SUMMER
2012
Sister Carlene Blavat was honored as the 2012
Distinguished Alumni designee of Stevens Point Area
Catholic Schools. Sister Carlene, Class of ’54, is a
member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of
St. Francis, which has its motherhouse in Stevens Point.
She was selected for her inspiring service and outreach
to her religious community, as well as to parishes, the
Diocese of La Crosse, and other roles of ministry and
involvement.
“The award, which recognizes accomplishments
and achievements of a Christian lifestyle portrayed
in both private and public life, is very well suited for
the life of Sister Carlene,” said Fr. Tom Lindner, dean
of the Stevens Point Deanery. “We are grateful to
Sister Carlene for her wonderful works of charity and
service and the inspiration she has provided to so many
through the years. We are fortunate to be able to honor
her with this well-deserved recognition.”
Sister Carlene was a graduate of St. Joseph
Academy in 1954, which was the last class graduating
from what was then named the Academy. That year was
Distinguished Alumni
designated as a Marian Year by the Catholic Church and
so, in honor of that special occasion, Academy Street
was renamed Maria Drive and the girls high school
became Maria High School.
Sister Carlene has other important connections
with the high school in addition to being an alumni.
Sister Carlene served as a teacher at both Pacelli
and Maria High Schools. She began teaching there
before the schools merged into one co-ed school. In
fact, she was the first female teacher at Pacelli, which
was then an all boys’ high school. She taught before
and during the combination of Maria and Pacelli High
Schools from 1966-1972. She is a great source of
information about the history of the schools. She served
on the reunion committee in 2006 when Pacelli’s 50th
anniversary was celebrated with an All-Years Reunion.
Born in Stevens Point, Sister Carlene attended
St. Peter’s Grade School and became a Novice of the
Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis in
August 1955. In 1962 she proudly made her perpetual
vows. She graduated magna cum laude from Alverno
College. She earned her Masters degree at St. Norbert’s
in Theological Studies.
Her ministry has taken her in many different
directions. Her first assignment was at St. Adalbert and
Blessed Sacrament Parishes in Milwaukee, WI, working
in the parish schools. In Independence, WI, she was
assigned to work at Sts. Peter and Paul School as a
teacher.
In addition to teaching, parish ministry has also led
Sister Carlene to new ventures. She served in St. James
Parish, Amherst, before coming to St. Stanislaus Parish,
Stevens Point. During her time as a pastoral minister
at St. Stanislaus, Sister Carlene was an integral part of
maintaining and overseeing the parish as they waited
for a new pastor to be assigned.
CLASS OF ‘54
Within her order, Sister Carlene has served within
the religious community as vocation and formation
minister and as a vice-president of the order.
Sister Carlene also spent three years working in the
La Crosse Diocesan Communications Office. She has
served as Chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield,
and recently retired from part-time chaplaincy at St.
Michael’s Hospital, Stevens Point. She also worked for
St. Joseph Home & Hospital in River Falls.
Missions have also brought additional
opportunities of outreach for Sister Carlene. For three
summers, Sister Carlene helped in the bayou area of
Choctaw and Bayou Bouef (in the New Orleans area).
Another year she worked in a summer youth program
in the Bronx, NY as well as a youth home in Winona,
MN. In Almond, WI, she worked with children of the
Mexican migrant workers.
Born in Stevens Point in a family of five children
all of whom proudly graduated from Catholic Schools,
Sister Carlene has three sisters, and also a brother who
recently passed away. Sister Carlene resides in Stevens
Point at the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order
of St. Francis Motherhouse. Her most recent honor
was being selected as one of 95 women featured in a
book illustrating women’s contributions to Wisconsin’s
history. The 600 page book released October 26,
2011 was titled Wisconsin Women: Celebrating their
Contributions and was written by students of D.C.
Everest High School.
The Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools would
like to congratulate Sister Carlene Blavat on her many
contributions. She was honored with a luncheon
on May 3, 2012, at Pacelli High School, as well as
recognized at the commencement services for Pacelli
High School where she addressed the Class of 2012. s
The Office of Charitable Gaming for the
Wisconsin Department of Administration–
Division of Gaming highlighted the rule of
no mailings of any kind to take place for the
distribution of raffle tickets. Though this rule
has been in effect for many years, last year it
was strictly enforced in order to maintain our
SPACS News
By the time you read this issue of The Cardinal Crest, a new
president may have been named for Stevens Point Area Catholic
Schools. Moving into the summer a nationwide search was under way
to identify a candidate to replace Jim Dyer, who resigned from the
president’s position in March. Jim, who identified personal reasons in
submitting his resignation, had been president for five years.
