President’s
Message
by Jody Howard, CAL President
It is my privilege and honor to serve
as your president during the
upcoming year! My goal for this year
is to have us continue working together
to create a strong state organization
supporting all of the members of each
of our associations. We are so fortunate that in Colorado
we have one organization representing all of the
information professionals in the state. We can only become
stronger as we work together for the good of our patrons
and students.
We begin the year with a “bang” during January as
we are the host city for two national conferences (and the
stock show, of course): ALISE (Association for Library and
Information Science Education) from January 20 through
23 and ALA-Midwinter from January 23 through 26.
ALISE was founded in 1915 and provides an
opportunity for library educators to meet, discuss common
issues and share ideas. Typically, it is held prior to ALA-
Midwinter. If you are a library educator and have not had
the opportunity to attend ALISE in the past, I encourage
you to do so this January. Check out the Web site for more
information about the organization and the upcoming
conference.
http://www.alise.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=50703&or
gId=ali
We are rolling out the red carpet for ALA-
Midwinter and have a variety of Colorado sponsored
events to welcome all of the attendees. Shelley Walchak,
our ALA-Councilor, and a small committee have been
working hard to schedule these events. Thank you, Shelley
and Committee members!
Here are some of the exciting events:
#Pre-conference: The Transformational Powers of the
Library: Ensuring the Future of your Library. Friday,
January 23, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This all day event will
include a presentation on the latest OCLC report, From
Awareness to Funding, and a panel discussion on how
some Colorado libraries are making their organization
transformational.
#CAL President’s Reception for Camilla Alire: On
Sunday evening we are hosting a reception for our own
Camila Alire who is, as you know, the president-elect of
ALA. This will be held at the Blair Caldwell Branch of the
Denver Public Library from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday
evening, January 25. Come join me in celebrating
1
Camila’s upcoming presidency. Watch for your invitation
through Evite in early January.
#Exhibit Booth: We will have a booth set up that will
have Colorado “goodies” for all who visit and a continuous
slide show sharing information about various Colorado
Libraries. Please drop by and pick up a sticker that
identifies you as a member of CAL.
#Visit to the Boulder. This will occur on January 23 from
12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will include a visit to the
University of Colorado’s Norlin Library to see the newly
renovated “Research Floor” and the Special Collections
Rare Book Reading Room. Then the tour will continue with
a visit to the Boulder Public Main Library for afternoon tea
and refreshments. Space is limited to 25 participants; you
can sign up at the CAL Web site: http://cal-webs.org
The ALA-Midwinter wiki has additional information
on the happenings at the conference. You can access it at:
http://wikis.ala.org/midwinter2009/index.php/main_Page
Please join me in welcoming all of our professional
colleagues to Denver for these two conferences. It has
been years since these conferences have been held in
Denver, and it would be great if they would return soon.
Let’s provide the conference attendees with a warm
Colorado welcome!
Conference 2009
by Stacy McKenzie, CAL Conference
Planning Chair
The 2008 CAL
Conference,
“Communities
and Libraries” was a
great success and the planning
committee thanks everyone who
presented, attended, and helped out at
the conference.
As we review the evaluations
from vendors and participants we are
excited to start the planning process for the 2009
conference, “Avenues For The Future: PowerOn!” to be
held at the Denver Tech Center Marriott, November 19–21.
Believe it or not our first planning sessions for the
November conference will start in mid-January. There are
many opportunities to help out, from wrangling keynote
speaker, to fundraising. If you are interested in helping
out on the Conference Planning Committee, please contact
Stacy McKenzie at smkenzi@jefferson.lib.co.us or
CAL Readers’ Advisory Interest Group
Red Hot Reads
by Tara Bannon, Chair
•Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg
Larson and Reg Keeland (2008)
An instant bestseller in Europe, this thrilling novel
is the first in a trilogy all to be published posthumously.
Translated from the original Swedish, the novel takes the
reader on an intriguing international trip in search of the
truth behind a mysterious disappearance, which turns out
to be the mere tip of the iceberg as far as family scandals
go.
•How to Talk about Books You Haven’t Read by
Pierre Bayard (2007)
The terms "read" and "unread" are meaningless;
one should speak of books in terms of Heard of, Skimmed,
Forgotten, or Unknown. Much as a mathematician, without
having seen the splash occur, can determine the size,
weight and trajectory of the object that created it; one can
know a book without reading it by observing the affect it
has on society, incorporating trusted opinions and probing
its connection to other works you are familiar with. What
matters, then, about reading, is the book's effect on you,
and it's impact on your internal library, those books that
you carry with you in your heart and mind, either because
you believe their importance in the cultural collective
library or due to your personal connection with them.
