Sultan bin Zayed pays tribute to the UAE 

founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

President, Chairman of 

Emirates Heritage Club 

and Chairman of the Media 

Cultural Centre, opened 

today the two-day long first 

annual gathering on the 

life and times of the UAE 

founder, Sheikh Zayed bin 

Sultan Al Nahyan, which 

is being organised by both 

the club and centre at Abu 

Dhabi Hilton. He said 

in his inaugural speech 

that “we gather today to 

commemorate the founder, 

leader and father the late 

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan 

Al Nahyan, who has been 

present spiritually among us 

despite his physical absence 

since 2004.” Sheikh Sultan 

underscored that Sheikh 

Zayed had left a rich legacy 

that could not be forgotten, 

adding that the gathering 

was held to pay tribute to 

Sheikh Zayed. “Sheikh 

Zayed is still living in the 

memory of UAE people, 

Arab and Muslim Ummah. 

His name reverberates when 

his deeds are mentioned at 

the international forums”, 

he said. Ahmed Khalifa

President, thanked Sheikh 

Sultan for inviting him 

to attend the gathering 

held in tribute of the late 

Sheikh Zayed, who laid 

the foundation of the UAE 

Union on Dec. 02, 1971, 

with support of the Their 

Highnesses Rulers of the 

Emirates, Crown Princes and 

the UAE people. Al Suwaidi, 

who called on the audience 

to stand up for a minute’s 

silence on the soul of the 

late Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi, 

the former Ruler of Ra’s 

Al Khaimah, reminded the 

audience that Sheikh Saqr Al 

Qasimi, was the last of the 

seven rulers, who founded the 

Union in 1971. Al Suwaidi 

thanked President H.H. 

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al 

Nahyan for following in the 

footsteps and course of the 

late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan 

Al Nahyan. He also thanked

the moon on this coming 

Saturday in any place in the 

Islamic world. Nonetheless,

Since the moon will be seen 

somewhere in the world, 

some countries will judge 

this sufficient to celebrate 

the Eid in the 16th of 

November. 

For the countries who 

insist in seeing the moon 

in their land, and for those 

who won’t be able to see 

it on this coming Saturday, 

they will begin the month 

of Hajj on Monday the 

8th of November and will 

celebrate Eid on Wednesday 

the 17th.

Hajj…The Fifth Pillar Of Islam 


Hajj is the biggest gathering 

of Muslims. Muslims from 

all over the world meet to 

worship their Lord and all 

barriers including language, 

color, class and race are 

broken. 

Almighty Allah says, “And 

Hajj (pilgrim) to Makkah 

to the House (Kaabah) is a 

duty that mankind owes to 

Allah the Great, those who 

can afford the expenses (for 

one’s conveyance, provision 

and residence) and whoever 

disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj 

(pilgrimage to Makkah), 

then he is a disbeliever of 

Allah], then Allah stands not 

in need of any of the “Alameen 

(mankind and jinns).” 

{Surah Al’ Imran Verse 97.} 

Hajj is compulsory upon 

every Muslim under the 

following condition: (1) Islam 

(2) Maturity (3) Healthy and 

physically fit (4) Mentally 

sound (5) Security (6) Enough 

money to cover the journey 

to and fro and leave enough 

money for his dependents. 

With refrence to umrah 

there are three kinds of hajj 

that are performed;Tamatu 

which has a break between 

performance of Umrah and 

Hajj. After performing the 

Umrah the pilgrim removes 

his ihram and enjoys all that 

a non-pilgrim enjoys; he then 

takes the ihram again on the 

eight of Dhul Hijja and makes 

the intention for Hajj. Ifrad 

where the pilgrim performs 

Hajj only and Qiran in which 

the pilgrim performs Umrah 

and hajj without any break

between both. After making 

the intention of performing 

hajj there are many conditions 

and rituals as well that every 

Muslin should follow. 

The most important being 

the wearing of Ihram. Miqaat 

means a station. It is a place 

where pilgrims make intention 

to perform Hajj, Umrah or 

both. At the Miqaat, pilgrims 

make intention in respect 

to the type of Hajj he or 

she intends to perform and 

then put on the ihram. (The 

two pieces of unsown white 

clothes, women can however 

wear any cloth which covers 

their entire body). On the 

tenth of Dhul Hijja, pilgrims 

are required to throw seven 

pebbles at Jamrat Aqaba. 

