The remains of U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt.
James H. Marrah will be buried in Kirkwood
Cemetery, London, on May 25. Marrah was
the co-pilot of a B-24 bomber plane that
crashed due to enemy fire on Aug. 1, 1943,
over Romania. His remains were identified
and accounted for in August 2023.
At long last, the family of U.S. Army Air
Forces 2nd Lt. James H. Marrah has closure.
Nearly 81 years ago, Marrah’s plane
went down over Romania during a bombing
mission in World War II. It wasn’t until this
past August that the London man’s remains
were identified and the Defense POW/MIA
Accounting Agency (DPAA) marked him as
accounted for. His remains will be laid to
rest in London on May 25, 2024.
For James P. Swyers, one of Marrah’s
nephews and his oldest living relative, the
closure brings with it a feeling of release.
“My grandmother (Elizabeth, Marrah’s
mother) tried for 20 years after his plane
went down to find out if he was alive or not
and, if not, to return his remains,” Swyers
said. “She kept the door unlocked in her
house, hoping he would come home. She
kept that going forever, and it was drilled
into us grandkids to do the same.”
Swyers was born in 1949, six years after
his uncle was declared
missing in action. While he never got to meet the man for
whom he is named, Swyers got to know him through the stories his
mother, grandmother, and other relatives would tell.
“He joined the military because he wanted to learn to fly,” he
said. “He really wanted to be a fighter pilot, but he was too tall. He
was 6-1, 182 pounds. Fighter pilots had to be 5-10 or under.”
The family has letters Marrah sent to his mother in which he
describes his adventures in the military, including the acrobatic
moves they had him and his fellow pilots doing in the heavy
bombers.
Marrah received his wings and commission at Lubbock Field,
Texas, on March 20, 1943. He married Kathleen Tope of Springfield
on May 26 during a short leave.
That summer, he was serving with the 415th Bombardment
Squadron (Heavy), 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air
Force. On Aug. 1, the B-24 Liberator aircraft
on which Marrah was a co-pilot
crashed as a result of enemy anti-aircraft
fire during Operation TIDAL WAVE, the
largest bombing mission against the oil
fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of
Bucharest, Romania. Marrah was 22 years
old.
“They were flying to bomb at 200 feet, got
hit by some flak in the bomb bay which set
a gas tank on fire, setting the whole middle
of the plane on fire. Why they were flying
that low, I don’t know,” Swyers said.
Of the 177 bombers involved in the raid,
Marrah’s plane was one of 51 that failed to
return. The mission succeeded in damaging
the oil refineries but at the cost of hundreds
of U.S. airmen’s lives. Only three of the 10
airmen aboard Marrah’s plane survived. In
1999, two of Marrah’s brothers talked to one
of the survivors and got his recollections on
tape.
Marrah’s remains were not identified following
the war. Remains that could not be
identified were buried as “unknowns” in the
hero section of the Civilian and Military
Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiesti, Prahova, Romania.
Following the war, the American Graves
Registration Command (AGRC), the organization
that searched for and recovered
A collection of memorabilia about James H. Marrah includes: (clockwise from top left) a
photo of the plane he co-piloted; his Purple Heart certificate; a photo of him in civilian
clothes; a copy of one of the many letters his mother wrote to the military in her attempts
to find out if he was alive or dead; letters Marrah wrote to family back home plus a letter
from a friend that was scheduled to be delivered the day Marrah’s plane went down; and
a photo of Marrah in his pilot’s uniform.

LHS team nabs league trophy
New school records
set in 1,600 meters
by London, Alder
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
They’ve done it again.
For the third time in four years, London
High School’s boys’ track team has won the
league title for the Kenton Trail division of
the Central Buckeye Conference (CBC).
The conference championships took place
on May 8 and May 10 at Benjamin Logan
High School. London scored 155 points to
take first place, followed by Jonathan Alder
with 125 points for second place, and Bellefontaine
with 105 points. The division also includes
Kenton Ridge, Tecumseh, and Urbana.
“We came into it with an underdog mindset,”
said London track coach Joe Montoya,
who ran the numbers ahead of time. “We
were projected to finish second. So, we set a
number of goals and made a game plan for
each individual event.”