With the vacancy, SPACS administration has been a cooperative
venture involving Gregg Hansel, system lead principal and principal
of St. Stanislaus and St. Stephen Elementary Schools; Ellen Lopas,
principal of St. Peter Middle School and St. Bronislava Elementary
School; Jeff Brengman, principal of Pacelli High School; Lori Shafranski,
director of St. Joseph Early Childhood Center; Tammy Robinson, SPACS
controller; Fr. Tom Lindner, dean; and the SPACS system pastors.
“While we regret losing an effective and committed administrator,
we are very fortunate to have a strong leadership team to call upon
and are grateful for their willingness to take on added responsibilities
during this interim period,” said Fr. Lindner, pastor of Newman
University and St. Stanislaus Parishes, both commissioned parishes.
The Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools, carrying the rich
tradition of Catholic education for more than a century, have been
supported in many ways. One example is given in the form of
scholarships. Depending on the donor’s request, funds from scholarships
can be designated for many different causes. It can be given as
assistance to families in financial need; it can recognize students for
their specific talents; or it can emphasize the importance of service
to their community. The unique cause for the donation is even more
special when it is given in honor of someone or as a memorial for a
deceased loved one. The memory of your loved one will remain strong
and vibrant. Many of the scholarships are awarded to specific areas that
their loved one believed in. Scholarships are also established in honor of
someone who so graciously commits their lives to Catholic education.
Criteria for a scholarship and who can apply for them will depend
on the family’s wishes. Many times it can provide assistance for students
attending a specific parish, or student academic achievement. Some
scholarships will fund Pacelli underclassmen and others are designated
to the senior class as they pursue their post secondary education.
Here are some examples of scholarships generously supported by
donors and benefactors. Not only do they financially support Pacelli
students, they encourage students to be active in their community and
recognize the value of their Catholic education:
New President
“We also are grateful to the staff in our central office who have
always served us well, but have responded with even greater
dedication and care.”
The president search and screen process has been chaired by
Lynn DiSalvo, chairperson of the SPACS Commission and a member of
St. Stephen Parish. The search committee includes lay representatives
from several SPACS parishes, people with background in search and
screening processes, and two pastors.
With the appointment of the new president, a revised
administrative structure will be fully implemented. As part of this
arrangement, which has been evolving in the past few years, the
president’s primary responsibilities will be development/stewardship,
student recruitment and marketing. The lead principal will supervise
building principals, school staffing, curriculum, and programming.
The controller will be in charge of budgeting and all financial matters.
Visit www.SPACS.org for news about the appointment of a new
president. If you have questions, please contact Fr. Tom Lindner at
Carrying the Rich Tradition of Catholic Education
of purchased tickets came as a result of the
mailings to alumni, friends and supporters
from across the country in previous years, a
new challenge was presented to the Major
Raffle.
In the past, we had collected over
23,000 sold tickets. That goal could no
longer be achievable because of the inability
to mail tickets. Therefore, the Panacea Car
Raffle was revised and would only print 750
tickets to be sold with a ticket price of $100
each. The response was very favorable, as
people liked the odds of one in 750 tickets.
With the hard work of many dedicated
individuals, last year we sold every ticket
even before the drawing was to take place
on Sunday at Panacea.
This year we will continue with the same
plan and are proud to announce the grand
prize premium vehicle will be a 2012 Toyota
helping us in the purchase of this car. We
this Fall
Associated with Pacelli’s emblem are the words
Personal Education With A Christian Dimension. Pacelli
will continue to persevere in that goal by implementing some
new exciting changes this fall. These changes will benefit
students physically, spiritually and psychologically.
In addition to providing a challenging and comprehensive
curriculum to insure student’s academic achievements, Pacelli
will focus on becoming a student-centered environment. The
first area will focus on Pacelli’s Core Values. The previous
mission statement emphasized Respect, Academics, Service
and Spirituality as the set of values that will foster each
student’s continuous growth and maximum potential.
Seven Core Values are now in place:
s Christian Spirituality
s Personal Responsibility
s Academic Excellence
s Creativity
s Service
s Diversity
s Respect / Trust
Based on an example from the University High School in
Carmel, IN, which Pacelli faculty had the opportunity to visit,
the school will integrate the culture of personal responsibility
and respect for all those involved, freeing teachers and
students to focus on the issues that really matter in life. When
visiting University High School, Pacelli teachers noticed
hallways quiet and relaxed, no fear of theft (lockers did have
locks attached to them), student created artwork professionally
framed throughout the building, and individuals all over the
school fully engaged in their education. “It was easy to see that
students truly felt like it was their school and took ownership
of their education,” comments Pacelli teacher Marissa Greuel
who was part of the school tour. The commitment to the Seven
Core Values will become a vested interest to all those involved
at Pacelli, including students, staff, parents, community
members and SPACS Commission.
