Patrick J Shearer Foreword
On the health aspect, a fit mind is an essential
requirement for police officers and staff, thus I
genuinely believe that general fitness is a key part of
this. As Police Managers, we are frequently challenged
to consider not only our own work life balance, but that
of those who work with and support us
In many cases good working arrangements are in place
where there is a balance of commitment by Forces and
the individuals themselves, and this is important to
ensure we can all have the opportunity to give our best,
especially where we are representing at Force or
national level. Equally I am conscious however that
this area is coming under significantly increasing
pressure and the personal commitment
Importantly, PSUK continues to develop with a healthy
range of sporting sections reflecting the diversity across
the service. As Honorary Treasurer I also recognise and
welcome the discipline which sporting sections are
demonstrating in their approach to financial
management looking at ways of reducing and where
possible sharing costs.
3
QM Police Sport UK
The Police Service across the UK is no
stranger to change and being very much a
‘Can Do’ service, this will inevitably place a
significant strain on many of our people.
We only have to consider the impact of recent and ongoing
austerity measures to understand the anxiety of many of our
staff about their future employment status and how the police
service will look as it moves forward within the current change
climate. The impact of politics and financial constraint has
never been greater.
In times of challenge and austerity, diversions; especially
sporting and team interaction, which encourages competition,
COMARADERIE and achievement, are essential to maintain
sharpness, enthusiasm and healthy personal development.
Competition and achievement develop us as individuals, set
out who we are and aid ourselves and those around us to
reflect the qualities of fairness, drive and determination.
Securing sponsorship is just one way of allaying some of
the heavy costs, and whilst the management team have
achieved significant success in this area over the last few
years we are committed to having a fresh look to
establish if we can lever in even more support.
PSUK continues to have a strong, enthusiastic and
successful membership and I look forward to working
with you all to grow that success.
Yours sincerely
Cross country
PSUK athletes took the plaudits with some fine
performances in the annual cross country
representative fixture at RAF Halton in
Buckinghamshire. This year's race included the
Southern Services Cross Country League
fixture and took place on a course that took in
playing fields and woods, but only included
one steady climb each lap instead of the usual
three!.
The course was the same as in previous years, taking in playing
fields and trails through the woods, but only included one
steady climb each lap instead of the usual three!! Conditions,
although cool, were ideal for running. The going under foot
was reasonably firm for the time of year. The women’s race
was run over one and a half laps of about 6kms and the men’s
race over two and a half laps at 10kms.
In the women’s race, PSUK’s Sarah Hill (Hampshire), Natalie
Farrow (Lincolnshire), Christine Howard (Derbyshire) and Kate
Towerton (Hampshire) led the field on the half lap closely
followed by the RAF’s Tamsyn Rutter and Civil Service’s K
Beecher. By the end of the half lap and commencing the full
lap Hill and Farrow had taken control of the race and had
established a good 15 – 20 metres lead on the chasing group.
Hill and Farrow were never challenged from this point
onwards. With approximately 600m to go, Hill appeared to
have control of the race having gained a 10 metre lead on
Farrow. However, Farrow didn’t give in, and on the home
straight to the finish, pulled Hill to win the race in 21:49 with
Hill in Second place just one second behind. Rutter led the
RAF home in 3rd place just 10 seconds behind Hill.
Farrow and Hill were well supported by Howard in 5th (23:05),
Towerton in 6th (23:16), Kelly Morgan (South Wales) in 8th
victory by 18 points (14 points) from the host team RAF with
32 points.
In the men’s race, PSUK’s Gary Blackman (West Midlands), Ben
Gamble (Staffordshire) and Steve Cairns (Lothian & Borders)
led the field at the end of the half lap and commencing the
first of two full laps chased by members of the RAF team, Civil
Service team and PSUK’s Paul Cardy (Hampshire) and Rob
Grantham (Cheshire). Similar to the women’s race, Blackman
and Gamble took control of the race and were never
challenged from this point onwards. Blackman got the better
of Gamble, winning the race in 32:10 with Gamble in second
place, just 12 seconds behind. Mike Cummings (Civil Service)
took third place in a time of 32:43.