The team came up with a mantra which
they repeated throughout the championships:
“Job’s not finished.”
“Even when we took the lead, they kept
that mindset until the 4x400 relay (the last
event),” Montoya said.
He credited the team’s performance in
field events for playing a big part in the victory.
Sophomore Blake Reay leapt 21 feet to
take first place in the long jump, a personal
best for him by more than a foot. Senior
Hunter Canney cleared 5 feet 8 inches to
win the high jump and hit 20-10 in the long
jump for second place. Filling in for a teammate
who couldn’t compete, senior Zach
Jones competed in the high hump for the
first time in over a month; he went 5-6 for
third place. Jones also finished second in the
shot put with a throw of 44 feet 7 inches, a
new personal best by over two feet.
Junior Ben Pridemore nabbed second
place in the discus with a throw of 118 feet
11 inches. He also placed fifth in the shot
Mark Tremayne (center) congratulates local athletes who broke
school records in the 1600-meter run at the Central Buckeye Conference
meet, Kenton Trail Division. His son, Brady (left), ran a
time of 4:23.98 to set a new school record for Jonathan Alder High
School. Cameron Carn (right) ran 4:22.58, a new school record
for London High School. Mark Tremayne held the previous record
for London–4:24.5 set in 1995.
put with a throw of 40-6. Senior Michael Pollock and sophomore
Brody Neal both recorded marks of 11 feet for the pole vault, good
for second place and third place, respectively.
One of the many highlights in the running events came in the
1600-meter run. London sophomore Cameron Carn took first place
with a time of 4:22.58, a new school record. The previous record of
4:24.5 was set by Mark Tremayne in 1995. Tremayne’s son, Brady, a
senior at Jonathan Alder this year, came in third place with a time
of 4:23.98, a new school record at Jonathan Alder. Tremayne was on
hand to congratulate his son and Carn.
London sophomore Stevie Gravely pulled off a surprise victory
in the 400-meter dash (51.52) and placed second in the 200-meter
dash (22.48) behind Jonathan Alder’s Cameron Jewell who was
named CBC Athlete of the Meet.
London’s 4x200-meter relay team took first place with a time of
1:32.54. The team includes Gravely, junior June Turner, senior
Damian Roby, and senior George Weese. The 4x100-meter relay
team placed second with a time of 44.87. The team includes Roby,
Turner, freshman Dreux Prince, and senior Nick Perigo.
Active shooter investigation continues
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Detectives with the West Jefferson Police
Department are working with the Columbus
Division of Police to collect additional
evidence in an attempt to establish motive
for a shooting incident that took place at the
Amazon fulfillment center in West Jefferson
on May 12.
West Jefferson officers were dispatched
to Amazon’s CMH5 building, 6400 State
Rte. 29, at approximately 4:43 p.m. that day
on reports of at least one shot being fired inside
the building. Upon arrival, the officers
and others responding from several agencies
entered the building, looking for threats
and any victims who needed medical aid.
They cleared the building shortly thereafter,
finding no threats. There were no reported
injuries at the scene.
The suspect, who was later identified as
Ali Hamsa Yusuf of Columbus, had left the
scene in a vehicle prior to the officers’ arrival,
going in an unknown direction. He
was a contracted, third-party security guard
at the Amazon CMH5 building.
Not long after he left the building, officers
located him in west Columbus, near the
intersection of Georgesville and Clime
roads. According to police reports, Yusuf exited
his vehicle at that time and opened fire
on the officers, striking one Columbus police
officer. Officers returned fire, and the suspect
was later pronounced dead at Doctors
West Hospital. The wounded officer was
treated at Grant Hospital. His bullet proof
vest is credited with stopping the bullet.
At the scene in West Jefferson, officers
interviewed individuals at the building, including
another security guard who had
called 9-1-1, telling dispatchers the suspect
had tried to execute him.
According to West Jefferson Police Chief
Brandon Smith, the victim said he had been
sitting at his post near the building entrance,
wondering why the suspect was taking
a longer break than usual.
