Kingspan Welcome
I love watching Ulster play and so I am
really excited to run out onto the pitch
with the team.
My favourite player is Stuart McCloskey.
I enjoyed watching him playing for Ireland.
Welcome back to Kingspan Stadium,
the home of Ulster Rugby, as we gear
up for tonight’s URC clash against
Leinster Rugby.
Ulster has shown fantastic momentum in
recent URC matches, and fans are eagerly
eyeing play-off contention. Our home
games have been particularly dominant,
and a superb second half led to a 31-20
victory over the Scarlets in our last URC
away game. With the unwavering support
of Ulster fans, a win against a strong
Leinster side is within reach.
Before settling into your seats or finding
your spot on the terrace, we invite you to
join us in the fan zone for the Kingspan Try-
Cycle challenge. Participants will receive
a Kingspan/Ulster Rugby water bottle for
their efforts, and there are fantastic prizes
to be won, including a chance to travel
with the Ulster team and exclusive signed
merchandise.
As part of our global sustainability
initiative, Planet Passionate, we’re thrilled
to introduce two water bottle refill stations
to the stadium. Help us eliminate singleuse
plastics from Kingspan Stadium by
bringing your reusable water bottles to
the game.
With the stands at capacity and the
promise of sunny weather, tonight is sure
to be an unforgettable occasion, hopefully
culminating in another thrilling victory for
Ulster at Kingspan Stadium. SUFTUM!
I am excited to experience the
atmosphere and noise of the crowd as
we run onto the pitch with the team.
My favouite player is Iain Henderson.
I am delighted to welcome Leinster head
coach Leo Cullen, his staff, players and
supporters to Kingspan Stadium for tonight’s
penultimate league match in the BKT United
Rugby Championship. Equally welcome are
IRFU President Greg Barrett and his wife Lorna
and IRFU Chair of Management, Niall Rynne.
Having met up on a number of occasions
during the season, my wife Ruth and I are
particularly pleased that Leinster President
Billy Murphy and his wife Kathryn have made
the trip north to be with us tonight.
While Leinster sit comfortably in the league,
only a point behind the leaders Glasgow
Warriors, Ulster are currently sixth, just one
point clear of Edinburgh and Benneton, and
four in front of Connacht and the Lions. With
a seventh-place finish required to guarantee
qualification for both the knock-out stages of
the league and for next season’s Champions
Cup, every league point is of huge significance,
so we can expect an absorbing encounter in
tonight’s Interpro. Ulster go into the match
having won their last three games, two with
bonus points, so they will not lack confidence.
This will be strengthened by the welcome news
that Richie Murphy has signed up as head
coach until the end of the 2025/26 season.
On the occasion of our final scheduled home
game, our fans will have the opportunity to
say goodbye to a number of players who will
be leaving Ulster at the end of the season.
Luke Marshall, Billy Burns, Greg Jones, Will
Addison, Angus Curtis, Stephen Kitshoff, Dave
Ewers, James French and Shea O’Brien are
all moving on. While I thank all nine for their
contributions, I reserve a special thankyou to
Luke, who has spent his entire career at his
home province. As well as playing more than
one hundred and sixty times for Ulster, he also
played for Ireland on eleven occasions. I wish
all of them well for the future.
Also tonight, we will remember several friends
with connections to Ulster rugby who are sadly
no longer with us.
At Randalstown last Saturday, following
their win over Leinster, the Ulster Juniors
were crowned champions of the Junior Inter
Provincial Championship for the first time in
seven years, having recorded bonus-point
wins in all three games. Our congratulations
go to head coach Mike Orchin-McKeever, his
assistants Mark Neilly, Richie McCarter, Stephen
Crawford, Jeremy Ogle and to all the players
in the squad. They will make an appearance
on the pitch prior to the match tonight.
