SEPTEMBER 2009
With the arrival of September, our Sunset
Series comes to an end. But there will
be one more chance for the top boats in
each class to compete as we hold the King of the
Hill Regatta on September 9. Overall, we had
good participation in the many classes. The race
committee, headed by R/C Ann Ach, should be
proud of their efforts in running the many Sunset
Series races. Also, our racing calendar for August
included the Martin 242 North Americans, which
was chaired by Marylyn Hoenemeyer.
Twenty-four boats vied for the trophy, and all
participants enjoyed the facilities and fine
hospitality for which our Club has become known.
As football season approaches, we are reminded what
great fall weather we usually have in Southern California.
Catalina is normally a terrific destination for our shorter
cruises, and certainly one would not want to miss the First
Mates Cruise starting September 11. This event is being
presented by our own “MASH Unit” of the CYCWA. I know
that “Hot Lips Houlihan” is just waiting to plant that big one
on your cheeks.
Our luncheon/dinner guest speaker programs this year
have been well attended for the most part and will continue
through November. One change coming up in October is that
the Commodore’s Alaska Adventure Dinner Presentation will
be held on October 14, a Wednesday, instead of our usual
Thursday presentation. Also, V/C Tom O’Conor will give his
What a great summer
we’ve had! Terrific
parties, well-run regattas,
outstanding Junior sailing program,
and wonderful cruises to Ballast
Point. Fortunately, with September
the fun doesn’t stop. Cochairmen
SEO Norma Pratt, SEO Tracey
Thiras, and Natalya Wheatman
have planned an outstanding First
Mates Cruise (Sept. 11-13)
honoring CYCWA Executive
Officer Karen Stirling. With
M.A.S.H. as its theme, they have a
menu, decorations, and program
that will keep you entertained
around the clock. Come dressed as
your favorite character and be
prepared to “play doctor.” If you have room on your boat for
another member who may want to attend, please let the front
desk know so that everyone who wants to attend has a place to
bunk. You will find the menu and schedule of events on our
CYC Web site.
The Wine Appreciation Society has another Wine Expo on
Friday, September 25. Join us on the front lawn to sample wine
from Spain and Spanish varietals produced here in California.
We will be preparing paella, grilling chorizo, and offering
presentation for the 2010 Commodores Cruise on
Thursday, October 22. Thanks again go to S/C
Martin McCarthy and R/C Ann Ach for
organizing these very informative programs.
Our Junior Summer Program ended in
August and is to be applauded for the
professional way this program was handled.
Carrie Dair puts forth an incredible effort in
procuring coaches who will work with the kids
and teach the seamanship and camaraderie that is
needed to enjoy this wonderful sport. Of
course, safety at sea is very important and our
staff always puts this in front of everything
taught. I know our Club is very gratified to see the progression
each year, as these sailors continue to grow and compete in
other programs around the country.
CYC hosted a very important presentation, a Boating
Town Hall Meeting, featuring California Assembly Member
Ted Lieu, who represents our area. Many other local
government officials attended, as Assembly Bill 166
(abandoned vessels) and other important issues were discussed.
Our Club is always in the forefront in lending its support to the
many challenges recreational boaters face on a daily basis.
Special thanks go to S/C Anne Sacks, for the tireless effort she
puts forth in attending many of these meetings around
Southern California, plus trips to our State Capitol.
Again, please enjoy your Club and the lovely fall weather
we have for all the Club activities.
gazpacho shooters among other tasty treats to pair with dozens
of wines. Reservations are necessary as we want to prepare
enough food for everyone to enjoy.
Last month you received a form from our membership
representative, Claudia Moore asking you to update your
information for the roster. This is the vital first step in getting
an accurate roster out to the membership in a timely fashion. It
may seem early, but it takes months of preparation to make the
membership changes, write up the current trophy winners,
committee chairmen and policies, proof the galleys, design the
cover, and then finally print and bind the roster. After the roster
is printed, it goes to a mailing center where it takes another
three weeks to process to get to your mailbox. If all goes
according to plan, you will receive your roster by the first week
of the new year. So if you still have that roster information card
sitting on your desk, please fill it out and return it. We want
everyone’s information to be current.
Another area where we need your help is in keeping our
dock office files up to date. All slip holders must provide
current registration and insurance documentation as part of
their slip agreement. When your documentation expires, the
dock office sends out a courtesy letter letting you know it’s
time to send us your current documentation. We ask that you
take the time while you’re at the club to drop this
documentation off to Rob Ward, our dock office administrative
assistant, so he can update your file.
