A TOUCH 

Frost 

OF 

Gardening is in Adam Frost’s 

blood. The popular BBC 

Gardeners’ World presenter 

spent much of his Essex 

childhood learning how to grow 

plants at his grandparents’ 

gardens and allotments. No 

surprise then that a career in 

horticulture beckoned. 

Starting his training with a local 

parks department, he then went on 

work for the organic gardener and 

TV presenter, Geoff Hamilton. Next 

came training with David Stevens, 

the acclaimed garden designer, 

which led him to start his own 

design and build company where 

he has created show gardens at 

the Chelsea Flower Show and BBC 

Gardeners’ World Live. With four 

best-selling books under his belt 

and a busy speaking schedule too, 

we were delighted Adam found time 

to chat with us the spectacular, 

edible, headline show garden that 

he is creating for this year’s BBC 

Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC 

Birmingham (13th-16th June). 

Called The Chef’s Table, the garden 

combines his favourite hobbies - 

gardening, growing and cooking 

- and is sure to draw a crowd. It’s 

going to be a vibrant celebration of 

home-grown produce, featuring a 

rustic outdoor cooking and eating 

space set amongst an array of 

tasty plants. Adam will be hosting 

a daily programme of ‘plot-toplate’ 

themed conversations and 

demonstrations there, joined by 

chefs and culinary friends from 

sister event, Good Food Show 

Summer, including James Martin, 

Michel Roux, and Good Food’s 

Cassie Best.

to find out more. 

Thank you for talking with me. 

What a glorious day - in Wiltshire, 

where I’m talking to you from 

anyway! 

I am in Bath this afternoon - I’m 

going to film at a nursery tomorrow 

- I’ve built a couple of gardens in 

Bath, when I was designing and 

building, so I’ve spent a bit of time 

down there. 

Do you think we are falling more 

in love with our gardens than 

ever? 

I think that gardening gives so 

much happiness. I have many super 

memories of being in the garden 

with my grandfather. I remember 

sitting in his shed and the rain 

pouring down and the sound was 

fantastic. And then we would go out 

and then pull the asparagus up and 

it was just such a delightful thing. 

And that’s the other thing with 

gardening is, you know, it’s a great 

place to get together and have a 

chat. And it’s a great place to create 

memories. 

A lot of us that have gardened for 

a reasonable amount of time, you 

realise how many memories we’re 

carrying, really. I think that’s quite 

magical, really. 

Can you tell us a little more 

about your show garden at this 

year’s Gardener’ World Live in 

Birmingham? 

I am creating a garden and the 

lovely thing is that once I’ve created 

this garden, the chefs and cooks 

are going to come on and cook. 

They’re going to do demonstrations. 

It’s quite self-indulgent because I 

love talking to the chefs! So I’ve got 

a whole week, really, of chatting.

Are you in need of an electric vehicle that meets the demands of family life and feels

OVERVIEW 

Genesis is the luxury arm of Hyundai, who 

have been making huge strides in the 

SUV market with their perennially-popular 

Kona and Tuscon models. They’ve 

taken these successes and refined 

them, creating the Electrified GV70 - a 

stunning luxury crossover - from its gently 

articulated curves to a beautifully-decked 

out interior, this is a luxurious ride in every 

sense. We took it for a spin... 

DRIVING 

Given its heft, it handles corners 

surprisingly well - this is largely thanks 

to the rear-biased power delivery, which 

means the nose goes where you point it. 

Comfort is king, with the combination of its 

whisper-quiet motor and noise-cancelling 

technology - it effectively minimises 

wind noise with its standard acoustic 

windscreen and laminated side windows. 

RANGE 

The official range of the Genesis 

Electrified GV70 stands at 283 miles, 

although opting for the 20-inch wheel 

configuration slightly reduces it to 276 

miles. However, in real-world conditions, 

a more realistic estimate would be 

around 230 miles - still more than 

enough for day-to-day life, as well as 

some significant road trips. 