Despite the ups and downs of the senior side,
our supporters have remained extremely loyal
to the team, both at home and away. Last
Saturday, prior to the Scarlets game, I visited the
fan zone in Llanelli which had been organised
by the South Wales Supporters Club. The mood
there was extremely positive, the fans delighted
by the recent performances, especially by
some of the younger players. Therefore, I am
delighted to have this opportunity to thank all
of you for your tremendous support throughout
this season.
Tonight, the stadium is a sellout. The players
love playing at Kingspan Stadium and with a
full house of committed fans getting behind
the team, anything is possible. Thus, I would
urge all Ulster fans, for the final time at home
this season, to make your voices heard and,
of-course, to STAND UP FOR THE ULSTER
MEN.
Richie Murphy
Confirmed as
Head Coach
Following two months in the role on an
interim basis, Ulster Rugby announced
this week that Richie Murphy has signed
a two-year contract to remain in-charge
of the Senior Men’s team at the province.
Known for his ability to bring through
young talent, Richie arrived in Ulster
having successfully led the Ireland U20s
to two consecutive Six Nations wins as
Head Coach.
His involvement in the national set-up
extends back to 2013 when Richie joined
the Men’s team as Skills and Kicking
Coach, with achievements during that
time including Six Nations Championships
in 2013 and 2014, along with a Grand Slam
win in 2018.
Through his roles prior to arriving in Belfast,
Richie worked directly with all players of
national interest to develop their tactical
and technical capabilities, which brought
him into contact with many of the current
Ulster men.
With Richie’s experience in elite player
development, he is set to bring this skillset as
Head Coach to the province at a time when
the club’s focus is on developing a strong
base of young talent in the Senior Men’s
squad – with recent performances under his
leadership including home wins over Cardiff
and Benetton, and Saturday’s away victory
against Scarlets, showcasing Ulster’s pipeline
of young, homegrown talent.
Speaking on Richie’s appointment, Interim
CEO of Ulster Rugby, Hugh McCaughey,
said:
“We are delighted at Ulster Rugby to have
Richie committed to the province for the
next two seasons.
“Over the past couple of weeks, we
have had an insight into what Richie,
the coaching staff and squad have the
potential to achieve together, with today’s
announcement providing the stability
needed for this to continue.
“With a young squad, and a pipeline of
talent coming through our Player Pathway,
it’s an exciting time for the club as we look
to build the foundations that will set us up
for success in the years ahead. Richie has
vast experience in developing young players
and is ambitious to achieve success, so he is
a perfect fit for what we need.”
On confirming his role at Ulster Rugby,
Richie Murphy, added:
“I’m looking forward to continuing with
Ulster after a very enjoyable start to my
time with the club. I would like to thank
all of the support staff, especially Bryn
Cunningham, for helping me settle in.
“Bryn has been a big part of this process,
and I would like to thank him for all his
efforts in getting us to this point. It’s no
secret that I was keen to stay on in the
role of Head Coach with the province, as
I can see what is building here at Ulster
and how I can contribute to growing that
in the coming years.
“We have a very talented group at
Ulster and, together with a loyal
and dedicated supporter base, I’m
relishing the opportunity to see
what we can all achieve together.”
After the break, Ulster scored their first
try of the match, after Stuart McCloskey
powered through a gap in the Scarlets
defence. John Cooney converted to send
Ulster into a 6-10 lead.
Minutes after Ulster had their second as
Scarlets looked to attack. Mike Lowry
intercepted a pass to sprint into the
Scarlets territory and from the scrum 5m
out from the Scarlets line, Nick Timoney
bulldozed over for Ulster’s second.
Scarlets reduced the scoreline to 11
points, after Tomi Lewis ran through for a
converted try, but Ulster held on well in
the closing 10 minutes, with well-worked
lineouts from Tom Stewart under pressure
and the defence showing good discipline.
When the final whistle went, Ulster’s
players and staff went home happy after
the job was done.
Ulster secured their third BKT United Rugby
Championship victory in succession, with
a bonus-point victory over Scarlets at Parc
y Scarlets in Round 16.