One way this will be put into place is through a new
mentoring program. The goal in this program is to recognize
every student at Pacelli as the unique individual they are. To
incorporate this new plan, the students will be paired up with
a faculty member to establish a meaningful relationship with
this adult throughout their entire years at Pacelli. The Faculty-
Student Mentoring program will allow the mentor to meet with
the individual student for a scheduled 30-40 minute meeting
once every two weeks, in addition to informal meetings as
needed. Faculty will be assigned about ten students, and
conduct one-on-one meetings to aid the students in assuming
responsibility of their own learning and life as they integrate
the seven core values into their lives, as well as handling
issues in scheduling, problem solving and school-to-home
communication.
Pacelli will also see changes in both semester and daily
scheduling.
s It will move into a more modified schedule
in order to give a better opportunity for teachers
to present their class lessons.
s Daily Community Meetings for entire student
body
s A new informal study hall which students are
eager to embrace
s For the first time, Pacelli will offer J-Term
courses, in which one course is taken
intensively during 13 days of school in January,
between first and second semester.
The J-Term promises to be a great opportunity for
students who can select courses based on their interests and
immerse themselves in a single subject, which will count as
a single semester class. Students will be learning through
hands-on, creative activities, as well as opportunities to travel
and have guest speakers in the class. Options for classes
will change each year based on student interest and faculty
expertise. For 2012-13, the proposed J-Term courses include:
Science, Fiction, Around the World, Time to Cook & Bake,
Mexican Culture, US Military History, Home Improvement,
Lifetime Sports, America’s Pastime: Baseball, Early Childhood
Development, SPIRIT (Musical), It Works, and Career
Development.
Pacelli will create committees of both student and
staff involvement to make the new program a success. The
committees include:
s Communication / Marketing / Public Relations
s Community and Alumni Relations
s Campus Ministry
s Curriculum and J-Term
s Culture and Core Values
s Staff Relations
These committees will meet once a month. Students
must apply to join a committee. Students serving on each
committee, which have already been selected for the
upcoming school year, are genuinely excited to become more
involved.
Pacelli faculty involved in the process of planning the
new changes in the fall, who also share a vested interest as
alumni, are Anne (Konkle) Rogalski ’86 and Marissa Greuel
’04, and have both been instrumental in developing Pacelli’s
new structure. Others involved include Mike Schmoll, teacher,
Jeff Bushman, teacher and Director of Technology for the
SPACS System and Jeff Brengman, Principal at Pacelli.
Honoring Years of Service
News
Anne Rogalski, who teaches English at Pacelli, explains,
“As an alum, I believe the changes are both a throw back
and an improvement to the education I received at Pacelli.
For example, in high school we had pep rallies at least once
a week. These community gatherings cemented a sense
of pride within the student body, whether it be celebrating
the accomplishments of students and staff, or cheering on
the next major athletic event or fine arts performance. The
daily community meetings will once again provide that
similar venue.” Rogalski also connects the new mentoring
program to her high school years. “I was grateful for the
adults who expressed a genuine interest in my life and truly
cared about me. Though we did not have a formal Faculty-
Student Mentoring Program in place, I can honestly say that
without a ‘guardian angel’ named Darlene Kilsdonk and other
outstanding teachers at Pacelli, I suspect my life would be very
different. As a current teacher at Pacelli, I cannot imagine a
student spending four years at a school and remaining ‘under
the radar’ with no significant adult relationship. For this reason
and others, I am most enthused and energized about the
mentoring program.”
Marissa Greuel, the Learning Resources Teacher at Pacelli,
also shares this enthusiasm. “I have been blessed to be part
of a long line of St. Joseph Academy, Maria High School and
Pacelli High School alumni. Each one of these parts of history
provided the students exceptional education, connection
to the community, and support for their future. As the new
generation of students enrolls at Pacelli, we need to combine
our past history with 21st century education and skills. As an
alum, I am excited to be part of the new movement at Pacelli
and am eager to see where these new aspects of education
take our students.” Reflecting on her high school years, Greuel
adds, “As a student at Pacelli, I felt invested in my education
and was given ample opportunities to become involved
through student groups and extra-curricular activities.” She
believes the new model will take that involvement one step
further. “I am most enthused about student involvement on
the school committees. The students who are members of
the various committees will be able to work alongside faculty
and staff to provide valuable input and suggestions in various
aspects of the school. The students have been selected for
the upcoming school year and have shown a great deal of
excitement and energy.”