“He said he started thinking what he was
Other second-place finishers included
Carn in the 800-meter run (1:58.13) and Junior
Justin Jackman in the 300-meter hurdles
(43.44).
Junior Marquise McFarlane came in
third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.17). Also
coming in third was the 4x400-meter relay
team (3:32.77)). The team includes Carn,
Turner, Weese, and sophomore Latrell Jackson.
London girls
The girls’ team celebrated a third-place
overall finish, the highest finish they’ve had
at the conference championships in about 10
years. They set some records in the process.
London’s 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter
relay teams set Kenton Trail conference
records with their winning times of 1:49 and
4:09.67, respectively. The same four runners
comprised both teams: junior Andria Pol-
West Jefferson Police Chief Brandon Smith speaks at the Columbus
Division of Police headquarters on May 13 to explain the
shooting incident that took place on May 12 at the Amazon fulfillment
center in West Jefferson. Shown on the screen behind him
is an image taken from surveillance video. In it, the suspect (left)
is shown aiming a semi-automatic handgun at the back of the
head of the victim. The victim was unharmed as the bullet narrowly
missed his head.
going to do because he didn’t want to leave his post. Then, he heard
shots fired from behind him,” Smith said.
Surveillance video shows the suspect walking up to within about
three feet of the victim, aiming a semiautomatic handgun at the
back of the victim’s head, checking the top rail of the gun, and then
firing a round.
“It just missed the victim’s head,” Smith said,
The victim fell to the ground and started to retreat toward the
back of the building. The video shows the suspect start to follow the
victim, then change direction and leave the building.
Detectives later collected one bullet and one casing, as well as
one live round at the exit. Evidence from the West Jefferson scene
is being submitted to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation
(BCI) in London for further processing. The Columbus Police Department
and BCI are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Both investigations are ongoing.
In addition to the West Jefferson Police Department, agencies
that responded to the scene in West Jefferson included The Madison
County Sheriff’s Office, Plain City Police Department, London Police
Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jefferson Township
Fire Department, and Prairie Township Fire Department.
lazek, sophomore Katelyn Duvall, and freshmen Cora Markley and
Cameron Markley.
London’s 4x800-meter relay team placed second with a time of
10:19 and included junior Lily Patterson,
sophomore Bailey Colestock, senior Riley
Colestock, and senior Molly Weese. The
4x100-meter relay team placed third with a
time of 51.55 and included Duvall, Pollazek,
Cora Markley, and senior Carly Ramey.
Pollazek also won the high jump for the
third straight year with a mark of 5-3. Junior
Lillian Finke won the pole vault with a
mark of 11-3.
Cameron Markley placed second in the
400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.98.
Freshmen Lilly Lohrer took third place in
the 100-meter hurdles (16.05).
Bellefontaine finished first in the team
competition with 172 points, followed by
WJ firefighter
We would like to personally thank everyone that attended
and supported our pancake breakfast benefit on April 27. Jefferson
Township Fire Department chose to sponsor Logan
Jester and the Humane Society of Madison County for this
event. We are humbled by the generosity extended by our community
that facilitated the largest donation to date.
Initially, we planned to split the donations equally between
the two parties. However, the Humane Society of Madison
County graciously donated their portion of the proceeds back
to Logan Jester.
Logan joined Tri-County Fire in Mount Sterling on Sept. 1,
2022. He was diagnosed with a very rare form of liver cancer
known as Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma just a few
months later. Due to this being such a rare cancer, Logan must
intermittently travel out of state for certain treatments at a
specialty center. The donations received from the pancake
breakfast will help to offset the ongoing medical and other expenses
associated with his cancer treatments.
As the Humane Society of Madison County is a non-profit
organization with many expenses associated with the medical
and nutritional care of the animals, facility upkeep, and much
more, we find this to be an extremely generous gesture. We are
proud to be part of a community that continuously steps up to
support each other.
Please consider continuing to support both the Humane Society
of Madison County and Logan Jester. The Humane Society
has a wish-list and options to donate on their website at
www.hsmcohio.org/. Logan Jester’s GoFundMe can be found at
https://gofund.me/91a9279d.
