a tri-material weatherseal
gasket which was pre-installed across Prestige
and Classic beads. Beads which are common
across all of Sheerline’s windows and doors –
helping streamline fabricators manufacturing and
stockholding and keeping things straightforward
on site for installers.
The process was perfected after extensive
manufacturing and fabrication trials, which is
the same ethos the company applies to every
new product or component part. It makes life
easier for fabricators – something the company is
committed to.
In addition, the beads are easier to install owing
to a special low-friction coating that is applied
to the gasket during the manufacturing process.
This is just one of the new products that has been
launched in what has been an exceptionally busy
year for Sheerline.
How Sheerline’s patented corner cleat
paved the way for t reverse butt jointed,
internally beaded aluminium:
Designed to eliminate misalignment, and streamline
manufacture, Sheerline’s corner cleat is a
standardised component from its range of products.
These cleats add strength to the frame and sash,
while also improving the quality of finished
products and reducing manufacturing wastage.
This product paved the way for the launch of
the company’s new patented T cleat variant,
which enable fabricators to manufacture reverse
butt jointed windows using Z transoms for fully
internally glazed aluminium windows – which look
as beautiful as the rest of the Sheerline range and
satisfy homeowners desire for the ‘security’ of
internally beaded windows that they trust.
Reverse butt joints are widely used within
PVC-U because of the benefits – easily glazing
windows internally with no need for reverse
adaptors or dummy sashes, bringing cost savings
across manufacturing, materials, labour and
installation – which the aluminium industry can
now benefit from.
SYSTEMS
Clip-in beads for the ultra-slim Classic
range give customers greater choice:
Early in 2023, Sheerline launched a clip-in bead
option for its popular ultra-slim Classic range
to give customers even more choice without
compromising on security. This addition is
fabricator and installer-friendly, making life as
easy as possible.
For instance, one of the key advantages of this
product is the fact the frames and glass can be
supplied separately. In addition, there’s no need
for time-consuming wedge gasketing and no
requirement to mill the beads during manufacturing.
The clip-in bead option is offered in the same
two sash styles as the rest of Sheerline’s range
– stepped and contemporary. Homeowners can
expect the same high-performance, thermally
efficient, secure, and stylish final product they
have come to expect from the brand.
The original beadless Classic system is still
outstandingly good, but the introduction of the
beaded option proves that Sheerline listens
intently to customer feedback and reacts
accordingly – with a swiftness that few other
aluminium systems companies can match.
The award-winning S1 roof lantern just
got even better with added ventilation:
Unveiled on the stand at FIT Show 2023,
SheerVent is the company’s revolutionary
approach to lantern ventilation. It’s been
designed to sit lower than traditional alternatives,
so it sits flush with the frame of the S1 or S2,
ensuring a sleek aesthetic.
Sheerline, the disruptor:
When Sheerline was launched in 2018, with a
vision of transforming the fenestration industry,
it was seen as ‘the new kid on the block’. Since
then, the company has gained a reputation for
quickly bringing innovative products to market
that offer proper solutions to historic challenges,
while also offering a responsive and agile service,
with stocked colours available in just five days to
fabricator customers.
Reverse butt joint
Prestige corner cleat
But it’s not just the look that’s different, it also
offers practical solutions. For example, while roof
lantern or conservatory ventilation is known for
leaking over time, SheerVent glazes directly into
the ridge or wall plate, eliminating weaknesses
and water ingress.
It’s also intelligent, as customers can opt for
powered actuators. Add to this the fact they
can add sensors to detect rain, wind, and light,
and SheerVent offers the ultimate in hassle-free
ventilation, making unbearably hot summer
rooms usable year-round.
While it is visually clear Sheerline’s products
are stylish, sleek, and contemporary, a lot of
the mechanics and component parts have been
engineered with efficiency for both fabricators
and installers in mind. This attention to detail and
innovation is applied to every single Sheerline
product, from cills that sit perfectly flush with the
back of windows, to ancillaries that include coextruded
weatherseals and cement key lines.
What the past 12 months show is the way
the company has perfectly paired real-world
experience with new ways of thinking and
different approaches to existing challenges. The
result has been a leading brand that keeps pace
with consumer demand, offering them solutions
they didn’t even know existed, while also making
life easier for fabricators and installers.
Aluminium: Curtain Walling
OPENING UP CURTAIN WALL CONTRACTS
Phil Guy, national key account manager for Senior Architectural Systems, takes a closer
look behind the curtain wall to reveal the key issues fabricators and installers should
consider when choosing the products and supply chain partner for their next job.
Traditionally a core part of many commercial
buildings, curtain wall systems are
increasingly being specified for residential
schemes, schools and healthcare buildings.
One of the biggest appeals of aluminium curtain
wall systems is the sleek and stylish façade
designs that they can help create. Aluminium,
which as a building material is durable and
exceptionally strong, allows for larger spans of
glazing to be supported within much narrower
frames to give the slim sightlines and wider views
that many building designers prefer.
Choosing a system that offers a range of box
sizes enables large expanses of glazing to be
accommodated and as these can be reinforced if
required for even greater strength, wider spans
can be achieved without the need for additional
supporting steel to be used. With the cost of steel
continuing to rise, the removal of this extra cost
– and extra risk – makes aluminium curtain wall
systems the perfect choice for such projects.
But any curtain wall system must perform as well
as it looks and there are a few important boxes
that need to be ticked.
Movement
A key part of the specification process is to
understand how the curtain wall system will
respond to potential building movement.
Although curtain walling carries no deadload
other than its own, or the possible attachment of
sunshades or signage, it is affected by wind load
pressures. It’s also important to consider any
further deflection caused by live or imposed loads
that may occur throughout the operation cycles of
the building, such as the movement of workers,
equipment or furniture. This deflection, if not
calculated correctly, has the potential to cause
the sealed units to break.
Any potential movement must be calculated and
accommodated, through the careful specification
of different box depths or grid sizes, to ensure
that the specified curtain wall system is suitable.
Approved Document A provides guidance on the
loading, support and fixing for curtain walling and
other wall claddings and early engagement with
your chosen fenestration systems supplier can be
key to achieving compliance.
Cap choices
Different capping options for curtain walling
systems also help create the desired aesthetic
and there is a wide range of configurations
to choose from. The use of caps conceals the
exterior pressure plates that are used to secure
the glass infill panels in place to achieve a more
uniform façade. A fully capped system creates the
traditional ‘grid’ design but caps can also be used
horizontally along the transoms to help make a
building look wider, or vertically along the mullions
to give a structure a greater sense of height.
For large glazed façades where a flush finish is
preferred, a capless curtain walling system is
ideal. Also referred to as silicone sealed, this type
of system can create a ‘frameless’ look as there
are no face caps to interrupt the exterior view.
Drainage options
Further flexibility is available in terms of drainage
solutions, with a choice of mullion and zone
drained curtain walling systems. Mullion drained
systems are becoming increasingly popular as
they can be quicker to install on site and they
offer more flexibility for integration with sloped
glazing systems.
Contract Talk
SYSTEMS
However, the type of drainage used will depend
greatly on the specific requirements of a project
and consideration will need to be given to the way
the curtain walling integrates with other systems,
such as cladding, in terms of the design of the
membranes, seals and drainage paths. With this
in mind, it’s always advisable to seek advice
from the systems manufacturer prior to work
commencing on site.
Thermal targets
Many fenestration systems on today’s market
can help achieve ultra-low U-values but the real
test of a product is how it will contribute to the
overall thermal performance of a building. For
example, careful planning at the design stage is
required to ensure that the quest to achieve low
U-values doesn’t lead to overheating problems.
As it’s more expensive to cool a building using
air conditioning than to heat it, it is important
that the right balance is found between thermal
performance, solar gain and light transmittance.
Cold spots and condensation caused by thermal
bridging also need to be avoided.
Getting it right on site
Any fenestration package should be designed as a
complete package so that individual elements such
as doors, windows, low-rise entrance systems,
sloped glazing or roof atriums work together. This is
not only from an aesthetic point of view but from a
practical one too as working with one sole supplier
and having all warranties and product information
available from one source is an important way to
keep any project on track.
However, one of the biggest challenges when
designing curtain wall façades is not just how
the system coordinates with the other glazed
elements but how it integrates with any external
cladding systems.
Communication is key when installing cladding in
partnership with curtain walling systems, so that
the aesthetic, technological and financial aims of
a project are met. Cladding and curtain walling
installers must work alongside each other at all
stages of a project where both systems have been
specified to ensure the systems combine perfectly.
Both sets of installers should work to the same
information to guarantee that joints of the panels
– both horizontal and vertical – run to the same
sightlines as the curtain walling and therefore fulfil
the aesthetic requirements of the project.
