A Message from the President
Roger Bache
The mission of the OI Foundation is to improve the quality of life for people with OI through
education, mutual support, awareness and funding research to find treatments and a cure. All
activities of the Foundation are based upon these four mission areas and the OIF board and staff
remain committed to achieving our mission and goals.
I am pleased to report that the OIF made progress in a number of key areas in 2009. Despite a
difficult economic situation, our foundation continued to thrive based on the hard work of our OIF
staff and the grassroots fundraising activities within our community. In this annual report, you will
read about the progress we have made and many of the activities that impacted the OI community
this past year.
Of significance, we selected three additional Linked Clinical Research Centers (LCRCs) to
coordinate and enhance care to people with OI. The three new sites are: Shriner’s Hospital in
Montreal, Shriner’s Hospital in Chicago and the the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute
of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), division of Intramural Research, in Bethesda,
MD. We now have six LCRCs and we are convinced that this initiative will significantly improve
information exchange and medical care for those with OI. The LCRCs continues to be one our top
priorities.
In 2009 the OIF funded three seed grants, three 2 nd -year Michael Geisman Research Fellowships,
3 new LCRC grants and three 2 nd -year LCRC grants. The Foundation also funded grants for the OI
Registry and the annual OI Science meeting held in Chicago. As you may have noticed, our OIF
web portal is better than ever and it is being visited by more people than ever. In fact, we have
seen a decrease in telephone requests at our OIF office as more people rely on our web site to
obtain information. We are very grateful to the Buchbinder family for their generous support in
funding our annual science meetings and to the Bergman family for making possible our web portal
upgrades.
In the news you may have read about fellow board member Anna Curry’s successful climb of Mt
Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness for OI. As an organization we are successful because of
the enthusiasm and dedication of so many people like Anna. Year after year, dedicated volunteers
conduct golf tournaments, dinners, fun walks, and other events that provide the necessary funding
to sustain and grow the OI Foundation. We are also very thankful for the generosity of so many
people who continue to make generous donations to fund research and other key initiatives. On
behalf of the OIF board of directors and OIF staff, I want to thank you for all of your hard work and
continued support.
In closing, we are looking forward to 2010. We are excited about the new “Impact Grant” program
made possible by the superb fundraising efforts of the Children’s Brittle Bone Foundation (CBBF).
This new program will provide needed assistance to many in the OI Community. We are also excited
about our 2010 national conference in Portland, Oregon this July. We have an outstanding agenda
and a number of wonderful speakers planned for this year’s conference. We hope to see you all In
Portland!

Science & Research
10 th International Conference on OI Held in Belgium
OI Foundation CEO Tracy Hart attended and represented the OI Foundation at the 10 th International Conference on
Osteogenesis Imperfecta in Ghent, Belgium in October, 2008. The meeting brought together scientists, researchers and
physicians from all over the world to discuss the current progress in diagnosis and treatment of OI. Besides reviewing
important clinical and radiographic aspects of OI, an update on the genetic and molecular aspects of OI was presented
and current view points on management and treatment of OI were discussed.