Jefferson Township Firefighters would also like to again
thank our sponsors who help make these events possible: TRG
Maintenance, Schuman’s Meats, and Michael Foods (Bob
Evans).
We look forward to seeing our community at our next event.
Jefferson Township Fire Department
West Jefferson
The Jefferson Township Fire Department raised $4,500 at
their recent pancake breakfast. The funds are going to Logan
Jester, a fire fighter who is battling a rare form of liver cancer.
On hand for the check presentation were: (from left) fire fighters
Alexander Ratliff, Kaitlyn Wilson, and Avery Salvito, Andy
Replace tattered
American flags
As I drive around the London, West Jefferson, and Choctaw
Lake areas, it does my heart good to see all the flag poles displaying
the American flag, also known as “Old Glory.” However, it is very
disappointing and disrespectful at what terrible condition many of
those flags are in: tattered, ripped, torn, etc.
As we approach Memorial Day, please, if your American flag is
damaged, retire it and hopefully replace it with a new one. To correctly
retire an American flag, you can contact any American Legion
Post or Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Additionally, there is
a drop box available in downtown West Jefferson at the corner of
East Main Street (Highway 40) and North Center Street to drop off
your American flag to have it properly retired.
Support for Oak
Run Solar project
On behalf of all those in Madison County who support growing
Ohio’s economy and energy independence, I commend the Ohio
Power Siting Board (OPSB) for their approval of the Oak Run Solar
Project here in Madison County. Oak Run will deliver enough energy
to power 170,000 Ohio households while increasing the tax
base in the county. This is especially exciting as a parent because
Jonathan Alder Local Schools, according to the district, will receive
more than $3 million annually to support future renovations, facility
projects, and operations.
In addition, Madison County will now be home to one of the leading
agrivoltaic sites in the nation. We have an opportunity to be an
example to the rest of Ohio, and the country, by bringing farming
and renewable energy together. This will enhance the agricultural
activities in the county by providing another option for farmers to
consider in the diversification of their operations.
Furthermore, Oak Run will also expand opportunities for The
Ohio State University students studying agrivoltaics. Within eight
years of operation, at least 70 percent of the farmable project area,
or at least 4,000 acres, must include crops and livestock. OSU’s
partnership with Oak Run will allow students to help oversee the
development of the dual-use site, thereby learning critical skills in
managing these sites while advancing new techniques and ideas.
I thank the OPSB for its forward-thinking solutions to boost energy
independence in the Buckeye state, grow our local economy,
and support the farmers and businesses that want to continue or
grow their operations in the county.
Why Supporting Small
Business MATTERS!
Dear Neighbor,
As a State Senator, small business owner, and nonprofit
CEO, I am keenly aware of the vital role that
small businesses play in our communities. In honor
of Small Business Month, I am calling all Ohioans
to get out and support their favorite small business
as your support plays a significant role in a
creating vibrant, flourishing communities. Small
businesses are the backbone of our local economy,
fostering job creation, innovation, and a unique
character that defines our neighborhoods. Beyond
their economic contributions, small businesses
have an unparalleled capacity to make a meaningful
impact on our communities through their commitment
to giving back.
When small businesses succeed, they generate
employment opportunities, helping to reduce unemployment
rates and improve the standard of living.
Every local store, restaurant, or service
provider that thrives contributes to a more robust
and resilient economy. Moreover, small businesses
often source their products locally, ensuring economic
benefits circulate within our community
and supporting other local enterprises and suppliers.
The impact of small business extends beyond economics.
I have witnessed firsthand the intersection
between business and philanthropy. Many small
businesses partner with local charities, sponsor
community events, and support local schools and
community initiatives. Such acts of generosity and
community involvement foster a sense of unity
and shared purpose, making our neighborhoods
more vibrant and cohesive.
Join me in supporting our local small business
community. Your patronage helps these companies
expand, create more jobs, and continue their
invaluable community support.
Enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, shop at a local
neighborhood store, or use a local service
provider. Whatever you choose, just know that
your support will have a direct impact on Ohio’s
economy. By supporting our small businesses,
your investing in Ohio’s economic health and contributing
to the social fabric that makes our communities
strong.