If cladding is installed at ground level,
measures must be taken to ensure that curtain
walling systems adhere to exactly the same
measurements and criteria as the cladding. Any
discrepancies here could see systems being
installed out-of-sync and the cost implications
to rectify this would be substantial. The use
of CAD to reveal any discrepancies has been
significantly improved by the greater use of BIM
modelling which can create a more accurate and
streamlined process.
Often, the glazing systems will be installed ahead
of cladding systems – this allows the building
to become weather-tight to prevent damage and
for interior fit out work to commence. The EPDM
membrane, which forms a seal between a curtain
walling system and the inner structure of the
building, must be attached to the inner structure
of the building neatly and correctly when fixing
curtain walling in place ahead of cladding to
allow for weather integrity – the seal prevents
air leakage and is a barrier to water and vapour.
The cladding must be installed around the curtain
walling system, with contractors ensuring that the
cladding conceals the EPDM membrane so the
aesthetics are not compromised.
Support is on hand
With so much to consider, partnering with a
supplier like Senior Architectural Systems can
help. As well as offering a full range of compatible
aluminium curtain wall systems, including sloped
glazing options, doors and windows, our team
of technical sales managers provide regional
PVC-U
SYSTEMS
A 'QUANTUM LEAP' IN PVC-U
VEKA says its ‘trailblazing’ new system is an ‘industry-first innovation’ for PVC-U fabrication.
suite of double-rebated and doubleflush
extrusions for every application
‘One
that’s fit for the future and easy to produce
and install’ is how systems house VEKA describes
OMNIA; its ‘trailblazing’ new profile system, billed
as a ‘quantum leap’ in PVC-U fabrication.
Designed and developed in close collaboration
with its customers and partners, VEKA says the
launch of OMNIA signals the next generation of
fenestration, ‘encompassing the needs of the
whole industry and end-users’.
The new system offers ‘a range of possibilities’
across casement windows and tilt and turn, plus
residential doors and French doors – meeting
the highest energy, weather, and acoustic
performance standards.
VEKA says the collaborative design and development
process, which has taken place over four years, has
enabled it to ‘completely revolutionise the fabrication
NEW MECHANICALLY JOINED FLUSH WINDOW
aluplast has unveiled its new mechanically joined flush window, which promises to open-up new opportunities for
fabricators and installers who are looking to capitalise on the trend for authentic timber window replacements.
aluplast says the unique mechanical join is the result of a significant period of product development, and it allows
fabricators to create a realistic finish without investing in specialist tools or machinery.
Coupled with the deep bottom rail and woodec (timber-effect foil), the new mechanically joined flush window gives
homeowners the opportunity to confidently replace timber windows while benefiting from improved thermal performance and
a lifetime of low maintenance. The window can achieve a WER of A, allowing it to comfortably achieve building regulation
compliance for refurbishment projects, and is manufactured using ecotech, which maximises the amount of recycled content
in a profile’s design, without affecting performance. The flush window can also be coupled with aluplast’s flush door to create
a uniform appearance across the whole of the house. www.aluplast.co.uk
'WORLD CLASS' OTIF DRIVES CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Sheerline has revealed how vertical integration, internal communications, and a focus on providing
an agile service have enabled it to achieve a world class OTIF (on time, in full) of 99.1% in February,
followed by 99% in March – helping maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
While benchmarking OTIF to assess performance is not uncommon for manufacturers, Sheerline monitors at full
order level, not by item. This means that if a single item is missing from any order (that may contain dozens of
items), the full order counts against the overall OTIF score.
Steve Musgrave, Sheerline Operations Director, said: “Receiving an OTIF of just over 99% in February is an
enormous achievement for the team, but we cannot let complacency set in. Our challenge now is to improve further
and then maintain those levels, so customer satisfaction remains high.” www.sheerline.com
SYSTEMS HOUSE 'LEADING THE WAY ON SUSTAINABILITY'
Epwin Window Systems says it is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to prioritising sustainability ‘in a series of
initiatives that promote eco-friendly practices’ throughout its operation and supply chain.
Ray McGrady, Commercial Director, said: “Here at Epwin Window Systems we understand the moral and commercial imperatives
of sustainability. It’s reflected in everything from our smallest actions to our strategic business decisions and investments.”
The organisation has recycled waste bar length into RCM (recycled composite material) as part of its manufacturing process
since 2009 and in 2018, it was the first UK systems house to achieve the VinylPlus Product Label.
To support the reduction of the built environment’s operational emissions, the manufacturer says it offers the widest portfolio of
fully integrated thermally-efficient window and door systems. Ray added: “Our systems help fabricators and installers to deliver
the thermally efficient solutions the market – and the world – needs.” www.epwinwindowsystems.co.uk
IN-HOUSE PROFILE BENDING FROM SHEERLINE
Having invested £270,000 in a TIM-ING Profile Bending Machine at its Derbyshire HQ, Sheerline is offering a new
specialist profile bending service, enabling fabricators to order perfect arched, curved and round windows.
This announcement coincides with a growing demand for arched windows and according to Sheerline, TIM-ING’s
equipment offers some of the most advanced bending machinery for aluminium and PVC profiles in the world. There are 3D
cameras within the machine, which enable it to be automated for efficiency and to ensure repeatable quality.
Sheerline says it prides itself on offering bespoke services to its fabricator partners, and in addition customers can
choose from standard, custom, or dual colour choices without increasing lead-times. Sheerline says it provides an agile,
robust service by keeping everything in-house, from aluminium extrusion to painting, and now profile bending.
STREAMLINING ALUMINIUM WINDOW PRODUCTION
Winkhaus UK’s aluPilot fitting system is
designed to streamline the production process of
aluminium windows.
Winkhaus says aluminium fabricators can save up
to 10 minutes of production time per window with
aluPilot, compared to traditional systems available
on the market. Winkhaus has confirmed the result
of 10 minutes time-saving in tests conducted with
manufacturers during aluPilot’s development and
subsequent roll-out to European systems houses.
The ‘fastening concept’ optimises assembly
efficiency by utilising ‘clamp and clip’ technologies
to insert components into the fitting groove of the
sash frame, eliminating the need for upstream work
processes, such as punching and cutting connecting
rods to length.
The streamlined ‘tooling concept’ simplifies
installation processes, with assembly and adjustment of components
requiring only two tools. With just a screwdriver and an installation lever,
manufacturers can effortlessly install and adjust components, removing the
need for costly punching tools.
The comprehensive ‘handling concept’ ensures that everything arrives preassembled
and tailored to the manufacturer’s specifications, minimising handling
effort during fabrication. With pre-installed components
reducing the number of fittings by up to 25%, fabricators
can replenish their product lines faster and enjoy
enhanced production efficiency.
aluPilot’s range of custom accessory components
also allow greater design flexibility to meet changing
customer requirements. This includes the aluPilot
cushioned turn limiter that brakes the sash in the
turn position, protecting the window from gusts and
reducing the risk of windows slamming open or shut; the
aluPilot ventilation shear for turn windows that provides
adjustable ventilation up to 90º from the closed position;
and the aluPilot locking force optimiser which is designed
to reduce tilt and turn locking forces, ideal for high sash
weights and sashes with a low handle position.
Winkhaus UK’s Aluminium Systems Manager, Alastair
Wheeler, said: “At Winkhaus, we pride ourselves on
being a collaborative partner, working closely with system houses to meet their
specific needs. Through mutual development, testing, and certification, we
ensure that each system house can enjoy the benefits of a bespoke window
solution, that saves precious production time.”
NEW WOODGRAIN FOILING SERVICE
Kurt Greatrex (pictured) founded
Sheerline has launched a new woodgrain foiling service that introduces an ‘authentic’ wood-effect
option across its entire aluminium range of windows and doors, including the Prestige lift & slide
patio and bi-fold doors.
Partnering with supplier of laminated foils, Renolit, Sheerline is offering eight foils from stock, covering
the most commonly used colours. All produced at Sheerline’s vertically integrated manufacturing site, the
company says its customers can have ‘the best of both worlds’: capturing the ‘Scandi look’ inside, and
combining it with a ‘hard wearing, low maintenance architectural aesthetic’ for the exterior.
Available in just 10-days from order for fabricator customers, Sheerline says this ‘agile service’ is yet another way the company is raising the bar in the
world of aluminium. Dual colours and combinations with powder-coated finishes are also offered in the same timescale. www.sheerline.com
Kömmerling has returned from ‘what has been widely regarded as one of its best Fensterbau
exhibitions’, reporting sales enquiries ‘from across the globe’.
With sustainability ‘at the heart of everything’ innovations presented included the 100% recycled window,
ReFrame, and the ‘revolutionary’ bio-attributed PVC which completely replaces fossil materials using a pine oilbased
The DoorCo Column
A CORE TREND-SETTER
DoorCo Marketing Manager, Ellie Pool, says GRiPCORE is setting its own
standards when it comes to what’s hot in 2024...