See you around the Club!

SEPTEMBER 2009 BREEZE/3
The 2009 competition for
the King of Spain Trophy
came down to a duel on
the last downwind leg between
CYC’s Ben Mitchell and Hal
Haenel, and NHYC’s Jim
Buckingham with CYC crew
Rick Peters. Tied after four races
with six points each, the two
teams chose the far end of the
line to start. The lead changed
twice during the last race with
Ben Mitchell and Hal Haenel
jibing to lay the finish line some
20 feet- or seven seconds ahead
of Jim Buckingham and Rick
Peters after 6.2 miles of racing.
The regatta was sailed in
mostly sunny skies and eight to
nine knots of wind and good size
swells on Saturday and nine to 11
knots of wind on Sunday with the
normal Santa Monica Bay chop.
Following racing on Saturday, the
racers were treated by Rick Peters
to music by friends who played
on after the taco bar light supper.
Other trophies were awarded
to Leland Kellerhouse and Brian
Mahoney for 3rd place. Leland
also took home the “Super
Senior” award for the top finish
by a skipper over 60 years old.
Doug Steele and Tom Hulme
were runners up. Someone
commented, “The Super Senior
award should be renamed the
King of Pain.” The final trophy
was the top finisher in a Star boat
with hull number under 7000.
Tim Ray and Brian O’Mahoney
were called to the podium to
receive the award when it was
pointed out that Jorge Benedid
and his son were sailing hull
number 6883 but with sail
number 7997. So, both were
amenable to sharing the award –
everyone wins. So ended the
2009 chapter of the King of
Spain Regatta.
SEPTEMBER 2009 BREEZE/7
The 2009 version of the Catalina
Grill was a resounding success.
This year’s theme was “San
Francisco 1906 – From the Barbary
Coast to Nob Hill.” Our weekend started
on Thursday with Art and S/C Anne
Sacks, and S/C Bill Moore on board
Artana, and shortly thereafter yours truly
and Pam Spriggs on board White Star.
We were headed for Cat Harbor and our
Ballast Point facility loaded down with
gear for the weekend. After organizing
the deck and getting the barbecues ready
for action, 37 members and guests
enjoyed an impromptu evening with
everyone bringing their food for grilling.
With the arrival of the Owen Churchill,
skippered by Ty Olsen, Friday night’s
dinner included freshly made corn
chowder with salad and bread, and
members’ supplied steaks, sausages, fish,
chops, and anything else in the food
chain that was fit to barbecue. Stephanie
and CYC President Steve Hathaway
made us quesadillas on the grill for hors
d’ouevres. The evening’s entertainment was furnished by good friend Dave
Barrette, from 4th of July Cove,
featuring his terrific voice and
strumming on his 12-string guitar. Singa-long
and dancing accompanied Dave’s
musical efforts.
Saturday morning found the staff,
including General Manager Michele
Underwood, Assistant Manager Gus
Marks, and Catering Director Lorri
Wressell, hard at work organizing all the
gourmet-quality meals to be served that
day. Lunchtime arrived and a sunny day
added brightness to the fresh crab and
jumbo shrimp presented in an ice-filled
dinghy, along with various salads. It was
all served with fresh artisan boules of
olive and San Francisco style sourdough
breads on tables decorated with bright
red tablecloths and potted ferns. The
Commodore happily filled glass mugs,
from a keg of complimentary San
Francisco Anchor Steam Beer. A spirited
game of bingo, hosted by Budget Officer
Mary Kate Scott, soon had Steve
Hathaway straining to put on a smiling
face after he learned that the prize of a
Dave “Neil Diamond” Barrette
free month of CYC dues, was actually
Steve, always gracious, was proud to
present the winners their prize. Of
course, there were other fun prizes
awarded and everyone had a great time.
After some serious napping, boathopping
and Isthmus touring, the gang
showed up for cocktails and dinner. The
décor had changed to a more formal
black-and-white table setting including a
evening’s dinner menu included fresh
whole Norwegian salmon, along with a
tasty London broil with caramelized
onions, both grilled to perfection by
Michele and Gus. In addition, a Caesar
salad, fresh green beans, escalloped
potatoes, and French rolls completed
the meal, along with complimentary
Napa Valley wine. For dessert, Lori
brought out a warm blueberry cobbler
with plenty of whipped-cream
“schmooze” to go on top. After-dinner
activities included the partial showing
of the movie “San Francisco,” starring
Clark Gable, Jeanette McDonald and
Spencer Tracy. This gave our theme
credibility, since this black-and-white
gem from the thirties showed the
glamour and sorrow from the 1906
earthquake and fire that gutted the city,
including the Barbary Coast and Nob
Hill. Soon we were making our own
“earthquake” as the dancing kicked into
high gear with our own DJ, Scott
Jarema, entertaining us with a myriad of
popular dance music. Thanks to all of
the staff and volunteers who made this
cruise “earthshaking!”
