Introduction 

Welcome to the Coalville Town Centre Guide. This guide will 

help you make the most of the town centre and discover all 

Coalville’s hidden gems. Whether you live in the town or are 

just simply visiting there is plenty to keep you and your family 

active and entertained. With everything from a local market, 

niche shops and divine restaurants there is something in 

Coalville for all to enjoy.

of over 32,000 in South East France. 

• Largest town and administrative centre of North West 

Leicestershire.

• Home of Action Man (Action Man was originally produced and sold in 

the United Kingdom and Australia by Palitoy Ltd of Coalville, Leicestershire 

from 1966 until 1984). 

• Height of clock tower – 21m (68ft) above pavement level.

History of Coalville 

Coalville is the administrative centre of North West 

Leicestershire District and is located at the heart of the 

National Forest. As it’s name suggests the town grew up with 

the advent of coal mining. George and Robert Stephenson 

and William Stenson all have links to the town through mining 

or development of the railways. Textile and engineering 

industries also prospered in the town in the 19th century.

Shopping 

Coalville boasts over 250 businesses in the town centre 

ranging from small independent retailers to larger national 

chain stores. Coalville’s independent sector is particularly 

strong with shops like the Matchless Home Brewing shop that 

you won’t find anywhere else. 

So whether you’re the kind of shopper that likes to search out 

hidden gems or whether you’re a chain store queen Coalville 

can deliver what you’re looking for. 

Eating Out 

Coalville’s restaurant sector continues to go from strength 

to strength. From Italian to Indian restaurants and numerous 

places to stop for a spot of lunch or evening meal there is 

something in Coalville to suit all tastes.

with businesses, voluntary organisations, the community sector, the 

Police, North West Leicestershire District Council, Leicestershire 

County Council and other organisations to improve the town centre 

and make it a better place for all.

Shopmobility: 

Coalville Shopmobility is located in the Market Hall and provides 

scooter and wheelchair hire for people with limited mobility to enable 

them to access Coalville town centre. If needed, the equipment will be 

brought to your car.

Tuesday – 9:00am – 2:00pm 

Friday and Saturday – 9:00am – 3:00pm 

Membership and cost: 

Membership costs £5 per annum plus £1 every time you visit. 2 proofs 

of identity are required, one of which must have your address on it.

Things to do in and around Coalville 

In Coalville 

Snibston 

Snibston is a multi-award-winning, flagship 

museum located on the site of the former 

Snibston Colliery. Created by famous railway 

pioneer George Stephenson, the colliery 

buildings are rare and nationally important. 

Snibston has the largest fashion and costume 

display outside London and is the biggest 

interactive science, design and technology 

museum in the East Midlands. It holds a wealth 

of nationally important collections including the 

earliest medieval miners’ clothing and tools, 

Britain’s oldest surviving mobile theatre and the 

world’s oldest Auster light aircraft. 

Featuring a large outdoor play area, a community exhibition gallery and 

free-to-enter country park, Snibston has something for everyone, and is 

a day of excitement inside and out!

Snibston Country Park and Grange Nature Reserve 

Snibston Country Park is located at the rear of the museum within the former 

colliery site. The park was designated Leicestershire’s first Local Nature 

Reserve in 1993. The country park also includes the Grange Nature Reserve 

which is a special area of ecological interest. 

The country park and nature reserve cover more than 100 acres which offer 

a wealth of mixed habitats. There are a variety of walks, cycle tracks, picnic 

areas, ponds and fishing lakes to enjoy. 

The Mining Heritage Trail 

A circular route approximately 9 miles long that links the villages of Coleorton 

and Swannington with Coalville, can be picked up at the Snibston Country 

Park. A guided walk of the Swannington section of the trail can be arranged 

with the Swannington Heritage Trust by contacting Denis Baker:

Coalville Park 

Coalville Park is situated just a couple of 

minutes away from the town centre on London 

Road. There are plenty of activities to suit all 

age groups including tennis courts which are 

free to use and a children’s playground, whilst 

there are also flower beds and open spaces to 

enjoy. Coalville Park is open to the public daily 

from 8am until dusk. 

Urban Forest Park 

The Urban Forest Park is situated to the north west of Coalville on Linden 

Way. Formerly a landfill site, the area has been transformed into an important 

habitat for wildlife. Over 8,400 trees have been planted in the last decade, 

many of which are now starting to develop, giving a feel of the forest to 

come. 

Nature Alive 

Previously known as the ‘Overflows’, Nature Alive is now a designated 

local nature reserve, a far cry from its original use as a coal stocking yard 

and settling pools for Snibston Colliery. The site is rich in flora and fauna, 

boasting such habitants as water voles and great crested newts. 

To visit Nature Alive you can park in Thornborough Road Retail Park and 

enter the site via the footpath located next to Aldi.

Around Coalville 

Donington le Heath Manor House 

The museum is based in a Medieval Manor 

House dating back to 1280. Visitors to the 

house can see restored rooms and displays on 

medieval life. The house is set in 17th century 

style gardens. Donington le Heath Manor house 

has links to Everard Digby and the Gunpowder 

plot. Classics Tea Room in the barn serves 

light lunches, drinks and cakes and also hosts 

themed evenings.

Hough Mill

Mount St Bernard’s Abbey 

Mount St Bernard’s Abbey is a Cistercian 

monastery of the Strict Observance (Trappists) 

founded in 1835. 

The Cistercian Order dates back to the 12th 

century and the Trappists to the mid-17th 

century. Mount St Bernard’s Abbey is the only 

abbey belonging to this order left in England. 

Admission is free to the monastery and it 

boasts a fantastic shop which contains many 

home made products such as honey and wax 

candles.

Grace Dieu Ruins 

The Grace Dieu Priory was an Augustinian priory founded around 1235- 

1241 by Rohese de Verdon and dissolved in 1538. The priory buildings still 

exist as ruins. A conservation project on the remains was completed in 2005 

and the site is now open to the public. 

Visitors can now take part in guided walks for a small fee and admission to 

the ruins is free every day of the week including bank holidays.

The National Forest 

Coalville is in the heart of the National Forest, a 200 square mile area of 

‘forest in the making’ which also includes Ashby de la Zouch and Burton on 

Trent. More than 7 million trees have been planted and woodland cover has 

increased from 6% to nearly 18%.

Coalville Market has over 70 stalls selling a wide variety of fresh 

produce, flowers, jewellery and much more. There is a whole range 

of goods and services from books, clothes, fresh fruit and vegetables. 

There is even a washing machine repair business and bicycle repair

Coalville Market is situated adjoining the Wilkinsons entrance of
