GM’S COMMUNIQUÉ:
Happy Birthday America!
It is with great pride that I celebrate July 4th every year. Citizenship is truly an honor, and I still can’t believe how far I’ve come to be part
of this great nation. (If you don’t know this about me yet, I was born and raised in Austria).
What is patriotism? Defined as “love and devotion to one’s country”. I’d like to take it a step further today. Can one be patriotic to one’s
Club? I don’t think that would be a stretch to the meaning of the word. Patriotism to me personally also means pride, and there are certainly
lots of proud HRC patriots I observe every day. As I get to know more and more of you, this immense sense of pride in your Club always
comes through loud and clear. Many conversations, be it phone calls, emails or even comment cards, usually are accompanied by the
statement: “We’ve been members since…!” A question I usually ask is if you grew up at the Club. At no other Club did I ever meet as many
members who tell me about their childhood experiences at the Houston Racquet Club, so common sense dictates that this tradition shall
continue, and I certainly hope it does.
“Poolside food and beverage service much improved - Why are the TVs in the Fitness Center on all day? - Kay Kay’s senior fitness classes
are great - Superb dinner - Complete incompetence in ___, fix it - Carmen is the best - Anna Gloria is the best - Where do I park during
swim meets? - We need more umbrellas - Why did I not get a black napkin? - Food needs improvement - Food was excellent - Service
needs improvement - Service was excellent - Why can’t we use the minimum in the Grill? - Raise the temperature in Fitness Center - Lower
the temperature in Fitness Center - Mothers Day service was nonexistent - Thank you for valet parking - Pro Shop looks great - Enjoyed
the catfish buffet - Jose was a great server and on top of things - Group exercise classes are too loud - Group exercise classes are great
- Macy does not have “no” in her vocabulary, great job - You should have painted the Pro Shop burnt orange, not maroon red…!”
Okay, so I made the last one up. However, I wanted to provide you with a brief glimpse of the intricacies of operations and what’s
important to you individually. One particular comment I get repeatedly and it continues to perplex me is: “I don’t mean to bother you with
this, as I’m sure it’s not that important.” Well, if it’s important to you, it’s certainly important to me.” Never apologize for suggestions, but
please do honor one request: Please provide me with comments that may affect other members negatively immediately. It makes my job
of managing much easier. Not everything will get fixed right away, since priorities dictate time table of action items, but we will get to it
eventually. All in all, your ongoing suggestions mean you are proud of your Club and so am I. Thank you for the “answers to the test” and
please keep them coming.
Last month I wrote about children in a private club environment, manners, respect, and my role as your Club Manager. Due to the many
comments I received about this particular GM Communiqué, I wanted to take a brief moment to thank you for your calls and visits on this
issue. Some of you told me that it touched your heart, and that certainly means a lot to me!
Our next GM Mix & Mingle is July 15th. I am looking forward to your observations. See you then.
and purpose of man” - William Gladstone
SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY
The best and smartest high school English teacher I know is Karen Krajcer who teaches at the Keystone School
in San Antonio. She prepared this list of summer reading for her students and was kind enough to let me share
it with you. This just might inspire you as you are sitting on that comfy lounge chair by the pool here at HRC.
After I give you her list I will then give you my very favorite summer book. So here it goes:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon - every Senior is required to read this book
A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
Sondra Maxfield A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini
The Inheritance of Loss - Kiran Desai
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
Life of Pi - Yann Martel
Disgrace - J.M. Coetzee 1999 - every Senior is required to read this book
One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez 1967
Cat’s Cradle - Kurt Vonnegut 1963
The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy 1997
A Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy Toole 1980
The Road - Cormac McCarthy 2006
So many of these classics are books that we all read in high school or college. It’s nice to know that they are still considered among
the very best. Also you will find “new” books on this list that you might want to read this summer. It’ll make you feel so young - to be
reading books that high school kids are reading at the very same time.
Now for my favorite all time book for now or any time in your life I strongly recommend: The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch - 2008
It’s been out awhile so many of you may have already read it - but for those who haven’t - you’re in for a real treat. I even gave it to
my boss for “Father’s Day.”
Karen Krajcer wrote this final paragraph to her students at the bottom of the summer reading list.
“On the second day of school you will write an in-class essay on your novel of choice. Take your books everywhere you go this
summer. They get so lonely when you ignore them.”
What a girl!! You go girl!
By way of introduction to those many new members who don’t know me, I have
been a member of HRC since 1981, when my husband Bob (a former HRC
president) suggested I take a tennis lesson. Millions of dollars later, in 1987 I won
my first national championship. I also began teaching tennis here at HRC, a career
which lasted until 2005, when I had my first grandchild. I have continued to play
nationally; winning 29 more USTA balls, and recently completed a 2 year stint as
president of the National Senior Women’s Tennis Association. As I approach my
60th birthday, I thought it might be wise to expand my tennis experience beyond
the national championships. So Bob and I took off for Majorca, Spain, last month
to see how I’d do in the world championships.