150 people including 20 American physicians
and scientists, created a forum where a
wide range of medical specialties including
orthopedics, rehabilitation, rheumatology,
endocrinology, ear-nose-throat, pediatrics,
genetics and molecular biology could interact
and talk about their current research and
programs relative to improving the lives of
people living with OI. Participants included OI
Foundation medical advisors Peter Byers, M.D.,
Francis Glorieux, O.C., M.D., Ph.D., Brendan
Lee, M.D., Ph.D., Joan Marini, M.D., Ph.D.,
Jay Shapiro, M.D., V. Reid Sutton, M.D., and
Matthew Warman, M.D. Also in attendance was
parent and neonatologist Bonnie Landrum, M.D.
Delegates to the 10th International Conference on OI in Belgium
The meeting clearly showed how important communication is across the globe in finding new treatments for OI and
how important it will be in the future to continue to bring the experts from around the world together to report on
their valuable and cutting edge research.
In addition to the scientific portion of the meeting, the OIFE (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation Europe) held its
family meeting in a town close to Ghent, enabling those attending the scientific meeting to attend portions of the
family meeting and the welcome reception. OIFE delegates from all over Europe came together to discuss ways to
make their organizations stronger and how to advocate for people with OI all over the world. The OI Foundation is a
member and supporter of the OIFE.
The OI Foundation Announces Three New Linked Clinical Research Centers
The OI Foundation announced Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago, IL, Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal,
Quebec, and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), division
of Intramural Research, in Bethesda, MD, as its newest Linked Clinical Research Centers (LCRC.) A joint initiative from
the OI Foundation and the Children’s Brittle Bone Foundation, the Linked Clinical Research Centers are a nationwide
network designed to provide the highest-quality of standardized medical care for people living with osteogenesis
imperfecta (OI), a rare genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily.
In addition to providing high-quality standardized care, the LCRCs, through a coordinated effort, will aim to advance
standards of care and improve treatment through clinical research. By sharing data, the Centers will be capable of
tracking how OI changes across a lifetime, what complications are common, and which treatments are beneficial.
The OI Foundation and Children’s Brittle Bones Foundation launched the LCRC program in early 2008 with three pioneer
centers; Baylor Medical Center/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX, Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD,
and Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.

Record Attendance Numbers at the 2008 National Conference
The 2008 National Conference on OI was the largest in Foundation history with more than 800 attendees. Conference
attendees chose from over 35 informational sessions led by some of the top OI researchers and clinicians in the world.
Some of the more popular session topics included “Aging with OI,” “Ask the Doctor: Adults with Type III and IV OI,” and
“Adaptive Equipment.” Attendees were also able to schedule medical consultations the day before Conference. More
than 85 appointments were made with specialists from across the country.
In addition to the abundance of informational sessions, the 2008 Conference boasted overwhelmingly popular social
activities. The Talent Show drew rave reviews from a crowd of over 200! The Kids Game Night, Adults Dance, and
Awards Dinner & Dance were other well-attended social events.
The success of the 2008 National Conference on OI re-affirmed the
importance of the event. There is no other place where families
and individuals with OI can come together for support, education,
and fun. Ten-time Conference attendee, Ann Marie Geiger, says.
“Nowhere else can I go and have a doctor answer a question
from his personal experience and not from trying to remember
the one case of OI he saw back in medical school 30 years ago.
Nowhere else can I go and share my stories and my life and get
understanding, not pity or abandonment. Nowhere else can I go
and laugh at the ridiculous ways to break something!”
The focus is now moving forward to the 2010 National Conference
on OI, which will be held July 8-10 in Portland, Oregon.

Remembering Dick Geisman
The National Conference on OI from August 1-3, 2008
provided an opportunity for people in the OI community
to build friendships, share experiences, and exchange
tips for daily living with each other.
The OI Foundation is sad to report that a dear friend, Richard “Dick”
Geisman, passed away on September 30, 2008 after a long and courageous
battle against pulmonary fibrosis.
When Dick and Gemma Geisman’s son, Mike, was born with OI in 1956,
Dick was determined that his fragile little boy’s life would be as normal
as possible. Dick designed and constructed special chairs, beds, and a
shower that Mike could use, and carried Mike everywhere the family went,
including up the steep steps to the upper deck of Riverfront Stadium to
watch baseball games.
There was little or no information available to families when Mike was diagnosed with OI. Gemma’s two articles
published in Redbook magazine in 1968 and 1970 became the building blocks of the OI Foundation. As OI families
throughout the country responded to the articles requesting information and support, Dick and Gemma went into
action. By 1970, Gemma had co-founded the OI Foundation. Dick served as the Foundation’s greatest cheerleader and
provided the necessary support at home as Gemma worked to guide the development of the Foundation. During his
retirement, Dick enjoyed attending the OI Foundation conferences; providing encouragement and support to the young
individuals with OI.
As we say goodbye to Dick with tears in our eyes and sorrow in our hearts, we also recognize and celebrate the
contribution of our founding families who have always been the greatest cheerleaders for the OI Foundation.