Blackman and Gamble were well supported by Cairns (V) in
5th (33:05), Cardy in 9th (33:27), Grantham in 12th (33:48),
Malcolm Fowler (V) (Cheshire) in 15th (34:35), Ian Phillips
(Derbyshire) in 16th (34:40), Justin Maxwell (PSNI) in 22nd
Webster (V) (Derbyshire) completing the Police team in 61st
(41:29).
PSUK regained the team title by four points from the host
team with 44 points to the RAF’s 48 points, with the Civil
Service third with 97 points and the Fire Service fourth with
214 points.
Police Sport UK v Fire Service
v Prison Service
Stretton-On-The-Fosse, Warwickshire
Friday 25th November 2011
This annual fixture was hosted by the Prison Service at the
Training College, Newbold Revell, Stretton-on-the-Fosse, near
Rugby on Friday 25th November 2011.
The course was within the college grounds taking in playing
fields, paths and the fields immediately adjoining. The weather
on the day was dry, however five minutes before the start of
the races, it clouded over and started to rain and didn’t stop
until the races had finished. The competitors also had to
contend with a bitingly cold wind which was blowing across
the course.
All three races – ladies, senior men & veterans, races started
at 2pm with the ladies running one lap of the 5.1km course
and the gents completing two laps of the same course.
In the women’s race Natalie Farrow (Lincolnshire) took control
from the start. She was chased by Helen Cross (Prison), Ruth
Watchorne-Rice (Fire), Kate Towerton (Hampshire), Wendy
King (Essex) and Kate Kelly (GMP) all three who were making
their first appearance for PSUK. Farrow led throughout the
race, winning comfortably in a time of 20mins 31secs. Cross
finished second, 46 seconds behind Farrow. Farrow was well
supported by Towerton in 3rd, King in 4th and Kelly
completing the team in 6th place. The Police Sport UK team
was unchallenged, winning convincingly to take the Paul
Murphy Trophy.
In the men’s race Martin Williams (West Midlands) took
control from the start, chased by Jim Cooper (Metropolitan),
Nigel Stirk (Fire), John Franklin (Metropolitan) and Gary
Blackman (West Midlands), both making their debut for PSUK.
By the end of the first lap Williams had pulled away from the
est of the field and was never challenged coming home 1st
in a time of 35mins 40secs. Cooper ran strongly to finish 2nd,
with Franklin finishing in 3rd to make it a clean sweep for the
PSUK team. These three were well supported with Paul Cardy
(Hampshire) finishing in 5th, Blackman limped home in 6th –
having ‘tweaked’ a calf muscle 500metres from the finish, Ian
Phillips (Derbyshire) in 7th and Malcolm Fowler (Cheshire)
completing the men’s team in 13th place overall and 2nd
veteran. The men reclaimed the team trophy from the Fire
Service who had won it last year.
The Veteran’s race also saw the PSUK team win convincingly,
with Fowler leading the team home in 2nd place (13th overall)
supported by Ian Weatherall (Cheshire) in 3rd (15th overall),
Darren Riley (West Midlands) in 4th (24th overall) and Rick
Lloyd (GMP), making his debut for PSUK, completing the team
in 5th place (26th overall).
The Games are the third largest international multi-sport event
The WPFG is a biennial sports event organised for serving and
retired police, prison, fire and uniformed customs and border
agency staff. Their aim is to promote physical fitness and
camaraderie within the services around the world.
The first Games took place in San Jose in 1985 and they
became international in 1989 when they were held outside
USA for the first time in Vancouver. Stockholm was the first
European country to host the Games in 1999. The record for
the highest number of sporting entries was in 2011, when
over 18,000 competitors took part in the event in New York.