Ellie Pool
Grey dominates the
GRiPCORE colour palette
Although not a new brand for DoorCo,
GRiPCORE was relaunched at the end of
last year with a totally re-engineered core.
Moving away from a timber-only core to achieve
greater results in rigidity, security and energy
efficiency, GRiPCORE 2.0 is now engineered with
a hybrid of layered HDF plywood timber and
PIR foam, compressed between two sheets of
aluminium, an additional sheet of exterior grade
plywood and finished with our signature GRP outer
skins. The combination of foam and wood provides
enhanced thermal capabilities and impressive
strength, whilst the aluminium acts as a vital layer
for protecting against moisture infiltration and extra
stability. The result of bringing all these elements
together is a one-of-a-kind, premium slab that
delivers outstanding results.
The future-proof engineering of GRiPCORE’s hybrid
timber-foam core means it is stronger, more secure
and more thermally efficient than ever before.
A wide range of styles
As a superior grade door, it’s expected that the
trends we’re seeing emerging for GRiPCORE 2.0
will differ from the main. Where our ORiGINAL
foam-filled slab sees traditional door designs top
the charts, GRiPCORE shows us a bit more variety.
Although Carnoustie remains the top-selling
prepped style for GRiPCORE so far, it’s the
Designer styles including Monza II Solid and
Monza II Augusta Centre, that are within the bestsellers.
We truly believe these modern designs
proving so popular directly correlates with the
innovative new composition of the core.
The premium, modern feel really captures the
futuristic nature of its new design, and this pairs
perfectly with it being so loved in these stunning
designer styles.
Go-to grey
Turning towards colour trends, they continue the
theme of GRiPCORE being the modern trailblazer
of our brands; the colour story very much follows
the same narrative.
Grey is the absolute go-to so far for the new
version of GRiPCORE. Where we see quite a lot of
variation in colour for ORiGINAL prepped slabs,
GRiPCORE’s stats show that grey is the bestseller
by far.
From Anthracite to Slate to Agate and beyond, in
2024 so far, GRiPCORE slabs have been painted
in varying shades of grey, more so than any other
colour.
The PATiNA range of colours, which compliments
the distinctive grain of the Monza designs, is
also proving more popular for GRiPCORE too. The
combination is really chic and something we can
only anticipate growing in popularity.
We paint every GRiPCORE slab to order and we’re
loving seeing the array of grey making its way
through the factory.
Modern minimalism for glass
The high-end theme continues when it comes to
glass too. Like the styles, the ultimate best sellers
across all our brands are consistent, with clear,
satin and obscure glass taking top billing, but
with GRiPCORE these are closely followed by the
modern, yet minimalistic designs of Louisiana,
Graphite and Cubic. These particular designs
proving popular with this slab type really tops
off the narrative we can see with this brand –
modern to the core.
Going forward with GRiPCORE
Since launching the new version of GRiPCORE
at the end of last year, we’ve loved seeing the
response and uptake from our network. We’re
really excited to see how the trends for this brand
will continue to progress and whether it will
continue to pave its own way with what’s hot.
Our hybrid timber-foam core, finished with our
signature GRP skins, is in stock and available to
order now directly from DoorCo.
Locking Systems
PART OF THE 'FAMILY OF LOCKS'...
Winkhaus UK presents Thunderbolt; the 5-point locking system especially designed with
increased tolerances for door installers.
Winkhaus’ Thunderbolt multipoint locking
system is specifically engineered
with increased tolerances in mind,
to streamline the process for door installers.
The 5-point locking mechanism features twin
deadbolts in the upper and lower positions,
each measuring 20mm long and 8.5mm thick,
providing security and peace of mind for
homeowners and tenants.
Thunderbolt is operated by a lever or key turn
which activates the bolts within the locking
system, along with a deadbolt which is deployed
by turning the key in the cylinder to add an
enhanced level of security.
Thunderbolt’s heavy-duty keeps are
manufactured using high-grade steel, plated to
comply with the Grade 5 corrosion resistance
requirements of the BS EN1670 European
Standard. The multipoint locking system is
extremely easy to install and can be used with
a range of doors including composite, timber,
aluminium or PVC-U.
Tolerance and strength
The Thunderbolt multipoint locking system
features specifically designed twin nickelplated
alloy deadbolts which are chamfered
to allow a high degree of fitting tolerance for
door installation. An engineered alloy sprung
latch and nickel-plated steel deadbolt provides
the Thunderbolt with maximum strength in the
centre of the door, and the deadbolt shape,
with up to 2mm adjustment to compensate for
any misalignment of the door during and after
installation.
Designed to harmonise with Winkhaus’ XR6 one
star profile cylinders and armorShield two-star
cylinder protection, Thunderbolt is compliant
with Police ‘Secured by Design’ and passes the
rigorous PAS24 security standard. Tested to
100,000 cycles at Winkhaus’ dedicated in-house
laboratory, the sprung gearbox helps prevent
handle ‘droop’.
Like all our multipoint locking systems,
Thunderbolt features our Nano Protect coating
as standard, which protects the hardware from
corrosion and the ability to recover from everyday
wear and tear.
Interchangeable solutions
Thunderbolt is part of Winkhaus’ ‘Family of Locks’
range, which makes it easier for fabricators and
installers to interchange one of Winkhaus’ locks
for another based on customer requirements.
Using the same routing as AV4, Thunderbolt,
TruLock and autoLock AV2 can be fitted to all
door materials and interchanged on-site, thereby
reducing the time spent by, and cost of, property
services and maintenance contractors.
Thunderbolt Heritage
The Thunderbolt Heritage is a key turn activated
multipoint locking system which houses the
cylinder at eye-level position, perfect for modern or
traditional doors with ornate or architectural long
bar or traditional pull door hardware. Featuring
all the benefits of the Thunderbolt, this locking
system lends itself perfectly to more contemporary
designs, such as long bar pull handles, and is
suitable for timber and composite doors.
Offering high levels of functional safety, userfriendly
convenience and reliable protection,
Winkhaus mechanical locking systems can be used
for a range of buildings, from individual entrance or
apartment doors, to larger offices and buildings.
Composite Doors
EARLY ADOPTER
Glasgow-based Windowplus, one of Distinction Doors’ first fabricators, looks back at the
evolution of both parties throughout their successful, long-standing partnership...
“We were one of the first Distinction
Doors fabricators,” says Robert
Tierney, General Manager of
Windowplus. “At the time, composite doors were new
to the market, and as an early adopter it was a risk,
but I’m pleased to say we’ve never looked back!
“We have developed our offering working
alongside Distinction, taking advantage of product
development, range expansion, and added-value
services. Ultimately, our customers benefit from
our loyal and long-standing relationship.”
Since then, composite door sales have risen yearon-year
for the Glaswegian fabricator. The biggest
increase follows the decision to use Distinction’s
full prep service, including paint, prep, and glazing.
Speed = more sales
“We have progressed along with Distinction,
and we now purchase glazed, cut to size, fullyprepped
door slabs. This has enabled us to
speed up our composite door fabrication process,
dramatically.
“Prior to this, we did it all; cutting, routing, and
glazing every door. It could take an hour just to
cut the door to size, the speed was dictated by
the machine. Now, our prep time is reduced by
around 80%. It takes us less than 40 minutes to
complete a doorset,” explains Robert.
This efficiency has positively impacted sales
and created opportunities for Windowplus. “We
can fulfil larger orders, faster,” continues Robert.
“Plus, selling is made easier for everyone thanks
to the ease of ordering through Distinction’s
online portal.”
Predominantly a trade supplier, Windowplus also
works with retail and commercial customers in
the new-build and home improvement markets.
“I’d say about 90% of our composite door sales
are for new-build projects or an extension,” says
Robert. We’re getting more and more enquiries
from small- to medium-sized developers wanting
composite doors front and back on multi-house
schemes, and these numbers soon add up.”
nxt-gen
Windowplus was also one of the first to take
Distinction’s nxt-gen door range when it launched.
“That was an easy decision,” continues, Robert.
“We really like the aesthetics; it looks more like a
traditional door. We also appreciated the savings
– less waste and the fact that the nxt-gen glazing
system is half the glazing time compared to
standard glazing cassettes. We were still doing our
own prep then, so this saved time.”
Several nxt-gen door styles are on display in the
company’s factory showroom. There are nine
display doors in total. “We’ve gone from two
to nine fully-fitted Distinction doorsets,” says
Robert. “They now command the most prominent
positions in the showroom. Distinction has always
supported us with new slabs and marketing
support. We have the Distinction Doors brochure
and we display images of our door installations
on a TV.” A virtual tour of the showroom and
factory is available online.
This commitment represents the growth and
opportunity that composite doors present.