The Jamrat is only symbol of 

devil. Pilgrims throw seven 

pebbles at the jamrat Aqabah 

saying “Allah Akbar” (Allah 

is the Greatest) each time 

one throws the pebbles. After 

throwing the pebbles, pilgrims 

performing Hajj Ifrad trim 

or shave their head (women 

however trim their head) and 

remove the Ihram cloth but 

should spend the two or three 

following nights at Mina 

until they finish throwing 

the pebbles. Pilgrims then 

slaughter their animals and 

take off the Ihram and put on 

the usual cloth.

Al Ain students in humanitarian 

trip to India 


It took Dh60, 000, more than 

six hours of travel and 10 days 

in a remote Indian village for 

nine students from Al Ain 

Men’s College to learn the 

lesson of their lives. 

The students, accompanied by 

their school counselor Imad 

Jarwan, travelled to a village 

near Hyderabad this month to 

help build three houses with 

Habitat for Humanity. The 

humanitarian visit was the 

first of its kind for the college, 

which is attempting to expand 

its global reach. 

“Each moment there was 

brilliance,” said Mohammad 

al Sayari, a 20-year-old 

Emirati studying business. 

“We spent all our time with 

people and working to build 

houses, and I learnt a lot of 

things about appreciating 

what we have here in our 

country and helping all the 

poor people in the world.” 

The students raised most of 

the money for the trip after 

failing to find sponsors. 

They paid for their travel 

and bought materials for the 

village, which has no roads or 

running water. 

“This project was a chance to 

enhance the students’ global 

view and give them a little 

international experience,” Mr 


Mobile medical screening 

units went out to schools 

last week to gather a clearer 

picture of the health of the 

capital’s children. 

Four mobile units will 

examine students in grades 

one, five and nine in 

government schools in Al Ain, 

Al Gharbia and Abu Dhabi 

municipality. 

“By the end of the year, we 

will have a database to see 

the situation of students in 

government schools,” said 

Dr Mubarak al Darmaki, 

the acting head of health 

management at the Abu Dhabi 

Education Council (Adec). 

Jarwan said. “It gave them 

an idea of what goes on in 

the world around them, and 

they will now be able to look 

at things from a different 

experience.” 

The students provided labor 

at the work sites, mixing 

concrete, carrying bricks, and 

transporting piles of sand. 

Sultan al Darmaki, a 22-yearold 

Emirati studying business, 

said it had been difficult at 

first to absorb the poverty and 

bleak living conditions. 

“But when we saw the people 

and the smiles on their faces, 

that was nice,” Mr al Darmaki 

said. 

During a trip to an orphanage 

in Bidar, the students pooled 

their resources to sponsor a 

child living there for the next

adult locals have diabetes; 

what about children?” 

He said the unit would 

also screen for problems or 

disabilities that could affect 

academic performance. 

“Some kids are neglected,” 

he said, “and if we detect any 

abnormalities then we can 

take the next step of providing 

special education for the 

child.” 

The units - each of which is 

staffed by a nurse, doctor, 

dentist, and technicians - will 

record each pupil’s medical 

history, test their vision and 

hearing, and take blood 

year. 

“What they saw there was 

a life totally different from 

their own,” said Tim Smith, 

the college’s acting director. 

“I don’t think they expected 

what they saw there, and they 

got a lot more out of it than 

just building houses.” 

Al Ain Men’s College, a 

school of the Higher Colleges 

of Technology, is working on 

expanding its community and 

global outreach programmes 

and has emphasized charity 

work as a way of forming 

global partnerships, Mr 

Jarwan said. Next, he hopes to 

organize a humanitarian trip 

to Africa. 

The students will make a 

presentation about their 

project at the college in 

November. 

Mobile Medical Screening Units

into a report that will be used 

to formulate health education. 

Adec hopes that during the 

next three to four years it 

will be able to establish a full 

medical report for all 30,000 

pupils in government schools. 

