Attending <strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>Week</strong> events can lead to winning great prizes! As you attend various <strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>Week</strong> events, make sure to<br />

collect a raffle ticket. They come in five different colors that correspond to the types of programs you attend. Your goal is to collect<br />

as many tickets as possible and get at least two of each color, so you will be eligible to win a variety of prizes. In this booklet there<br />

is a ticket color next to each event for your reference. The colors are:<br />

for your ticket number while you explore the fair. Also, if you<br />

collect two full sets of every color (10 tickets total) you will be<br />

entered into the GRAND PRIZE drawing for a semester of FREE<br />

INSTATE TUITION! You must be present to win any prize, so<br />

APB Back to School laserpalooza<br />

Laserpalooza at the Siegel Center from 7-11 p.m. Teams of eight will<br />

be entering The Combat Zone: an inflatable 40ft. x 80ft. maze with<br />

twists and turns that will confuse you and special effect lighting that<br />

will daze you. A slight haze fills the air allowing you to see your laser<br />

beams, but beware because someone may be lurking in the hazy<br />

mist. Your battle will last approximately five minutes so use your<br />

ammo wisely. Your enemies have declared war on you and seven of<br />

them will be involved in this battle. The attack can come from any<br />

enemy in any direction so watch your back. When your mission is<br />

complete you will receive a full colored score card so you can figure<br />

out which of your enemies did the most damage. Good luck and be<br />

safe! DJ and free food while it lasts!<br />

VCU Traditions<br />

<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>Week</strong> – Before classes start each fall, students are treated to a<br />

range of activities to prepare students for the upcoming academic year.<br />

Ram Spirit Walk – The alumni associations welcome freshmen to campus<br />

with a pep rally in Monroe Park. The students then walk as a group to<br />

Convocation led by a marching band, resident advisers and cheerleaders.<br />

Ram Horns in the commons Plaza – Incoming students pass by an<br />

installation in the Commons Plaza to touch giant ram horns, which also<br />

makes for a great spot for fun photos.<br />

Student organization and Volunteer opportunities (SoVo) Fair –<br />

More than 350 student organizations crowd into the Siegel Center to<br />

recruit for their causes. It’s the best way to find out what is going on at<br />

VCU. You can also pick up a freshman class T-shirt, courtesy of the VCU<br />

Alumni Association.<br />

First RAm Friday - Start your semester off with a bang with the<br />

Programming Commission as VCU students take over the <strong>University</strong><br />

Commons for one night. Prizes, games, entertainment, free food and more!<br />

White coat ceremony (Schools of medicine, Pharmacy and<br />

Dentistry) - Annual rite of passage symbolizing the beginning of a<br />

student’s professional career in their chosen field, held at the beginning<br />

of the school year.<br />

Fall Block step show - The Fall Block Step Show, the oldest tradition at<br />

VCU, is held at the Siegel Center and is the largest step show in <strong>Virginia</strong>.<br />

Teams from each of the National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and<br />

sororities compete and celebrate fraternity and sorority life at VCU.<br />

VcU Family weekend - VCU Family <strong>Week</strong>end is filled with activities and<br />

events for students and their families to enjoy. The weekend has a wide<br />

range of programs that highlight all that VCU has to offer. All VCU students<br />

and families are invited to participate in this annual celebration.<br />

Alumni Stars /Alumni Service Awards – The alumni associations<br />

and each school recognizes the career and service achievements of our<br />

most outstanding alumni with a special event on alternating years. One<br />

graduate from each school is honored before a broad university-wide<br />

audience in the fall of each year.<br />

connections (Department of occupational Therapy) - Ritual<br />

of transitioning new entry-level master’s graduates into the profession<br />

during the first week of January.<br />

Homecoming - VCU celebrates homecoming during the Rams<br />

basketball season. This action-packed celebration includes fun activities<br />

all week including the crowning of a king and queen, concerts, service<br />

projects, and much more.<br />

VcUqatar Day – To celebrate VCU’s campus in Qatar and bring the<br />

culture to Richmond, students and guests at <strong>University</strong> Student Commons<br />

can eat Qatari foods, see Qatari decorations and entertainment, pet a live<br />

camel, get henna tattoos, try on Qatari garments and more.<br />

STRUT show - Each spring the STRUT Show brings together fashion<br />

design and marketing students, entertainment, dancers, student models<br />

and local retail stores to create an innovative and explosive show that<br />

draws people from all over Richmond. STRUT <strong>Week</strong> kicks things off with<br />

five days of makeovers, panel discussions and contests leading up to this<br />

campus extravaganza.<br />

intercultural Festival (icF) - A tradition unique to VCU, ICF is a week<br />

of events culminating with the festival in Monroe Park. The festival<br />

combines unique cultural traditions, dancing, performances, and foods<br />

from around the world. Join the over 4,000 people who attend annually!<br />

Alumni month – In addition to Reunions, many other alumni and<br />

campus events are scheduled during April to encourage alumni to visit<br />

campus and experience what’s new.<br />

Rams at Work – During Alumni Month alumni are encouraged to wear<br />

black and gold on Fridays and can request from the alumni associations a<br />

spirit pack of VCU gear to share with their colleagues.<br />

mcV campus Reunion <strong>Week</strong>end – Hundreds of alumni return to<br />

campus each April to reconnect with their school and with their classmates.<br />

Take-offs (School of medicine) and Skit Night (School of<br />

Dentistry) - During the week before commencement, fourth-year students<br />

gather to share fun parodies about their professors and one another.<br />

your Passport to the World – Hosted by the alumni associations,<br />

this is a grand celebration for everyone graduating held during the week<br />

before the May commencement.<br />

Relay for life - One person can make a difference in the fight against<br />

cancer. Join Relay for Life in helping the fight by joining the Relay<br />

committee or signing up with a team to fundraise to end cancer. Join<br />

Relay in fundraising throughout the year, ending with Relay for Life in<br />

the spring semester.