Also in place will be assessments involving regular
student surveys and evaluations. Principal Jeff Brengman
comments, “Getting feedback from the students through
regular surveys and evaluations will allow us to know how we
are doing from the student’s perspective. The changes for next
year will create a unique situation where students are engaged
in every aspect of their education. The goal is to create a truly
student focused educational environment.” s
Marking
SSND
An End
The recent retirement of a long-time teacher
at Pacelli High School will mark the end to decades
of service given to the school by the School Sisters
of Notre Dame. Sister Susan Bunde has retired from
Pacelli after teaching for 33 years. Sister Margaret Ann
Murawski retired one year prior to her. Neither have
given up teaching completely. Rather, they will do
some substituting at Pacelli and volunteer work in the
community.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame began their service
to Pacelli in 1979. Sister Sue Clark and Sister Sue Bunde
served as the first School Sisters of Notre Dame to teach
at Pacelli. Many other Sisters followed, perhaps you
remember them as a teacher of your class?
s Sister Susan Clark served in Campus Ministry
and then taught religion. She left Pacelli in 1983.
s Sister Sue Bunde came on board as a Business
Education teacher, and in her early years taught
typing class but saw it transformed to Document
Processing by the time she left. Adjusting to
consistent change with technology, her General
Business class turned into the Introduction to
Business class. She also taught Office Procedures,
Accounting, Writing for Effective Communication,
Speech and Freshman English.
s Sister Anne Francis Probst taught math in the
early ‘80’s.
s Sister Monica Jean Welniak may be remembered
well to some alumni, as the Head Cook at
Pacelli starting in the early 80’s until 1989.
s Sister Margaret Ann Murawski came in 1983 as
an Algebra teacher, but most of her students
remember her as Hermana. She taught Spanish
during her second
year which cleared the
way to become her
trademark at Pacelli,
retiring after the
2010-11 school
year. She taught
Spanish I, II, III, IV,
and V. Though
retired, her dedication
could still be found as
she continued to tutor
students.
Sister Margaret Ann Murawski
s Sister Jane Epping
came to Pacelli to teach
math in 1984. Eventually she would become the
Dean of Students until her death. She died in
1990 after a battle with cancer. Established in
her memory, The Sister Jane Epping Academic
Honors Assembly is held each year at graduation
to present scholarships and awards, but also to
name Student of the Year Awards, which
recognizes students who demonstrate the same
values that Sister Jane modeled.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame have a long history
of serving the Church in Stevens Point. Dating back to
September 8, 1873, they began staffing St. Stephen’s
School and worked in the parish until 1991. They also
were rooted in serving St. Peter’s School from 1887-1896
in those early years of Catholic education.
The Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools have
hosted many fundraisers in support of our Catholic
Pacelli High School that earned $4,960. This
fundraiser did not involve purchasing or selling,
rather, this fundraiser asked you to drive a brand
needs of the world community, a profession which
has not changed through the course of time. For their
congregation, each day calls out to be savored, shared
and lived, whether God is calling us to act in the smallest
of neighborhoods or the most complex of cities. Today
the School Sisters of Notre Dame number more than 4500
members and they serve the Church in 31 countries.
For the most recent retirees, Sister Sue Bunde and
Sister Margaret Ann Murawski, who together have given
an incredible 61 years of service to Pacelli, they hope
to stay in Stevens Point and don’t have any grand plans
for the future yet. Sister Sue hopes to enjoy fishing and
a trip or two. Sister Sue says, “I will never forget the
wonderful friendships formed and the good times shared
working with the Christian Brothers. Also, I treasure the
friendships made with many of my colleagues both living
and deceased over the years. There were also the exciting
times of traveling to the state tournaments and cheering
on the teams... and Sister Margaret Ann and I even being
declared ‘Super Fans’ one year. And of course selling
tickets for Panacea meals and Lenten Fish Fries!!!” s
We thank and congratulate Sister Sue
Bunde and Sister Margaret Ann Murawski
and all of the School Sisters of Notre Dame
who have so faithfully served thousands of
students over the years.
development and personal development. Julie was
nominated for her amazing patience, her dedication
to SPACS families and willingness to spend many
additional hours night and day attending to the needs
of her students. She serves as a kindergarten teacher at St. Bronislava
A Family Tradition Continues
We had 10 Pacelli students who continued their family’s tradition of graduating from Pacelli High School.
Robert Sullivan Kevin (Casey) Sullivan
In 1969, I graduated from the YMCA – actually Pacelli
High School (all boys), located in the current ‘Y’ building
on Division Street. Maria High School (all girls) was in what
is now Pacelli, on Maria Drive. There were around 450
students in each school, large classes.
Our son, Bobby Sullivan, had the opportunity to
attend Pacelli in a much more intimate, smaller class-size
environment. We will never forget the words of Brother
Roger Betzold (then principal), when we sat with Bob at
orientation: “…he won’t be able to hide, here. We will
know where he is at all times.”
