Bury St Edmunds is an historic
market town, the main
town in the borough of St
Edmundsbury, with many fi ne
strengths, including natural,
historic and architectural
attractions. The most notable
of these is the ruined Abbey,
a shrine to Saint Edmund,
Saxon King of the East Angles
and patron saint of England.
In 1214 the barons of England
met in the Abbey and swore
that they would force King
John to accept the Charter of
Liberties, later known as the
Magna Carta.