•Research Based Reader's Advisory by Jessica
Moyer (2007)
Moyer intertwines theory and practice in the
excellent book on readers’ advisory. The history and
context for readers advisory are explored in essays written
by some of the big names in readers' advisory - Joyce
Saricks, Barry Trott and David Wright to name a few.
Chapters on non-fiction readers’ advisory, book groups,
romance and genre readers, tools and more are all
prefaced by a research review of the relevant literature in
the field.
•Hot Topic - “Locavore”
With the popularity of such works as The
Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan, The End of Food
by Paul C. Roberts and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by
Barbara Kingsolver, the term locavore has achieved
cultural consciousness and was named the 2007 Oxford
American Dictionary’s Word of the Year. For more titles
and a brief history of the movement see the article “Close
to Home: A Fresh Look at Local Eating” by Tara Bannon
available on the NoveList Plus database.
ALA Certification for Paralibrarians Begins in 2010
By Jenny Luper, Chair-Elect
“I want recognition that my job is important, that
my work is valued, that I am valued as a human being.
This is more important than money. I want to be trusted
that I will do what I’m paid for. I need pride in myself and
my job.” – http://www.ala-apa.org/lsscp/
The concept of a national certification program for
library support staff has shifted around, been discussed
and debated for over 15 years. However, a new day has
finally come; the Library Support Services Certification
Program (LSSCP) begins January 1, 2010.
The news of this tremendous undertaking and
sooner-than-expected rollout came at the Colorado
Association of Libraries Conference 2008 workshop hosted
by Nancy Bolt of the American Library Association and
Diana Reese of the Colorado State Library. During the
session, they discussed the reasons why the ALA and the
Western Council of State Libraries are partnering in this
mission for voluntary national certification and the steps
being taken to bring this venture to fruition. All the
attendees, including Jim Rettig, ALA president, were
surprised to hear that ALA would accept applications for
the LSSCP as soon as January 1, 2010.
According to the ALA site, the overall philosophy
of the LSSCP project is that it is a “voluntary certification
program for public and academic library support staff
based on a set of competencies.” The program will be
individually based and portable from state to state, but it
does not guarantee a pay raise or promotion, the site is
careful to mention. Cost of certification hasn’t been
verified yet, though Nancy said they want the program to
be affordable.
(Continued on page 3)
ALA Para Certification Continued
To be approved for certification, each individual’s
competencies are assessed for their prior and new
learning. Nancy said the “assessment method will include
a combination of approved courses and portfolios…
candidates will submit all materials through an electronic
portfolio.” Additionally, the “program will assist candidates
in finding new learning opportunities.” Nancy also
mentioned that applicants will have four years to complete
the program, though the program is not expected to take
that long. There is a host of information on the ALA Web
site: www.ala-apa.org/lsscp.
CAL paraprofessionals are invited to join us at the
CAL Paralibrarian Division Spring 2009 Workshop. The
exact dates and workshops are forthcoming. If you would
like to join the CAL Paralibrarian Division to keep abreast
of new information, please go to
CoASL Update
by Stephen Sweeney, Chair
Reflecting on Thanksgiving, I’m
realizing that there is a lot to be
thankful for this year. CoASL had a
terrific first year, for a lot of reasons.
The asociation has grown in our first
year thanks in part to the Spring
Workshop and the hard work and
dedication of many people.
At CAL this year, 14 people turned out for our
asociation meeting on Saturday. We were able to develop
some great ideas as we’re looking to the future. Thanks go
to CAL for being so welcoming of the newest association in
its ranks, the Colorado Association of Special Libraries.
Thanks to CoASL’s first president, Lizabeth Foster.
As the association grew out of the special library interest
group and out of the imagination of many people, Liz
stepped to the helm for a very important first year. I’m
excited to follow in her footsteps.
Many, many thanks are due Jean Heilig and Linda
Van Wert, the co-chairs of our very successful Spring
Workshop, held at the Cardinal Stafford Library in June.
Everyone came together to create a dynamic that couldn’t
be beat this year!
CAL was a success by all measures. Networking
opportunities galore, program opportunities abounded for
special librarians, and the association meeting was a
terrific place to see the diversity of libraries served by the
members of CoASL.
As we eagerly anticipate what 2009 will bring,
Victoria West-Pawl from CSU-Global has agreed to chair
the Spring Workshop. At this time, however, we are
looking for a co-chair. If you are interested, or know
someone who is, please let me know! This is a rewarding
position, and is a lot of fun too.
Here’s looking to a great New Year!
CASL Update
by Susan Gilbert, President
Happy 2009!
