<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be a resource for <strong>the</strong> neighborhood and city particularly for children<br />

and families. The <strong>College</strong> hosts community organizations and programs like<br />

ConnectiKids and <strong>the</strong> Olympic Fever on Ice at <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong>. ConnectiKids br<strong>in</strong>gs more<br />

than 40 local fifth graders to campus every week for one-on-one mentor<strong>in</strong>g and tutor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> students and staff. The Olympic Fever on Ice at <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong>, a partnership<br />

with <strong>the</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong> Education and Hartford Public Schools, br<strong>in</strong>gs Melissa<br />

Gregory and Denis Petukhov, 2006 W<strong>in</strong>ter Olympians and four time U.S. National Ice<br />

Danc<strong>in</strong>g Silver Medalists to campus to provide an opportunity for 40 middle-school<br />

students from Portland and Hartford to come toge<strong>the</strong>r to reduce racial and economic<br />

isolation while be<strong>in</strong>g taught to skate as well as to receive academic mentor<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong> celebrates 10 years <strong>of</strong> collaboration with Boys and Girls Clubs <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong> Boys and Girls Club. The <strong>College</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />

provide f<strong>in</strong>ancial support to <strong>the</strong> club and also provides opportunities for <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> students<br />

to work and volunteer at <strong>the</strong> club year around serv<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong><br />

hundreds <strong>of</strong> neighborhood children.<br />

The Koeppel <strong>Community</strong> Sports Center opens with more than 10 community groups and<br />

1,000 Hartford school children participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> skat<strong>in</strong>g programs. More than 800 students<br />

volunteer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city at least once annually and over 700 undergraduates annually<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> city-related <strong>in</strong>ternships and courses. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> also enters its 10th year <strong>of</strong><br />

host<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Dream Camp for 300 children from Hartford. Work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Connecticut<br />

Council on Humanities, <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to run a free, 10-month-long humanities<br />

program that <strong>of</strong>fers Hartford residents a chance to earn two college credits and an<br />

entrée <strong>in</strong>to higher education.<br />

The <strong>Community</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g Initiative (CLI) celebrates 10 years with a two-day<br />

campus/community symposium encourag<strong>in</strong>g academic collaboration among Hartford<br />

Consortium schools and community organizations. The Carnegie Foundation for <strong>the</strong><br />

Advancement <strong>of</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g recognizes <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong> for its community engagement.<br />

SINA successfully completes Phase I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cityscape Homes project with <strong>the</strong><br />

construction and rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> 31 neighborhood homes. Tr<strong>in</strong>fo.Café donates<br />

refurbished computers to all SINA Cityscape homeowners and residents <strong>of</strong> south<br />

Hartford. More than 300 families receive computers and nearly 2,000 <strong>in</strong>dividuals get free<br />

computer literacy tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Sports Complex, a partnership between SINA and<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The multiple-use athletic facility will serve primarily as a skat<strong>in</strong>g center<br />

and provide safe recreational space for Hartford children, families, and <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

area.<br />

W.K. Kellogg Foundation awards <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> $1.6 million bridge grant to support cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

urban engagement <strong>in</strong>itiatives. In addition to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and expand<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

community programs, <strong>the</strong> award <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> community-based learn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement at <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> and evaluates <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution’s urban <strong>in</strong>itiatives. The Saturday<br />

Academy receives state fund<strong>in</strong>g for cont<strong>in</strong>ued success with educat<strong>in</strong>g middle school<br />

students and <strong>the</strong>ir parents.

The Rockefeller Foundation's Partnerships <strong>in</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Transformation program<br />

awards <strong>the</strong> Hartford Studies Project (HSP) $100,000 for <strong>the</strong> Hartford 1969/2004: a<br />

community documentary film project, toward <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> a documentary and public<br />

film archive on <strong>the</strong> recent history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. The grant is received <strong>in</strong> conjunction with <strong>the</strong><br />

HSP's work with n<strong>in</strong>e community partners: NAACP, Hartford Public Library, SAND, CRT,<br />