Results matter so let's make a difference together.
fallen American personnel, disinterred all
American remains from the Bolovan Cemetery
for identification. The AGRC was unable
to identify more than 80 unknowns
from Bolovan Cemetery, and those remains
were then interred at Ardennes American
Cemetery and Henri-Chapelle American
Cemetery, both in Belgium.
In 2017, DPAA began exhuming unknowns
believed to be associated with unaccounted-for
airmen from Operation
TIDAL WAVE losses. These remains were
sent to the DPAA Laboratory for examination
and identification.
To identify Marrah’s remains, scientists
from DPAA used anthropological analysis,
as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally,
scientists from the Armed Forces
Medical Examiner System used DNA analysis.
Swyers, Marrah’s sister Florence
(Swyers’s mother), and one of Marrah’s
strong match, helping to make the positive
identification.
Marrah was deemed accounted for on
Aug. 3, 2023, almost 80 years to the day his
plane went down. Earlier this year, DPAA
representatives arranged for a Zoom call
with many of Marrah’s relatives during
which they shared their findings, explained
their process, and asked the family their
wishes for burial of the remains.
“He could have been buried at Arlington
Cemetery (in Arlington, Virginia) where his
brother, John, is buried, but we decided to
keep him local He will be buried next to his
mother and sister,” Swyers said.
Arrangements were made to fly Marrah’s
remains to the Columbus, Ohio, airport on
May 17 and for Lynch Family Funeral
Home to transport the casket from the airport
to the funeral home in London.
MARRAH
Second Lieutenant James Hudson Marrah
was born on Jan. 9, 1921, and gave his
life for his county on Aug. 1, 1943. A graduate
of London High School in London, Ohio,
he was the oldest of seven children in the
Marrah family and has been remembered as
a hero to us all. Eighty years and two days
after the B-24 bomber he was co-piloting
was shot down, his remains were identified
by a team of medical specialists serving the
families of all military personnel missing in
action.
James entered the military on Feb. 17,
1941. He served in the United States Army
Air Force, 415th Bombardment Squadron,
98th Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force
and was the co-pilot of the B-24 Liberator
bomber Yentu. 2LT Marrah fearlessly undertook
his mission in Operation Tidal
Wave to target the oil refineries of Ploesti,
Romania (referred to by some as “Hitler’s
gas stations”), on Aug. 1, 1943. The goal of
the mission was to cripple the crucial supply
of oil and fuel from the Ploesti oil fields that
supplied the German war machine. His unwavering
courage and dedication to duty exemplified
the highest ideals of service to
country. In the face of danger, 2LT Marrah’s
sacrifice and commitment to defend his
country has stood as a beacon of bravery to
his family, country, and all who knew him.
It was the heroic effort of James and his
co-pilot, Lt. Edward McGuire, to continue
flying a heavily damaged airplane that allowed
three men to bail out and survive the
B-24 crash. Robert Rans, one of the survivors
who met with family members in
1999, confirmed the effort of “Jimmy’s last
dying gasp” to increase the altitude enough
for Rans to parachute to the ground safely,
a shining example of one of many reasons
James was a hero. Rans credited Jimmy
and Lt. McGuire with the gift of his long
and happy life after Aug. 1, 1943.
The awards and decorations Marrah
earned included the Distinguished Flying
Calling hours are set for 11:30 a.m. to
Marrah, one of Marrah’s nephews, will officiate.
The service is open to the public.
Burial will follow in Kirkwood Cemetery,
London. (See the full obituary on page 6.)
Swyers, who lives in London, said nearly
60 relatives from around the country plan
to be present. Among them are his brother,
Tom, who lives in Newport, and his sister,
Melissa, who lives just outside of London,
both in Madison County.
Barb Lynch said she has received many
calls at the funeral home from veterans organizations
and other groups that plan to
send representatives to the services.
“I’m glad I was still alive when this happened.
He was my namesake,” Swyers said,
adding that he wishes it had been possible
is the only living member of that generation.