It was great! First I wanted to compare the HRC National Senior Women’s Clay Court Championships to the
World Championships. The annual NSWCCC here at HRC is WAY better in so many ways – organization
(if I do say so myself), facilities, court condition, member support, and player benefits. The competition at
the Worlds was about like entering a USTA championship at the quarterfinal round. By this I mean that
there were NO easy matches! Having become accustomed to playing women from all over the U.S., it was
a similar experience competing against players from Canada, South Africa, Russia, Germany, Spain, and
France. Language was never a problem. Everyone spoke some English, although Majorca’s language was
really nothing like the Spanish that we speak here in Houston. To me, the red clay played very similarly to our
green clay courts, perhaps a bit slower. It is traditional there to groom your own court before leaving it for the
next player, so the court surfaces really deteriorated during a long day of play.
Bottom line – how did I do? In singles, in a draw of 6-4, I lost in the round of 1-6 to a South African player in
almost 4 hours – 6-7, 7-5, 7-5. On the way I had defeated the 8th seed from Canada 6-4, 6-2. In doubles,
playing with Margie Cooper (Florida), we lost in the quarters 6-4, 6-4 to the French national champions (seeded
4th). I definitely was competitive with all of the players, possibly because I was so much more fit than most of
them. Will I do it again? Maybe. Right now I’ll teach my grandchildren to play.
Brunch: As defined by Webster’s Dictionary; “a meal usually taken late in the morning that
combines a late breakfast and an early lunch”
Brunch is one of my favorite meals as it is a combination of sweet and savory dishes, fresh
juices and some freshly brewed coffee. Of course there is also the option of enjoying a
glass of champagne or a nice spicy Bloody Mary. This is a relaxing meal best enjoyed at
a leisurely pace with family and friends. Good conversation or perhaps a shared Sunday
Times if dining as a couple.
The Club offers two brunch options which I invite you to enjoy. Upstairs in Seasons the brunch is expansive
and has a variety of offerings from omelets, Eggs Benedict, fresh oysters on the half shell, smoked salmon and
shrimp to salads, hot entrees and an array of homemade desserts. It is a beautiful setting as you can look out
over the pools while enjoying your repast.
Brunch in the Grill is more of a casual affair with freshly baked waffles and omelets made to order, traditional
breakfast items and a hot entrée offering along with the salad bar and desserts.
Both are great for getting the family together for a nice meal before heading out to enjoy the rest of your
Sunday. Brunch at the Houston Racquet Club is a super way to end the weekend before that dreaded Monday
morning alarm clock shatters the silence.
A Positive Change
By Julie Veiseh
FiTnESS
During the summer it is easy to get dehydrated. Even though the pool is cool and wet that doesn’t mean you are getting the hydration
you need inside your body. Drinking half your body weight in ounces of water a day is the recommended amount according to the
nutrition guidelines. Before going to the gym to work out always consider if you have been drinking enough water the day before. Signs
of dehydration are: dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, and fatigue. If these symptoms occur, please ask yourself if you have been drinking
enough water. This doesn’t include coffee, diet coke, tea, or margaritas! Enjoy your summer by making the first drink choice water!
Just a reminder about the new summer group exercise schedule and times, please come to the Fitness Center to grab a schedule and
try a class. You’ll be very satisfied after working out with the instructors here at the HRC. We strive to have each class accommodate
exactly what your needs are in the area of cardiovascular training, strength/toning, flexibility, and endurance building. For questions
please feel free to contact Julie Veiseh, Group Exercise Director at jveiseh@houstonracquetclub.com
Fitness Move of
the Month
Fitness Member
of the Month
Lindsey
Putterman
Lindsey Putterman has been working with Clista for over
5 years. She recently graduated from Emory, and has
been dedicated to the Fitness Center ever since! Lindsey
works out with me at least 4-5 times times a week. She
loves the pilates reformer and has increased her strengh
and flexibility a great deal. We also focus a great deal on
the quality of each program that we do, making sure to
change things up and execute appropriately.
This move is the TRIANGLE-
ASANA from our State of
the Art Yoga Program. The
Triangle-Asana is part of the
Vinyasa Yoga class held in the
Fitness Center. You can really
get a full-body workout with
this particular move. It helps
strengthen ankles, knees, and
the hip joint. Also stretches
hamstrings, obliques, and the
back muscles. Because this is
an unstable position it works all the stabilizers which are
the core muscles. If you haven’t tried Yoga now is a great
time to do so. Prevent injury while training for your next
tennis tournament, or lubricate the joints for just functional
everyday movement.
Cliff Notes by Cliff Tyree
Yogi Berra once observed “Baseball is 90% mental and the
other half physical.” The same is true of tennis, only more so.
The U.S. has 1/16 of the population but we consume ½ of the
beef worldwide.
Cows kill more people than sharks.
When I started playing tennis the Dead Sea wasn’t even sick.
July is Hot Dog month. We will eat 2 billion hot dogs.
We eat 17 billion quarts of popcorn a year.
Employee of the Month
Amaury Lopez
Employee Since: 2005
Maintenance Dept.
Congratulations to our Employee of the Month,
Amaury Lopez. Amaury is an outstanding employee
and is awarded a bonus check for all his hard work. He
works extremely hard for Raul and the Maintenance
Dept. with lighting, plumbing, painting and just about
anything to assist in the upkeep of the Club. When
he is away from the Club, Amaury enjoys music and
dancing. Amaury is currently taking ESL classes to
help him to better communicate with his co-workers
and members. Thanks Amaury for a job well done.
The Cheeseburger in Paradise Party was a hit with HRC members. Thanks to Kellie Stuff and
the Hospitality Committee for organizing a great night of fun for members and their guests.
Also, to Chef Wood for all the mouth watering fare.