The CASL
Board wishes you a
very happy and
healthy new year. 2009 promises to be
a very exciting year for everyone. We
have been busy planning some meetand-greets
around the state, so please
watch the CASL Blog as the details will
soon roll out.
If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Blog lately,
please take a few minutes to take a glimpse. Better yet,
post an idea or comment! There are some great
discussions going on, so this is your opportunity to
network from the comfort of your own home or even from
school. http://casl.wordpress.com/
Did you catch the live blogging going on during the
CAL Conference? If not, check out the CASL Blog to see
what you might have missed. Or, if you prefer face-to-face
networking, then I encourage you to join a CAL committee
so you don’t miss out. Where can you investigate those
committees? You are correct, on the blog!
Even though it is only January, the TIE conference
is only a few months away. If you liked our first Kickoff to
TIE, the second one will be here before you know it. I
hope to see many of you in June up at Copper Mountain.
More specifics will be coming soon. Gee, where can you
learn more? Where can you tell us what you would like to
see and experience? Yes, on the CASL Blog.
http://casl.wordpress.com/
Do you make new year’s resolutions? I rarely do,
but this year I have one and that is to keep in contact with
as many CASL members as possible. But, in order to
effectively make that happen I will need to hear from you.
What do you need from me and/or your board? What do
you need from each other? For all of the names and
contact information for your CASL Board; yes you got it,
go to the Blog. http://casl.wordpress.com/
Networking is the way we grow and learn. I hope to
virtually see all of you very soon.
CLEF Auction Raises
Over $4,000 for Scholarships!
By Martin Garnar, CLEF Chair/CAL Past-President
The inaugural Events and Services Auction
to raise money for the Colorado Library
Educational Foundation (CLEF) was a huge
success. The silent auction was held at this
year’s CAL conference and included
donations of professional education classes,
room painting, knitwear, social events, and
a host of other events and services. The
winning bids were announced at the conference’s closing
reception, along with the total amount raised: $4,090!
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible
without three elements: the bidders, the donors, and the
auction coordinator.
First, thanks to all the bidders who were willing to
support their colleagues by purchasing these events and
services. If you haven’t sent your check to the CAL office
for your winning bid, please do so at your earliest
convenience.
Second, thanks to all the donors who came up with
these creative items, and who were willing to give their
time and talents to make it all possible.
Finally, thanks to Diane Ellsworth of Colorado
State University for coordinating the donations and
running the auction during the conference -- without her
organizational skills, our first attempt would not have run
as smoothly. Thanks also to Kathleen Noland for office
support and creating the Web donation forms.
Based on this year’s success, we will be making
this a tradition for the foreseeable future, so it’s never too
early to start thinking of what you can donate for the 2009
auction!
In keeping with CLEF’s mission, these funds will be
used to provide scholarships for attending the annual CAL
conference. However, since we have raised more money
than we’ve had in a long time, we may be able to expand
our support to include other CAL events, such as our
spring workshops and Durango Days. Watch the CAL
newsletter and your e-mail for more information on how
CLEF can help you!
Chapter Councilor
It won’t be long before ALA Midwinter will
be in Denver (January 23-28.) A
hard-working team of folks has put
together numerous activities as the host
state.
Included are a pre-conference on January 23rd
entitled, “The Transformational Powers of the Library:
Ensuring the Future of Your Library.” There are only a few
seats left and registration now needs to be done by snail
mail or fax to ALA.
Next we have a fabulous booth display with a
revolving slide show of Colorado libraries and services plus
free giveaways and a place to network with your Colorado
buddies. The booth is a collaborative project with Denver
Public Library.
We have also planned a great trip to Boulder on
Friday afternoon, from 12:30 – 5:30 for $20. See the CAL
Web site for information or to sign-up.
Next, we have a great reception planned for
Camila Alire, ALA-President-elect, on Sunday, January 25
from 7:30 – 9:00 at the Blair-Caldwell Branch of the
Denver Public Library.
It will also be good to see all the CAL Leadership
members on the day before midwinter at the Grant
Humphries Mansion in Denver. Other exciting news is that
our “Capwiz” site is now up and working. This software
allows CAL and ALA to reach out to Coloradans who are
willing to contact their legislators about important library
issues. If you did not get on the contact list during our first
round of requests, please contact me at
We are also looking into organizing a networking
event on the Western Slope. If you are interested in
helping to organize this event (suggest locations, help
with logistics, etc), we would appreciate any input or
advice. You do not need to be on the Membership
Committee to help with the event, although we would be
excited to have a Western Slope contingent. Please
email me at: revenson@jefferson.lib.co.us with any
suggestions.
Thank you and I hope to see you at some of our
future networking events!