Those words were prophetic – there has always been
someone on hand, particularly counselors, to assist Bob
when he had problems, anxieties, or needed discipline. Back
in my years at Pacelli, the Christian Brothers on staff handled
discipline swiftly and thoroughly (a few were ex-Marines)
and counseling was mainly advice on going on to college or
joining the Army. Bob has been very fortunate to have the
advisors on the Pacelli staff available to set him on the right
path, headed by Principal Jeff Brengman, a true gem of a
leader.
Mr. Robert Gramowski was my Algebra teacher in the
mid-sixties, and we were privileged to have him back on
staff when Bob took Algebra. He patiently helped Bobby
understand the subject; I admit, I still don’t.
Bobby is a good athlete who might look back years from
now and wish he had ‘stayed the course’ more in sports at
Pacelli. He went out for football as a senior, without having
played the previous three years and actually played well and
even started a few games. Hats off to the coaches for giving
him a chance and teaching him the value of teamwork. At
least Bobby has high school sports to look back on – all I ever
did was captain and quarterback (and was the founder of) our
‘Noon Hour’ football team. I envy his letters and plaques!
Although the gap in years of my time at Pacelli and
Bobby’s is wide, we share a common, undeniable thread –
we both have been blessed with the opportunity of having
received an education of the highest quality by dedicated,
competent and caring educators.
Kyle Hopp Connie (Wasielski) Hopp
Kyle has enjoyed some very memorable moments that he
will carry with him for the rest of his life. He is very proud of
his time spent on the football field. Over the years playing ball
at Pacelli, he has learned how to be a team player, which has
taught him discipline, to be respectful, and strength, all traits
that will be useful as he grows into an adult. High school is
a time to grow and find yourself, Kyle has grown into a great
young man and has found great friendships along the way that
will never fade. After these four wonderful years at Pacelli we
know that Kyle will strive and challenge himself to be successful
in everything he does. Congratulations Kyle we are very proud
of you!
Alicia Wimme Michele (Klasinski) Wimme
As our daughter, Alicia, approached her graduation from
Pacelli, I too recalled my years in those same classrooms
and hallways. Although many of my clearest memories of
high school are ‘social’ and include popping huge bags of
popcorn for concessions, acting in plays, and going to many
football, basketball and hockey games, much of who I have
become was greatly influenced by classroom experiences.
Although many things have changed at Pacelli, (no smart
boards or lap tops in 1975!), the most important aspects
have remained steadfast – a strong academic foundation in a
community rich in Catholic values. Pacelli has and continues
to challenge our three children (Erik 2008 University of St.
Thomas, Alicia 2012 St. Norbert College and Olivia 2015
TBD) academically, socially, athletically and personally,
creating individuals with strong moral character and high
goals. Our community is blessed to have such a fantastic
Catholic education system.
We are so proud of our daughter as she
graduates from Pacelli. The same school that
I graduated from 30 years ago. The building
may have changed a little but the education and
Catholic values have remained the same. Katie’s
grandmother, Gerri (Koss) Okray graduated from St.
Joseph Academy and was extremely pleased when
we choose SPACS for our children’s education.
She always says, “Live your faith, take time for the
Lord and be all you can be”. Very wise words.
We are thankful for the many great years and for
the memories we have made. Katie has become a
wonderful and talented young woman, thanks to
all of the teachers and staff who have influenced
her with their own values and wisdom. Katie will
always have fond memories of all the musicals, plays
and concerts that she performed in. We will miss
seeing her on stage but we will never forget how she
could light up the stage. Thank you SPACS for the
memories.
I couldn’t be prouder of Mac’s accomplishments
these last four years. He was able to hone his
leadership skills in tennis, culminating with three
trips to the State Tennis Tournament. His excellent
Pacelli education serves as a solid foundation for his
studies at UW-Madison and beyond.
nathan Stoltz Lori (Koziczkowski) Stoltz
It seems just yesterday, Nathan, that you walked
into Pacelli High School as a freshman and I smiled
seeing some of the same teachers who taught me.
As you now graduate and look to your future career,
you can be confident that you will make the right
choices based on the foundation you’ve been given
through your Catholic education. If you let this
foundation shape your future, you will find yourself
making decisions that will enrich your life, and you
will notice the impact you can make on other people
whom you meet along the way. I am very thankful
that you could experience Catholic education during
all of your school years. You’ve established wonderful
friendships and have made lots of fun memories
during your high school years that won’t end because
you’ve graduated. Pacelli may never see another Ice
Fishing Club like you and your friends organized! I
believe you can do anything you set your mind to!
