There’s Always a Way 

Before the first child came through the doors of the 

new “Crippled Children’s Hospital & School” on March 3, 

1952,Dr. E.B. “Jon”Morrison was there,working to make 

it a welcoming place for youngsters affected by polio. 

As we prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of 

Children’s Care Hospital & School (our name since 

1994) in 2012, Morrison, 92, offers an invaluable 

look at how the organization began and has evolved. 

When Children’s Care was built on Sioux Falls’ outskirts, it 

was reachable only by a gravel road. The building, surrounded 

by cornfields, had room for 32 boarding students and 25 to 30 

day students. 

South Dakota parents whose children had been left in 

wheelchairs or with leg braces by polio had been asking for 

help for their children. But when Children’s Care first opened 

its doors, only seven youngsters were enrolled. 

“We learned a very big lesson there,” Morrison says. 

“Parents, as much as they needed care for their child, were 

reluctant to have their child cared for outside of their 

homes.” 

Morrison set out to educate state residents about the 

purpose of the organization. It wasn’t a place to hide away a 

child, but instead, it would offer children a place to achieve 

their full potential. 

Children’s Care began adapting to its students’ needs 

immediately. The original plan was to follow the public school 

curriculum, but after a three-month summer vacation, 

students came back with broken wheelchairs and braces and 

lagging in their studies. Morrison realized that shorter, more 

frequent breaks would be better for the students. 

He also understood that children with polio weren’t the 

only ones who would thrive in the nurturing environment he 

and others at Children’s Care had created. 

Morrison enrolled students with cerebral palsy, spina bifida 

or disabilities sustained in accidents. “We had a board of 

directors that was proud of what was going on, being a part 

of a program for all kinds of children, and they backed the 

staff 100 percent,” he says. “It was easy.” 

What wasn’t always easy was raising the funds necessary to 

operate Children’s Care. Morrison would travel to Pierre when 

the state Legislature was open. Instead of paying for a hotel 

room, he slept in chairs or on the floor of someone’s home.

“It was not easy raising money in those days, but you 

always came back to staff that were doing a good job—to kids 

that were learning, accomplishing things, and getting ahead,” 

Morrison says. 

In the 1940s, polio epidemics were sweeping the nation. By 

the end of that decade, it was estimated that more than 2,000 

children in eastern South Dakota were recovering from polio. 

A three-year fundraising effort took place; when it ended, 

more than $550,000 had been pledged, with no federal or state 

funds. Morrison continued to raise money after his arrival in 

1951. He would ask clubs such as Rotary or Sertoma to pledge 

a dollar a month. 

“A club would send us $12 a year,” he says. “Can you imagine? 

We thought that was the biggest thing in the world. But you get 

about 15 clubs together, and they paid for one teacher.” 

Morrison retired in 1984 after pioneering new services and 

proposing many of South Dakota’s special education laws. He 

often returns to the school he helped found, marveling at the 

changes that have occurred in almost 60 years. One thing 

that hasn’t changed, is the philosophy that built 

“Crippled Children’s”: “When it comes to kids, there’s 

always a way to get the job done.”

Dear friends of Children’s Care, 

There’s been a different feel to this year’s state 

legislative session. The financial realities that our 

governor and legislators must contend with are as 

difficult as perhaps they have ever been. Without a 

doubt, we will all feel the impact of the impending 

budget cuts. Often, however, it seems that the least 

powerful members of society suffer the most when 

budgets get tight. Children, elders, and individuals 

with disabilities–all depend on government officials 

and those who elect them to ensure that funding is 

adequate to care for them when they cannot care 

for themselves. 

Of the approximately 2,000 boys and girls we 

serve each year through various programs, it’s the 

programs that serve children who require inpatient 

or residential care at Children’s Care in Sioux Falls 

that will feel the proposed Medicaid cuts the most. 

These programs rely heavily on Medicaid funding 

for their highly specialized inpatient and residential 

care. In fact, 90% of funding that supports the 

children in these programs comes from Medicaid. 

The 10% cut that has been proposed will have a 

devastating impact upon Children’s Care’s operating 

budget. 

