CLEF Auction Raises Over $4,000 for Scholarships! By Martin Garnar, CLEF Chair/CAL Past-President The inaugural Events and Services Auction to raise money for the Colorado Library Educational Foundation (CLEF) was a huge success. The silent auction was held at this year’s CAL conference and included donations of professional education classes, room painting, knitwear, social events, and a host of other events and services. The winning bids were announced at the conference’s closing reception, along with the total amount raised: $4,090! This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without three elements: the bidders, the donors, and the auction coordinator. First, thanks to all the bidders who were willing to support their colleagues by purchasing these events and services. If you haven’t sent your check to the CAL office for your winning bid, please do so at your earliest convenience. Second, thanks to all the donors who came up with these creative items, and who were willing to give their time and talents to make it all possible. Finally, thanks to Diane Ellsworth of Colorado State University for coordinating the donations and running the auction during the conference -- without her organizational skills, our first attempt would not have run as smoothly. Thanks also to Kathleen Noland for office support and creating the Web donation forms. Based on this year’s success, we will be making this a tradition for the foreseeable future, so it’s never too early to start thinking of what you can donate for the 2009 auction! In keeping with CLEF’s mission, these funds will be used to provide scholarships for attending the annual CAL conference. However, since we have raised more money than we’ve had in a long time, we may be able to expand our support to include other CAL events, such as our spring workshops and Durango Days. Watch the CAL newsletter and your e-mail for more information on how CLEF can help you! # Boulder Bus Tour at ALA Midwinter Join a small group of colleagues on a chartered bus to Boulder and the beautiful University of Colorado campus and Norlin Library. We plan to show you why Boulder is so special! This tour is limited to 25 participants. It takes place Friday, January 23: Bus departs from the Convention Center by the Blue Bear at 12:30 p.m. and returns by 5:30 p.m. Cost is $20/person. To register or for more details, please go to: http://cal-webs.org # 4 ALA Councilor Report by Shelley Walchak, CAL’s ALA Chapter Councilor It won’t be long before ALA Midwinter will be in Denver (January 23-28.) A hard-working team of folks has put together numerous activities as the host state. Included are a pre-conference on January 23rd entitled, “The Transformational Powers of the Library: Ensuring the Future of Your Library.” There are only a few seats left and registration now needs to be done by snail mail or fax to ALA. Next we have a fabulous booth display with a revolving slide show of Colorado libraries and services plus free giveaways and a place to network with your Colorado buddies. The booth is a collaborative project with Denver Public Library. We have also planned a great trip to Boulder on Friday afternoon, from 12:30 – 5:30 for $20. Next, we have a great reception planned for Camila Alire, ALA-President-elect, on Sunday, January 25 from 7:30 – 9:00 at the Blair-Caldwell Branch of the Denver Public Library. It will also be good to see all the CAL Leadership members on the day before midwinter at the Grant Humphries Mansion in Denver. Other exciting news is that our “Capwiz” site is now up and working. This software allows CAL and ALA to reach out to Coloradans who are willing to contact their legislators about important library issues. SLIG had its first meeting in early December in Second Life. It will be meeting at the Sustainable Living Library on the Emerald City sim.