POWER 

Simplicity reigns in the Genesis Electrified 

GV70 lineup, boasting a singular 

mechanical configuration: dual electric 

motors and a four-wheel-drive setup, 

culminating in a formidable total power 

output of up to 483bhp. This propels 

the GV70 to achieve a brisk 0-62mph 

acceleration in just 4.2 seconds, eclipsing 

the performance of competitors such as 

the BMW iX3, Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model 

Y Long Range, and Volvo C40. 

INTERIOR 

The standard 14.5in infotainment screen 

is one of the largest you’ll find in the 

class. However, for shorter drivers, it 

can be a little hard to reach because of 

its high-placement on the dashboard 

- happily, there’s a dial on the central 

console to control the screen too. 

Overall the interior feels spacious and 

luxurious, with soft coatings on all the 

areas you regularly touch. The many 

options for seat and steering wheel 

adjustments amplify the comfort - 

adjustable lumbar support is standard, or 

opting for the Comfort Seat pack adds a 

massaging driver’s seat. 

Front and rear parking sensors, along 

with a reversing camera, are included 

as standard features. Additionally, the 

Electrified GV70 offers a clever feature 

to aid in kerb visibility through its side 

mirrors: when in reverse, the reversing 

lights project lines onto the ground 

behind the car. 

CHARGING 

The GV70 boasts a faster charging 

capability compared to the iX3 and 

Model Y, as it can accept power at a 

rate of up to 240kW. This translates 

to approximately 18 minutes for a 

10-80% charge when utilising a rapid 

charger with such capacity. On the other 

hand, a home wall charger will take 

approximately 12 hours to complete a full 

0-100% recharge. 

SAFETY & SUPPORT 

All models come equipped with 

automatic emergency braking (AEB) 

featuring pedestrian detection, lanekeeping 

assistance, and rear cross-traffic 

alert. The Innovation Pack enhances 

safety further with additional automated 

functionalities, including lane-change 

assist on motorways, blind-spot 

monitoring, and an upgraded emergency 

braking system.

a high level of extra support within our 

Early Applicant Programme and can 

attend guest speaker lectures on topics 

such as applying to and studying at

apart from their peers by participating in 

our extra-curricular offering of over 100 

activities. Many students also undertake 

an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) 

where they research, write and present

BUT NOT FREE 

When the Chancellor announced his plan for 

expanding the childcare support for parents 

with young children last year, families across 

the country would have been jumping for joy. 

Early education and childcare is very expensive, especially for our 

youngest children. So the offer of “free” hours for their child is a 

game changer. Unfortunately it’s not free although it will make a 

big difference to family finances. 

The Government contribution to childcare costs has been low 

compared to similar countries. There has only been some help 

for children once they turn three, or those from disadvantaged 

backgrounds aged two. 

Unfortunately, the money they pay providers has never covered 

the costs of delivering high quality early education and care with 

83% saying it does not cover their costs and nurseries closing 

faster than ever. 

From September, children aged nine months upwards of working 

parents will be entitled to 15 hours of funded childcare per 

week. This enables parents to work and supports children’s 

development, wellbeing and learning. 

There are catches however: 

• The 15 hours are only during term time – most providers 

will “stretch” these hours across the year which reduces the 

number of hours per week 

• The Government does not pay for meals, snacks, 

consumables or additional activities – so expect your 

nursery to make charges for these 

• You will need to pay for any additional hours at the 

nursery’s usual fee 

National Day Nurseries Association recommends that parents 

speak as soon as possible to their local providers to find a place 

for their child.

This magical one-acre garden near Leeds 

with Grade II National Heritage status is 

inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. 


Diverse plant combinations show through a series of inspirational 

garden rooms, creating one of the best small gardens in the 

world for a charming day out. 

A palette of colour bursts to life in spring and summer with tulips, 

bulging borders, tropical leafy plants, succulent exotics and a 

meadow full of wildflowers and wildlife. Timeless structure draws 

the eye in autumn and winter with a masterpiece of pattern 

and topiary and a finale of snowdrops and colourful gems. The 

ancient Adel woods create a scenic backdrop. 

Following the death of Sybil Spencer, York Gate was gifted to the 

charity Perennial in 1994 to help 

people in horticulture. The garden 

brings learning and pleasure to 

visitors from 3 April to 31 October, 

on Wednesday to Sunday from 

10am till 4pm. 