Ulster jumped to sixth place in the URC table,
after a four try bonus point victory in Wales
against Dwayne Peel’s Scarlets side.
Ulster trailed 6-3 at half time, after being
thwarted by Scarlets defence on three
occasions, holding up three potential tries.
Sam Costelow stuck away two penalties for
the Welsh side, with John Cooney scoring
one for the away side.
After half-time, Ulster punished Scarlets
with four converted tries through Stuart
McCloskey, Nick Timoney, Dave McCann
and Jacob Stockdale, securing the bonuspoint
for Ulster.
Scarlets didn’t make it an easy half
themselves, with three tries of their own as
they pushed Ulster all the way in Llanelli.
Richie Murphy’s side went into the game
knowing a win would be vital as Ulster hint
down the play-off positions, starting the
match in seventh position.
It was a special occasion for Mike Lowry,
the flying full-back making his 100th
appearance for his province and leading
the side out.
In a cagey opening start to the game,
Scarlets took advantage of penalties to
put themselves six points to the good.
Ulster had their moments in the half, with
Cormac Izuchukwu, starting for the first
time at blindside flanker, being thwarted
three times in the half by the Scarlets
holding the ball up on the line.
It was an impressive rearguard effort, as
the Welshmen were down to 13 men at
the end of the half, after yellow cards to
Plumtree and Davies after their offences.
Ulster went into the break frustrated, but
knew they had showed enough attacking
threat to score in the second half.
Half-Time: Scarlets 6-3 Ulster
David McCann gave the province more
breathing space as the in-form flanker
finished off attacking pressure from
close range.
With the score at 6-24, Ulster were chasing
a bonus try. However the province were
pegged back a little by Scarlets, who were
keen to put on a show for the team’s final
home game of the season.
An attack saw their eight, Carwyn
Tuipulotu, ground for the home side
despite Ulster’s efforts.
Fitting with the back and forth nature
of the contest, Ulster got their bonuspoint
minutes later, with Jacob Stockdale
providing good width to Ulster’s attack
and running through to score on the wing
for his eighth URC try of the campaign.
It was just what the winger deserved
after an impressive high ball catch from
the restart.
Ulster came for a 5 point win and got
exactly that, with the province firmly in the
fight for play-off positions, as they face
interprovincial rivals, Leinster Rugby, in
the final home match of the regular season
next Saturday.
Full-Time: Scarlets 20-31 Ulster
Ulster Juniors win Junior Interprovincial
Series with Three Bonus Point Victories
The architect behind Ulster’s success,
Head Coach Mike Orchin-McKeever,
emphasised the importance of
fostering a positive team environment.
“My aim was that
everyone enjoyed the
experience, encouraged
to be themselves,
feel valued and
create a memory to
look back on,”
he shared. Their training sessions
incorporated more fun activities and
team-building exercises than video
analysis, allowing the players to develop
a strong sense of camaraderie.
Captain Joel McBride echoed
Coach Orchin-McKeever’s sentiments,
highlighting the team spirit that fuelled
their performance. “It’s a privilege to lead
out any Ulster side,” he said. “It was a really
enjoyable and a talented group to be a
part of.” He was particularly surprised by
the unwavering support the team received
throughout the series, especially during
the away trip to Munster. McBride said,
“Getting to know players off the pitch,
a great win and then capped off with
celebrations on the way home,” stands
as his most cherished memory from the
experience.
This victory is a testament to the
dedication and talent of the Ulster
Junior squad, the coaching staff, and
everyone who contributed to their
success. It marks the culmination of a
dominant series and brings the Junior
Interprovincial Championship trophy
back to Ulster after a seven-year hiatus.
Congratulations to the entire team for
this remarkable achievement!
Ulster Rugby is celebrating after the
Ulster Juniors secured a convincing
victory in the 2023/24 Junior
Interprovincial Championship.
