Foreword Zayed University shall become the leading university in the region. Zayed University is destined for a leadership role in the Middle East and beyond. Destined to Lead is the University’s statement of readiness to move forward to the “next level” as it continues to strengthen its leadership capacity. It presents a bold but achievable action plan that will enable it to fulfill the vision of becoming the leading university in the region. That leadership role will not fully materialize, however, without the considerable growth and development of academic programs, successful recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty members, a markedly expanded program of research, and greater service to the United Arab Emirates through outreach and engagement. With the implementation of this action plan, Zayed University will lead higher education in the region to new levels of service, academic achievement, and meaningful research. The significance of the University’s becoming the leading university in the region emanates from its commitment to serve its students and the U.A.E., not from a desire to gain celebrity for itself. Other universities will model programs, policies, and practices on those of ZU and will seek to partner with it. The University will be recognized by citizens, communities, governments, business, and industry for its academic excellence, student achievements, and institutional leadership. The University will be rewarded by the knowledge that it is preparing and serving the future leaders of this dynamic young nation. The United Arab Emirates, already a leader in the Middle East, is rapidly becoming an international leader because of its developing institutions, expanding economy, cultural attractions, natural resources, and beauty. Yet another requirement for international leadership is a great university. History shows that the great cities of leading nations have had great universities. Educating future leaders in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Zayed University is destined to be that great national university. 4
Inspired by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan, founder of the U.A.E., the actions described in this document will take Zayed University to the “next level” on its path to greatness and leadership. Its actions will provide a solid foundation for service to the community and nation, will constitute a mandate for academic leadership, will assure high quality, and will be innovative in the uses of technology. Zayed University has accomplished an outstanding and enviable record of achievement under the leadership of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, President of Zayed University and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It is now time to follow His Excellency’s directive to take Zayed University to the “next level” of achievement. Our university community believes Zayed University is destined to lead.