The Power Fleet was busy in July burning up the waves!
First, thank you to Don Rothenberg, who brought out the red,
white, and blue in us on the 4th of July Dinghy Cruise, leading
the little boats to El Torito and then for a cruise around the
marina (see story on page 14). Then Randy Sprout contacted
dozens of members to get CYC fishermen out to help win the Cal
stay at Del Rey Yacht Club. (See story on page 13).
LELAND CUP AND ABEL TROPHY
On Saturday, July 11, the SMBPF Leland Cup sponsored by
CYC, and Abel Trophy sponsored by DRYC, were held in Santa
unusual current. The air was hot! For the Leland Trophy, Herb
Dover came in first place on Coastwatcher. The DRYC team of
Lurie-Livingston on Exodus II came in 2nd. For the Abel Trophy,
Bernie Blockhus was first, Del Rey YC got second, Herb Dover
was 3rd, and Dave Lewis 4th.
CYC-MdR
Fishing Challenge
hosted by the
Power Fleet
By DAWN SPROUT
It’s back – it’s really back! The CYC-
MdR Yacht Club fishing trophy has come
back to CYC. Former CYC member
Christian Schoch won with a 4-lb. 10-oz.
halibut caught off the transom of Randy
Sprout’s Fortuna in the last 30 minutes
before weigh-in. CYC was busy on Sunday,
July 26 as the fishermen cast their lines with
the Star sailors racing in the background. The
targeted species was 35-50 lb white sea bass
that were swimming under the boats at Big
Rock and ignoring all the baits offered.
Thank you to the CYC members who
got up at 5 a.m. to help bring the trophy
home. Nat, Gabe, and Stephen Carlson with
Cesar Chavez on the Evening Star caught a
sand dab. George Kaneko and John Wilkins
from CYC also participated. Penelope
Cornwall donned her fishing gear and fished
along with Harvey Silver. Also from CYC
were Jorge Yamzon and Donald Wressell on
Git-R-Done. The ocean was alive with bait
making it very difficult for the fishermen to
catch fish with their bait and the hidden
hook. But we did it!
Second place was for a 3 lb. 9 oz. Calico
bass caught by Scott Baxter on Bali-Anne,
DRYC. Third place was last year’s winner
Keith Lambert with a 2-lb. 8-oz. sand bass on
Ramblin, DRYC. Fourth place was Gary
Mohilner with a 2-lb. 6-oz. salmon grouper
on Unreel, DRYC. Fifth place was Larry
Silver with a 1-lb. 11-oz. calico bass on
Diver Gent, DRYC.
Thank you to Chef Hector for the
fabulous Cuban buffet and margaritas.
Thanks to the staff and a big thank you to
Randy Sprout who organized the multi-yachtclub
event and the prizes of elegant framed
photos, fishing poles and reels to those who
caught the five biggest fish. Nine boats and
40 fishermen enjoyed the beauty of Santa
Monica Bay teeming with dolphins, seals,
and pelicans all competing for the white sea
bass. With the zing of the fishing reels and
the sailboats racing in the background, it all
made for a glorious day at CYC. And we got
our trophy back!
4th of July
Dinghy Cruise
By DON ROTHENBERG
The 4th of July got off to a good
start as 48 CYCers gathered at
noon in their colorful and
patriotically decorated dinghies to cruise
to El Torito Restaurant for lunch. George
and Pati Etter led the parade in style in
their Duffy party boat as we made our
way to the New Del Mar slip at
Fisherman’s Village, a few steps away
from the restaurant.
A plentiful selection of food was
offered along with unlimited margaritas,
which made for a rousing good time.
Our group was seated at one end of the
restaurant in an intimate setting, which
allowed for socializing as we pigged out
on our bountiful platters of food.
At one point, when the group had
consumed a sufficient amount of
beverage, Lola Haag led us in a robust
version of “God Bless America.” I don’t
know if others in the restaurant joined in,
but I’m sure we could be heard from one
end of the marina to the other.
After lunch we waddled back to our
dinghies and paraded around the marina
with music blaring, to the waves and
cheers of other boaters enjoying the day
on their own boats.