Why Join a Support Group?
Help + Opinions + Personal Growth + Education = HOPE
“With our group someone always has an answer for our question or problem.”
“We are so thankful that we have a place to come and share our story, listen to
others, and see adults who are successful with OI.”
Whether attending a semi-pro baseball game, walking with the kids through a zoo or Exploratorium, listening to
an educational presentation about living with OI, or simply throwing burgers on the grill, the OI community comes
together offering support, encouragement and friendship.
Seventeen events were held from July 2008 through June 2009 with activities ranging from casual summer picnics, to
holiday parties, to presentations about service dogs, water therapy and other information related to living with OI.
During the fiscal year ending June 30, new support groups were formed in Louisiana and North Carolina.
Since July, six additional groups have formed, bringing the total number nationwide to 32. The newest groups are
located in Arizona, New Mexico, Southern Florida, Connecticut, Long Island, NY, and Montana.

OI Foundation Advocacy Update
The OI Foundation and its grassroots advocates made significant progress in 2008 and early in 2009 toward
implementing an effective long-term federal advocacy program. The goals of this program include:

Educate Capitol Hill staff on osteogenesis imperfecta, the needs of people living with OI and the ways
legislators can support the work of the OI Foundation
Establish the OI Foundation as an influential health policy voice on Capitol Hill
Secure federal funding for the OIF’s Linked Clinical Research Center project and other bone-health related
legislation
Maintain an energized national grassroots network.
Working toward these goals, a very successful Advocacy Day was held during the 2008 National Conference on OI. More
than 40 volunteers made over 25 visits to legislators from their home states. In addition, an Advocacy Page was added
to Foundation’s website (under the How to Help tab). It is dedicated to sharing information on public policy matters
important to people with OI. The OI Foundation is pleased to announce that it will be working with Kyle Mulroy and his
team at Washington Strategic Consulting on these and other priorities in the year ahead. Kyle is an experienced and
effective lobbyist as well as a member of the OI community.
The OI Foundation continues to be an active partner with other organizations
that are working toward similar goals, including the Bone Coalition. This
well-respected group includes leading national bone disease organizations
representing thousands of people, research scientists, physicians and
surgeons from around the country. The Bone Coalition currently is strongly
supporting legislation titled The Bone Health Promotion and Research Act
of 2009. This legislation introduced by Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV) and Rep.
Michael Burgess (R-TX) provides for a comprehensive national bone health
strategy including expanding and intensifying research in bone disease.
Next Steps
OI Foundation grassroots volunteers will be called upon to help seek cosponsors
for this important legislation, The Bone Health Promotion and
Research Act of 2009. More information will be posted on the Advocacy web
page as it becomes available. Instructions for contacting your federal
legislators will be posted on the Advocacy Page. As information about federal
health care reform proposals becomes available, it will be vital for people
living with rare disorders to make their voices heard.

OI Family Featured on ABC’s Hit Show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
The Grys family of Pekin, IL, was featured on the January 11, 2009 edition of the prime time TV program, Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition. One of their children, 8-year-old Jake, has OI Type III and is not able to walk.
The Grys family was selected for the show after three years of petitioning the show’s producers and support that came
from the many people familiar with Jake and the work of his adoptive parents, Steve and Jeannie. The show featured
the family’s new 4,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom house designed to ensure access and independence for Jake.
Jean Grys wrote the following about the family’s experience when they saw their new home for the first time:
“We arrived at the set. It is a real TV show with cameras, directors, actors, designers and people watching
the filming. We had just adjusted to life at Disney; being led around by the hand by our hero, Matthew. Now
we were in a new world. When that bus moved, our lives would be forever altered. When we climbed out of
the limo, thousands of people were screaming our name. Everyone we knew and everyone else in the world
it seemed: a sea of smiling faces, yelling our names. So surreal! Then they started chanting “Move that bus.”
When they finally did move the bus, we were stunned. The house was beautiful! How did they know what
colors and styles we liked? But wait, there is more.”
“We entered the house and it was beautiful. It looked like a big clean beach condo! The consensus was
AWESOME!!! Everyone got to run and look at their bedrooms, but what we all wanted to see was Jake’s room.
We couldn’t wait. THIS was what it was all about. And we have to say that ABC and the designers hit a home
run! Touring our wonderful new home, checking out the special features in Jake’s room, bathroom and therapy
pool we still felt like we were on vacation.”