Marketing Committee News
The CAL Marketing Committee met in October
and revised the goals for the committee, as well as
determined projects/tasks to work on in 2009 for CAL
Board approval at its January meeting. We encourage
staff from all types of libraries and departments to
consider joining the CAL Marketing Committee to help us
on these ambitious tasks. The next meeting will be
Monday, January 12, from 11am-2pm at the Philip S.
Miller Library in Castle Rock.
For more information about the CAL Marketing
committee visit our Web page at:
Bulgarian Libraries
Interest Group Update
by Nancy Bolt, Chair
This year marked the first full year without the
federal ABLE grant. Activity in the Colorado partnerships
has become more routine and communication slightly
less frequent. However, good friendships and interest in
each other’s libraries continue. And there is much good
news to report about our ongoing impact.
First, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
(BMGF) chose Bulgaria for one of their Global Library
Planning Grants. Informal reports indicate that the
activities in the ABLE project and the success we had
contributed to the BMGF decision to give Bulgaria one of
these grants. The initial Planning Grant is for over
$600,000. Assuming they receive the implementation
grant, it will see one or more computers installed in over
1,200 Bulgarian libraries including peripheral equipment
and training for librarians and the public.
Ani Popova, the Bulgarian evaluator of the ABLE
grant, is a key member of the BMGF Global Libraries
Planning Grant. ULISO, the equivalent of the Bulgarian
Library Association, has changed its name to the
Bulgarian Library and Information Association (BLIA).
They elected Vanya Grashkina, the one of the Bulgarian
ABLE Project Directors, as their president for the next
three years. At least three other ABLE partner libraries
are represented on the new BLIA board.
One of the projects that BLIA wishes to take on
is the training included in the BMGF grant. The Bulgarian
American Credit Bank in Sofia, Bulgaria, decided to
liquidate part of its assets to form the American for
Bulgaria Foundation. One of their first grants was to the
Sofia Public Library’s American Corner for additional
construction on their facility. They also asked Nancy Bolt
to prepare a White Paper on Bulgarian libraries and their
needs and to include some ideas for future projects.
Rebecca Miller, the American evaluator on the ABLE
project, used her evaluation work to write her PhD
dissertation. She has published it now and it’s a
wonderful summary of the great success that ABLE had
AND a good list of how to make it better if we ever do it
again.
In November, I traveled to Bulgaria for the
bi-annual Globenet Conference sponsored by Emporia
State University and Sofia University. ABLE partner
librarians Vania Grashkina, President of BLIA and Radka
Koleva from Varna made presentations about their
library projects and I saw many old friends.
Finally, the British Consulate initiated a project
to train Bulgarian librarians in management. They
invited five Bulgarian librarians to Manchester, England
for training. All five are former ABLE partner librarians.
Our impact continues to grow.
CoPLA
Update
by Judy VanAcker, CoPLA
President
The CoPLA annual business (@ CAL) meeting
drew quite a crowd. New officers were introduced as
follows. Past President- Janine Reid; President - Judy
Van Acker (that would be me); Vice President - Claudine
Perrault; and Secretary - Luci Reimer.
At the meeting we asked the CoPLA members
these questions:
•What do you see as the greatest challenge at your
library?
•What are you hearing that is exciting or daunting in
libraryland?
We produced quite a list. Thank you! At the next CoPLA
board meeting your suggestions will be used to create
goals for 2009.
If you couldn't make the meeting you can access
the CoPLA Web site :
http://www.cal-webs.org/associations3.html
and email us your thoughts. Or, you can hunt us down
at ALA Midwinter and chat with us there.
Speaking of ALA Midwinter, don't' miss the
pre-conference entitled "The Transformational Powers of
the Library: Ensuring the Future of Your Library"
produced by CAL. What a great way to start off the year
by listening to the results of a fascinating study
(conducted by OCLC), and then having a spirited
discussion afterwards! You just may come up with some
novel New Year Resolutions. See you there!
The interest group was formed to:
•explore new ways of doing digital outreach, networking
and public relations in order to promote Colorado and its
libraries (including but not limited to academic, public,
special, and school) on the virtual world of Second Life
•build a Colorado Association of Libraries presence on
Second Life through a new virtual library that will
represent the combined efforts of the Colorado libraries
and their library staff.
This new library, the "Sustainable Living Library"
on the sim Emerald City, will represent best practices for
living an ecologically conscious life.
Through virtual workshops, conferences, and
links to "green Web sites", the community of Second
Life, as well as real life patrons, will learn more about
their environment and how to save it.
The "Sustainable Living Library" will make
available to the community of Second Life the online
public access catalogs of Colorado libraries associated
with this new library and any programs or activities that
promote Colorado, its libraries, or CAL.