Best-sellers
The nxt-gen ES02 Esteem was Windowplus’s
best-selling composite door style in 2023. nxtgen
EL01 Elegance and nxt-gen EC01 Eclat also
feature in the company’s top five composite door
sales for last year. The success of these products
mirrors Distinction’s own experience with prep
sales of nxt-gen doors up 5% in 2023, compared
with the previous year and doubling since 2020.
“The nxt-gen doors have been a great addition
to our product portfolio,” continues Robert. “Our
customers love them because they strongly
appeal to modern homeowners and they look
good, especially with Distinction’s exclusive
flush-fitted beaded system and moulding.
There’s also plenty of choice – seven door styles,
plus Distinction’s decorative glass range and
bespoke colour palette. These options help our
customers secure sales – homeowners like to
make the door their own.”
Colour
Being a fully-prepped customer, Windowplus
has access to Distinction’s paint service. “Paint
is essential to our current offering,” continues
Robert. “Colour is one of the reasons that
composite doors have taken off and it’s easy
to see why, especially as once painted they’re
virtually maintenance-free unlike timber doors
which need repainting.”
Distinction Anthracite Grey was Windowplus’s
most requested colour in 2023, almost double
that of Distinction Black Brown in second place.
This is unsurprising as Anthracite Grey has
dominated the industry for almost 10 years.
There’s further evidence to support the industry
trend with four of the top five Windowplus colours
being grey or a neutral tone.
Investment
Windowplus operates from a purpose-built
factory on Spiersbridge Business Park in Greater
Glasgow. From here, they deliver product all over
Scotland, offering a supply only or a supply and fit
service. The fabricator manufactures PVC window
and door products from Aluplast, alongside
Distinction’s composite doors. Due to building
“Composite doors were new to the market, and as
an early adopter it was a risk, but I’m pleased to
say we’ve never looked back!”
regulations in Scotland, tilt & turn windows are
a staple. The company also supplies vertical
sliders, bi-folding and sliding patio doors through
its extensive network.
The roof of the factory is currently being upgraded
and a solar panel system is due to be fitted. This
investment will extend the building’s lifecycle, help
reduce energy costs for the business, and support
its environmental ambitions. Last year, Windowplus
took delivery of a fleet of new electric vans.
40th anniversary
2024 also marks the company’s 40th
anniversary. Windowplus was established in 1984
by Bill and Margaret Tierney who ran the business
until 2002 when Colin Mackenzie took over,
running the company under their guidance. Today,
Windowplus remains a family business with
Robert and John running day-to-day operations
under Colin’s supervision. Other family members
work in accounts, sales, and administration. This
includes Colin’s son, Craig, John’s sister, Lesley
and his wife, Lauren.
The company will host an open day later in the
year to celebrate. All will be welcome!
Grateful for long and loyal custom
“We are extremely proud of our relationship
with Windowplus,” comments Chantel Roach,
Managing Director of Distinction Doors. “They
have grown and developed with us, embracing
any new products and services, and contributing
to the widespread success of Distinction Doors
across Scotland.
“As a full-prep customer they appreciate the
associated benefits which, as a reliable source
of high-quality GRP composite doors, they share
with their customers.
“We wish to thank everyone at Windowplus for
their contribution and continued loyalty, and we
congratulate them on reaching this significant
milestone.”
Updates
ENDURANCE CONTINUES OFFSETTING COMMITMENT
Endurance Doors recently entered into a new partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain, as part of its
continued efforts ‘to compensate for any unpreventable carbon emissions caused by its operations’.
Carbon Neutral Britain is one of the UK’s largest carbon offsetting organisations, enabling its partners to
‘balance out their carbon footprint’ via various carbon capture or reduction projects around the world.
Endurance Doors plans to work with Carbon Neutral Britain to eventually become ‘a fully and
independently verified carbon neutral organisation certified to the highest global standards’.
In addition to carbon offsetting, Endurance Doors utilises energy from renewable sources, including solar
panels on its factory roof, and makes widespread use of electric vehicles. It also sends zero waste to landfill,
employs recycled materials where possible, and uses timber from sustainably managed, PEFC and FSC
certified North European forests. endurancedoors.co.uk
PERMADOOR UNVEILS NEW BRAND IDENTITY
Manufacturer of fire and security composite doors, Permadoor, has launched a new brand identity.
The new branding is part of a wider investment strategy designed to support Permadoor’s position as one of the
UK’s biggest suppliers of composite doors to the social housing and new-build markets.
The investment includes a new vehicle fleet and in-house paint line, as well as a new ‘user-friendly’ pricing portal
for its retail brand, Safedoors. In addition, a new FSC-accredited composite door offer will be launched this year, as
well as an increased range of fire doors including more glazed options for both internal and external fire doors.
Other recent developments include the launch of a new solid timber core 48mm composite door – the only
48mm door on the market that can use both the chamfered and sculptured Profile 22 profile, giving it ‘huge
appeal’ in the social housing sector. www.permadoor.co.uk
OPENING UP NEW SLIDER OPPORTUNITIES WITH ALUK
AluK has launched a brand new, ultra-low U-value, slim sightline lift and slide patio
door, which it says will open up new opportunities for customers in the higher end of
the retail market, ‘demanding’ coastal applications and high-rise apartment projects.
For fabricators, the S140 Lift and Slide has been designed with easy preps to make it
quick to manufacture and a dedicated sub cill and simple add-on for trickle vents. It also
comes with the option of AluK’s clever new Quik Clip clip-in bead system.
AluK’s MD, Russell Yates, said: “This is a door which ticks every box for fabricators and
installers looking to get a bigger slice of the lucrative premium market. It’s easy to manufacture
and, thanks to the addition of our Quik Clip system, incredibly quick to glaze.” bit.ly/3w4AOl3
REYNAERS LAUNCHES THERMAL COMMERCIAL DOOR
Reynaers Aluminium has launched a high-usage anti-finger trap thermal commercial door and framing
system, developed specifically for the UK market and suitable for a range of ground-floor applications.
Achieving a U-value as low as 1.1W/m 2 K, the thermally broken Vision 7 door features a post-installation
adjustable bottom pivot that allows installers to make final adjustments after the door has been installed.
Ian Osborne, UK Product Development Manager at Reynaers, said: “We have listened to a range of
stakeholders across the industry and considered all the feedback in developing the Vision 7 Thermal
Commercial Door to offer a premium combination of optimal performance and ease of production, as well as
providing the slimline aesthetics that architects and developers want to see. It can be manufactured up to
3m height and 120Kg weight; leaf width 1.25m.” www.reynaers.co.uk/products/aluminium-doors/vision-7
Epwin Window Systems’ new Stellar Aluminium Inline Sliding Door is ‘setting a new benchmark in
compliance, innovation and aesthetics’ according Phil Parry, Technical Director.
Encouraging fabricators to ‘look beyond the headlines’ when it comes to identifying the stand-out qualities
of aluminium sliding doors, Phil said: “Most aluminium sliding patio doors use a dummy sash to create
the fixed pane. The Stellar Aluminium Inline Sliding Door is different because we have opted to remove
the dummy sash on the fixed pane and utilise a direct glazed fixed light. It’s a technical innovation that
makes a compelling difference. It not only enhances thermal efficiency but also ensures compliance with
building regulations, including Part L, in both new-build and extension projects. Moreover, the removal of the
dummy sash results in sleeker sightlines and an increased glazed area, further elevating the door’s slimline
aesthetics and contemporary appeal, even in smaller apertures.” www.epwinwindowsystems.co.uk
ODL EUROPE EXTENDS CONTEMPORARY DOOR OFFER
ODL Europe has extended its door offer with the introduction of two new contemporary door designs.
Both the new Moderne Benton and the Moderne Wellington offer ‘sleek, modern aesthetics’ and flush door
detailing, tapping into the growing trend for contemporary minimalism.
Commenting on the contemporary range extension, Suzanne Nicholl, Head of Sales and Marketing at ODL Europe,
said: “In a market where product differentiation is critical, our extended range of contemporary doors will help
customers stand out from the crowd and maximise the market opportunities.”
Hot on the heels of the newly launched Redford Door, characterised by its three-section glazing and flush
contemporary aesthetics, the two new doors are available in any RAL colour and complement the new TriSYS
Modern flush framing system. They are PAS 24 accredited and backed by a 10 year warranty. www.odleurope.com
TIMBER CORE COMPOSITE FIRST OUT OF DONCASTER
Kurt Greatrex (pictured) founded Dekko Window
Following the recent announcement of a new manufacturing and research facility in Doncaster, DoorCo says the first
innovation out of the doors will be a new timber core composite door.
