Conveying an unwritten message with flowers was prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries and came to be known as “the language of flowers.” Iridos is the Greek word for iris. Iris is a sweet-smelling flower and was the symbol of the mythological character Iridos, the messenger of the ancient Greek gods. Iridos was the goddess of the rainbow, winging a message across the sky; in the Iliad, she was the swift-footed messenger of Zeus and Hera. Iridos was selected to carry BRIT’s message. Mission: To conserve our natural heritage by deepening our knowledge of the plant world and achieving public understanding of the value plants bring to life. ©2007 Botanical Research Institure of Texas PUBLICATIONS Barney Lipscomb, Head judy MacKenzie Patrons, In my eight years at BRIT I’ve seen many changes, but none so dramatic as witnessed in the last year or more. Staff has grown as have our goals and aspirations. Our anticipation also grows as the dream of a permanent home comes closer to reality. Never have I been a part of an organization so dedicated to, and ready for, such a demanding change. We all see BRIT’s new home as the springboard that will propel our ability to meet the demanding challenges of this advancing century. Once again, I hope this issue of Iridos gives an interesting and informative account of the last several months and a glimpse of what lies ahead. Robert George, Editor BRIT Spotlight Erratum: We express our most sincere apology for incorrectly referring to Shinners Society member Marci Mercado as Mercedes Mercado in the last Iridos: Volume 8, Number One, page 16. We regret the error. Executive Administrative Assistant and Head of Human Resources judy Secrest joined the BRIT staff about three years ago. She arrived by way of Austin, Texas, but has family in the Dallas/Fort Worth area—something that’s very important to her. Her position, though often underestimated, is crucial to the smooth operation of the entire organization. Also, as Head of Human Resources she is an energetic advocate for all the BRIT staff. Outside of BRIT she is active in her church and enjoys hiking and camping (see related story on page 14). Engineering and aesthetic triumphs abound in the plant world—in the towering trees of a forest and in the delicate curves of a lady’s-slipper orchid. Humans created architecture at its best to provide profound beauty while showing Homo sapiens’ dominance over the forces of nature. Has the pendulum of subduing nature perhaps swung to the extreme?