The countdown to the 2013 Games began in earnest with the
Police teams from 16 countries attended, all based at the
Hotel Torre Normanna, located some 25 kilometers from the
City of Palermo, where the championships were held at the
modern Palaoreto Sports Centre.
It was acknowledged that the standard of police Table Tennis
in Europe is extremely high, with players from France, Sweden
and Ukraine to the fore, all using established programmes for
training and participation.
The competition included Men's & Women's Team, Mixed
Doubles, Doubles, & Singles events, with the format in each
based on initial round-robin, with qualifiers moving into the
knock-out phases.
On the first day, the opening ceremony took place, with all
teams gathering in the city centre, before marching off with
National flags flying and flanked by members of the Municipal
Police Service. After 750 metres and reaching the Civic
Government building, the parade was greeted by senior
dignitaries from USPE and Palermo, including the National
police choir who provided a musical interlude, including two,
vibrant and stirring renditions of Italy's National Anthem.
After the conclusion of these formalities, the championships
began with the Team events, where at the end of play, GB's
Women's team secured the bronze medal, France taking gold
and Austria silver. GB's Men's team reached the quarter-finals
before bowing out, as Sweden took gold and France silver.
Over the following two days, the Women's/Men's
doubles/singles events took place, despite GB team players
progressing through the round-robin stages and into the
quarter-finals of all other events, the respective draws left GB
players with the misfortune of playing either top or second
seeds and all further interest in the championships
subsequently ended.
During the closing ceremony on Thursday evening, GB
Women's team made the podium and received a team trophy,
plus individual medals for their third place in the team event.
Overall, Sweden took gold in the Men's singles, doubles,
mixed doubles & Team events, whilst France secured gold,
silver & bronze in the Women's singles.
At the conclusion and during the journey home, it was agreed
that the whole event was a great experience, whilst more GB
success on the table would have been nice, the team spirit
and camaraderie was excellent, as were the renowned
landscape views of Sicily, together with the weather, whilst
the driving experiences between hotel to venue and return
each day was at best unforgettable….
The next championships will take place in 2015 with a venue
to be decided.
The PSUK Ladies Hockey Squad
THE PSUK ladies hockey team meets up for
two weekends a year for a training session
and a couple of matches.
This year the team played two games and produced two good
victories against teams representing the Army and the RAF in
games played at Aldershot.
The police squad saw officers from all over the country,
including Northern Ireland, take part for the squad coached by
Cleaven Faulkner of Hampshire.
Police 1 Army 5
Over the last weekend of October the British police national
ladies hockey team played two fixtures against military
opposition at the army, school of hockey, Aldershot,
Hampshire. The poIice squad saw officers from all over the
country including Northern Ireland converge on the Aldershot
area to come together for a training session on the Friday to
then find themselves head long into a fixture against the army.
The fixture on the Saturday morning was always going to be
tough but in the end provided focus and comparison against
two squads who had clearly prepared in different ways.
It was apparent from the start that the police side were far
better organised and had taken the time to work out simple
and effective tactics for the fixture. This was demonstrated
within the first minute when the police took the lead with
Surrey's Henderson converting from a slipped pass by Main
(Leicestershire). The police dominated the early stages of the
fixture leaving the army no opportunities to settle or in anyway
threaten the police 25. The pressure on the army mounted
after 11 minutes when a great move down the left saw a
12
resultant short corner converted from Panter (Merseyside).
The interval came with the police side not really capitalising on
their chances and keen to ensure the pressure continued into
the second period. Coach Cleaven Faulkner (Hampshire)
clarified some tactical changes that were to allow for greater
movement of the ball in closer triangles, to work the ball
around the opposition and maintain longer possession. The
tactic paid dividends when in relatively quick session the police
side were four up with goals from Main and Panter.