Mark Towers, DoorCo’s Head of Operations, said: “The new Doncaster facility is something I have been working on in the background
for many months – not only setting up the new home of DoorCo Manufacturing and Innovation, which is the fourth standalone site in
the UK, but also designing a new door slab. In addition to our two current door brands – ORiGINAL and GRiPCORE – we recognised
there was an obvious opening for the addition of a new product that is accessible for the whole market. Deciding to make this
product in the UK in Doncaster was a natural choice as it enables us to have total control of the development process and future
manufacturing. The new door’s construction is a timber core finished with Thermoplastic CoolSkin technology. As with all DoorCo slabs,
the new door will be made to fit any profile on the market, making it a versatile solution for our network.” trade.door-co.com
Style Trends
STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
Kerry Blackford, Senior Category Manager at ERA, discusses the window and door style
trends that are defining today’s homes and the hardware solutions to suit.
A
2023 study from Houzz found that more
and more homeowners are looking to
renovate their homes for the long term,
with three-in-five renovators in 2022 planning to
stay in the same house for more than 10 years.
With the cost-of-living crisis still impacting UK
homeowners, it comes as no surprise that when
considering home renovation projects, people are
looking to make the most out of their investments,
seeking longevity and long-term value for money,
in order to avoid taking on further costs, later
down the line.
With this, changes to doors and windows have
enduring benefits, affording homeowners the
The Pembroke D shaped handle
chance to improve their home’s appearance,
security and thermal efficiency.
The right design choices can completely
transform a property from the inside out, but
it’s important that the latest design trends are
matched by high-performance security and
hardware solutions that ensure functionality.
Aluminium bi-fold doors
Bi-fold doors have been popular for well over
a decade, thanks to their ability to integrate a
home’s interior and exterior spaces. Given that
they are built to stack away seamlessly, they are
the choice for homeowners who want to bring the
outside in, with the greatest of ease.
This feeling of openness makes them a stand-out
option for openings extending out into gardens,
particularly from kitchen extensions and openplan
family rooms thanks to the clear sightlines
and ample natural light they offer.
Aluminium substrates continue to dominate the
bi-fold market, thanks to their slim sightlines,
unrivalled strength and ability to support large
glazing panels, and minimal maintenance
requirements.
Carefully selecting hardware for any door is integral
to ensure effortless operation and maximum
security. Not least with bi-fold doors which require
a range of specialist hinges, handles and locks to
complete their complex system.
For example, the hinges on bi-fold doors should
not only be strong but they should allow each
door to open and close independently and connect
the doors together. Low quality hinges can result
in bi-fold doors that fail to open in a single and
smooth fashion. Equally, choosing the correct
lock and handle will ensure security and allow the
doors to function properly.
ERA, the UK’s leading fenestration specialists,
provides a range of bespoke options that are
suitable for bi-folds, including locks, handles and
hinges, allowing fabricators the opportunity to
offer customers a great deal of choice.
Inline sliding patio doors
While bi-folds, of course, offer a world of
advantages, there has been a resurgence in the
popularity of the inline sliding patio door over the
past five years, for a wide variety of reasons.
Sliding doors are not only great for those who
want to install doors in an area with limited space
for doors to fold, such as a balcony or terrace,
they can also offer a good alternative for the
homeowner who may find a full run of bi-folds
difficult to operate.
HARDWARE & ACCESSORIES
In addition, sliding doors means fewer panels
and less visible frame than bi-folds; they give the
benefit of more open glazing which is perfect for
customers who want a clearer view of their garden
with less obstructions. With fewer panels needed
to cover wide openings, this can often make sliding
doors more affordable than bi-folds too.
ERA’s Fab&Fix Monkey Tail key locking window handle
Those homeowners who are looking to prioritise
sustainability and thermal efficiency may find that
sliding doors are the right choice for them too,
given that they tend to offer better efficiencies,
such as more natural light, and for those with
thermally broken frames and Low-E glass options,
improved insulation and less heat transfer.
In addition, the glass can trap cool air inside
during summer to keep the home comfortable.
For handles that complement inline sliding patio
doors, ERA’s Fab&Fix range is ideal. Matched
with a vast range of Fab&Fix door and window
hardware, the handles can be selected in a finish
that complements the entire home.
The Pembroke D shaped handle is available in
standard and extended lever options. For nonlocking
applications, dummy handles, blanking
plates and non-locking sliding door handles are
also available.
In addition, ERA provides secure locks and keeps
for a wide range of sliding doors, such as the ERA
Patio Door Locking System which offers a sixpoint
multi-lock solution with PAS 24 certification,
complete with 240 hours Corrosion Resistance to
the BS EN 1670:2007 standard, and endurance
testing in excess of 100,000 cycles.
PVC-U flush systems
Designed to replicate the aesthetic design of
timber windows, PVC-U flush systems have
become increasingly popular in recent years,
offering homeowners a more premium, timeless
aesthetic with modern performance benefits.
Offering a slimmer and more streamlined
appearance, the flush external finish makes for
a high-end look, whilst being cost-effective and
easier to maintain in comparison to traditional
timber windows. The timber effect can be
enhanced with coloured and woodgrain-effect foils.
ERA’s recently launched Fab&Fix Monkey Tail
and Teardrop key locking window handles were
designed specifically to suit flush windows,
resulting in that premium, sophisticated aesthetic
associated with timber windows. Available in
Hardex Chrome, Hardex Gold, Hardex Graphite,
Hardex Pewter and Antique Black, within its
Perfectly Matching home range, these handles
were created to match a vast selection of
hardware in the Fab&Fix Heritage collection.
Both come with matching operating and
dummy stay bars to complete the look and
have been tested at ERA’s Test House to meet
the requirements of BS EN 1670 Grade 5 for
Corrosion Resistance. This standard sees that
hardware is tested for weather resistance for 480
hours, enduring 25,000 cycles.
Of course, this is a plus point for customers
choosing long-lasting PVC-U flush casement
windows, given that they can rest assured that
their accompanying window furniture will also
stand the test of time.
While homeowners choose windows and doors
to suit their personal taste and align with the
latest property trends, enlisting excellent security
solutions that allow for easy operation must also
be an important consideration, with guidance
from their fabricator or manufacturer.
Luckily, ERA offers a versatile choice of hardware
solutions, including locks, handles and hinges,
developed over the last 185 years to complement
window and door trends, whilst ensuring
customers have the best in secure solutions for
ultimate peace of mind.
WHY QUALITY MATTERS
Michael Hewitt, Sales Director at Durham-based AT Precision, explains why precision
manufacturing is the cornerstone of its long-term success.
W
hile some manufacturers prioritise
short-term gains, at AT Precision, we
understand the true value of precisioncrafted
components, something which has set us
apart in years gone by.
AT Precision’s Michael Hewitt
It’s also a commitment to long-term reduced
costs, enhanced safety and reliability, improved
sustainability, and customer satisfaction that has
seen us forge ahead.
No compromise on quality
At AT Precision, we manufacture the Everglide
range of bi-fold hardware and aluminium profile, as
well as the Everseal range of high-quality gaskets.
These products are meticulously manufactured
and built to last, and because they’re made
in-house, come at a more affordable price
compared to other suppliers, ultimately saving
our customers money down the line.
But a lower price doesn’t mean a compromise on
quality – we prioritise building parts that are not
just functional, but exceptional, with our rigorous
quality control processes ensuring minimal defects
and extended product lifespans, saving our
customers significant resources in the long run.
Improved sustainability
At AT Precision, we recognise that quality
doesn’t come at the expense of the environment,
and therefore, we prioritise using recycled
materials and minimising waste throughout our
manufacturing processes.
This commitment to sustainable practices is
further exemplified through our new in-house
recycling plant, where our new Recycled Thermal
Reinforcement (RTR) bars are manufactured.
Made from 100% recycled PVC-U, the RTR bars
add strength and increased thermal performance
to windows, are quick and easy to install, and
boast a minimum lifespan of 35 years.
Customer satisfaction speaks volumes
At AT Precision, our dedication to customer
satisfaction goes beyond the quality of our
products. We believe in building strong
relationships with our customers, and that means
providing exceptional service throughout the
entire buying process. Our team is available to
answer questions and offer expert advice, no
matter how complex the project.
We also travel directly to customers throughout the
UK to provide on-site product support and training,
ensuring they get the most out of our hardware.
This commitment to comprehensive service
ensures our customers not only receive highperforming
products, but that they also have the
knowledge and support to use them effectively.
Partnering for success
AT Precision is more than just a manufacturer
– we are a trusted partner dedicated to helping
businesses achieve their goals. By prioritising
long-term value over short-term gains, we
empower our customers to build better, more
sustainable products.
In an industry that prioritises speed and cost,
AT Precision offers a refreshing alternative.
We believe that precision manufacturing is
the foundation for long-term success, and by
investing in quality, we deliver products that
are built to last, reducing overall costs and
environmental impact.