His surviving family includes many
nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grandnephews,
great-grand-nieces, and greatgrand-nephews,
who never had the honor
and pleasure to meet him, but have always
been inspired by him. James’s family has
long awaited the day he would return and
celebrates his homecoming — mission accomplished.
The family wishes to thank the U.S. military,
specifically the Defense POW/MIA Accounting
Agency and the Past Reparations
Branch, for not giving up on identifying and
returning casualties of war home to their
families. Specifically, the family is grateful
for the return of 2LT James H. Marrah, a
decorated war hero whose remains are returning
to be buried in his hometown of
London, Ohio, on May 25, 2024.
The family invites friends to call at the
Medal with three Bronze Service Stars,
World War II Victory Medal, Presidential
COAAA seeks volunteers for Friendly Caller program
Older Americans Month (OAM) is a national
awareness campaign observed each May
that acknowledges the positive impact older
adults make in society. The Administration for
Community Living, the organization that leads
the campaign and designates each OAM with
a unique theme, has commemorated 2024 as
“Powered by Connection,” a theme that recognizes
the importance meaningful relationships
and social connections have on the health and
wellbeing of older adults.
This year’s theme closely defines the work
of the Friendly Caller Program, a program offered
to individuals currently receiving services
through Central Ohio Area Agency on
Aging (COAAA). Understanding the vital importance
that social connection plays in reducing
loneliness and improving mental
health, COAAA started the program in 2020
to meet the needs of individuals who would
like additional social interaction.
COAAA relies on the generosity of volunteers.
Volunteers receive detailed training
from COAAA before being matched with
their conversation partner. This program offers
volunteers the opportunity to create their
own schedule, volunteer remotely, and
brighten someone’s day. Friendly chats last
about 15 minutes and occur once per week or
once every other week over the course of six
months. A one-time visit to COAAA’s office
for a background check is required.
More information can be found at
www.coaaa.org/friendlycaller. Those interested
also can call COAAA at 800-589-7277
to learn more.
COAAA is a regional organization that
helps older adults and individuals with disabilities
live safely and independently in their
own homes.
Active Lifestyles
Exercise for good health
Exercise is an important component of a
healthy lifestyle. The current Physical Activity
Guidelines for Americans from the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services
indicates adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity
physical activity each week.
Moderate-intensity physical activity gets
the heart pumping, but only around one in
five adults and teens get enough exercise to
maintain good health, says the American
Heart Association. It may be because people
are having difficulty figuring out what constitutes
moderate-intensity activity. Here is a
more detailed explanation of the types of activities
considered moderate-intensity.
• Walking very briskly
Consider
preplanning
arrangements
Continuously serving the community since
1908, the dedicated directors at Eberle-Fisher
Funeral Home and Crematory in London offer
a knowledgeable and caring approach to not
only at-need funeral arrangements, but also
for prearranged services.
Preplanning your funeral, memorial service,
or celebration of life can be one of the
most valuable gifts to your loved ones and to
yourself. There is an old saying: “The palest
ink is better than the best memory.” While offering
peace of mind knowing that you are
looking out for the needs of yourself and your
family, preplanning your services allows you
to make the important decisions without the
added burden of grief and sense of emergency
that comes with death.
When a service is not preplanned, grieving
family members can make hasty and impulsive
choices and often are left to speculate regarding
wishes of the deceased. Preplanning
allows you to make thoughtful choices that
are meaningful, personalized, prudent, and
confirms that your wishes will be honored.
If desired, prearranging also allows options
for prepaying which not only reduces financial
burden but also provides guaranteed pricing
until services are needed.
For any questions, information regarding
preplanning, or to schedule a time with the directors,
call (740) 852-2345.
• Heavy cleaning, like washing windows,
vacuuming and mopping
• Mowing the lawn with a power mower
• Bicycling with light effort
• Playing recreational badminton
• Slow dancing
• Shooting a basketball
• Water aerobics
• Heavy gardening
• Painting and decorating
Anything that doesn’t increase heart rate
and breathing speed will not count as moderate-intensity
activity towards the recommended
amount of activity. However, any
exercise is better than no exercise at all. As
long as an activity breaks up long periods of
sitting still, doctors says it is still beneficial.