The final match against Leinster Juniors
on home soil in Randalstown, saw a
thrilling display of Ulster’s dominance,
culminating in a well-deserved 34-22 win.
This victory marks a significant milestone,
bringing the trophy back to the province
for the first time in seven years.
The entire series showcased the
exceptional teamwork and talent nurtured
within the Ulster Junior ranks. Their path
to victory wasn’t without challenges. The
final encounter against Leinster was a
tense battle from the very beginning, but
with tries from Jack Gamble, Matthew
McDowell, Peter Gillespie and Dean Dillon
secured the third consecutive bonus
point win for the Ulster side.
21
that I was to be involved on finals weekend
I was excited to get stuck in. The build-up
and buzz with the Women’s AIL has been
electric this season and the fact the game
was to be at the Aviva and live on TV left
me eager to enjoy being in the middle at
what was sure to be a great game.”
When we sat down with Stuart he talked
about his pre-game preparation, it was
evident his preparation was very thorough,
in the run up to game day. Stuart told
us about adapting his approach to
accommodate the unique dynamics of a
televised match, with a TMO he commented
“I took some time to prepare for different
incidents and reflected on my process and
communication with my TMO”.
through processes and scenarios before
kick off and how the team of four were
going to work together.
Mark’s moment came with a crucial red card
decision early in the game, showcasing his
astute judgment and the importance of his
role in upholding the integrity of the game.
He comments “getting involved as a TMO
is usually always going to be something
really big in the game. Normally involving
a card and this game was no different. In
this game, when the moment came, the
team of four followed our processes and
came to the decision and applied the law.”
Referees’ Corner
We welcome Andrea Piardi (FIR) and his
team of officials to Kingspan Stadium
for this evening’s BKT United Rugby
Championship Round 17 inter-provincial
clash against Leinster.
As always, Ulster Rugby would like to
remind spectators to respect the decisions
of the match officials at all times.
In this Referee Corner, we take a look at the
Ulster Society of Rugby Football Referees
(USRFR) officials who were ‘on duty’ at
the Aviva Stadium in Dublin recently in
the Energia All-Ireland League finals.
Two USRFR match officials showcased
their excellence at the Dublin venue two
weekends ago. Mark Patton and Stuart
Douglas, both seasoned officials with
impressive journeys domestically and on
the IRFU national panel, were selected
with pivotal roles in facilitating two
exhilarating finals.
Mark Patton
USRFR President, Alistair McGowan,
commended the achievements of Mark
and Stuart, highlighting their contributions
to the prestigious All-Ireland Finals.
“Fantastic to see the USRFR continuing
their strong support on the National
Panel. In particular the All-Ireland Finals,
with Stuart in charge of the mighty clash
between UL Bohemian and Railway Union
in the Women’s match, and Mark with his
appointment as TMO for the Terenure
College and Cork Constitution in the Men’s
match. No doubt two excellent servants
of the game and they are nowhere near
finished yet.”
USRFR Referee Stuart Douglas, took to
the middle of the Aviva pitch as the referee
in charge for the Women’s AIL final.
Stuart’s journey to the National Panel
spans an impressive 15 years. Commenting
on his selection he said “when I found out
Both UL Bohemian and Railway Union
proved to be strong finalists and amidst
the thrill of a high-scoring game, Stuart and
his team officiated a game with excellence,
demonstrating their collective preparation
and officiating skills with precision and
confidence. Stuart said “It was a brilliant
game with 80 points being scored, so
plenty of tries by both teams! The players
were great to work with and it was great
at different moments of downtime to just
enjoy the moment with them.”
After Stuart had blown the final whistle,
another USRFR match official got ready
for his fixture. Mark Patton served as the
Television Match Official (TMO) for the
AIL Division 1A final between Terenure
College and Cork Constitution.
Mark is a well-established member of the
USRFR and has just concluded his 17th
year on the IRFU National Panel.