The pictures tell the story – it was a
fun way to celebrate the founding of our
country and a happy lead-in to the
beautiful fireworks later that evening.
Our thanks to Don Rothenberg, chairman;
Maureen and Bill Tieman, committee;
and George Etter for making the
arrangements at the New Del Mar slip.
July Concert Features BMQ
16/BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2009
By LINDA PECK
July’s well-attended Concert on the Green featured the Blue Morning Quintet
(BMQ) with Dr. Randy Ross on alto sax, Greg Broadous on piano, Marion Newton
on bass, Ricardo Mowatt on drums, with vocals provided by Linda Miles.
The tune list included jazz standards such as “Blues by
Five,” “Four” (Eddie Vinson), “Minority” (Gigi Gryce), “Blue
Bossa” (Kenny Dorham), “Take the A Train” (Bill Strayhorn),
“Green Dolphin Street,” and Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream,”
one of many compositions dedicated to the jazz (be-bop) patron
Baroness Pannonica (“Nica”) de Koenigswarter.
To diversify the evening's musical moods, BMQ performed
their versions of the pop tune, “Goody Goody,” and, a la Phil
Woods, the group underlaid a waltz version of “Willow Weep for
Me” with the background from the Miles Davis tune, “All
Blues.” In a tribute to romance, BMQ also performed their unique arrangement of the
ballad, “You Don't Know What Love Is” (...until you
know the meaning of the blues).
Speaking of the blues, the great singer Linda Miles
spiced both the first and second sets with some earthy,
downhome blues, including moving renditions of
“Stormy Monday” and a few Billie Holiday tunes.
BMQ ended the concert with their fun, rousing
hip-hop version of Charlie “Yardbird” Parker’s tune,
“My Little Suede Shoes.”
SEPTEMBER 2009 BREEZE/19
This summer has been one filled
with both great accomplishment
and new experience. Over the past
month I have sailed two regattas, the
U.S. Youth Sailing Championships in
Greenwich, Connecticut, and the 470
Junior World Championships in
Thessaloniki, Greece. The regattas were
very different but served to be equally
amazing adventures.
A few days after my high school
graduation, I boarded a plane headed for
New York. The next day I arrived at
Indian Harbor Yacht Club and got my
charter boat. That’s when things really
began. The first day of the
championship, we were not allowed on
the water so my skipper, Stephanie, and I
changed out some parts on the boat and
went over our settings for each of the
wind ranges. I had not sailed on the
Long Island Sound before but I had been
told to expect very light air. For the most
part, we were not disappointed. We
sailed very well the first three days of the
regatta, and sat with a 14-point lead over
the second-place boat. Thus far
everything had gone according to plan;
our boat speed was good as was our
decision-making. And when one went
wrong, we had the other to bail us out.
However the fourth day proved that
things can go very wrong. It was by far
the lightest-air day of the championship
and we had trouble getting to the left
side, which ended up paying off quite
often. The wind was being tricky, filling
in and then dying to only a couple knots.
In one day, we lost our lead, tripled our
score, and dropped down to second
place. This is a harsh reality when you
have spent the rest of the time
comfortably in first. Our goal that night
was to shake off the day and regroup for
the final race the next day. We arrived at
the race course the next morning and to
our delight the wind was up. I was fully
out on the trap and Stephanie was hiking.
These are our favorite conditions. That
day we donned a favorable attitude and
just thought about going fast, no
pressure. We started at the committee
boat and chose to play the fleet which
was going left; better to lose a few to the
right than lose the whole fleet to the left.
This strategy was the safest and put us
just out of the top ten at the windward
mark. We did a jibe set and started to
work on catching a few boats downwind.
At the leeward mark we had barely
cracked the top ten. The regatta leaders
(Kevin Laube and Reece Bernet) were
close behind us, so we made sure to keep
an eye on them while still doing our own
thing. We held our spot to the next mark
and Kevin and Reece rounded right
behind us. Stephanie and I were able to
work our boat down, gaining speed and
distance on each wave. We jibed away
from the other pair and didn’t see them
again until close to the finish. We
finished 6th that race, and as I looked
back to count the boats between us and
the boys, it became clear the there were
enough boats there to put us into the
regatta’s first-place position. In our joy,
both Stephanie and I started to scream,
fist pump, high five etc., until about
three seconds later she pulled me into the
water and the boat flipped over. It was
truly a happy day, and one of those rare
moments you experience when you
know all your hard work has paid off.
