at the finish, and in Boston this April
when it dropped to 88' Is this a special
vulnerability of Yours?
Salazar: I think it's because I Push
mvself harder. I have no trouble with
treat if I've trained for it. I ran a 28:03
lOk in Miami after training in the heat
for three weeks. Before Boston, I was
training where it was 45 degrees at the
hottest. That (the warm weather in
Boston) was a big change in mY bodY'
RT: If it had been cooler at Boston
and if you hadn't run a hard 10,000
meters against Henry Rono nine days
before, what would have haPPened?
Salazar: The time would have been
much faster-over a minute.
RT: That would have been 2:07:50 or
under! So you feel Boston is faster
than New York, desPite the hills?
Salazar: Yes-You get over the hills
pretty fast.
RT: Will you go back to Boston?
Salazar: Not under the Present conditions.
prize money. This year it actually cosl
me money to go to Boston.
RT: Will You run New York this fall?
Salazar: Yes.
RT: Are there anY other marathoners
in the sub-2: I I class right now who
have your leg speed and could race you
even over the last 300 Yards?
Salazar: Well, obviously Craig Virgin'
Others may have better actual leg
speed, but not the same sPeed over
tbf-tney can't sustain it over a long
time.
RT: You have established yourself as
the best marathoner in the world, but
at lOk you've been beaten at least by
Henry Rono. How do you rate yourself
among the world's 10,000 meter runners,
ind how do You rate Your chances
for a lOk medal in the OlYmPics?
Salazar: Last year, I was ranked 6th in
the world. Now I'd rate myself among
the top three.
RT: Are you serious about a
marathon-10,000 double in the Olympics?
Salazar: If I think I'm caPable of a
third in the 10,000 and first in the
marathon, I'll probably just run the
marathon. If I think I can win them
both, I may run both.
RT: Now that You have won New
York and Boston and broken the world
record, what do You do next?
Salazar: I'm going to run three to five
road races-two marathons and a
couple of others-a Year until the
Olympics.
RT: Do you like to do much of Your
running off-road, on trails or grass?
Salazar: Yes, a large Proportion-I'd
say 60 percent of mY 120 miles a week,
I iun on the wood chiP trails around
Eugene.
RT: Do You think You'll still be running
when You're 40 or 50?
Salazar: I think I'll run to stay in condition
all my life. I don't think I'll run
masters competition. I've been running
hard for ten Years, and I maY run hard
for ten more, until my early thirties or
whenever I think I've reached my full
ootential. But I can't see running like
itrat att my life. It's a lot of stress'
When I'm older, I'll probably run four
or five miles a daY. There are other
things in life to enjoy. D