The police side were now cruising and were directed to work
opportunities that the lead catered for. The coach was able to
take the opportunity to look at players in differing positions
and try other short corner options. One such corner saw the
fifth goal converted by Lucy Robinson as the game closed into
the last ten minutes. A slight lapse in the defence did see an
army consolation goal but the game was already over.
"A very good performance from a side who had just been
together for 24 hours. This fixture allowed me to see some
strengths and weaknesses but overall I am very pleased with
the result and more importantly the bonding the squad have
demonstrated both on and off the field."
Coach report - Cleaven Faulkner
Police 6 RAF 1
The British Police Ladies Hockey team got off to a promising
start with a good individual goal from Mitchell (Lothian and
Borders) after just 3 minutes. However this was going to be a
tough match as the RAF were strong opponents and quick on
the break which allowed them to create some chances of their
own. British Police held them out in the early stages and went
on to consolidate their lead with another goal early in the first
half. Good work by Main (Leicestershire) down the right who
brilliantly found Henderson (Surrey) on the penalty spot and
she produced a top quality finish. The police began to
dominate the match with plenty of controlled passing. This
controlled play applying more and more pressure on the hard
Working RAF team who conceded a short corner. From this
corner the police scored again from another short corner with
another excellent finish from Faulkner who scored her second
of the game to make it 4-0 to the Police at half time.
Both teams battled it out throughout the remainder of the
first half with the RAF looking dangerous on the counter
attack but it was the police and their sustained pressure on
the RAF defence that were to score again from another short
corner. The short corner routine was broken down by the
belligerent RAF Faulkner (Hampshire) at the top of the D and
she struck her second goal of the match. Halftime score 4-0
to the police.
The second half started off brightly for the RAF and they won
a short corner early on which they scored from. The second
half was more of an even contest as neither team was able to
create clear chances and score until the 18th minute when yet
more good work by Main (Leicestershire) down the right
produced an inviting cross which Fawcett (Hampshire) didn’t
hesitate to finish off slotting the ball past the helpless RAF
keeper. The police sixth and final goal came in the last couple
of minutes from the left with strong work by McKernan who
played the ball across the RAF goal and Bemowski (West
Midlands) scrambled it in.
The Police ran out 6-1 winners but this score doesn't reflect
the RAF's efforts as they were strong competition and were
only well beaten by a strong and composed Police
performance whose defence were resolute at the back and
knew they were in a match.
THE PSUK Ladies basketball team prepared for the
2nd USPE Championships in Dublin with a warm
up game against the Dutch Police at Hendon Police
Training Centre. After an incredible shaky start,
not least influenced by the sight of a 6’6’’ Dutch
player, PSUK produced a confidence boosting 30-
15 win in a game that owed much to the
organisation of Sarah King.
With final preparations complete, kit supplied and Euros
purchased, PSUK Ladies travelled to Dublin to compete in the
championships, alongside teams from Ireland, France, Greece
and the Netherlands.
The opening ceremony took place at the Dublin City University
Campus. All the teams paraded with a uniformed flag bearer
with the PSUK being represented by Sasha McCarthy.
PSUK’s first game was against France, the side they previously
beat to secure the bronze in the last championships. PSUK
made a slow start to the competition and where completely
overwhelmed by the much improved and well-drilled French
unit who quickly took the initiative and led 40-16 at half time.
It was a lead the French never relinquished as the PSUK side
were beaten 76-29 in a disappointing opening game.
The PSUK side recovered well for the next fixture against the
Netherlands. The first half was tight with PSUK leading 23-22
but the second half saw them extend their advantage with
some excellent play to win the game 50-35.
The third fixture against reigning champions Greece proved
to be the PSUK’s best team performance. Against a very
strong team PSUK remained positive and never buckled under
the pressure with the Greeks leading by just 12 points at half
time. Playing hard to the end PSUK struggled to breach the
deficit and lost 64-47 but could be proud of their excellent,
uplifting performance.
