After his dramatic victorY in. the
Boiton Marathon, Alberto Salazar
Tii"iora his duel with Dick Beordslev
his plans to begin setting sights
-ina
on the DAZ Otympics-in on interview
iiin ,aitors'Ed AYres and Phil
Stewart.
RT: Before Boston, You said You had
"no doubts" that You'd win. When
vou sot to 25 miles and Dick Beardsley
was itill in front of you, did you then
have any doubts?
Salazar: Not really. I was always confident.
I felt bad, but later I knew it
was because I was dehYdrated' But I
knew I was stronger (than BeardsleD,
and I knew I was much quicker' No
way was he going to beat me.
RT: Some PeoPle thought BeardsleY
might have won if he hadn't been cut
off by a motorcYcle coP.
Salazar: I was a little disappointed
with his comments afterward-all this
stuff about motorcycles cutting him
off, people shoving, and a bus hitting
f,itti.'rni bus didnt hit him, he fended
it off with his hands. To say he might
have won if it weren't for the motorcycle
is ridiculous.
RT: Just what haPPened in that last
mile?
Ulrro'Teom
Salazurz "No way was
Salazar: I was running behind him until
the last half mile, and kept trying to
oull even so I could see where I was
loing, but the crowd didn't leave much
ioom and he wouldn't let me. Then we
made a right hand turn and I Pulled
even as wJ went up that little hill just
before the sharP left turn into the
finish. I could see he was tightening up'
I slowed down a little to look for the
opening in the crowd where You make
that left-I hadn't realized you have to
almost double back there-and that's
where he came uP on mY right. Until
then I had nevei broken into a hard
drive. I was losing time looking
around. Then I saw the finish line 150
meters awaY and I sPrinted.
RT: So it wasn't really as close a race
as it looked?
Salazar: I won bY two seconds, but it
*ui " two seconds I knew would be
thiie. It could have been ten seconds if
i- ttua *unted to sprint the last half
mile.
RT: There was Plenty of talk about
Beardsley's troubles with the crowcl'
IilTE BEER ANB THE
the motorcYcle, and so on. Did You
have any difficulties of Your own?
Salazar: Yeah, but the difference is
that Beardsley is not a streetwise runner.
He tripped (Bill) Rodgers in New
York a couple of years ago and almost
tripped me in Boston, cutting across
foi iome water. Sometimes the motorcvcles
would get squeezed into our way
by the crowd ahead, and BeardsleY
would continue to run straight toward
them instead of moving around them.
RT: Still, that's a rough gauntlet to
run. Would You say the crowd was out
of control?
Salazar: Yes. The worst of it was the
fumes from the vehicles. In one place,
a spectator swung at BeardsleY and
misied him, and Punched me right in
the chest-it knocked the wind out of
me for 60 Yards. But You don't make
excuses!
RT: At least twice, You have finished
iaces with dangerouslY high or low
body temperatures-four years ago ln
Falmouth, when Your temperature
ieached l{i8 degrees after you collapsed
