Patrick J Shearer Foreword
On the health aspect, a fit mind is an essential
requirement for police officers and staff, thus I
genuinely believe that general fitness is a key part of
this. As Police Managers, we are frequently challenged
to consider not only our own work life balance, but that
of those who work with and support us
In many cases good working arrangements are in place
where there is a balance of commitment by Forces and
the individuals themselves, and this is important to
ensure we can all have the opportunity to give our best,
especially where we are representing at Force or
national level. Equally I am conscious however that
this area is coming under significantly increasing
pressure and the personal commitment
Importantly, PSUK continues to develop with a healthy
range of sporting sections reflecting the diversity across
the service. As Honorary Treasurer I also recognise and
welcome the discipline which sporting sections are
demonstrating in their approach to financial
management looking at ways of reducing and where
possible sharing costs.

QM Police Sport UK
The Police Service across the UK is no
stranger to change and being very much a
‘Can Do’ service, this will inevitably place a
significant strain on many of our people.
We only have to consider the impact of recent and ongoing
austerity measures to understand the anxiety of many of our
staff about their future employment status and how the police
service will look as it moves forward within the current change
climate. The impact of politics and financial constraint has
never been greater.
In times of challenge and austerity, diversions; especially
sporting and team interaction, which encourages competition,
COMARADERIE and achievement, are essential to maintain
sharpness, enthusiasm and healthy personal development.
Competition and achievement develop us as individuals, set
out who we are and aid ourselves and those around us to
reflect the qualities of fairness, drive and determination.
Securing sponsorship is just one way of allaying some of
the heavy costs, and whilst the management team have
achieved significant success in this area over the last few
years we are committed to having a fresh look to
establish if we can lever in even more support.
PSUK continues to have a strong, enthusiastic and
successful membership and I look forward to working
with you all to grow that success.