Reflecting on his appointment, Mark said
“I was absolutely delighted to be selected.
The division 1A final is the pinnacle of
domestic rugby in Ireland and it’s a great
way to finish the AIL season off in the Aviva.
I was also really chuffed to be working
with Leinster Referee Andrew Cole, as I
hadn’t worked with him before.”
His preparation was meticulous,
collaborating closely with his fellow
officials to ensure seamless coordination
on match day. As a new team of officials,
they got together the week prior to talk
The performances of Stuart and Mark at
the Aviva Stadium serve as a testament
to the dedication, professionalism, and
expertise embodied by referees within the
USRFR. Their exemplary conduct on the
field not only enhances the quality of the
game but also inspires future generations
of referees to strive for excellence in every
match they officiate.
USRFR are delighted that following a recent
meeting of the IRFU Referee Committee,
two additional USRFR referees have been
promoted to the National Referee Panel
for the 2024/25 season. Chris Elliott and
Ross Whitfield, two excellent officials
who’s appointment to the panel sees the
USRFR representation increase to twenty
active referees, who travel across around
all four provinces and beyond in service of
the game. Matthew Kilgore will also be on
the National Panel Development Group at
the start of next season.
Newforge Taggers’ Rugby
Festival Resounding Success
The Newforge Taggers Rugby Festival was
a resounding success, with seven clubs from
across Ulster and Ireland in attendance on
Saturday 11 May. Approximately 140 players
participated in the festival, showcasing their
tag rugby skills.
Over 15 teams battled it out in six exciting
matches, putting their training into practice.
The U15 teams focused on developing their skills
through drills and fun games, all while forging
new friendships with their fellow players.
The hosts would also like to give special thanks
to James Hume from Ulster Rugby, who took
time out of his day to attend the festival. James
was happy to chat with the players and pose for
selfies, creating memories that will no doubt last
a lifetime. Keith Crossan from Wooden Spoon
also deserves recognition for his contribution to
the medal ceremony.
The atmosphere was electric throughout the
day, with plenty of smiles, excited chatter, and
laughter among players, families, and coaches.
The highlight of the day was seeing the sense of
community and camaraderie that rugby fosters.
The festival would not have been possible
without the generous support of sponsors,
Hafners and Wooden Spoon. The organisers
are grateful for their contribution, which allows
these tournaments to play a vital role in fostering
not only the development of rugby skills but
also the social and team-building aspects that
are so important in the sport. The players were
particularly excited to meet the sponsors and
have the opportunity to chat with them during
the day.
Overall, the Newforge Taggers Rugby Festival
was a fantastic day filled with rugby, fun, laughter,
and new friendships. It was a day that will be
remembered by all who were involved.
LEINSTER
Having gone without any silverware for the past
couple of seasons, they will be on a mission as
they face up to life after Johnny Sexton.
With their outstanding strength in depth, you
know they will be right up there at the peak of
the table.
Hugo Keenan
Keenan made his debut off the bench in
November 2016 against Zebre Parma, and
immediately established himself as the
first choice 15 for Leinster.
Now with 39 international caps for
Ireland, 5 of which were during the
Rugby World Cup, Keenan is an
established player, renouned for his
speed in attack and immense aerialgame
under the high ball.
He has only featured 8 times for
Leinster in this season’s BKT URC, but
will be looking to see out the season on
a high, with the Investec Champions Cup
final and BKT URC playoffs on the horizon.
GUESS WHO?!
John Cooney
39
Mike Lowry
Ulster Rugby Centurion
On making his 100th appearance
It’s such an honour, a few boys gave me some nice words before
the game, I actually started to tear up a bit myself. I suppose
it shows how good a group the boys are to help me through,
they made it really special for me today and I can’t thank
people enough. Family, friends, the team, support
staff, everyone. It’s an absolute privilege to play
for Ulster and hopefully many more to come.
Favourite match?
