Director/Producer Rosser Goodman was once mentioned
in The Hollywood Reporter as one of the Five in Focus
film directors to watch. With the release of her latest
film, Love or Whatever, she gives audiences a new
romantic comedy with the universal theme of finding love,
which all audiences can relate to regardless of the main
character’s sexual orientation.
Rosser’s previous films have not only
had national and foreign distribution
through companies like The Sundance
Film Channel, PBS, HERE! TV, among
others, but they have also acquired a
number of accolades from various film
festivals around the world. There is no
surprise that she didn’t shy away from
finding a universal story with a fringe
audience element. She was looking for
a gay script and found the right one
on InkTip. “We knew we were not
looking for coming out stories, gay
weddings, or babies. There are a ton
of these types of movies flooding the
gay market already,” she stated. Love
or Whatever was written by successful
playwright and author Dennis Bush.
Rosser found the script “fun, witty,
original, sweet, and charming.” She
also knew portraying a bi-sexual storyline
in a gay film was something she
was interested in, and Dennis’s script
had it covered.
The film focuses on Corey, a neurotic
therapist whose life seems perfect on
paper: a successful career and a hot
boyfriend. But when his boyfriend, Jon,
dumps him for a woman, Corey’s wild
journey of self-discovery leads him to a
GRINDR connection, Pete, and a lifechanging
choice: Love or Whatever.
Dennis did a rewrite and polish based
on casting ideas, location changes, and
other elements. Rosser said that Dennis
was “absolutely charming, a good person
and a very, very hard worker.”
After he completed his contract, Rosser
brought in screenwriter Cait Brennan
for some rewrites. “We found Caitie
through a friend and she was the perfect
match for Dennis’ script,” said
Rosser. “In subsequent drafts we integrated
a lesbian sub-storyline by making
Corey’s sister gay and quite promiscuous.
Again, one of the goals of the
film was to be as inclusive as possible
so the film could reach wider queer
audiences. GRINDR entered the picture
soon after producer Gio Messale joined
the team.” The film was produced by
Rosser’s company, KGB FILMS, in
association with Gime Productions. In
addition to directing the feature, Rosser
also produced the script with Gio and
Camillia Monet.
The film stars Tyler Poelle (Dose of
Reality; Scavengers; Skid Marks),
Jennifer Elise Cox (The Brady Bunch
Movie; A Very Brady Sequel), Joel
Rush (Days of Our Lives; Off Their

background in theater, which defines
her as an actor’s director, helped
capture the performances she needed.
However, it was her experience as
a first assistant director on projects
for J.J. Abrams, Universal, Disney,
Paramount, Dreamworks, HBO, MTV,
Dimension and Lionsgate that allowed
her to produce and direct a twelve-day
feature shoot. The short schedule was
the biggest hurdle for this production.
“Every single day was so stressful,”
Rosser said. “We wanted to shoot the
whole script and not just end up cutting
scene after scene because we ran
out of time. We did shoot the whole
screenplay; I think we only dropped
about two scenes. In the end, we had a
two-hour movie which we cut down to
90 minutes.”
One day was especially stressful for
Rosser. As the film shot in Griffith
Park, she hadn’t been able to secure a
location for the next three days. “So,
there I am shooting all day at Griffith
with a huge company move followed
by a mini-move and all daylight
dependent and no clue if we were

going to have to shut down production
and risk not finishing the film,” she
explained. “Surprisingly I was calm.
I think I just blocked out how dire our
situation was and chose to do the best
thing I could do, which was focus on
the shoot day we were in. Needless to
say, in the eleventh hour, a location was
miraculously found and we got to keep
shooting! … I think the abundance of
good luck we had stood out to me the
most. We had very little money and
very little time, but we kicked ass. So,
I guess to be specific, it was the strong
spirit of our cast and crew. The cast
especially had a synergy that exceeded
my expectations. They each loved the
script. And the whole cast was just so
naturally funny.”

When asked, Rosser didn’t hesitate
to state that her heart lies with directing.
“I love working with the actors
and all that they bring, setting up the
shots and camera moves – for me it’s
where a lot of the magic happens.” But
there are perks to producing your own
film. One aspect of pre-production that
Rosser cherished was being able to
develop the script versus being handed
90 pages and told to go shoot it.
Love or Whatever is already in film
festivals across the country and soon
internationally. The distribution is
a hybrid model that will maximize
revenue from various platforms like
festivals, DVD, VOD, digital, and theatrical.
With marketing for the film
underway, Rosser is turning her attention
to her next project. She is currently
looking for limited-location, ensemble
horror/thrillers with a strong female
lead. But she doesn’t want the same
plot that’s been circulating for years.
Her advice to screenwriters is, “[do]
the unexpected, don’t tell tired old
stories that have been made a thousand
times. Go out on a limb and do what no
one has done before.
“[I] love everyone over at InkTip and