There are not a lot of care alternatives for these 

children, and we have worked hard to be costeffective 

while ensuring they have the very best care 

in a loving environment. The Children’s Care 

Foundation helps in supporting our mission in the 

maximum way they can–we must protect the 

principal of endowed funds, as we must ensure the 

corpus remains to support future generations of 

children. 

As we all struggle to find answers to the 

challenges before us, we thank you for the 

continued support you provide to our special 

children. You are truly the safety net that ensures 

they are not forgotten.

Keep on, keepin’ on.

It has been nearly 18 years since I first came to work 

for what was then Crippled Children’s Hospital & 

School. We were just beginning to serve infants and 

children under the age of three. Seeing those babies 

changed my life. It was evident that there were great 

people doing great things here and I hoped that I could 

help in some small way. 

When I walked into my basement office that first day, 

I found tens of thousands of note cards, neatly sorted in 

several cabinets, that covered an entire wall. Each card 

documented the historic generosity of an individual or 

family that cared about children with special needs. 

“How can I ever get to know and thank all these people 

for the difference they have made?” I thought. The task 

seemed daunting. 

Since then, that task has been one of the most 

rewarding opportunities of my life. In those first few 

years, I got to know our founders, like Dr. E. B. 

Morrison, Nurse Irene Fisher Coon, and fundraiser 

Montana Lisle Reese, plus countless other individuals 

who wanted to help our kids. I heard their stories and 

helped to carry on their legacy. I was privileged to know 

talented board members who gave thousands of free 

hours to help kids. Not to mention the many, many 

donors, like you, I am now privileged enough to call 

“friend.” And then there is the staff… 

Almost everyone who has ever worked here is a 

special person with one mission, to help a child be all 

they can be. I have seen this outstanding staff help 

children develop to a level that often times their parents 

didn’t think was possible. Five years after I started 

working here, my wife and I had a son with 

disabilities—and the staff was there for my family. 

In this annual report edition of Reflections, I am 

always amazed at the number of people who want to 

better the lives of special children. There is no way to 

adequately show appreciation to every person listed 

here for what they have given in time, talent, and 

money to help our kids. I am especially in awe of those 

who have given to the children through their estate plan. 

It saddens me to say that this will be my last column 

for Reflections, and the last opportunity I have to say 

“thank you,” as I will be leaving Children’s Care soon. 

Although I will no longer be on staff, my heart will 

always be with CCHS and the mission of this great 

organization. 

Irene Fisher Coon had a motto she shared with me 

back in those early days that I will always keep on my 

lips: “Keep on, keeping on.” That attitude makes 

everything possible. Thank you for helping me, the 

staff, but most importantly the thousands of children 

served by CCHS every year to "Keep on, keeping on."

Many service clubs across the state funded items from the Wish List to meet the children’s 

therapy and education equipment needs or supported special program areas. Groups rising to 

meet these needs included Knights of Columbus Marquette Council, Knights of 

Columbus St. Michael Council. Thank you to the many groups who spent time with kids 

and provided enrichment activities throughout the year: Sioux Falls Pheasants, Sioux

The ABATE Motorcycle Group has purchased and delivered 

Christmas gifts to Children’s Care for more years than anyone can 

remember. The ABATE Santa had a snowy ride in his special 

edition North Pole side car this past December. 

Eleven students from Western Michigan University’s Alternative 

Winter Experience program spent a week volunteering at 

Children’s Care, winning many hearts among children, staff and 

families. 

which provided specialized equipment and supplies to bring this great program to more 

individuals. And thanks to the South Dakota Arts Council helping bring the Artist in Residence 

program to the students who attend school at Children’s Care. 

Christmas is a special time for children everywhere. Thank you to the many churches, 

groups and businesses that make the holidays a special time for the children living at 

Children’s Care Hospital & School. Thank you to Knology, First Premier Bank,

We are blessed at Children’s Care to have many individuals and couples who 

remember our children in their estate plans. Some leave all of their estate for the 

special children served by Children’s Care, others leave a portion of their estate. We 

are grateful for all legacy gifts that help ensure that all children get the care and 

help that every child deserves. 

Rudolph “Rudy” Anderson had a lifelong love affair with John Deere tractors. 

