“Thank you very much for the perfect working new
B4 racing machine. Believe me, this is the best boat
that I have sailed in my life.”
Andre Budzien - GER 711
“ - bearing in mind that I've not been in a Finn for a
couple of years and weigh more than 110 kg, I was
extremely surprised to feel so fast off the wind. Please
send me your spec. sheets and build schedule so that
I can place an order.”
John Greenwood - GBR 5
“Thank you for my new B4 Finn. I was very impressed
with the complete, ready to sail package, including
the Pata Willetts mast and especially with the high
build quality. My first serious event was the UK Finn
Masters and with the impressive speed to windward
and blistering downwind speed, I was able to finish
1st Grand Master.”
FINNFARE AUGUST 2006
President’s Letter
Dear Finn Sailors
Subsequent to the November 2005 IFA
Executive Committee (EC) meeting – which
followed on from the September 2005
Moscow EC meeting – a draft strategic plan,
‘Finn 2008’ was compiled by the EC and
circulated to various stakeholders of the
Finn sailing world.
Unfortunately there has been only limited
response from the addressees which makes the contribution of Corinne
Roland-McKenzie, Michele Marchesini, Tim Carver, Robert Deaves
and Andreas Bollongino even more valuable.
Based on these contributions, a strategic plan has been finalised in
December 2006.
The report prepared for the 2006 AGM in Split follows the structure of
the strategic plan and summarises the achievements of year 2005/2006
based on the tasks set out in the plan. My comments are PRINTED
IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
This is too lengthy to reproduce in FINNFARE, so you can view it in
its entirety on the IFA website at:
Technical Committee Chairman’s Report
for June 2006
The hull lines have now been prepared in digital
form by Gilbert Lamboley, who has carefully
compared these standards (first worked out in
1974) with earlier versions, and has found a
good correlation. He has added faired figures
for the non-measurement sections at Stations
1,3,5 and 7, to assist builders. The lines should
be on our website very shortly.
In-House certification
One reason for the introduction of ‘Standard
Class Rules’ (we have already adopted this
format) was to facilitate ‘In-House Certification’.
At present we require that masts and sails be
measured before leaving the manufacturer, but
the measurer normally is an independent
outside person. The idea of IHC is that a
manufacturer may be allowed to have an ISAF
‘Internal Official Measurer’ on his staff, which
should make life easier for everybody. The
scheme would be closely monitored by ISAF.
We request authority to make detail changes
to our rule wording, to align with the SCR
wording concerning IHC (which is not yet
finalised). We also request authority for the
Executive (guided by TC) to accept IHC
proposals made by manufacturers to ISAF,
when this is considered best in the interests of
the Class. (The arrangement is an agreement
between the manufacturer and ISAF, who need
the Class to have suitable rules and to accept
the proposal). We expect that several sail
makers and mast builders may seek approval,
and we also want to extend the arrangements
to include booms, rudders and eventually hulls.
A Rule change proposal
When re-wording the class rules to SCR
Format, we did not seek or receive authority
to change the meaning of the rules, except for
tightening up the rule about the shape of the
centreplate. Now that we have got the big
change behind us, we can all see that it would
be a help to standardise the positions and
diameters of the rudder and transom pintles
and gudgeons. The standard suggested would
fit Existing Pata and Devoti boats, but the rule
would not be retrospective.
If this rule were adopted, a rudder manufacturer
could produce a fully completed rudder for
export, ready for any boat, making IHC
practicable for rudders.
People
It is likely that Jüri Saraskin will want to retire
as Chief Measurer after 2008. Many of you will
have met John Driscoll on the water, and he
has started a programme of ISAF measurer
training and of attending regattas with Jüri, so
that he should be suitably qualified to seek
election in due course.
I plan to retire as TC Chairman by November
2008, and again we need continuity. Anybody
interested in this position should let the
Executive know immediately, so that he/she
can be helped to become familiar with the
political environment!
I should like to thank various members of the
TC for their help during the year, and to
congratulate Gilbert Lamboley on the
completion of verification and digital recording
of the lines. Robert Deaves is placing this and
other material (such as old construction
drawings) on our website.
