Houghton Mifflin Children's Books Launches Paperback Imprint for
Young Adults
Boston, Massachusetts — Houghton Mifflin Books for Children proudly announces Graphia, a
new young adult paperback imprint. The first list launches in Spring 2004 with six titles.
Graphia's mission of publishing quality paperbacks for today's teen readers builds on the
tremendous success and unparalleled awards history of Houghton Mifflin's hardcover
juvenile line. "Graphia brings Houghton Mifflin's long-standing tradition of literary excellence
to young adults in an exciting, accessible way. Books published under the imprint give the
'cutting edge' a new dimension," says Andrea Davis Pinkney, vice president and publisher of
Houghton Mifflin Books for Children.
Graphia has a distinct brand identity through its publishing, design, sales, and marketing
philosophy, encapsulated in the slogan "It's about the book." The name Graphia, derived
from the Greek word meaning "to write," signifies the quality literature that is the hallmark
of this new line. Houghton Mifflin plans to build the list by publishing original paperbacks, by
retaining rights to key Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, Walter Lorraine, and Clarion
books, and by selectively acquiring outside titles.
The imprint features the works of Houghton Mifflin's high-profile authors as well as new
talents and publishes a variety of genres, including classic and contemporary fiction,
nonfiction, poetry, and graphic novels. Titles on the initial list include the Graphia paperback
original 48 Shades of Brown by Nick Earls; Comfort by Carolee Dean; 3 NBs of Julian Drew
by James M. Deem; Owl in Love by Patrice Kindl; Dunk by David Lubar; and Zazoo by
Richard Mosher.
Upcoming lists will include Graphia originals by new writers: The Candy Darlings by Christine
Walde and Confessions of a 10th Grade Social Climber by Zoe Seigel. Other titles slated for
future lists include I Can't Tell You by new voice Hillary Frank and Story for a Black Night by
Clayton Bess, a Phoenix Award Honor recipient. Authors George Harrar, Claire Rudolph
Murphy, VIBE magazine contributor Kevin Powell, and Australian phenomenon Nick Earls will
all contribute to Graphia's growing list — more quality publishing with a modern twist.
Houghton Mifflin's Trade and Reference Division publishes adult, juvenile, and reference
books. Its adult titles encompass literary fiction and a broad spectrum of nonfiction, as well
as its highly regarded trade paperback line, Mariner Books. Houghton Mifflin's children's list