Our commitment extends beyond the products
themselves – our exceptional service ensures our
customers have the knowledge and support they
need to thrive.
'FIT & FORGET' WITH 25 YEAR FURNITURE GUARANTEE
VBH, the hardware specialist behind the greenteQ range, has announced a brand new guarantee that covers the greenteQ
residential door, patio door and window furniture range for up to 25 years.
The greenteQ furniture range has now been split into two separate groups. The stainless steel architeQ range covers furniture for
residential doors and patio doors, with the mainstream greenteQ suite covering the same but with the addition of window furniture. The
surface finish on greenteQ suite products has been increased to 20 years, with a 25 year guarantee available on architeQ furniture.
In addition to these extended guarantee periods, for ‘qualifying customers’, VBH will deal with any claims directly with the consumer,
‘leaving the fabricator and installer free to do what they do best; make and sell windows and doors’.
Dan Powell
Head of Brand at VBH, Dan Powell, said: “We have made our guarantee as transparent as possible. Depending on the product, it’s
20 or 25 years, and we will take care of the whole claim and replacement process direct with the consumer for qualifying customers, so they can fit greenteQ
and forget.” www.vbhgb.com
BRISANT LOCK 'FIRST TO PASS' SECURITY TEST UPDATE
Brisant-Secure says that its patented ALPS lock technology is the first to pass the 2024 security
test update introduced in January. This update will be used for 3* euro cylinder locks by Secured by
Design, PAS24 and Sold Secure Diamond.
The new 2024 standard will reassure door makers, installers, and homeowners that doors with 3* locks
continue to be the gold standard for door security.
Nick Dutton, CEO of Brisant-Secure, the creators of Ultion, said: “We are delighted to be the first to attain the
new security standard. The reason nobody else has achieved the standard is because it is so tough. We knew when we acquired the Deseo business earlier this
year that the ALPS (Always Locked Protection System) lock was close to achieving this new standard, so we focused on adding even more patented measures
to get the test result last week. It’s also proof of Brisant’s commitment to being first with a solution to new security attacks.” www.brisant-secure.com
DOUBLE DOOR LOCKING OPTIONS FROM WINKHAUS
Designed with ‘versatility and flexibility in mind’, Winkhaus UK’s double door multipoint locking systems are tested to comply with
PAS:24 and the Secured by Design initiative.
Compatible with all Winkhaus’ multipoint locking systems, FAB is a high-security slave door with an integrated two-way lever which engages two
Fire Safety Glass
GLASS PROCESSING & SEALED UNITS
WISE CHOICES
Steve Goodburn, Pyroguard’s Business Development Director, discusses the essential
considerations when selecting the right fire safety glass component for a fire-rated system.
Anyone within the fire safety industry will
know the importance of taking a system
approach, regardless of whether you are
fabricating a fire door unit or glazed partition.
Only when all individual components come
together in a tested and approved system can it
be guaranteed to offer the expected level of fire
protection. One of those components is of course
fire safety glass. However, with so many products
available on the market, how can you ensure that
you’re making the best choice?
Wired or clear?
Historically, wired glass was the original glass
of choice, commonly seen within fire doors and
partitions in schools and social housing. However,
while it can, and does, meet the required fire
safety and impact resistance regulations, wired
glass is fast becoming an obsolete product. As
well as being at the centre of a global supply
chain issue, it can also be prone to various
misconceptions, both by the general public
and those within the industry itself, due to the
presence of metal wire. This can often lead to
people viewing it as a stronger product, or as an
example of security glass, despite neither being
the case. In fact, wired glass often only has an
impact rating of 3B3 to EN12600.
Instead, there are a host of new clear fire safety
solutions that offer more, including enhanced
aesthetics and performance. Substituting wired
for clear glass can not only help achieve a higher
fire rated classification, but also deliver greater
“Stocked products that
are manufactured here
in the UK can mean
shorter lead times and
a lower carbon footprint
compared to imports”
impact resistance, acoustic ratings and light
transmission values, providing added levels of
performance.
Size matters
With the architectural and construction industries
in a constant state of evolution, changing design
trends and client demands can lead to increasingly
challenging fire safety applications. Due to the
popularity of glass as a building material, it’s
important to look for cuttable products that can
deliver exceptional fire protection even at larger
certified pane sizes and with a high tolerance to
variations in glazing media.
Take fire doors as an example. While traditionally
featuring a simple, rectangular strip of glass, it
has become increasingly common for doorsets to
feature larger pane sizes, a side glazed partition,
or even an elegantly designed top-lite.
When speed counts…
In a competitive market, the speed and
availability of cuttable fire safety glass is critical,
with any issue in the supply chain potentially
leading to major delays further down the line. To
avoid this, consider looking for stocked products
that are manufactured and processed here in the
UK. As well as supporting the country’s economy,
it can also mean shorter lead times for your
fabrication business and a lower carbon footprint
compared to those imported from overseas.
Preparing for the future
As we look ahead to the future, it’s important
that we all take a proactive approach and
actively work to safeguard our businesses
against potential industry shifts. One example
of this is the recent discussions around a
potential transition from British Standards (BS)
to European Standards (EN). If actioned, this
will mark a significant change for the industry,
particularly within the timber door market, which
has long relied on BS standards for testing.
While undoubtedly a positive step forward in
terms of fire safety, the adoption of EN standards
is renowned for posing more rigorous testing
requirements. As a result, any shift from BS to
EN could necessitate the redesign and retesting
of numerous products, potentially leading to the
temporary removal of door systems from the
market during this transitional phase.
At Pyroguard, we’ve been testing to the EN
standard for many years, including Pyroguard
Advance, our new, high-performance fire safety
glass. Certified for use across a wide range of
steel and timber profiles and described as the
‘next generation’ of cuttables, it provides EW
classification with a fire resistance of 30 or 60
minutes, even at larger certified pane sizes.
Krakowski, Technology Development Director at
Press Glass, “And we are of course competitive.”
High performing logistics
The cooperation between Press Glass and LiSEC
goes back almost 30 years. “From the very first
facility, we bought high-end technology from
LiSEC. Back then, that was not a common thing
on the Polish market,” recalls Mr Krakowski. “We
are very transparent about building long-term
partnerships with our suppliers. For us, a good
partnership is mutually beneficial, allowing us to
meet challenges and solve problems together.”
When Press Glass planned their most automated
facility to date, they once again trusted LiSEC. Mr.
Krakowski, continues: “Our goal was to create a copy
& paste facility, which Press Glass can reproduce
in any new location. At Nowogard we looked into
every process and worked out all the kinks.”
Located in north-western Poland not far from the
Baltic Sea, Press Glass Nowogard operates six
cutting lines: one fully automatic laminated glass
cutting line and one additional lami cutting bridge
as well as five monolithic cutting tables. The six
lines are fed by a gantry system on one end, and
they feed into two large buffer systems on the other
end. Each buffer in turn supplies two IG lines.
Buffering and sorting play crucial roles in
optimising the material flow and machine
utilisation. Intralogistics ensures process stability
and reliable supply during various processing
steps, even with different glass types. For
instance, only the uncoated side of coated glass
is touched, preserving the coating. A slightly tilted
angle (approximately 2°) during glass transport
also protects the coating. LiSEC offers highquality
systems, available 24/7 with minimal
maintenance, accommodating various glass sizes
and shapes.
Project challenges
Looking back on the project, Mr Krakowski
remembers the challenges, “The schedule was
very tough. In 2017 the market was very strong
and customer demand was high. We already
had production on the lines while we were still
fine-tuning the machines and while the software
developments were still being tested. From the
first IG element off the line, it took about two to
three years until everything was working to our
full satisfaction.”
But those challenges did not come without
rewards. “Right now, I can say that this is our
most efficient facility in terms of production per
shift per person, so we produce more glass with
fewer operators. And we have the lowest losses
in glass, due to the automation – we largely
eliminated manual handling – but also due to
better internal logistics. We have fewer quality
issues, fewer claims, fewer problems.”
The Nowogard site supplies 15 – 20 % of Press
Glass’ total residential production volume.
Mr Krakowski highlights another benefit of the
sorting system: “Our customers have very high
demands on the sequence of the glass sheets
on the racks, different types of labels, different
shipment days, etc. – a lot of different, small
things we need to deliver. This is helping quite
significantly: We produce pretty much 99% on
time. And if something goes wrong, we have a
partner that we can call in, and they come over
quite fast and solve the issue.”
UK development
With the Nowogard site up and running, Mr
Krakowski and his team are already working on
new projects. The next development with LiSEC
is being realised in the UK, combining three
facilities in Wales under one roof. “Due to the
softer market, we have more time to develop
things, which is good, but on the other hand, the
pressure is required to make it faster. It’s always
a matter of finding the balance.”