Remember to keep your faith in God a priority in
your life, and you will receive many blessings along
the way. I am very proud of you!
I’m proud that David is graduating from
Pacelli – 25 years after me! I’m very grateful for
the dedicated effort of the SPACS staff from both
eras, a few of whom were around to teach both of
us! Pacelli was a great place to go to school and it
continues to be today. Congratulations David and
thanks to all who taught and mentored both of us in
school, faith, and life.
Rachel Maslakow ‘08 and now Nicole Maslakow
of education the SPACS family has to offer. We
would also like to thank the teaching staff for all their
time and effort. They are all wonderful people and
deserved to be recognized. Good Luck Nicole on your
upcoming college adventures.
SPACS has provided a strong faith based
education for Steven. We have witnessed strong
values and morals expected and exemplified in
education, at school functions, in faith development
and student growth. The SPACS family centered
education is very unique. The small class sizes, and
available activities, sports, and clubs, encourage
and allow all students the opportunity to participate
and discover their strengths and abilities in different
ways. The experiences and leadership in the SPACS
system is a great contributor to the growth of
character in our children. Thank you to our SPACS
family. Congratulations Steven! You did it!
inspire a love of learning in their students, their
ability to motivate others, and their leadership
and service within and outside the classroom.”
Anne is recognized as an innovative teacher
who has made great strides in integrating 21st
Century technology in the classroom. As part
of the award, she will receive a $1,000 grant to
purchase supplies and furniture for her classroom.
Pacelli High School also receives $1,000.
Corey Ladick ’00 is running for a State Assembly
seat for the August 14, 2012, election. Corey
resides in Stevens Point and has been very busy
campaigning. Corey credits the skills he learned
at Pacelli to be very useful in his campaign, like
Mr. Gehrman’s writing class or Mrs. Jurgella’s
speech class.
Zac ’02 and Frances ’04 (Follensbee) Beggs
Rose Schneider ’08 and Nick Retzki ’07 are
engaged to be married in the summer of 2013.
Rose returned from Dublin, Ireland with a BA
currently works for the Alliance Industries in
Waupaca, WI. After their wedding, the couple
is looking forward to moving somewhere
warmer to start their family.
Brother Gary Smith, FSC, passed away on
December 24, 2011 at the age of 67 after a battle with
cancer. Brother Gary served in many locations in his 26
years as a De La Salle Christian Brother, and we are grateful
one of those locations was Pacelli High School.
At Pacelli, Brother Gary served in 1979-1984. He left
Pacelli in 1984 for another assignment but returned in 1990.
Throughout those years, he served as Dean of Students
and taught religion and social studies. His final assignment
for the last 14 years was served at Roncalli High School in
Manitowoc, WI.
Brother Gary honored us with his attendance when
Pacelli’s 50th anniversary was noted as we celebrated an
All-Years Reunion on September 9, 2006.
“
Brother Gary was very organized and particular, but had a
wonderfully dry sense of humor that I got a real kick out of. He was very
concerned about helping the students who were sort of on the outside of
the mainstream to feel connected. He wasn’t afraid to say exactly what
he thought about a situation. I enjoyed my time with him very much!
– Guy Gehrman, Fellow Teacher at Pacelli
Brother Gary is remembered for being a very strict Catholic with a
soft smiley demeanor on the surface. He had a very stout stance and
extraordinary, influential disciplinary tactics. I am very sad to hear of his
passing.
– Danielle Maher-Baron, Class of 1993
I had the pleasure to work with Brother Gary when I started teaching at
Pacelli. He had a knack for making the most intricate drawings during the
faculty meeting. Most often we watched him draw and sort of listened
during the meetings. Gary modeled the art of being well prepared, as
he would design three different lessons for each point in the Religion
curriculum he was teaching. If one wasn’t working he would switch to
the next (lesson) right in the middle of the class. Gary enjoyed taking
others to visit Chicago. He would step right out into the path of a cab to
hail it and then squish five people into the cab to save them money on
the cab fares. Gary enjoyed the simple things in life: A strong faith, good
friends, delicious food, a funny joke, teaching students and new staff how
to be better, and treating my own sons to sweets and toy fire trucks. The
one thing Br. Gary detested was Barbara Bush’s pearl necklaces because
he thought they looked fake and she wore them with almost every outfit.
Brother Gary was a very good man. He taught me a lot and when I think
back on the years I was blessed to work with him, my heart smiles.
Alumni News
Brother Gary
will always be remembered and appreciated
for his time at Pacelli High School
Four Brothers, September 2006.
L to R: Brother Roger Betzold (then-principal of Pacelli High School),
Brother Larry Schatz, Brother Gary Smith, and Brother Michael Kadow
Brother was the disciplinarian and I remember he would lock up
the bathrooms when they were damaged, perhaps hoping that if it
inconvenienced other students enough they would turn in the culprits.