I hope that Council will approve re-election of
the TC, with the addition of John Driscoll.
With 233 pre-entries from 21
countries, the 2006 Finn World
Masters looked set to be the largest
event ever. In the end a mere 184
boats made it as far as registration.
Two courses were sailed on Lake
Balaton with Michael Maier picking
up his first world title, while Andre
Budzien had to settle for second
place for the fourth year running. In
third place and making it a European
1, 2, 3 was Michael Gubi.
Day 1
The first day started in a strong northerly
breeze. PRO Istvan Hantó sent the fleet afloat
and at 10:00 hours fired the starting gun for
the first race of the championship. The fleet
was divided into two groups with John
Greenwood, Andre Budzien and Michael
Maier winning races. Maier, member of the
+39 America’s Cup Team, had a successful
day winning two races in a row.
6
Finn World Masters 2006 – Lake Balaton, Hungary
Day 2
Only one race was sailed on Tuesday. The
day started with a postponement as the wind
developed slowly from the south-west. After
noon the fleet were sent out, and started in
two different groups. The wind started to
change direction to the south and the Race
Committee matched this with a course
change, but on the last leg the wind shifted
the other way by 90° because of a storm
system. This resulted in large place changes
throughout the fleet.
André Budzien won the first group while the
winner of the second group was unclear for
long since the two groups started five minutes
after each other and became mixed on the
course and on the finishing vessel. Later it
became clear that Szilvássy Attila, competitor
in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, who
sailed in the middle of his group won the race
with extraordinary tactics. Overnight, Michael
Maier still led the fleet after a second place
while André Budzien was just one point
behind.
Day 3
Was cancelled because of the lack of wind.
Day 4
The wind had returned and the first group
started without problems. The second start
only got away on the second attempt. The
wind then started to shift to the east
suddenly, and a course change became
necessary. This affected the first group
mostly, Székely Antal was the most lucky
– tenth at the first leeward mark – he finally
won the race. Loser in the situation was
Szilvássy Attila, who had 2, 22 and 1 places
overall and was leading the fleet at Mark
1 and if he could have kept his place he
would have led the fleet overall.
Unfortunately after the wind shift he had
dropped to 8th place. At the end of the
race the wind had dropped so much that
the Race Committee decided to end the
race for the second group in the downwind
section.
The overall leader Michal Maier finished
4th, and his rival André Budzien in the
other group finished 3rd so Maier kept his
one point lead.
Day 5
The championship came to a disappointing
finish but with a worthy winner. Because
of the lack of wind, there wasn’t any racing
on the Friday. At 2 pm the organiser, Istvan
Hantó closed the regatta: four races sailed
with one discard.
So Michael Maier takes away the cup for
the first time while André Budzien has to
settle for the runner’s up prize for the fourth
year in a row. Michael Gubi repeated his
bronze medal success of 2004.
Finn Gold Cup 2006 – Split, Croatia
The 50th Finn Gold Cup was held
from 8-16 July in the picturesque
Adriatic port of Split in Croatia. After
the Europeans in 1997 and the
Masters in 2002, in 2006 it was the
turn of the Gold Cup to complete the
hat-trick of major Finn championships.
Report by Corinne Rolland-McKenzie.
Photos by JK Labud.
There were 99 sailors from 30 countries taking
part and with Ben Ainslie committed to training
ETNZ, and no previous winners taking part,
a new world champion was guaranteed by
the end of the week. Racing got underway
on the Tuesday after three days of
measurement and then the opening ceremony
on Monday evening.
Races 1 and 2
Two good races were held on the first day
thanks to fair wind and experienced racing
management. Ed Wright took the first honours
by convincingly winning the first race. After
a clear start, the Brit increased his lead to
150 meters by the finish. Jonas Hoegh-
Christensen placed second in front of Dan
Slater and Emilios Papathanasiou. The wind
increased to 18 knots for the second race
and the racing committee hoisted the Oscar
flag allowing free pumping. Sharing the lead
with Rafael during the whole race, Emilios
tricked the Spaniard on the last run to win
the race. Rafael took second place with +39
team mate Iain Percy in third. Percy, now
campaigning in the Star class, had been
training hard in the Finn while in Valencia
with +39 sailors. He admitted it is just for fun:
‘I just wanted to come with the guys (+39)
and enjoy myself in the Finn again. But
actually there is not one muscle in my body
that’s not hurting!’