He lived his whole life in the Beresford, SD, area, and spent his professional life 

farming. His first tractor was a D John Deere, and at age 87, he restored a B John 

Deere. He was famous, also, for his expertise as a clock builder and repairman. He 

loved visiting with people, and enjoyed being involved with his church. He passed 

away at age 92 in Beresford. He never married, but enjoyed his extended family and 

chose to remember our children as part of his legacy. 

Ruth Barnes, 95, died January 2, 2010 in Pipestone. She was born in South 

Dakota, and moved as a young girl to the Pipestone area, where her family farmed. 

As a young woman, Ruth and her sister owned and operated a café called Barck’s in 

Pipestone. She married Maurice Barnes in 1940, and they started the Redi-Mix 

Concrete Plant and Barnes Sand and Gravel in Pipestone, where she kept the books. 

They retired in 1973, and enjoyed 20 years of retirement together until Maurice’s 

death in 1993. Ruth continued to live in Pipestone, where she enjoyed gatherings 

with her large family. She is survived by ten siblings and many nieces and nephews. 

Violet (Moehlmann) Hendricks grew up in Glenwood, MN and Plymouth 

County, IA, and married Albert Moehlmann in 1940. They farmed near Westfield, IA 

and later started a trucking business, with Violet driving truck for 25 years. Violet sold 

the business two years after Albert’s death in 1974. She married E.F. Hendricks in 

1977 and they farmed until his death in March of 1994. Violet then made her home 

in Hawarden. Violet did volunteer driving for others, and enjoyed flowers, gardening, 

bingo, and family gatherings. She was active in her church and served as a city 

councilor in Chatsworth, IA. Her greatest legacy was her two children, and we are 

grateful she also remembered the boys and girls at Children’s Care. She passed away 

July 25, 2010 in Akron, IA, at age 86.

Estate Gifts Ensure Care for Special Children 

Rudy Anderson Ruth Anna Elisa Barnes Violet Hendricks Olga Kuhlmann Duane Muxen Charles Schamel 

Olga Kuhlmann grew up on a farm near Columbus, NE. She married Henry 

Kuhlmann in 1940, and farmed near Luverne, MN until 1974. In 1979 they moved 

into town, and Henry passed away in 1992. Olga loved sewing and especially making 

quilts. She was active in her church, and enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and 

traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe. She and Henry had many extended family 

members, but no children of their own, and chose to remember the special children 

at CCHS. She passed away peacefully on August 7, 2010 at the age of 91. 

Duane Muxen passed away December 30, 2009 at his home in rural Doland, 

SD, at age 86. A lifelong South Dakotan, Duane farmed with his wife Gladys, whom 

he married in 1946, near Frankfurt until her death in 1999. Duane continued living 

on the farm and kept busy restoring Massey-Harris tractors. He married Arlene 

Nielsen in 2003. Duane was active in the Masonic Lodge and Lions Club. He served 

sixteen years as Spink County Commissioner and several terms on the Doland School 

Board. He is survived by his wife Arlene, two children, and two grandchildren, plus 

extended family. 

Charles Donald Schamel was born in Lohrville, IA in 1909. Don married Jane 

Storm in 1936 and lived in Milbank, SD, where he worked at the Cost to Coast Store 

and The Mercantile. In 1945, the couple moved to Vancouver, WA, where he worked 

in the shipyards and selling cars. He also worked in decorator installation, and was 

proud to have hung pictures and curtains in the Oregon governor’s mansion. He was 

a great dancer, and loved helping neighbors with fix-it projects and other tasks to 

help them stay independent. Jane passed away in 1982, and Don remained in 

Washington until his death in June 2010 at age 100. Don and Jane had no children 

of their own, and chose to remember our children with special needs.

Mall Walk sets new fundraising record!

Children’s Care serves many adults through outpatient services, 

especially orthotics, prosthetics, and durable medical 

equipment through their division of Rehabilitation Medical

Care in Rapid City.

A record $85,575 was raised February 5th at the 17th annual Mall Walk for Kids, a fundraiser 

for Children's Care Hospital & School held at the Empire Mall, Sioux Falls. Well over 1000 walkers 

came out for the event, making it the best attended ever, as well as raising an amazing $10,000 

more than last year! 

