AIDS and 11 HIV negative) were studied with mycological<br />
evidence of cryptococcosis (1997 through 2002). In both<br />
groups, the frequency of clinical signs and symptoms were<br />
similar except for neurological signs, which prevailed in<br />
AIDS patients. Curiously, the HIV- negative patients did<br />
not had an obvious predisposing illness and they had a<br />
normal CD4/CD8 ratio. Cryptococcus neoformans infection<br />
was found to be the initial AIDS - defining illness in<br />
45.8% of the AIDS patients. Thirty three percent (7 of 21)<br />
of the HIV + infected patients died in the first 2 weeks of<br />