Three British sailors were leading the Junior
division with Mark Andrews in 26th position,
leading his team mates Andrew Mills and
Henry Bagnall. The 16 Juniors in contention
for the Jorg Bruder Silver Cup, were
competing in the same fleet as the seniors
and represented nine countries.
Race 3
The start of the third race was delayed by
two hours on the water. After two general
recalls, the third start got away although Dan
Slater and local hope Ivan Klakovitch Gaspic
collected a disqualification.
Trujillo won the race enjoying the increasing
breeze and displaying his usual strength
upwind in the strong conditions. Starting at
10 knots, the wind increased to 18 knots and
after a very good start, Trujillo was among
the leaders with Daniel Birgmark and Jonas.
Rafael capitalised his lead on the second
upwind and rounded the windward mark with
a one minute lead to win the race in front of
Jonas. His second place took the world
number one ranked sailor to the top of the
fleet overnight.
Race 4
It was a difficult day on the water. The wind
came from every direction and the racing
was postponed until 3 pm. After two general
recalls, race 4 started in 15 knots with Rafael
repeating his tactics to favour the right of the
beat to lead round the top mark ahead of
Edward Wright who got just as much breeze
on the left while Waclav Szukiel got to the
top mark in third after sailing up the middle.
With the wind decreasing the committee
shortened the course and set the finish at
the end of the second beat. The top three
remained the same while Florian Raudaschl
took fourth place.
FINNFARE AUGUST 2006 11

The second race was cancelled after the wind
took a 100° shift on the second upwind leg.
Iain Percy was leading with Jonas in second
at the time.
Mark Andrews was still leading the 16 junior
fleet in 23rd place overall. Henry Bagnall has
climbed up the overall ranking in 37th place
after scoring a 25th. Third placed Junior was
Krysztof Dabkowski in 50th position.
Races 5 and 6
Perfect conditions provided two good races
in a strengthening westerly wind. After a
general recall, the race was started in a stable
10 knots on a windward return course. Jonas
notched up his first win followed over the
finish line by Emilios, Ed Wright and Percy.
The wind increased to 18 knots for the second
race, and the committee set a triangle and
upwind finish. Jonas was first at the top mark
but lost his lead to finish third. “I had a good
start on the left then I covered the fleet in the
middle. I didn’t want to go too far on one side
with so many boats. I was leading at the
windward mark but then I couldn’t find the
mark and lost my usual rhythm downwind.”
Peter-Jan Postma from Holland passed the
wing mark in front but could not keep Trujillo
behind. The Spaniard passed him at the
leeward mark and kept his position until the
finish where he collected his third bullet.
Peter-Jan Postma managed to stay in second
place.
Race 7
The Bura, a Northerly capricious wind came
on Saturday to add some excitement to the
crucial penultimate race. Renowned for being
shifty and inconstant the local wind from the
mountain delayed racing until 5pm.
12
Sailors from
Split had
probably been
waiting for the
Bura all week
and the results
proved that the
locals and their
training partners
made the most
of this tricky
wind.
Nicknamed
Bambi, Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic, current
European and World Junior Champion,
mastered the conditions to win his first World
Championship race. Tapio Nirkko threatened
the young Croatian on the run where they
shared the lead but not for long, although
they stayed ahead of the fleet.
Among the favourites for the title, Emilios
third was across the line and Ed Wright
seventh in the difficult conditions. Meanwhile,
Jonas and Rafael followed each other across
the finish in 33rd and 34th place. “I would
have had more chance playing the lottery,”
declared the regatta leader.
Going in to the last day, Jonas and Rafael
were only five points apart in first and second.
Emilios was three points behind while Ed
Wright, the only one among the top four with
no bad race, could also win the title.
Race 8
On the final day, Jonas proved that he really
is the number one Finn sailor in the World by
winning the 50th Finn Gold Cup. He won by
just three points from Emilios. The Greek
won the last race but this was not enough.