Mai, a nurse at a school in Al 

Ain, said the records would 

help her in her work. “It’s 

important for when there is 

an emergency and we need 

to know more about the 

students’ medical history,” she 

said. “We cannot always rely 

on what the child tells us.”

conference gathered teachers,

representatives to learn from

During his speech, Al Qattami 

explained that the Ministry of

Dhabi University for sharing 

the views of the Ministry in 

educating gifted and special 

needs student through a 

conference that showcased 

a range of learning and 

educational experiences in 

the field of special education 

from local and international 

experts. This will ensure 

excellence on providing best 

practices which can be applied 

to the UAE education sector. 

The conference also tackled 

the growing requirements 

for the development of a 

tailored curriculum including 

the strategic planning and 

international standards for the 

education of gifted students in 

the region. Entitled “Actively 

Improving the Education of 

Gifted ‘&’ Talented Children”, 

the two-day conference was 

organised by Abu Dhabi 

University (ADU) Department 

of Education, College of Arts 

and Sciences.

Kalima publishes “Discoveries 

and Opinions of Galileo” 


Kalima, the translation project 

of the Abu Dhabi Authority 

for Culture and Heritage 

(ADACH), has published the 

Arabic translation of the book 

“Discoveries and Opinions 

of Galileo”. This was 

written by Galileo Galilei, 

the great Italian physicist, 

mathematician, astronomer 

and philosopher who played 

a major role in the Scientific 

Revolution. Galileo’s book 

consists of four works: The 

Starry Messenger, Letters on 

Sunspots, Letter to the Grand 

Duchess Christina, and The 

Assayer. These works were 

beautifully translated into 

English by Stillman Drake, 

a professor of the History 

of Science at the University 

of Toronto. He omitted 

unnecessary parts of the 

texts to avoid verbosity and 

monotony, while still keeping 


Pink October, the month-long 

campaign in support of breast 

cancer awareness initiated by 

Abu Dhabi Media Company 

(ADMC), concluded on a

Breast Cancer Awareness 

Month Concludes On A 

Hopeful Note 

A strong advocate for the 

prevention, protection and 

improvement of women’s 

health, HAAD launched the 

simplycheck.ae website in 

April 2009, with the aim to 

raise awareness about breast 

cancer and empower women 

across the UAE through an 

innovative and customized 

approach. 

To date simplycheck.ae has 

helped thousands of women 

and is proof that knowledge 

saves lives. During October 

2010 the site was visited by 

25,931 women for advice 

and screenings. This major 

accomplishment was celebrated 

in a community event held 

at Zayed Sports City, with 

a number formation - the 

visualization of this outstanding 

figures - so that the message is 

heard loud and clear. 

“Through the Pink October 

initiative, we have developed 

a unique platform to help 

raise awareness about breast 

cancer and the importance of 

prevention, as well as draw 

community involvement. 

We are thankful to all the 

participating organizations 

and the community who 

brought this campaign to 

life through their voluntary

Two ADACH books win awards at 

Sharjah International Book Fair 

Al Ain Times: 

The book titled “The Poetry of 

Kaab bin Maadan Al Ashqari”, 

written by author Ahmed 

Mohammed Obaid was given the 

award of the Best UAE Author 

Book, while Dr. Fatima Hamad Al 

Mazrouei’s book title “Monafarat 

in Pre-Islamic Literature” have 

won the award of Best UAE Book 

in the field of Studies at |Sharjah 

International Book Fair. The book 

“The Poetry of Kaab bin Maadan 

Al Ashqari” was compiled and 

researched by Emirati researcher 

Ahmed Mohamed Obaid. Al 

Ashqari was born in Oman in 

the first century of the Islamic 

calendar, and he is a renowned 

Umayyad-era poet. Ashqari’s 

poetry was influenced by the great 

pride he felt for his large Al Azad 

tribe. Ashqari accompanied the 

famous warrior Al Muhallab bin 

Abi Safra and his sons in their 

battles in Khorasan (presentday 

Iran). Khorasan’s reign was 

taken over by Qutaiba Baahili, an 

enemy of Muhallab. Ashqari then 

satirized Yazid, and this prompted 

some unexpected outcomes which

ultimately led to him fleeing to 

Oman, where he was later killed 

Obaid said that what we have 

gained from Ashqari’s poetry is 

negligible compared to the poetry 

of his contemporaries. However, 

there is much information that 

contradicts this claim. 