Looking back on his own 12 years working
at Press Glass, Mr Krakowski sums up his
experience with LiSEC: “At some point, we had
to make the strategic decision to diversify our
machine and software suppliers, which provides
us with an interesting test environment within
our own group of companies. For me, there are
not many suppliers that can deliver complete and
robust solutions that work 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.”
Still, working under those kinds of conditions,
something can go wrong. “And it will go wrong
eventually, inevitably,” Mr Krakowski speaks
from experience. “Then you need somebody who
“Investing in renewable energy is pretty
much the only direction you can go”
can support you. In our company, many people
on the technical team and the production teams
have more than 20 years of experience. They
need someone on the other side who knows what
they’re talking about. A reliable partner that
knows how to solve your issue, or who’s at least
willing to sit down and find the solution together
with us. In that way, we consider LiSEC reliable.”
Automation and sustainability
Mr Krakowski’s opinion about markets and
industry changes is: “The biggest change we
and everyone else surely observes on the Polish
market is that automation is coming and of
course digitalisation is coming. For 10, almost
20 years we have been talking about industry
4.0. It used to be unclear how it would look. Now
Nowogard is our first facility with this degree
of automation, and automation has factored
in all our projects since. Beside better quality
and higher efficiency, we also want to utilise
manpower in the best way possible, which means
removing heavy work such as lifting glass many
times over.
“Another thing more and more of our customers
– especially on the Scandinavian market –
request is detailed information on the production
process, for example: How much power was
used to produce this IG? What was the water
consumption? Which renewable resources were
used, how high was the share of green energy?
So, we of course get all the required certifications.
We also add photovoltaic installations on
every new project, as well as any older facility
where it’s possible. Our latest production in
Lithuania, for example, is almost fully powered
by photovoltaics. Investing in renewable energy is
pretty much the only direction you can go.”
NEW RECYCLING PLANT AT THERMOSEAL
Thermoseal Group has invested in a new recycling plant that will reduce the amount of manufacturing waste
going to landfill.
Situated at the company’s Wigan factory, the recycling plant can handle all lengths of Thermobar warm edge,
turning them back in pellets that can be reused in the manufacturing process.
Sales Director, Mark Hickox, said: “We have always been able to recycle the core material of Thermobar
– polypropylene – but if it had the barrier tape attached, it would have to go to landfill. Our new recycling equipment
can remove the backing tape from the finished Thermobar, which means that any waste created during the extrusion
setup process can now be shredded and reused. We can add up to 20% of the normal compound without any loss
of performance, and it means that we send zero plastic waste in all the Thermobar production. The plant is also
powered by a solar PV system that we installed last year, so we are minimising our emissions in the process.”
The new investment forms part of the company’s ongoing sustainability strategy. www.thermosealgroup.com
SPECIALIST PILKS GLASS ENHANCES CROP GROWTH
A new study by The University of Lincoln, in collaboration with Pilkington United Kingdom, has revealed how
specialist glass designed for commercial greenhouses can increase crop yield by more than a third.
The research investigated the impact of different glass products on plant growth, light transmission, and the
temperature of environments within glasshouses. The findings will help to enhance glasshouse operations in agriculture
to support greater crop yields and food security.
Researchers experimented with the growth of lettuce and basil in two separate glasshouses over a three-week
period. Produce was grown in one glasshouse using specialist glass Pilkington HortiHaze, which was then compared to
produce grown in a glasshouse using standard float glass. The study uncovered that the weight of produce grown under
Pilkington HortiHaze was 35% greater than the produce grown under standard glass. This is in part due to Pilkington
HortiHaze maintaining light transmission which encourages greater photosynthesis. www.pilkington.com/en-gb/uk
LOW CARBON GLAZING USED AT CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
Low carbon glass, manufactured by Pilkington UK, has been used to fit-out offices at the glass industry’s
centre of excellence, ‘ensuring the workspace represents the future it is striving to create’.
Glass Futures is a not-for-profit organisation working to ‘revolutionise’ the glass manufacturing industry and to
drive sustainable innovation in the sector. Its £54m Global Centre of Excellence in St Helens, Merseyside forms
its new base, as well as a glassmaking testbed.
Pilkington Optiphon acoustic glass will provide noise reduction between the offices, allowing light into the
workspace while creating ‘peaceful zones and an environment conducive to concentration’.
The glass used was produced during Pilkington UK’s world-first biofuel trial last year, in which it became the
world’s first flat glass manufacturer to fire its furnace on 100% biofuel, resulting in the creation of 165,000m 2
of low carbon glass. This means the building has a lower embodied carbon – the CO 2 emitted through its
construction, including in the production of the building materials. www.pilkington.com/en-gb/uk
'PROVE SUSTAINABILITY TO WIN COMMERCIAL JOBS'
Glass Express Midlands’ glass
offcuts are collected and returned to
its glass suppliers for recycling
Glass Express Midlands has warned that a failure to ‘prove your sustainability credentials’ in the commercial
sector ‘can see you lose out on lucrative contracts’.
Glass Express Midlands’ MD, Arun Photay, said: “Being able to prove that you are actively reducing your carbon
footprint has become a key process when being awarded major contracts. What’s more, architects and specifiers want
to see active measures, not schemes where the results cannot be properly verified, such as carbon offsetting.”
Arun explained that Glass Express Midlands is taking a proactive approach to sustainability because “it is the right
thing to do” and “because we know that it secures business for us.”
Arun says that ensuring sustainability is built into every process at Glass Express Midlands “puts us front and centre
when bidding for high profile contracts because we can prove that we are reducing our impact on the environment, while
creating opportunities for our customers.” glassexpressmidlands.co.uk
PYROGUARD BALUSTRADES: 'PERFECT' CHOICE
Pyroguard Balustrades – a range of laminated fire safety glass, developed specifically for use in balustrade applications
over 11m – were recently chosen for London’s Deanston Wharf; a new development located on the River Thames.
Deanston Wharf will bring more than 760 new homes to the local area, comprising a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom
apartments; in addition to commercial space, leisure facilities and a luxury ‘sky lounge’. Developed by Oxley Holdings and
Ballymore Construction, Elite Architectural Systems was brought onto the project to design, supply and install a series of glazed
winter gardens – formed of an enclosed, glazed and ventilated balcony – on select apartments.
Noel Gilmartin, Operations Manager at Elite Architectural Systems, said: “Due to the high-rise setting, fire safety glass was
a critical requirement for the construction of the glazed balcony space. Knowing that Pyroguard was one of few manufacturers
to have a fire-rated glass solution that met the amended building regulations, we came to the conclusion with Q-Railing that
Pyroguard Balustrades was the perfect product for this project.” www.pyroguard.eu
CNC Troubleshooting
AUTOMATION
DON'T BE TOO PROUD TO ASK FOR HELP
Adam Jones, engineering supremo at UK tooling and machinery maker,
Jade Engineering, says that too many fabricators are spending large sums on the
latest, complex production machinery and all too often making costly errors.
CNC – or Computerised Numerical Control
– aided production machinery has been
around since the late ‘50s, with the
window and door frame sector adopting such
kit, for some 30 years or more. And whilst we
take advanced tech such as this for granted
these days, the original USPs that the machinery
companies used to sell in their clever new kit
to framemakers, remain pretty much the same
today: increased output and consistently high
quality of course; but lest we believe that labour
shortages are a new phenomenon created by
Brexit, one of the key drivers for fabricators to
purchase CNC machinery three plus decades
ago, was to reduce the burden of recruitment
through the lower manning levels these machines
required. Some things simply do not change.
Extraordinary sophistication
There can be few PVC-U frame fabricators in
the UK that do not have any CNC kit in their
factories, but these days the sophistication is
quite extraordinary and the range of abilities and
indeed costs, is huge. That also means, of course,
that the need to understand the processes and
requirements of a window frame production line
and especially its future requirements – and to
then match these with appropriate production
machinery – is often way beyond the capabilities
of even top flight production directors, let alone
smaller businesses. There is no shame in this –
the development of CNC machinery continues at a
lightening pace.
So believes Adam Jones, co-owner of machine
tool specialist Jade Engineering, whose views
are based upon his company’s position as the
window and door industry’s primary supplier of
machine tools for every type and brand of CNC
machine used by Britain’s fabricators.
“Over many years we have had first-hand
Above: Jade’s Adam Jones and Sean Mackey
experience of fabricators that might know their
own processes, but who have little experience
of how to translate this into specifying a
sophisticated CNC machining centre,” says
Adam. “You would be surprised how often
fabricators decide to invest a large sum of money
to step up their output, improve quality and then
base their decision on parameters and claims
that are provided solely by the manufacturer of
the machine they are looking at. That is not to say
that the machinery supplier will lie about their
product, but of course, there is no context, how
the machine performs against competitors. There
may be far more suitable alternatives.”