As an award-winning visitor 

attraction with a 2022 and 2023 

Travellers’ Choice award, its plant 

centre has a wide range of plants, 

including those propagated from 

the garden, its gift shop is stocked 

with seasonal cards, stationery and 

gifts for gardeners, and its popular 

cafe serves homegrown produce. 

It’s hard to imagine life without gardens like York Gate. Green 

spaces sustain, nurture and support us, but they also tell the 

story of the people who grow, tend, protect, design and build 

them. Despite the contribution their work makes to our collective 

wellbeing, people working with plants, trees, flowers or grass 

need help. Jobs in horticulture can be hard – seasonal, low paid 

and dependent on good health and family support. 36% more 

people asked Perennial for support last year, and as the only UK 

charity helping everyone working in or retired from horticulture 

and their families, the charity relies on the support of all of us 

who enjoy the benefits of their hard work.

SHALLOT 

TANDOORI 

SKEWERS 

These tandoori salmon skewers are 

the perfect BBQ recipe for summer, 

or they can also be grilled indoors 

on a griddle pan if it’s a classic 

British summer of rain! 

Serves: 4 

Preparation Time: 15 minutes (plus 

up to 60 minutes marinating time) 

Cooking Time: 10 minutes 

For the quick pickled shallots 

4 round shallots, peeled and finely 

sliced 

125ml water 

125ml white wine vinegar 

½ tsp fennel seeds 

½ tsp cumin seeds 

1 tbsp table salt 

2 tbsp golden caster sugar 

For the skewers 

4 skinless salmon fillets (about 125g 

each) 

2 round shallots, finely chopped 

1 large garlic clove, grated 

2.5cm piece of fresh ginger, 

grated 

Juice of 1 lime 

100g Greek yoghurt 

1 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder 

1 tsp ground turmeric 

1 tsp ground cumin 

2 tsp ground coriander 

2 tsp smoked paprika 

Salt and pepper, to taste 

Vegetable oil 

To serve 

4 naan breads 

4 tbsp raita 

2 tbsp coriander leaves 

1 long green chilli, finely sliced 

Lime halves 

Prepare the quick pickled shallots. 

Place the sliced shallots in a clean 

bowl. Put the water, wine vinegar, 

fennel and cumin seeds, salt 

and sugar into a small pan over 

a medium heat and stir until the 

sugar and salt are fully dissolved. 

Pour the hot pickling liquor over 

the shallots and leave to cool 

slightly. Cover the bowl and place 

in the fridge to pickle. 

To prepare the salmon, cut 

each fillet into 4 equal-sized 

chunks. Place the chunks 

in a bowl with the chopped 

shallots, garlic, ginger and 

lime juice and mix well. 

In another bowl, mix the 

yoghurt with the spices and 

some salt and pepper. Add 

this spiced yoghurt to the 

salmon and mix well again. 

Leave to marinate in a cool 

place for at least 20 minutes, 

or up to an hour. 

Once marinated, thread the 

salmon onto your skewers. 

Brush the hot barbecue or 

griddle pan lightly with a little 

vegetable oil then lay the 

skewers on it. Cook for 2–3 

minutes on each side until 

golden brown and lightly 

charred. Meanwhile, warm 

the 

naan on a low heat in the oven. 

Once cooked, transfer the skewers 

to a warm plate. 

Spread the naans with a tablespoon 

each of raita. Top with a salmon 

skewer. Scatter over the pickled 

shallots, some coriander and sliced 

green chilli. Serve with lime halves 

for squeezing over. 

CHAAT MASALA 

POTATOES AND 

SHALLOTS 

Sweet and crunchy, raw echalions 

shallots marry perfectly with crispy 

new potatoes, cold yoghurt and a 

zingy dressing in this fresh Indianinspired 

salad. 