“The joy of this award is twofold. 

On the one hand, I consider it to be 

a tribute to the thorough research 

and investigative work that has 

been done. On the other hand, the 

Sharjah Book Fair, where I was 

presented with this award, is one 

of the most active and respected 

cultural institutions in the Arab 

world,” said Obeid. He added 

that the award has made him even 

more determined to double his 

efforts for the benefit of the UAE 

and Arab culture as a whole. Dr. 

Fatima Hamad Al Mazrouei, a 

member of the Federal National 

Council and a renowned UAE 

writer and researcher, chose a 

unique theme for her “Monafarat 

in Pre-Islamic Literature” study. 

This deservedly won her the Best 

UAE Book in the field of Studies 

award at the Sharjah Book Fair. In 

the book’s introduction the author 

says that the aim of the study is to 

address Monafarat (prose quarrels) 

in pre-Islamic literature in order 

to understand them. It identifies 

their causes, origins, elements, 

components and their overall 

impact on pre-Islamic literature. 

She also discusses the actions of 

the participants of these quarrels 

- including elders, priests, poets 

and orators - and looks at what 

they actually did to resolve them, 

such as the way in which they 

were governed and arbitrated. This 

study demonstrates the values that 

Arabs are willing to fight for, and 

how some of the conflicts between 

individuals turned into conflicts 

between tribes, or degenerated 

into internal tribal disputes. It also 

looks at what was taking place in 

the markets and at the festivals, 

in terms of Monafarat. The study 

seeks to examine pieces and poems 

from Monafarat, while monitoring 

what has developed from the 

prose. It looks particularly at the 

priests’ rhymes, and what these 

tell us in terms of speech and 

proverbs. The study also covers the 

artistic characteristics of quarrel, 

and how it is demonstrated in its 

poetry and prose. “What prompted 

me to choose this subject was my 

conviction in the importance of 

Monafarat in the pre-Islamic era.

Program which includes

Pavilion (BSP) of SKMC, a 

comprehensive psychiatric 

facility committed to 

providing mental health 

treatment services in the 

UAE. The program consists 

of monthly public health talks 

about different topics related 

to mental health in Arabic 

language. The talks are given 

by a panel of mental health 

professionals, including 

psychiatrists, psychologists as 

well as social workers from 

the BSP. Each session includes 

a question and answer session 

to answer the attendees’ 

inquiries. 

The talk scheduled on 02 

November 2010 will address 

the essential aspects of raising 

children after divorce and how 

to socially adapt with the new 

change whether the couple has 

children or not. The talk will 

be given in Arabic language by 

Dr. Mufeed Raoof, Psychiatrist 

at the BSP in cooperation 

of Dr. Isis Badawi, Head of 

Psychology Department. 

After the presentation, the door 

will be open for the attendees’ 

questions and discussions in 

order to give them the chance 

to better understand and 

correct any miscomprehension 

or confusion. 

AL FARA’A INTEGRATED CONSTRUCTION GROUP 

DONATES A RECORD 251 PINTS OF BLOOD 

On Wednesday, 27 October 

2010, a new record was set 

where 251 pints of blood 

were collected in a record 

eight hours. The employees 

of Al Fara’a Integrated 

Construction Group joined 

forces with the Regional 

Blood Bank - Tawam 

Hospital in affiliation with 

John Hopkins Medicine, 

Al Ain to donate an 

approximately 32 pints of 

blood an hour. As each pint 

is divided into four units 

(red blood cells, fresh and 

frozen plasma, platelets and 

cryoprecipitate), so it is very 

possible that one donor helps 

more than one person. Mr 

Hamad Al Mulla, Technical 

and Administration Director 

of the Regional Blood Bank 

in Al Ain told the 400-strong 

crowd that a healthy adult 

could give blood 3-4 times 

a year. “The body restores 

the withdrawn blood within 

a short period and presents 

many health benefits 

including the reduction 

of iron and cholesterol.’