Brother Gary had a good sense of humor.
– Don Slusarski, Fellow Teacher at Pacelli
When asked to write about Brother Gary Smith many words come to
mind: Christian Brother, teacher, faith-filled, generous, kind, gentle,
witty, funny, artist, friend. I taught with Brother Gary during both of his
assignments at Pacelli. Brother Gary was a very well liked and respected
teacher. The students often commented on his class as they found his
classes very interesting and fun as Brother Gary had a wit about him that
made whatever he spoke about attention grabbing. Brother Gary loved
scripture and sharing this love of scripture with students. Brother Gary
was also very aware about what was going on in the school. When I
started up the Study Skills program, there was not much money allocated
to it. One day Brother Gary came into my classroom and gave a check
to help cover the costs. I know that at his last school, Roncolli, he was
concerned about the need for a piano in their music department. Before
he died he wanted to make sure they were on their way to getting it. Of
all the gifts Brother Gary gave to all us, I was most honored to call him
friend. After he left Pacelli, a group of us would get together every other
summer just to reconnect. Brother Gary we will miss you this summer,
but know somehow you will let your presence be known…that will be
interesting! Peace, my friend.
– Darlene Kilsdonk, Fellow Teacher at Pacelli
Brother Gary was a man dedicated to God, to his brothers in community,
and to his students. We appreciated his good humor and his friendship.
Abbie Betinis
Abbie Betinis, the valedictorian of the Class of 1997, who shared her many
musical talents during her high school years, has expanded with incredible
accomplishments as a famous composer. Her music is being performed all
across the country.
Abbie’s catalog includes over fifty commissioned works inspired by
ancient and modern texts to inspire greater cultural literacy and exchange.
As a language enthusiast, she has set texts in English, Gaelic, ancient Greek,
Latin, Norwegian, medieval Persian, Spanish, Tang-era Chinese and gibberish.
Her text setting is described as “imaginative and sensitive” as she pushes
performers to explore extended vocal techniques.
In 2011, NPR Music and New York’s WQXR Public Radio listed Abbie
in the top 100 Composers Under 40. She has been honored with numerous
awards for her work. Minnesota Public Radio has partnered with American
Public Media to record and premier Abbie’s annual Christmas Carol to
an estimated audience of 800,000 listeners each year. Abbie’s music is
represented on 25 commercially-available recordings. In 2006, she founded
the Abbie Betinis Music Co., which distributes her sheet music internationally.
Abbie earned a B.A. in music with a linguistics concentration from St. Olaf
College, and M.A. in music composition from the University of Minnesota.
She has also done post-graduate work on scholarship from the European
American Musical Alliance in Paris, France.
Abbie currently resides in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she is adjunct
professor of composition at Concordia University and Composer-in-Resident
for The Schubert Club. Abbie is also an inspiration as a three-time cancer
survivor.
Abbie recently visited her hometown to feature her exquisite work. In
April, The Monteverdi Chorale’s performance included the world premier of
her composition, The Waking, which is a new work that she commissioned
especially for this event. While in Stevens Point she was able to give
presentations to the LIFE program at UW-Stevens Point, where she defined the
process behind commissioning, composing and performing a new piece of
music.
At Pacelli, Abbie was active in the marching band, pep band (playing flute
and euphonium), the concert, swing and chamber choirs (singing alto). She
also was involved in forensics, peer helpers, was the editor of “Highlights”
(student newspaper), worked in the tutoring lab as well as appearing in a
number of theater and musical theater productions.
Abbie credit’s her successes to many people at Pacelli, including Kelly
Kunst, Choir; Michael Daehn, Drama; Guy Gehrman, English; and Katy Riley,
Librarian and Student Newspaper Moderator. Abbie acknowledges them for
“pushing me to think beyond the classroom, to connect life and art, and for
insisting that I could do anything I set my heart on.” s
you can find more information about Abbie on her website
congratulate her on these wonderful achievements!

Europe
SPRING BREAK
I t is not uncommon, and
sometimes required, for students
to study abroad through their
accredited college. Pacelli has
offered a boost to this opportunity
for many years for both students
and the families that accompany
them on their Europe Trips held
during spring break.
When Marian Trzebiatowski
(Madame Trebs) started teaching French in 1999,
she presented the idea of a nine-day tour to Paris,
Versailles and the Loire Valley. On that first trip, 15
students and three adults joined her. Since then she
has organized many other trips approximately every
two to three years, collaborating with Anne Rogalski,
and the success has grown to as many as 80 people
traveling and using three tour buses.