Serves: 4 

Preparation Time: 10 minutes 

Cooking Time: 35 minutes 

For the potatoes 

750g baby new potatoes, cut 

lengthways into 1cm thick slices 

2 tbsp olive oil 

1 tsp chaat masala 

½ tsp ground turmeric 


250g thick Greek yoghurt 

1 echalion, thinly sliced on a 

mandolin or by hand 

1 green chilli, thinly sliced 

1½ tsp coriander seeds, toasted 

1½ tsp nigella seeds, toasted 

For the coriander chutney

30g fresh coriander, reserving a few 

for garnish 

1 green chilli, deseeded and roughly 

chopped 

1 tbsp lime juice 

4 tbsp olive oil 

Salt 

To serve 

1½ tbsp shop-bought tamarind 

paste 

1½ tsp caster sugar 

¼ tsp chaat masala 

Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. Put 

a large pan of salted water on to 

boil. Once boiling add the potatoes 

and cook for 4-5 minutes until 

cooked through. Drain the potatoes. 

Add the potatoes to a large baking 

tray – drizzle with the 2 tbsp oil, 

and top with the chaat masala, 

turmeric and seasoning. Toss 

to mix thoroughly. Roast in the 

oven, stirring once or twice, for 35 

minutes, or until deeply golden. 

Meanwhile, make the coriander 

chutney. Put all the ingredients into 

a food processor or blender and 

blitz until smooth. Set aside. 

To make the tamarind dressing, 

whisk together all the ingredients in 

a small bowl with 1½ teaspoons of 

water until the sugar is dissolved. 

Set aside. 

Spread the yoghurt on a large 

serving platter. Top with half the 

coriander chutney, swirling it through 

without completely incorporating. 

Drizzle with half of the tamarind 

dressing, and top with the potatoes, 

shallot and chilli. Drizzle over the 

remaining coriander chutney and 

tamarind dressing, then sprinkle 

over the toasted seeds and reserved 

coriander leaves and serve. 

CHICKEN, 

SHALLOT AND 

CASHEW CURRY 

This warming, fragrant chicken curry 

is the perfect dish to cook over the 

weekend when you have a little bit 

more time. Serve with rice, chapatis 

and pickles for a delicious feast. 

Serves: 4 

Preparation Time: 15 minutes (plus 

2 hours marinating time and 30 

minutes soaking) 

Cooking Time: 45 

minutes 

For the chicken 

2 tbsp Greek yoghurt 

2 tsp turmeric 


800g skinless bone-in chicken 

thighs and drumsticks 

2 tsp vegetable oil 

6 cloves 

1 cinnamon stick 

120g round shallots, peeled and 

finely chopped 

1 tsp sugar 

100ml warm water 

½ tsp ground cardamom 

For the cashew paste: 

75g cashew nuts 

5cm piece of ginger, peeled and 

roughly chopped 

2 green chillies 

For the temper: 

1 tbsp vegetable oil 

2 round shallots, peeled and thinly 

sliced 

30g cashew nuts 

1 tsp mustard seeds 

10 curry leaves 

Put the yoghurt, turmeric and salt 

and pepper in a bowl and stir to 

combine. Mix through the chicken, 

cover and leave in the fridge to 

marinate for at least 2 hours. 

Meanwhile, make the cashew paste. 

Soak the cashews in 100ml of 

warm water 

for half an hour. Put the cashews 

and their liquid in a blender with 

the ginger and chillies, blitzing to a 

smooth paste. 

Heat the 2 teaspoons of vegetable 

oil in a large, lidded saucepan on 

a medium heat. Add the cloves 

and cinnamon and let sizzle for a 

couple of minutes until fragrant. 

Add the shallots and cook, stirring 

often, until golden – around 6 

minutes. 

Add the chicken and fry for 8 

minutes until seared all over. 

Lower the heat, add the sugar, a 

pinch of salt and 100ml of water. 

Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, 

stirring halfway through. Stir in the 

cashew paste, simmer for a further 

5 minutes, add the cardamom, and 

take the pot off the heat. 

Allow the curry to rest whilst 

making the temper – heat the 1 

tbsp oil in a small frying pan on a 

medium heat. Add the shallots and 

cook for five minutes until starting 

to turn golden. Add the cashews 

and fry for a further 2 minutes. 

Add the mustard seeds and curry 

leaves, cook for 30 seconds. Pour 

the temper over the curry and serve 

with rice or chapati.