UAE Tour 6th November 


The changing diabetes world 

bus will begin its tour on 6th 

November from UAE under 

the patronage and support of 

the Ministry of Health. 

The drive will make a tour 

in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and 

Sharjah in coordination with 

NovoNordsk. 

Dr. Mahmood Fikri, Executive 

Director for Health Policies 

at the Ministry of Health and 

Chair of the Higher National 

Committee for Diabetes, said: 

“The first round will begin 

in the gulf region from the 

UAE to make about 7500 

early diabetes screening tests 

for 2500 cases in the three 

emirates”. 

Dr. Fikri explained that the 

main goal of the round is to 

raise the awareness of diabetes 

and its protection, enhance the 

role of the WHO in protecting 

the society from the disease, 

pointing out that the changing 

diabetes received 260.000 

visitors of which 127.000 

people made the early diabetes 

screening in 31 countries all 

over the globe. The tour also 

aims for making tests for 

diabetes complications such as 

eye diseases, glycerin levels, 

body mass and blood pressure. 

The tour achieved great results 

in raising the awareness of 

the society in early diabetes 

screening, pointing out that 

the tests are not done to 

reduce cardiovascular disease, 

improve your mood and help 

prevent dementia.

estimated 125 million

non-contagious disorder

“The Ministry of Health 

(MoH) is fully prepared to 

provide qualified staff, medical 

equipment and health services 

for all pilgrims during this 

year’s pilgrimage”, Acting 

Director-General Ministry of 

Health Dr Salem Al Darmaki 

said. The MoH has drawn up 

a clear strategy to raise the 

pilgrims’ awareness of reading 

the guidelines and instructions 

before their travel and during 

Hajj. The ministry has secured 

medical equipment, staff and 

medicines for the UAE centre 

for the Haj pilgrimage. 

The director-general gave this 

assurance following a meeting 

with the members of the 

pilgrims’ medical committee 

that took place at Al Owais 

auditorium at Al Baraha 

Hospital in Dubai. 

“Following the instructions 

of Dr Hanif Hassan, UAE 

Minister of Health, we

any dangers and that chronic 

disease patients have their 

required medications,” Dr 

Zarouni added.

Arabic Dishes …Lost between other Cuisines 

Lebanon our Egyptian food 

items in the name of Arabic 

dishes. The local families 

prefer eating food from 

different regions of the world 

as it builds their connection 

with them. But, while building 

this connection they are 

loosening their ties with their 

own culture. 

An Emarati woman and 

mother of a 9 year old girl 

says, “My daughter doesn’t 

even know names of our 

dishes, she knows what fast 

food stands are providing and 

even remember their prices.” 

This is saddening, as kids are 

the ones to take our culture 

and traditions and pass it on to 

the other generation and if they 

don’t know what our national 

dishes and food items are then 

how would this treasure of 

culture outshine among others. 

A restaurant waiter says, 

“Fast food and junk food is 

in demand these days, Arabic 

cuisine has lost somewhere 

in the demand of such food 

items. People would rather opt 

for something handy instead 

of the home food when they 

are out.” 

It’s true that while we are 

out of the house we want a 

change from the routine but 

what happens when we see a 

drastic change in eating habits 

at home. 2 minute noodles and 

ready to cook sachets have 

filled in the space and spices 

and herbs that were once part 

of our daily food items have 

no space in kitchen now. 

Although the problem cannot 

be deracinated completely but 

we can at least try our best to 

incorporate the essence of our 

culture in younger generations 

to ensure that what we got 

from our forefathers is in safe 

hands.

providing them a plat form

The objective of this 

association is to work on 

increasing the percentage

from 0.4% to an extent that 

matches the international 

standards.

in a meeting of representatives 

from the Arab sections of the 

International Board on Books 

for Young People (IBBY) held 

in keeping with the spirit of 

the Sharjah International Book 

Fair 2010 at the Expo Centre 

in Sharjah. 

The main focus of the 

meeting was the status of 

Arab children’s culture and 

cooperation between Arab