La Voz, Shiloh Baptist Church, Broad Park Development Corporation, All Our Children,<br />

and Walk <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light M<strong>in</strong>istries. The award is part <strong>of</strong> a $219,000 package,<br />

supplemented by $48,000 <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>-k<strong>in</strong>d support from Motion, Inc., and ongo<strong>in</strong>g support from<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> receives a Mutual <strong>of</strong> America <strong>Community</strong> Partnerships Award for its work with<br />

The Boys and Girls Clubs <strong>of</strong> Hartford. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> partners with SINA to improve employment<br />

services and programs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. The cont<strong>in</strong>ued growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>'s global sites<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases opportunities for urban engagement <strong>in</strong> locations around <strong>the</strong> world: Barcelona,<br />

Santiago, Moscow, Tr<strong>in</strong>idad, Istanbul, Katmandu, Cape Town, and Rome.<br />

The Marie and John Zimmermann Fund <strong>of</strong> New York awards <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> a $330,000 grant to<br />

establish a tutor<strong>in</strong>g and mentor<strong>in</strong>g program enabl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> undergraduates to work with<br />

Hartford Magnet Middle School students, located on <strong>the</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor. SINA<br />

receives <strong>the</strong> American Architectural Foundation award for br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r public and<br />

private sector <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> a community build<strong>in</strong>g effort.<br />

The Cities Data Center produces <strong>the</strong> first edition Hartford Primer & Field Guide, which<br />

provides <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and <strong>the</strong> community with essential data about Hartford and <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>fo.Café beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a Computer Technician Apprenticeship Program for Hartford<br />

teens, with assistance from Computers4Kids.<br />

American Plann<strong>in</strong>g Association awards <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and SINA its “Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Award” <strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> comprehensive community improvement <strong>in</strong>itiatives. The<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor opens for classes serv<strong>in</strong>g approximately 800 students with overall<br />

operations provided by <strong>the</strong> Capitol Region Education Council (CREC). Pre-programm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> anticipation <strong>of</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aetna Center for Families to provide<br />

parent<strong>in</strong>g, pediatric wellness, school read<strong>in</strong>ess, and childcare programs on The Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Corridor campus. Tr<strong>in</strong>fo.Café opens adjacent to The Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor and <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

technical support, Web design, computer literacy and pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

workshops, and computer hardware to neighborhood residents, community<br />

organizations, and bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />

Boys & Girls Club at <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong> opens <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ann and Thomas S. Johnson build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on Broad Street across from <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>'s play<strong>in</strong>g fields. This is <strong>the</strong> first Boys & Girls Club<br />

affiliated with a college. Its open<strong>in</strong>g was celebrated at a dedication ceremony attended<br />

by General Col<strong>in</strong> Powell (Ret.), <strong>the</strong>n chairman <strong>of</strong> America’s Promise—The Alliance for<br />

Youth. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> was also named by America’s Promise as a national "<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Promise.”<br />

HART and SINA partners create Neighborhood Block Watch Program, with community<br />

polic<strong>in</strong>g bicycle patrols based out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>.<br />

W.K. Kellogg Foundation awards <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> $5.1 million grant to support <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s plans<br />

to streng<strong>the</strong>n campus-community connections that emphasize civic renewal and<br />

educational <strong>in</strong>novation. Initiatives <strong>in</strong>clude completion <strong>of</strong> The Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor, new<br />

faculty and academic resources focused on <strong>in</strong>fus<strong>in</strong>g urbanism <strong>in</strong>to teach<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

research, enhanced community learn<strong>in</strong>g and volunteerism for students, and a “smart<br />

neighborhood" center to improve community access to <strong>in</strong>formation technology.

The <strong>Community</strong> Service and Civic Engagement Office is formalized to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g student leadership development <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hartford community. The Mega-Cities<br />

Program is located on campus, l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> to 19 cities throughout <strong>the</strong> world and<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g new opportunities for academic pursuits, community service and corporate<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternships around <strong>the</strong> world. Inter-Neighborhood Collaborative (INC) formed by area<br />

merchants, leaders and residents to develop strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g for area neighborhoods<br />

assisted by <strong>in</strong>ternational urban planner Ken Greenberg.<br />

The first Dream Camp was held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1998 and served 100 children from<br />