So many to pick to be honest. The Racing 92 one stands
out from a couple of years ago, to get us qualified. For
me personally, that Northampton game. I felt that game
was a stepping stone for me to get into the Ireland squad,
so it really stands out. That season was class, especially in
Europe. A few Interpro wins both home and away, but if I
had to pick one, probably Northampton away!
What do you remember about your debut
against Munster?
It was probably one to forget to be honest! It was
an honour to play for Ulster for the first time but it
didn’t go down too well (a 64-7 loss at Thomond Park).
Thankfully I’ve had many matches since then and have
had a few chances to redeem myself over the further 99
appearances!
You’ve scored plenty of special tries during that 100, is
there one that sticks out as your favourite?
That’s a tough one! Definitely a few, Northampton Saints
away in Europe was good, I got a couple of scores there.
That got us into the last 16 of Europe. Cardiff away,
maybe not a fantastic game but still important. My first
You also love to make a few big tackles now and
again, is there one tackle where you thought ‘I
minced him!’?
I don’t really get to ‘mince’ anyone too often with
my size or weight! I think I was so fired up for that
Racing 92 game at home that I hit Leone Nakarawa
pretty early before he got the steam behind him. I stuck
my studs into the ground and pushed him back a bit! That
was one tackle I really enjoyed.
In the 100, who would be the toughest opponent you have
came across as a player?
There’s been a good few. Antoine Dupont, Cheslin Kolbe,
Johnny Sexton – some big names but all completely
different players but all equally as tough to play against.
Leinster this weekend – how big a test is it for the team?
There is no bigger challenge than Leinster. An
Interpro derby, I’m sure Kingspan Stadium will be
rocking and it’s another massive game for us. The
table is so tight with victories in and around us last
weekend. Every point is vital. Every game is nearly a
play-off. I can’t wait for it.”
THANK YOU
This week, Ulster Rugby confirmed that
nine players, with a combined 420 caps
of service, will be departing at the end
of this season.
Supporters will have the opportunity to
say a fond farewell to the players at the
game tonight.
Luke Marshall (166 – retired)
Greg Jones (44)
Known for his creative kicking game,
the fly half has been a regular for Ulster
since he joined in 2018. A native of Bath,
but Irish-Qualified through his paternal
grandfather with seven Ireland caps
to his name, Burns made his debut for
Gloucester as a 17-year-old. He makes the
move to Munster Rugby from next season.
Angus Curtis (25)
After impressing with the Irish U20s,
Curtis proved his trademark ability at
both fly half and centre, after making
his senior debut for Ulster in 2018.
Sadly, the 25-year-old Zimbabwe native
retired at the start of this year from
professional rugby with immediate effect
on medical advice.
James French (4)
A tighthead prop who joined the province
from Munster Rugby, French made his
Ulster debut against Zebra Parma in the
BKT United Rugby Championship. Multitalented,
the 25-year-old wore the green
jersey at U20s level, and was also a former
All-Ireland shotput champion.
The definition of what it means to be one of
the Ulster men, Marshall has represented
his home province for the last fifteen
years, after being recruited into the
Academy set-up. He made rapid strides
to break into the Ulster and Ireland sides,
and it wasn’t long before he was named
the 2012-13 PRO12 Young Player of the
Season. On the pitch, he is a combative,
strong-running mid-fielder with great
rugby intelligence – and off the field, he
has played an important role in the Senior
Men’s leadership group for some years.
Billy Burns (111)
Known for his creative kicking game,
the fly half has been a regular for Ulster
since he joined in 2018. A native of Bath,
but Irish-Qualified through his paternal
grandfather with seven Ireland caps
to his name, Burns made his debut for
Gloucester as a 17-year-old. He makes the
move to Munster Rugby from next season.