The Bronze medal went to Ed Wright who
raced a very constant regatta scoring only
top 10 results, with a second in the last race.
Ed Wright has made a rapid progression after
stepping from the Laser to the Finn last year.
Also coming from the Laser is Daniel Birgmark
who finished 4th after coming 7th in the last
race.
Rafael Trujillo was probably the fastest sailor
in this regatta, the early leader won three
races in the championship but the Bura wind
proved fatal for him.
The best Croatian was race 8 winner, Ivan
Kljakovic Gaspic in 8th position. He passed
on the Jorg Bruder Silver Cup to the new
Junior World Champion, Mark Andrews.
Second Junior was Henry Bagnall also from
Great Britain. The third Junior was fought for
very hard all week. After a very slow start to
the Championship, Piotr Kula finished third
by overtaking his teammates Krzysztof
Dabkowski and Piotr Mazur by a few points.
The Finn class is thankful to the Labud Yacht
Club and the Grisogono brothers who have
provided the Finn sailors with a great
championship.
Thirty years ago...
It might be interesting to see who were the main contenders for the
Gold Cup 30 years ago in 1976, and the Olympics later that year.
Chris Law took out the windy Gold Cup in Manly, Australia in fine
style, but failed to qualify for Kingston. There, the East German
Jochen Schümann narrowly won gold. Third in both events was the
great John Bertrand. As these excerpts from FINNFARE show, the
results from Manly reveal a relatively youthful Gus Miller in 21st.
ITALY
Finn sailing from across the world
Coppa Italia
More than 80 Italian Finn sailors participated
in the first five events of the Coppa Italia
2006, with 21 races completed and great fun
for everybody. These races were also valid
as selection for the 2006 Finn Gold Cup and
Europeans.
The first event was in Anzio, where the first
three races were sailed with a nice southerly
and big waves. The final race instead was in
light winds. Riccardo Cordovani convincingly
came first overall, even without sailing the
last race. Second was Emanuele Vaccari,
back in the Finn after ten years (he was the
Italian representative in Barcelona in 1992).
The second event was the Stuffer Vitessa
Trophy in Caldaro Lake, where as usual many
sailors from Germany and Austria were
present. The 2005 World Master champion
Silvio Santoni performed as expected and
came first overall in front of Florian Raudaschl
from Austria.
The following week there was another event
in Torbole on Garda Lake. The first day the
Ora filled in later and lighter than usual and
only one race was sailed. The second day of
racing began very early with a strong northerly
wind and two very long races. When the wind
dropped the race committee sent the fleet
ashore waiting for the Ora to fill in. There was
not much to wait until the third race of the
day, which was sailed in the classical Garda
conditions. Silvio was again first overall, with
Riccardo Cordovani in second and Giorgio
Poggi in third.
The following event took place in Castiglione
della Pescaia at the end of May. Five races
were sailed in two days, with light winds the
first day and a strong southerly on the second
day. The event was dominated by Giorgio
Poggi, at his first year in the Finn and rapidly
improving his performances, followed by the
Junior Marko Kolic and Silvio Santoni.
The first weekend of July the fleet went to
Pesaro for the last event before the Summer
holidays. Five races were sailed in light wind
conditions, and Marco Buglielli came first
overall, followed by Riccardo Cordovani and
Simone Mancini.
The next events of Coppa Italia 2006 will take
place in Livorno (9-10 September) and in
Malcesine with the traditional Finn Cup in
October.
Trofeo LNI Challenge - Follonica
In March the first edition of the LNI Challenge
Trophy was sailed in Follonica. The event
was very well organised by Mauro Merlini
and will possibly become the season opening
regatta in Italy. This year 20 Finns were
present, and Marco Buglielli convincingly won
Championnat de France Senior
Mark Ribet wrote, “This very specific and fun
Waiuku Finn Veterans Champs Celebrates
21 Years
Waiuku Yacht Club celebrated 21 years of
hosting the Black Heart Finn Veterans
Championships from 30 March to 2 April
2006.
The event was generously sponsored by
Black Heart Rum and Monty’s Mowers.