Hartford <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first, second, and third grades. It currently reaches over 300 students<br />

annually and consists <strong>of</strong> a traditional summer program for children ages six though 16<br />

and an academic mentor<strong>in</strong>g program dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> school year. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> students serve as<br />

tutors and mentors throughout <strong>the</strong> academic year, and many rema<strong>in</strong> as camp<br />

counselors dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer. With an annual retention rate greater than 85 percent<br />

year to year, Dream Camp’s programs and objectives have evolved to reflect <strong>the</strong> current<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> campers.<br />

Successful <strong>in</strong>stitutional, federal, state, local, and corporate fundrais<strong>in</strong>g marks groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> The Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor. The plan will clean up a 16-acre urban brown field<br />

adjacent to <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and Hartford Hospital as <strong>the</strong> site for a new magnet Montessori<br />

elementary School, magnet Hartford Middle School, and two magnet high school<br />

programs -- Greater Hartford Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts and Greater Hartford Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Science.<br />

Saturday Academy beg<strong>in</strong>s on campus to provide academic enrichment and leadership<br />

opportunities for Hartford middle school students and families. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> receives Habitat<br />

for Humanity chapter on campus.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> announces plans for a comprehensive $175 million Neighborhood Revitalization<br />

Initiative to rebuild a community <strong>in</strong>frastructure for families that susta<strong>in</strong>s stable home<br />

ownership, neighborhood economic development and educational improvement. The<br />

cornerstone <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong>itiative is planned construction <strong>of</strong> The Learn<strong>in</strong>g Corridor as a state<strong>of</strong>-<strong>the</strong><br />

art educational park. The effort is supported by a pioneer<strong>in</strong>g private-public<br />

partnership between <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and its <strong>in</strong>stitutional partners and neighbors. Kev<strong>in</strong> B.<br />

Sullivan appo<strong>in</strong>ted vice president for community and <strong>in</strong>stitutional relations to oversee <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>’s expanded community engagement.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> launches Cities Program, a non-major gateway program for students<br />

wish<strong>in</strong>g to make <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> cities an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir liberal arts education. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong><br />

also jo<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g HART Jobs Center/El Centro de Trabajo to provide employment<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, counsel<strong>in</strong>g and referral for neighborhood residents. SINA beg<strong>in</strong>s full<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> Cityscape hous<strong>in</strong>g redevelopment program aimed at first time<br />

homebuyers.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> Center for Neighborhoods (TCN) <strong>of</strong>fers fellowships to <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> graduates <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir master’s degree while contribut<strong>in</strong>g back to Hartford as community<br />

organizers. Carlos Esp<strong>in</strong>osa receives <strong>the</strong> first fellowship worked for HART as a full-time<br />

community organizer while pursu<strong>in</strong>g a degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>’s Public Policy program.<br />

New <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> president Evan Dobelle comb<strong>in</strong>es experience <strong>in</strong> higher education and public<br />

service to advocate broader focus on liberal arts, community engagement, public-private<br />

partnerships, and stabilization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community around <strong>the</strong> campus. Office <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Community</strong> and Institutional Relations (OCIR) created with Eddie Perez as associate<br />

vice president. <strong>Community</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g Initiative (CLI) launched as a college-wide<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Charter Oaks Tenants Association, Capital <strong>Community</strong>-Technical<br />

<strong>College</strong>, and several o<strong>the</strong>r educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions - <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g local public schools - came<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r to form a Campus <strong>of</strong> Learners Committee (COLC) for <strong>the</strong> Charter Oak public<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g development. COLC l<strong>in</strong>ked residents to exist<strong>in</strong>g job-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and educational<br />

programs <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> partner <strong>in</strong>stitutions and developed new programs designed to<br />

meet unmet needs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g free Internet access and computer literacy tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

to residents by <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> Center for Neighborhoods (TCN) funded by U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Hous<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Urban Development to spur community outreach. TCN <strong>of</strong>fers tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, data resources,<br />

and applied research assistance to community groups. Grassroots problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

committees created to help neighborhood residents and bus<strong>in</strong>esses address community<br />

issues.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> hosts <strong>the</strong> annual Urban Issues Forum, featur<strong>in</strong>g local and national authorities on<br />

urban problems exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> political, ideological, and policy<br />

standpo<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

Major neighborhood crisis develops due to gang violence and drug traffick<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>College</strong><br />

jo<strong>in</strong>s with residents to rally support through HART for successful federal, state, and local<br />