The groups have explored much
of Western Europe, traveling to
London, France, Spain, Germany,
Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Monaco,
and Portugal. The traveling will
never become redundant for Marian
Trzebiatowski. She remarks, “One
of the most inspiring things for me
to see is that after taking a Spring
Break trip with Pacelli, many alum
later tour Europe on their own or
study abroad.”
Jon Mallek ’09 found many benefits to exploring
Europe while in high school. “Having already
traveled to Paris with Pacelli in high school, I was
able to see that it is, in fact, possible to navigate
through a country that doesn’t speak English as a
first language. When the time came to decide where
to study abroad in France, I had the option of an all-
English American university in the south or an all-
French, full immersion university in the north. With
the confidence I gained on the Pacelli trip traveling
through with only limited high school level French,
I knew that I could handle the full immersion
university and I haven’t regretted it since!”
The price of the trip includes ground
transportation, flights, hotels, dinners and tours.
Many times entire families have come together and
experienced an awesome trip with many amazing
sites shared as a family. As one parent commented,
“The package of the trip was very cost effective. We
Marian Trzebiatowski
‘Madam Trebs’
would never have
been able to travel
like this on our
own.”
Another
benefit in
experiencing the
trip abroad is that
the students get a
taste of the lifestyle
which intrigues
them to study abroad when they are in college.
One parent noted that because their son was able
to see how everyday life is in Paris, he was more
comfortable when he traveled abroad in college.
He knew how to use the subways and get around in
Paris because of his experience on the Europe trip.
Parents also experience an educational trip.
Commenting about the trip with her daughter, Liz
Blonigen said, “It is neat to connect things
happening oversees with the events you hear
on the news. On our trip, we saw first hand
the protests going on in Athens, Greece and
it had a much greater impact to me by being
there.”
The next trip is scheduled from March
20-28, 2013. The group begins in Paris for
three days, as they visit places like the Louvre,
Musée d’Orsay, Notre Dame Cathedral,
Montmartre, the Arc de Triomphe, and of
course the Eiffel Tower. After an overnight
train to Italy, they will tour the cities of Verona,
Balzano, the Dolomite Mountains, and end the trip
in Venice. A full time, multilingual, professional tour
guide accompanies the group to France and Italy.
Only a few spots are open yet for the trip, which will
be taking about 30 people in 2013.
Many Pacelli alumni can attest to a great
experience and many memories from the Europe
Trip, and cherish the fun they had there with family
and friends. As one of the coordinators, Anne
Rogalski recalls, “When I think back on the trips,
so many memories of amazing people, places, and
events come to mind, such as being within a few
feet of Pope John Paul II and hearing him welcome
Pacelli High School to the Vatican, and watching
the Familia Sagrada in Barcelona evolve over visits
(construction began in the 1880s).” s
PACELLI
EUROPEAN
TOUR
by Tyler Kruzicki, ‘03
Ever since my first experience traveling in
Europe (Pacelli European Tour 2002), I seem to have
caught what one might call, the ‘expat bug’. After being
immersed into the rich cultural and linguistic pool
during my travels abroad with Pacelli High School, I
cannot seem to get enough of living abroad and making
new discoveries every day.
During my Undergraduate studies, I was presented
with the wonderful opportunity to study abroad for a
year in the dream-like city of Aix-en-Provence in the
South of France. Following this academic school year, I
traveled to the city of Las Palmas (the largest city of Gran
Canaria, one of the 7 Spanish islands located near the
coast of Southern Morocco) where I studied Spanish
and traveled around the island for 3 months.
After returning stateside to finish my Undergraduate
studies at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, I
decided to embark on an entirely different voyage to
Seoul, South Korea. In cooperation with UW-Madison,
I taught in the public school system as an Elementary
school English teacher for two years. This experience
opened my eyes even wider and developed a newfound
love for Asian languages and cultures. Ever since, I have
maintained my Korean language skills and am currently
recording for a Korean language textbook DVD for
French speakers.
I am currently living in Lyon, France and have
simultaneously completed my Master’s degree in
Foreign Language Education and ICT (Information and
Communications Technology) for teaching and my
first year as a language TA teaching translation at the
University of Lyon 2. Recently offered a promotion to
become a Junior Lecturer of Foreign Languages, I plan
on fulfilling my two-year contract while considering
the possibility of pursuing doctoral studies in the near
future.
Needless to say, this incredible experience offered
by Pacelli High School (and the never-ending motivation
and positivity of Madame Trebs) has changed my life
for good. It’s nearly impossible to imagine what my
life would have become had I never been presented
with such a wonderful opportunity to discover new
cultures and languages. An opportunity that should
continue existing and that will become increasingly
more important as the world enters into a further state
of globalization. s