Will Addison (41)
Joining Ulster in the summer of 2018, after
a seven-year stint at Sale Sharks where he
made over a 100 appearances, Addison
went on to impress in the Ulster jersey
at full-back and centre. However, in 2021,
he sustained a long-term injury, which
kept him out of action for two years. He
is currently making-up for lost time, with
recent impressive performances including
a try-scoring performance in the recent
home win over Benetton.
Players will meet supporters, sign
autographs, and pose for photos
outside the players’ entrance at the
back of the Grandstand, approximately
15 minutes after full time.
Steven Kitshoff (14)
Kitshoff joined Ulster after winning
his second Rugby World Cup in Paris
with South Africa. Nicknamed ‘Spicy
Plum’, the South African showcased his
scrummaging skills in his performances
for the province this season. Last month, it
was confirmed that Kitshoff would return
to DHL Stormers – the club he captained
before arriving in Belfast.
Dave Ewers (14)
Capable of playing anywhere across the
back row, Ewers came to Belfast for the
2023/24 season, after spending thirteen
years with Exeter Chiefs in the English
Premiership. Ulster fans have been able to
enjoy his powerful carrying and defensive
work-rate in the white jersey.
Shea O’Brien (1)
O’Brien landed his chance of a professional
contract with Ulster when he attracted
attention playing AIL rugby for City of
Armagh RFC. Last summer, the 24-yearold
graduated from Queens University
Belfast with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Medicine, and went on to make his Ulster
debut in the 20-19 festive victory last
December over Interpro rival, Connacht
Rugby, in front of a home crowd.
On the players departing the province,
Bryn Cunningham, Head of Rugby
Operations and Recruitment, said:
“On behalf of everyone at Ulster Rugby, I
would like to say thank-you to the players
that will be leaving the club at the end
of the season.
“Despite all being at various stages of their
careers, with some having spent many
years at the club and others at the start
of their professional rugby, it is important
to acknowledge the positive impact that
each individual has made on the club, both
on and off the pitch and in terms of their
professionalism day in, day out.”
LEINSTER
CHALLENGE
TO MURPHY’S
LAW
Guest Article: Rod Nawn
weaknesses by parachuting Murphy in
on an initial interim basis will shock noone.
Since preparing to move into the
seat being vacated by David Nucifora,
a powerful and successful driver of the
success enjoyed by Ireland in the last
decade, the legendary Ulster out-half
has diligently travelled up and down the
length and breadth of the country.
While the departing Nucifora kept a low, chill
public profile, he was determined to shape
the sport in Ireland in his own, sometimes
controversial, way. Humphreys is no less
focussed on his overarching responsibility
to the health and growth of the game all over
Ireland. In the last few months he’s visited
each Province, absorbing the concerns
and hopes of those at Thomond Park, The
Sportsground and in Dublin.
While the roof at Old Trafford continues
to leak one gaping gap in Ulster Rugby’s
structure has been filled.
Richie Murphy’s condensed audition to
take the Head Coach reins on a permanent
basis resulted in this week’s announcement
that he had signed a two-year deal.
His immediate reward? To develop a
strategy to beat the winning machine
that is Leinster, Investec Champions Cup
finalists next weekend and perennially the
dominant domestic force in Ireland and in
the BKT United Rugby Championship.
His immediate remit for the rest of this season
is to secure a top eight URC finish and a
spot in the play-offs next month. Murphy’s
CV is an impressive one, particularly as an
integral part of the full Ireland set-up under
Joe Schmidt, and then as Head Coach of
back-to-back Under 20 Six Nations Grand
Slam champions in 2022 and 2023.
Already he has roved an approachable
figure to the Ulster public, his relaxed
personality apparently the fit needed in a
camp too familiar with tumult and upset.
Leinster, of course, is a major hurdle in the
quest for the play-offs, and Leo Cullen’s
selection riches means he might not
necessarily risk all of those he has in mind
to face Toulouse at the Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium next Saturday.
