August 7, 1940 – May 15, 2024<br />
erdinand <strong>Simmons</strong>, affectionately known as “Fred,” passed away<br />
peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the age of 83. Born<br />
on August 7, 1940, in Lake City, SC, Fred was the beloved son of the<br />
late Vermell Cockfield Brockington.<br />
Fred was a 1959 graduate of Carver High School in Lake City, SC. During<br />
his formative years, he accepted Christ and was an active member of Mount<br />
Moriah Baptist Church in Scranton, SC, and later Greater St. James AME<br />
Church in Lake City.<br />
After graduating, Fred enlisted in the United States Army, where he served<br />
honorably and achieved the rank of Specialist 4. His military service was a<br />
testament to his dedication and patriotism. After his discharge, he lived in<br />
various places including New Jersey, Virginia, and Myrtle Beach before finally<br />
settling in Florence, SC, which he proudly called home.<br />
Fred’s sense of style and passion for fashion led him to a fulfilling career in<br />
retail. Over the years, he worked in several prominent stores, such as Brooks<br />
Brothers and Hamrick’s, where he was well-loved and respected by colleagues<br />
and customers alike.<br />
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia <strong>Simmons</strong>; his brother, Nathan<br />
Cockfield; and his son, Gregory <strong>Simmons</strong>.<br />
He leaves behind cherished memories to his devoted and caring friend,<br />
Mary Lane of Effingham, SC; his daughter, Regina <strong>Simmons</strong> of Tacoma,<br />
Washington; close cousins, Carolyn Brown of Landover, MD and Latison<br />
(Helen) Cockfield of Florence, SC; along with a host of other cousins, family<br />
members, and friends.<br />
Fred’s kindness, love for fashion, and warm presence will be deeply missed<br />
by all who knew him. His legacy of love, service, and friendship will forever<br />
remain in the hearts of those he touched.