Independent advice
But who does the fabricator turn to for
independent advice? Perhaps unsurprisingly,
Adam Jones believes that he and his team of
specialists, including co-owner Sean Mackey,
have the experience and knowledge to provide
independent advice through a burgeoning division
of the company called Jade Consult: “Such is our
experience of resolving issues relating to CNC
frame production and with a growing client base
as a result, we are frequently asked to evaluate,
specify and commission whole integrated
production lines for fabricators as well as advise
on bottle neck and other problems.
“Rather than being the result of a strategic
decision, following the increasing numbers of
calls we were receiving from companies that
were experiencing problems after the event, we
thought how much better it would be if we spoke to
fabricators before the purchase of new equipment.
And so Jade Consult was born. It is the fastest
growing division of our company,” explained Adam.
Despite the seemingly unshakeable pessimism
that seems to shroud Britain currently, many
fabricators are investing to make their production
facilities more flexible whilst others remain
optimistic and are looking for growth: “Whilst the
retail sector is down currently, many companies
are continuing to invest in their infrastructure.
Although retail sales remain slower, other
segments of the window and door industry, such
as commercial work, remain buoyant. And of
course, the constant battle to recruit and retain
good people, presents framemakers with the
justification to invest in new plant.
“But,” warns Adam, “often the correct
specification for a fabricator’s needs is much
simpler than first believed, with companies
spending a great deal more than they needed
to for the correct solution. There is no shame
in seeking specialist advice to ensure the
right choices are made for what amounts to
substantial investments and, of course, the future
wellbeing of the company. At Jade Consult we are
considering such decisions every day, for a range
of requirements and budgets. It’s what we do; we
are here to help.”
JFP REVAMPS PRODUCTION WITH NEW LINE
John Fredericks (JFP) has revamped its production facility with a state-of-the-art, fully automated frame welding and
corner cleaning line, enabling it to service customer demand with even greater efficiency.
The Huddersfield-based window and door manufacturer reports that the new line has also sped up fabrication, increased
capacity, and optimised workforce structure.
Mark Dicconson, MD of JFP, said: “We’ve seen an increase in demand for foiled products and this is only going to continue
to rise, so we’ve made this latest manufacturing upgrade in advance of this. The set up is really, really impressive, with the
most advanced machine available. We’ve now got an URBAN SV 800 automatic corner cleaner fed by two URBAN AKS 6600
8-headed welders, all on a fully automated conveyor system, along with a transfer table and cooling racks for foiled products.
“Operating through barcode recognition, the system has been designed to recognise different profiles, whether foiled or not, and automatically enter the
profile size, thus removing the chance of human error. This enables absolute accuracy and consistency, and increases output.” www.johnfredericks.co.uk
NEW MD WILL TAKE BUSINESS 'TO THE NEXT LEVEL'
Steel reinforcement and profile roll-forming specialist Anglo has invested more than £1m in the
UK’s most advanced roll-forming line.
The new double-sided CNC line features 24 passes, making more and smaller adjustments to profile
angles in manufacture, reducing stress on the steel, and improving product quality. Introducing increased
precision in manufacture, it also allows Anglo to manufacture far more complex profile shapes.
Double-sided operation allows Anglo to significantly reduce tool change time, increasing efficiencies
and lowering costs; savings that its Managing Director, David Evans, says Anglo is passing on directly
to its customers: “It’s the best in British manufacturing technology. What’s unique about it is that it’s
a double-sided production line, which means that we no longer have tooling downtime. As we’re tooling
one part of the machine, the other side can be running. And when that side is completed, we can then
be rolling on the other side of the machine within about 10 minutes.” www.angloeuropeangroup.co.uk
UPDATED SYSTEMS GUIDANCE FOR LOGIKAL USERS
BM Aluminium has issued updated guidance to fabricators to ensure they get the most from their
LogiKal software installation. The guidance outlines the systems they need to have in place to run
LogiKal at its optimum performance, and more specifically to guarantee that they can install all
the necessary updates as soon as they are released.
Covering ‘all the essentials’, from PC specifications and disc space requirements to server speed and
capacity, there are clear, step by step instructions now on how to enable the necessary network sharing
and windows permissions and how to configure the firewall settings and anti-virus software exceptions.
The full updated guidance is at www.bmaluminium.co.uk/logikal-software-requirements and
customers can get direct support via the BM Aluminium support line on: 01684 856920.
EMMEGI REDEFINES 'ICONIC' 20-AXIS QUADRA CNC
Emmegi (UK) says +Quadra is the ‘next generation’ of its ‘iconic’ 20-axis modular Quadra CNC, which
can cut, drill and machine all in one single operation.
Designed to deliver greater volume, bigger capacity and faster speeds, Emmegi says the new +Quadra ‘does
everything that the original Quadra can do and more’, representing a ‘significant leap’ from the L0, L1, L2 and L3
versions of the original Quadra, ‘which have long set the standard for precision engineering in aluminium’.
As previously, there are four high frequency electro spindles for +Quadra L0 and six and eight for +Quadra
L1 and +Quadra L2, all housed within a sound-proofed cabin. Amongst the most ‘eye catching’ new features
are dynamic counterblocks which can be programmed to recognise the profiles being selected and automatically
adjust and set the vices without the need to set up individual counterblocks each time.
Details of the new +Quadra are at bit.ly/4amIxtJ
2 NEW STUGA ZX5 MACHINING CENTRES AT EMPLAS
Emplas has continued its multi-million pound investment in its state-of-the-art manufacturing
facility with the addition of two new Stuga ZX5 automated sawing and machining centres.
Installed in the fabricator’s main manufacturing facility, the two ‘next generation’ cutting and machining
centres bring new precision to window and door manufacture, while also significantly increasing capacity (up
to 800 windows each per week). The new ZX5s are built around an advanced rotary tooling ring with eight
high-speed spindles. This offers a 360º machining capability, maximising output with ‘V’ and ‘Y’ notches
produced on either side of the profile in a single pass.
The new sawing and machining centres build on the pre-existing capacity delivered by Emplas’ three
Schirmer machining and cutting centres, and a pre-existing Stuga. www.emplas.co.uk
AUTOMATION
FROM ENQUIRY TO INSTALLATION
Greg Beachim, Sales Manager at Cyncly, says the right software is key to delivering the
effective customer service needed to secure business for the long term.
It’s a cliché, but a chain is only as strong
as its weakest link. And in a manufacturing
environment, efficiency is constrained by
bottlenecks.
Typically, we think of those bottlenecks as being a
slow cutting and machining centre, or not enough
people assembling the windows, or even an
inefficient dispatch department. But in reality it is
any point along the enquiry-to-installation journey.
If you think a manufacturer’s responsibility ends
when the window is unloaded on site, you would
be missing a trick. We’ve created the ability
within our Zandi module for manufacturers
to offer more control over the manufacturing
process to their customers, which creates a more
streamlined journey from enquiry through to
installation, reducing error and saving money in
the process.
And this is being driven by demand, because
window companies are just as happy today to
manage their relationship with their supplier
via an online portal, rather like how they
would manage regular purchases via an online
store. This means fewer phone calls, allowing
customers to interact with manufacturers
whenever they want, while removing a potential
for errors to occur.
Our Zandi platform allows manufacturers to create
accounts for their customer where they can log in,
see any conversations, answer questions, pull up
order confirmations, confirm production dates, set
delivery dates, and issue invoices.
This also improves processes at the retail end,
because window companies are not isolated
from the manufacturing process. And because
everyone benefits from a joined up approach, you
are more likely to see repeat business as a result.
Thanks to Zandi, and the fully connected Window
Designer software platform, manufacturers can
“If you think a manufacturer’s
responsibility ends when the window is
unloaded on site, you would be missing a trick”
create workflows and streamline information based
on triggers and events, which then allows them to
remove paper from the operation altogether.
Whole operation overview
This results in products being manufactured
and dispatched at the optimal time – for both
manufacturer and customer. At every point
in the process, the window company can see
where their order is, and the manufacturer has
a complete overview of the whole operation,
ensuring that all parts work seamlessly together.
It reduces administration overheads. It minimises
staffing levels. And it promotes efficiency and
profitability at all levels.
Finally, by putting more control in the hands of
your customers, you are creating an environment
that makes it hard for them to leave, because
you ultimately save them more money than
alternative systems where they are alienated
from the manufacturing and delivery process.
This is where Cyncly excels as a business,
because Cyncly’s expertise extends out far
beyond design processing and optimisation
solutions for the manufacturing space. Cyncly is
focused on the different spaces within the home,
and how the homeowner’s buying journey is
simplified from initial enquiry all the way through
to installation.
And we are seeing this trend feed back up
through the supply chain, creating more
opportunities for manufacturers to better manage
the product’s journey from enquiry all the way
through to installation.