A passion for taking
care of senior citizens
Hello, my name is Megan Reisinger, and I
am the sales counselor at The Madison Senior
Living Community. I have been in the healthcare
industry for 12 years, originally attending
Ohio State University for swine management
but realized God had a different plan for me.
I grew up spending every Friday with my
grandparents and cherish those memories, so
I decided to go back to school for my STNA
license. I fell in love with taking care of seniors
and decided this is my passion. I love
helping seniors and learning all about their
lives and figuring out how to make their days
just a little bit more special.
I am a mom to a handsome 2-year-old
named Elijah. He is my world and very special
because I was told I could never have kids and
was blessed with him. In my spare time, I am
learning to make different types of breads. A
passion of mine is baking; I can be creative
and make people happy at the same time!
What I love most about working at The
Madison is the ability to help people through
this journey. It can be a difficult path, but I am
here to help people each step of the way.
I am excited to announce that we will be
hosting several events all summer long open to
the public. Our first is our Father’s Day cookout
on June 15. If you would like to learn more,
feel free to give me a call, (740) 812-1449.
TIP: A number of studies indicate that maintaining strong social connections
and keeping mentally active as you age might lower the risk of cognitive decline,
as well as Alzheimer’s Disease.

Hughes picked to fill Mt. Sterling council seat
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A relatively new Mount Sterling
resident is now a member of village
council.
On May 13, council’s sitting five
members voted unanimously to appoint
Barry Hughes to fill the seat
previously held by William Tilley
who resigned last month. Hughes
will serve out Tilley’s term which Barry Hughes
expires on Dec. 31, 2025.
Hughes was one of two individuals who expressed interest
in the position. Jacob Keever was the other. Both
men were interviewed in executive session at the May 13
council meeting. Hughes was sworn in after the meeting.
Hughes moved from Galloway to Mount Sterling a
little over a year ago. He wasted no time in getting involved
with the community, working as a poll worker
for the Madison County Board of Elections and serving
on three council committees—nuisance and abatement,
records retention, and planning.
“I’ve been going to the (council) meetings for almost
a whole year. I’m retired now. It’s a way to give back to
the community,” Hughes said about his decision to
throw his hat in the ring for the vacant council seat.
Describing himself as fiscally conservative, the new
council member said his general goal is to make sure
the village is prepared for the future with adequate systems
in place and the financial resources to cover the
associated expenses.
Hughes is originally from Groveport. He graduated
from Groveport Madison High School and attended
Eastland Career Center to study electricity. He worked
as an electrician for 40 years, retiring in 2022. As a
hobby, he cleans military veterans’ gravestones, primarily
markers from the Civil War era.
Hughes’s first council meeting as a council member
will be June 10.
New service department position
Council voted 5-0 to abolish the position of village
administrator and create the position of village service
supervisor.
Tom Byrne, Mount Sterling’s former village administrator,
resigned at the end of February. He had served
in the position since August 2022. The position sat vacant
over the last two-and-a-half months as village leaders
discussed how to move forward.
Mayor Andy Drake recommended to council that the
village adjust the service department positions to have
more “boots on the ground” workers. While the new village
service supervisor will advise the administration
on such items as budget needs, they will be engaged primarily
in direct response to day-to-day service needs
rather than administrative tasks.
Now, instead of a village administrator and two service
workers, the department is comprised of a village
service supervisor, a service worker 2, and a service
worker 1. The graded setup creates a structure that allows
for promotions within the department, Drake said.
He noted, too, that the changes will result in returning
between $3,000 and $4,000 to the budget.
Council voted 5-0 to authorize Drake to appoint
George Anderson to the position of village service supervisor.
Anderson was already on staff as a service
worker. His new position comes with a pay raise.
“George has been with us for quite some time. He clearly has the
skills and wherewithal,” Drake said.
Joe Hunter holds the service worker 2 position. The village is
now advertising a job opening for the service worker 1 position. Applications
are due by 5 p.m. June 7.