The PSUK’s final pool match was against the hosts Ireland,
who filled the hall with in excess of 100 schoolchildren. The
atmosphere and crowd support was incredible and inspired
the Irish to a 78-46 win.
This left the PSUK with a semi finals rematch against France
with Greece playing Ireland.
France had finished top after the pool stages and although
the PSUK side tried a number of offensive and defensive
options in an attempt to counter the French they were out
played, finishing 64 -38 behind, encouragingly an
improvement on their previous encounter.
2nd USPE. LADIES BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
DUBLIN - OCT 2011
The remaining fixture between Greece and Ireland was an
exciting game with the lead changing hands and a truly gritty
performance seeing Ireland win 60 – 58.
PSUK then played the Greeks for 3rd/4th place spot but went
down 81-35 to finish in fourth place.
The final was a true showcase, and a fitting end to the
tournament, with Ireland showing true determination and
passion to clinch the title 77 – 71.
Final placing; 1st Ireland, 2nd France, 3rd Greece, 4th PSUK,
5th Netherlands.
Congratulations to Vanessa Calafat who was named as one of
the All Star 5.
Julie Skidmore, Team Manager, said: “Whilst the results were
disappointing, PSUK remained focused and professional
throughout the tournament and can be very proud of their
achievements. This was a learning curve and this new and
developing squad will learn from this experience. ‘’
British Fire Service 24 British Police 32
THE Police Sport UK rugby league team kicked off
2012 with an excellent victory over their Fire
Service counterparts at Siddal, the home of one of
the sport’s legendary amateur clubs.
The Police side was the first on the scoresheet when Mann, not
for the last time in the game, used his deceptive footwork to
break two tackles. The ball was moved to Southwell who drove
into the twenty taking three defenders with him, before
offloading to Cowling who drew the full-back and put the ever
present Hughes under the sticks. The extra two points were
added by Newton.
The early pressure and dominance was maintained by the Police
and on the back of strong drives and good lines by Rotherham,
Eastham and Heeley the attack was taken to their opponent's
line. A clever dummy inside by Hughes saw Clemie collect the
ball on a fine blind side arc to cross the line in the left corner for
an unconverted try to make it 10-0.
The British Fire Service began to find their feet with several
promising attacks down their left side prompted by the lively
scrum half but these were repeatedly thwarted by the efforts of
Dixon, Murphy and Taylor until the half hour mark when the Fire
Service hit back with a converted try from their scrum half,
shortly followed by two tries out wide by each winger. The
conversions were missed, but suddenly the Police were 14-10
down at the break.
During the half time talk Head Coach, Robinson, asked for
improvement in discipline, staying on the ball and set
completions and he got his wish with the police side on the
attack for the early stages of the half. Unfortunately it was from
such an attack deep in the twenty that saw a stray pass from
Newton swept up by the rival number 4 to race away and score
under the posts. The conversion was added as the Police went
20-10 down.
The Police side reduced the arrears to four points when
Woodhead scored a try after good work from Southwell.
Newton tagged on the extras to make it 20-16.
Back came the Fire Service to register another converted score to
go 24-16 ahead but once again the police side hit back with
Clemie feeding Eastham for a try wide out. With Newton
momentarily off the pitch, the conversion was missed.
Whilst the Police were keeping theirs, the Fire Service were losing
their discipline and with the likes of Huck dancing his way past
defenders, Williams, Rowland and Higgins probing and inviting
the forwards into the gaps, it wasn't long before Woodhead was
once more too big and too powerful, to score a mirror image of
his first try. Williams knocked over the two to go 26-24 ahead.
The game was now on a knife edge going in to the last ten, but
veteran Chappell calmed the nerves, defying his 43 years to carry
the ball over the line. Newton converted, the whistle went and
the Police were 24-32 winners.
Although not everything was perfect, this was a good, hard hit
out for the British Police to take into their Challenge Cup tie in
Cumbria against Millom.