Garden 

The weather might be a little quixotic but 

the grass still grows and the bees still buzz 

so our gardens carry on regardless. 

If you are looking for inspiration and ideas- and like a great 

day out too - what better than a visit to a garden or country 

show. 

There will be professional nurserymen and women, show 

gardens, garden ornaments and a plethora of ideas and tricks 

of the trade to help you. 

If the idea of a show like Chelsea or Hampton Court is 

daunting and you know that you could never achieve that 

level of perfection- no one expects you to. You can pick 

a tiny corner of a show garden or even a simple plant 

combination to add to your own patch. As a show judge 

I am constantly amazed at how creative people are, how 

wonderful new plant introductions can be and what fun it is 

to share that with fellow gardeners. There is nothing more 

exciting than wandering around a marquee full of plants- just 

going wherever the mood takes you, stopping for a coffee 

or lunch and arriving home with a head full of new ideas- and 

probably aching feet!

Spend £3,500, add £48,000 

Our research found that removing 

an internal wall to create an open 

plan kitchen and diner was the best 

way to add value to your home. It 

could cost around £3,500 but add 

£48,000 to the average London 

property or £27,000 to the average 

home in Dorset. 

Not only will this add value to your 

home, it should also make it more 

pleasant to live in, with more and 

more of us opting for open-plan 

living. Knocking down walls means 

more communal spaces where 

families can enjoy quality time 

together, whether that’s chatting 

while dinner is cooked or keeping 

an eye on kids while they do their 

homework. 

Best of all, this is a relatively simple 

project that most builders can 

complete in under a week. Meaning 

you could make almost £50k in just 

7 days! 

You may need the assistance of 

a structural engineer. A Chartered

the value of your home. Putting in a

doesn’t have to break the bank – it 

costs around £4,000 on average. 

But, it could add £17,000 to the 

value of a London property, or the 

FMB and The Guild of Property 

Professionals found it could add 

around £15,000 to the average 

home in Cambridgeshire. 

MAKE WAY FOR 

AN ENSUITE 

Spend £7,000, add £15,000 

Another way to add extra bathroom 

space is to carve some space out of 

your master bedroom to create an 

ensuite. The job should take around 

11 days but could add £14,525 to 

the value of the average London

We love green front gardens but

neighbourhood, then paving over 

part of your front garden to create 

space for off road parking could 

significantly boost your home’s 

value. A parking space can add as 

much as 13% to the value of your 

home according to Direct Line. 

Our research found that a new 

driveway would add £13,354 to 

the value of the average Surrey 

property. 

You’ll need to check with your local 

council to see if you need planning 

permission. Usually, if your home 

isn’t on an A or B road you won’t 

need permission, but you will have 

to comply with your local authority’s 

regulations on dropping the kerb. 

SPRUCE UP YOUR 

BACK GARDEN 

Spend £4,000, add £9,000 

Gardens are often overlooked when 

property projects are concerned but 

ploughing some money into your 

green space can be rewarding. Our 

analysis found that adding decking 

and lighting to your back garden can 

really boost the asking price when a 

property goes on the market. 

For example, a property in Dorset 

would be worth £8,946 more after 

the job was done but would only 

require an outlay of £3,971. 

DECORATE 

Spend £1,000, add £5,000 

If you are planning to put your 

property on the market make sure 

you give it a fresh lick of paint first.

Companion planting 

Companion planting is a gardening technique that involves planting different types of plants

The beans are nitrogen-fixing plants, which means they can convert 

nitrogen from the air so it can be used by the soil. This process helps 

to increase soil fertility and provides the sweetcorn and squash with 

the necessary nutrients to grow. The sweetcorn acts as a natural trellis 

for the beans to climb. As the beans grow up the corn stalks, they 

provide stability, whilst the beans also provide shade to the soil, which

Planting garlic bulbs at the foot of roses makes them taste nasty to

plant as well as enhancing the rose’s fragrance. 

TOMATOES AND BASIL 

Planting basil near tomato plants can be beneficial as the aromatic 

oils released by basil can enhance the flavour of tomatoes. Basil

tomato plants from insects like aphids and whiteflies. 

MARIGOLDS WITH VEGETABLES