But its resources are so deep that Murphy will
not plan for anything but an internationalladen
matchday squad arriving at Kingspan
Stadium. A nine-try mauling of Ospreys at
the RDS last week by a starting team which
could afford to have the likes of Keenan,
Ringrose, Gibson-Park, Sheehan, Conan,
and Ryan in reserve, demonstrates not just
pre-eminence but astute development,
recruitment, and coaching.
Ulster is, however, seeking a double over
its erstwhile rivals, having wrested victory
earlier in the season in Dublin.
It’s an intriguing clash this Saturday evening
as Ulster’s mini revival of its URC fortunes
has definitely restored some confidence
in the playing squad. True, the home wins
over Cardiff and Benetton and the away
success at Scarlets last Sunday included
some uneven phases and too many errors
to satisfy the new man in charge and his
coaching team.
But with a daunting visit to Thomond Park
to conclude the regular URC season in
prospect, a win over Leinster, and a growing
quality in performance, would augur well
for an extended campaign for supporters
and players alike.
That David Humphreys, the new
Performance Director Designate for the
IRFU, along with colleagues, took such
decisive action to stall Ulster’s palpable
In Ulster, there are rather obvious parallels
with 2009 when Brian McLaughlin, with
his outstanding record in developing
youngsters, followed Matt Williams into
the Head Coach role. It was, ironically,
Humphreys, in overall charge at Ulster in
2009, who decided against expensively
imported hired hands and to have
McLaughlin oversee a transition to more
serene waters.
Times do indeed change and now the IRFU is
the most important hand on the Ulster tiller,
and so far, it has made the right decisions,
bloody though some were. Murphy has
already very publicly told supporters there
will be no rush for the marquee players
to arrive at Kingspan Stadium, and that
he knows from his previous job that he is
reuniting with some excellent athletes.
David McCann and Reuben Crothers are
just two obvious graduates of his Under 20
sides and there are others who will welcome
the new man in charge. Harry Sheridan,
Cormac Izuchukwu, and a raft of Academy
graduates will surely become staples in the
senior team, and established players such
as Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, Mike
Lowry, Tom O’Toole, John Cooney, and Nick
Timoney will find the new Head Coach a
refreshing breeze in pre-season.
51
But the immediate focus is, of course,
the arrival of Leinster this weekend, and
though skipper Iain Henderson and James
Hume are notable absentees, there will be
a confident if realistic mood in the Ulster
dressing room.
Rob Herring, Alan O’Connor, Timoney and
Cooney will take a prominent role against
the visitors, and Billy Burns’ farewell
appearance at Kingspan Stadium would
be so embellished if he could repeat the
masterclass in kicking out-of-hand which
he delivered at the RDS in January.
Ulster against Leinster is always the jewel
fixture of the season, and the ‘Sold Out’
signs have been up for days in advance of
the latest episode in the rivalry.
Van der Flier, Byrne, Larmour, Gibson-
Park, Porter, and Furlong are players of
real quality, fired in the red-hot arenas of
club and international rugby. It is a starry
roster Leo Cullen can boast but he and
they are well aware that in white jerseys
are performers who have undoubted class
and just need the spark provided by the
changes at the top.
There will be a wonderfully colourful and
noisy atmosphere in what promises to
be good conditions. Attacking rugby is
instinctive to both squads but it is in the
forward battle and in the execution of basic
skills in defence that the tone will be set.
Murphy has already garnered the best
wishes of his public, his players and coaches
appear upbeat, and that improved mood is
a good base for moving forward. A playoff
spot, of course, is Ulster’s immediate
target and achieving that would be a spur
to everyone on and off the pitch.
On an evening when some players will be
taking their leave of Ulster, the best send-off
for them would be a win and a performance
to signal new hope for next year.
It is a match which never fails to thrill,
and an Ulster win over a superb Leinster
group could be a harbinger for better
times to come with a team of youthful
exuberance, leavened by the presence
of big personalities such as Henderson,
Herring, Cooney, and McCloskey.
It is a fresh start; let us all supercharge
that future.