Playwright Dennis Bush has had a strong career in the
theater. He has had 19 plays and eight monologue
collections published, worked as a coach for actors and
writers, has had a number of his stage plays produced
throughout numerous countries, including the U.S.,
Canada, South Africa, and the U.K., and his recent
plays Like a Man and In the Sack are gearing up for
a commercial run in New York. Now Dennis can add
produced screenwriter to his extensive credits. His
romantic comedy Love or Whatever was discovered on
InkTip by producer/director Rosser Goodman. We had a
chance to talk to Dennis about his inspiration for the script
and what works he has planned for the future.

InkTip: You write stage plays, short
stories, scripts, all kinds of work.
When it comes to screenwriting, do
you prefer to write one style of genre
over another?
Dennis Bush: In all my writing (plays,
screenplays, short fiction, poetry), I
work in a variety of styles and genres.
Each project has a different feel. I’m
drawn to the place where comedy
and tragedy intersect. Audiences may
think they “know” a writer based on
one script or screenplay, but that’s
like saying you know somebody after
a five-minute conversation at party.
I want my work to appeal to a wide
range of people with a variety of life
experiences.
InkTip: Love or Whatever revolves
around a gay man’s quest for romance.
How do you think the story will relate
to all audiences?
Dennis Bush: I wanted to blend
romance and comedy in that way that
so often happens in real life – once we
have some distance from it and can see
the seemingly tragic moments for the
funny and absurd experiences that they
were. I wanted Corey to be someone
both men and women could relate to.
While Corey’s sexual orientation is
gay, I think his struggle to find love
and direction in his life can – and will
– resonate with all kinds of audiences.
InkTip: How did you come up with
the story?
Dennis Bush: I wanted to create a
romantic comedy that explored how
being open to new and different people
can lead us to love. We get so mired
in ideas of “my type” and “what I’m
into” that we miss having life-changing
experiences and relationships with
incredible people.
InkTip: The script was given to Cait
Brennan for a rewrite. Some writers
get nervous when another writer is
brought in to do a pass on their script.
How did the process go for you and did
you like the changes that were made?
Dennis Bush: My contract included
one rewrite and one polish, which I
completed, based on casting ideas,
location changes, and incorporating
a marketing partner’s app as part of
the plot. As the development process
moved forward, I was at work on
several other projects (as happens in
the business), along with my coaching
and consulting commitments. Rosser
and I talked, at length, about ideas for
additional changes. Bringing Cait on
board was just like adding some wonderful
new spices to the recipe that was
already in place. We work in a collaborative
business, and Rosser and producer
Gio Messale have been wonderful
about making sure that everyone’s
contributions have been included, recognized,
and celebrated.
InkTip: Were you excited by the casting
and other elements for the film?
Dennis Bush: I’m very pleased.
Casting director Steve Maisel did an
outstanding job. Tyler Poelle, who
plays Corey, is wonderful. All the lead
and featured actors do excellent work,
but Tyler has such a broad range of
emotions to play as Corey, and he does
it superbly.
InkTip: Have you been able to see it
yet?
Dennis Bush: I saw the film at the
world premiere at the Frameline festival
in San Francisco on June 20th.
Rosser has done a beautiful job. All
the production elements are very well
done. Rosser, Gio, and Camillia Sanes
Monet (another one of the producers)
put together an exceptional team and
everyone brought their A game to the
project. For the premiere, we had a full
house at the historic Castro Theatre
and the audience response was overwhelming.
There was so much enthusiasm.
Frameline is such an exceptional
organization and the audiences at the
Castro are passionate and engaged. It
was an incredible experience.
InkTip: What advice can you give
other writers who are trying to get their
foot in the door?
Dennis Bush: Write, write, write.
Don’t wait for your work to be “discovered.”
Put it out there. And gather a
group of honest friends and colleagues
who can read your work and give you
feedback as you’re writing.

Dennis Bush: I’m working on a new
screenplay, Tristan, about a boy who
has to figure out how to handle an
abusive situation, when no one around
him seems to be able – or want – to
help. I’m working on a collaboration
with award-winning director Matt
MacDonald. On the theatre side, I’m
completing a comedy/drama, Civilized
People, about a sister and brother in
their 20s who are faced with the fallout
of the events of their childhood and
teen years. I’m also working on a new
one-act called Opening Doors. In addition,
I continue to coach other writers
and work with actors, as well.
InkTip: Anything you would like to