The top individual fundraiser at Mall Walk 2011 was Brandon (and mom Sara) Sprock of 

George, IA. The top four fundraisers were Dionne Hento of Yankton; Karlee (and mom Missy) 

Hughes of Dakota Dunes; and Jeff Horstmeyer of Sioux Falls. 

The top fundraising team was the Mighty Movers, led by team captain Marne Dekkers of 

Sioux Falls, which raised a Mall Walk team record of over $9800. The team with the most 

registered walkers was Jordyn & Friends, led by team captain Lori Rath of Rock Rapids, IA, with 

58 walkers.

The Mall Walk is hosted by the Children's Care Auxiliary. Every penny will go directly to 

purchase therapy and education equipment for the children served by Children’s Care

1950’s Photo Icon 

Remembers “Crippled Children’s” 

Pat Hauswald with the photo of himself as a youngster at “Crippled 

Children’s” in the 1950s. 

Pat Hauswald wasn’t supposed to be playing ball—after all, he was at “Crippled 

Children’s Hospital & School,” as it was known in the mid 1950s, to recover from 

Perthes Disease, which required him to stay off his right leg. He insisted on swinging 

at the ball, though, and caught the eye of Dr. E.B. Morrison, who was at the school 

that day with a photographer. The photo was snapped, and for several years, Pat’s 

photo was part of the logo for the Reflections newsletter and other promotional 

materials for “Crippled Children’s.” 

Pat was in town recently to visit family, and stopped by to see how his old school 

looked. We took his picture next to our history wall and his iconic photo. A Sioux Falls 

native, Pat was a day patient/student at CCHS for about two years. (His younger 

brother also spent time here with the same hip joint condition, common in young 

boys.) He healed well enough to graduate from high school, do a tour in Viet Nam, 

attend the University of Sioux Falls and get a teaching job in Friendship, Wisconsin, 

that involved teaching AP English Literature, supervising the school yearbook and 

newspaper, coaching football, cross country, and golf. From 1968 to the late 80’s he 

played Dixieland banjo at the world famous Showboat Saloon in Wisconsin 

Dells.“Thank God for Crippled Children’s,” says Pat. “Our family wouldn’t have had 

the money for treatment otherwise—I don’t think anybody had any money after 

World War II.” 

Still in Wisconsin, Pat is retired from teaching and looking forward to playing for 

his 50th class reunion in 2014 with the folk trio that was part of his Washington High 

School experience. His most vivid memories of Crippled Children’s? “Lunchtime, 

playing outside, and Dr. Morrison. And that photo—my mom was so proud.”

We Remember 

Alex Mohr, age 23, who passed away on 

Sunday, December 19, 2010. Alex is survived 

by his parents, Robert and Karen Mohr, a sister, 

Jessica, and a brother, Max, all of Mitchell, plus 

many other relatives. Alex became a resident at 

Children’s Care in 1995 and graduated in 2005. 

He moved to South Dakota Achieve and lived 

there until his passing. Alex was a handsome 

and personable young man who loved loud noises, 

four wheelers, and being outside. He also loved 

animals, country music, and participating in the 

Children’s Care Mall Walk, where he could see 

old friends. Our hearts and prayers are with 

Alex’s family.

Erin Stabnow, 

MA, BCBA 

Teacher and behavior 

analyst Erin Stabnow has 

been named the 2010 Legend 

of the Year at Children’s Care 

Hospital & School. 

Erin joined the staff at 

Children’s Care in Sioux Falls 

in October 2000. She has 

worked in a variety of roles, 

but especially enjoys being 

a special education teacher. 

Her combined educational experience and Applied Behavior 

Analysis skills allow her to develop and implement 

teaching programs based on students’ Individual 

Education Plans and behavioral programming, and 

bring positive change to our most challenging students. 

A native of Barnesville, MN, Erin holds a Bachelor of 

Science Degree in Elementary Education from 

Minnesota State University, Moorhead; a Master of Arts 

Degree in Special Education from the University of 

South Dakota; and has completed BCBA certification 

courses from the Florida Institute of Technology. She 

and her husband Jason have three children, Blake, 8; 

Lauren, 5; and Shelby, born in October.