Consequently plenty of the sponsor’s product
was consumed over the weekend.
Winner David Hoogenboom shows his
downwind form in the Black Heart Waiuku
Finn Masters.
Wind proved to be a scarce commodity
unfortunately with Saturday being the only
day where a full four races could be sailed.
On Thursday two races were sailed until the
wind disappeared. Being sponsored by a rum
supplier a harbour rum race was held on
Friday with all sailors racing through The
Needles towards Clarkes Beach and back.
This race was won by Finn sailing stalwart
and regatta organiser, John Duff.
four days of regattas. No doubt this knowhow
and the great location will make CV
Bordeaux one of the prime candidates for
the Masters in 2009. 37 Finns entered the
championship, and in mostly light and
changing winds Laurent Hay took an early
lead to be the clear winner after nine races.
The young and rising star Pierre Mondeteguy
followed, with Luc Cholet taking third place.
Please note the next major french regatta is
‘L’Armistice’, which will be held at Hourtin
early November.”
Athough the rain was gladly received by many
on Sunday, the forecast wind did not arrive
and after floating around in the rain for two
hours the race committee abandoned and
the regatta concluded with seven races sailed.
After seven races the lead was tied between
David Hoogenboom and Allan Dawson with
David Hoogenboom being awarded first place
on countback. John Duff took out third place.
Overall, the regatta ran very smoothly and
professionally through all the hard work and
organisation of the club, and race officials.
All the sailors look forward to sailing this
regatta for many years to come and to the
hospitality of the host club.
NEW! C-Tech Finn Mast
The New Zealand Finn Association has been
working with C-Tech to develop a well priced
competitive Finn Mast to provide a ready
supply of new and replacement masts. C-
Tech were chosen based on their work
developing masts for the OK Dinghy which
are now the dominant mast used by the OK
fleet around the world.
The C-Tech masts have been engineered
from the ground up using desired Finn mast
bend characteristics as the benchmark and
provide the performance of a Wing mast at
the price of a round mast.
The C-Tech mast is available in 5 weight
breaks to suit each Finn sailors requirement.
These 5 weight breaks are 70 Kg, 80 Kg, 90
Kg, 100 Kg and 110 Kg. Mast bend graphs
are available on request or alternatively Finn
sailors can provide their required target
numbers. By adopting this philosophy
production costs have been kept to a
minimum and so the end price is very
competitive compared to other available
masts.
As stated above the masts are round and
manufactured on a male mandrel using high
quality carbon materials. The mast track is
fabricated separately with an aerodynamic
shape and bonded to the mast tube.
Workmanship is excellent and the end product
is finished with a clear gloss coating. The
mast comes complete with deck ring bearing,
gooseneck, mast base bearing, halyard pulley
and halyard jam cleat. The halyard is internal.
A test mast was used at the 2006 NZ Finn
Nationals coming 6th overall with a best result
of 3rd in one race beating a number of wing
masts. The mast was also used to win the
2006 Waiuku Finn Veterans Champs.
Enquiries about the mast should be directed
to the NZ Finn Association on
NZFinnMasts@xtra.co.nz or contact David
Hoogenboom on Ph +64 9 8133445 or Fax
2006 Cup of Spain
Victor Serrano (ESP 260) writes: “Once more,
this traditional race was ran in Entrepenas,
near Madrid, from the 29th of April to the 1st
of May, and 14 Finns with light and changing
winds made it really difficult to maintain the
position within the fleet.
THE NETHERLANDS
Finnale 2006
On May 13 and 14 the Finnale was sailed.
Having been held for 41 years, the Finnale
is one of the oldest Dutch Finn events. A new
beautiful location in Monnickendam on the
Gouwzee and good dates attracted almost
40 sailors, including two foreign guests, Chris
Cook from Canada and Aaron O’Grady from
Ireland. In the future, the Finnale can be seen
as a valuable warming up for Finn sailors
who plan to come to
Monnickendam/Gouwzee directly after the
Semaine Olympic in Hyéres and want to sail
the Holland Regatta at Medemblik afterwards.
Both locations are less than 30 kilometres
apart.