crack-down on gangs, drug deal<strong>in</strong>g, and prostitution. The CityTerm Program beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fall semester, which allows students to undertake full-time public or non-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternships.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>, <strong>in</strong> partnership with SINA and HART, establish Frog Hollow Revitalization Project,<br />

target<strong>in</strong>g a 15 square-block area immediately to <strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> campus for a pilot<br />

neighborhood development project. Plans beg<strong>in</strong> for a new magnet elementary school<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitutional improvements.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong> HART HOME Program, <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>s provid<strong>in</strong>g up to $10,000 <strong>in</strong> down<br />

payment and clos<strong>in</strong>g cost assistance to residents <strong>of</strong> Hartford who buy an owneroccupied<br />

home adjacent to <strong>the</strong> campus.<br />

As national and state recession worsens economic conditions <strong>in</strong> city neighborhoods,<br />

Eddie Perez is appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>College</strong>’s director <strong>of</strong> community relations report<strong>in</strong>g directly to<br />

<strong>the</strong> President. Perez is widely recognized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community for his advocacy and<br />

leadership. The Hartford Studies Project began as an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary workshop on <strong>the</strong><br />

post-Civil War era <strong>in</strong> Hartford and <strong>the</strong> region with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention <strong>of</strong> illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> city's<br />

past and present.<br />

Neighborhood Posse program created for <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> student volunteers to spend time with<br />

Hartford children for one-on-one group tutor<strong>in</strong>g and recreation. <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> faculty <strong>in</strong>tensifies<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> programs aimed at motivat<strong>in</strong>g secondary school students and broaden<strong>in</strong>g<br />

educational opportunities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a Talented and Gifted Program, Connecticut Pre-<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Program, and Upward Bound.<br />

High School Colloquium created to <strong>in</strong>troduce local high school students to college and<br />

encourage <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary studies.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> opens <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Child Center for neighborhood families and <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong><br />

Broad-Park Development Corporation formed by SINA, HART, and area merchants to<br />

promote commercial and residential redevelopment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood.<br />

HART (Hartford Areas Rally Toge<strong>the</strong>r) neighborhood alliance formed by residents and<br />

clergy to advocate for community improvement and <strong>in</strong>vestment. Alta Lash becomes<br />

HART’s first board president and later among HART’s pr<strong>in</strong>cipal community organizers.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> and Rensselear Polytechnic Institute funded by U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Education to<br />

create TRICE: <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>College</strong>/Rensselear Institutes for <strong>Community</strong> Education. TRICE<br />

provides city residents and organizations with research and educational <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Upward Bound, a federally funded college program for low-<strong>in</strong>come, first-generation high<br />

school students, established on-campus.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> hosts Connecticut Educational Sem<strong>in</strong>ar affiliated with <strong>the</strong> national Institute for<br />

Educational Leadership. Legislative and academic leaders meet to discuss educational<br />

issues fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> state and its cities.<br />

New urban and environmental studies programs provide academic base for study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

city. Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>ternship opportunities expand. <strong>Community</strong> Forums held to<br />

focus on improv<strong>in</strong>g educational opportunities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

First <strong>College</strong>-funded and student-run community action center (TCAC) founded by Kev<strong>in</strong><br />

Sullivan, ’71, which became <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>’s Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Service. Students volunteer<br />

for tutor<strong>in</strong>g and recreation programs, assist community organizations, and arrange<br />

courses <strong>in</strong> urban related topics.<br />

<strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> creates an Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Affairs and appo<strong>in</strong>ts Robert Pawlowski as its<br />

director.<br />

First full-time undergraduate legislative <strong>in</strong>ternship program established, with students<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g local and state policies.<br />

Urban planner Constant<strong>in</strong>e Dioxides’ visionary report, “The <strong>Tr<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>Community</strong>,” marks<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s first concentrated effort to consider its role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city.<br />

Mid 1960s Grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>College</strong> awareness focuses on economic <strong>in</strong>security and neighborhood<br />

deterioration as Hartford’s <strong>in</strong>dustrial base decl<strong>in</strong>es. <strong>Community</strong> volunteerism <strong>in</strong>creases<br />

among students and <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s first <strong>in</strong>ternship program beg<strong>in</strong>s.