My thanks to the Santa Monica Bay
Sailing Foundation, and John
Vandemore, our coach for the regatta, for
without their support, my part in this
victory would not have been possible
Fresh off this win, I set my sights on
Greece and the challenges we had in
store for us there, as we were new to this
boat and this was to be our second 470
competition. I arrived in Thessaloniki,
the country’s second largest city, and was
pleasantly greeted by temperatures in the
nineties, and a boat that is known for
requiring copious amounts of boat work
i.e. standing around in the sun fixing
little details. This trip marked the first
time I sailed on another continent. In
Europe, sailing is a little different. The
common language between most of the
competitors is English, but out on the
race course, the girls just tend to scream
a sort of high pitched warning. I am told
the men’s fleet is a little more civilized.
Stephanie and I spent four days training
with the teams from Finland and
Argentina to try to get ourselves up to
speed. The 470 is an incredibly technical
boat, and many of the people in out fleet
were veterans, having done three, four,
or five Junior World Championships. For
us, this regatta didn’t come with
expectations or preconceived notions
about how we would finish, because
frankly we didn’t have a clue about the
outcome. That said, we definitely had
moments of brilliance. The second race
of the regatta was sailed in winds
between 18 and 22 knots. We started at
the committee boat, went right, and
rounded the top mark first, a position we
were able to hold until the end of the
second upwind of our inner trapezoid.
Just before the mark, the Spanish girls
were able to work themselves into the
mark below us. They had impeccable
boat handling skills and technique, and
would go on to win the regatta. We
remained second for the rest of the race.
It was thrilling to know that maybe one
day, we would consistently have those
kinds of results throughout a regatta.
This summer tested my love of the
sport and showed that persistence is what
it takes to perform at the top level. I will
keep working hard in the 470, and
realize that with each day comes a new
challenge, ultimately all working toward
this winter’s Miami OCR and next
summer’s world championships in the
Netherlands.
When I talk about my plans for the
future, I cannot go on without thanking
those who have helped me in the past;
California Yacht Club, CISA, the Santa
Monica Bay Foundation, and the
CYCWA on the Horizon
By NANCY MATZDORFF and SEO JEANNE STRASBERG
MEET YOUR CHAIRMEN:
Susan Purcell: As Fleet Secretary, Web site
coordinator for CYCWA, her involvement in
Race Committee and her work at UC Irvine
Medical Center for the last twelve years, Susan
lets no grass grow beneath her feet. She and
husband, Craig, have been members almost five
years and live aboard their Hunter 44 Just Add
Wine. Their dream for the future is to do some
long-distance cruising. Susan was born in Detroit
and attended University of Michigan. She and
Craig have three children—Jeffery, 28; Michael, 26; and Kate, 24.
And let’s not forget Bailey’s Irish Cream—a four-year-old beagle.
Susan’s hobbies include jewelry making, reading, wine tasting and
paddle tennis.
One plus one equals two. Right? Now, add one powerhouse
SEO and one powerhouse SEO and you’ve got a double-barreled,
talented, innovative whammy of a combination! We’re talking
about Tracy Thiras and Norma Pratt, cochairmen of September’s
First Mates Cruise.
Tracy, CYCWA’s 2000 Executive Officer,
was born in San Diego but grew up in Hawaii
where she graduated from Iolani High School.
After arriving in California, she attended UCLA
and received her degree in business administration
and became a CPA. She and husband, Chuck,
have a wonderfully blended family of five and are
proud grandparents. Joining CYC in 1977, she
has been involved in a myriad of activities: writing “Tracy’s
Travels” for the Breeze, editor of the Breeze, and chairman and/or
cochairman of many great parties and cruises. Tracy grew up
boating; and although Chuck is a dedicated landlubber, he learned
to enjoy their boat as much as she. Her husky, infectious laugh and
sincere warmth have endeared her to all of us.
The beautiful state of Maine has stunning
scenery, wonderful clambakes, a magnificent
shoreline and, furthermore, is Norma’s birthplace
– in the little town of St. Agatha. She attended
nursing school in New Brunswick, Canada and
took further training in Quebec and Nova Scotia.
Moving to Florida (no more Maine winters!) after
graduation, she soon became manager of the
Intensive Care Unit at a large hospital. After a
divorce, she moved to California with her two sons and worked at
the National Health Institute in cardiac rehab, teaching lifestyle
modification to cardiac patients. Wanting a less stressful
occupation, Norma became a real estate agent and was named
“million dollar lady” after her first sale. She also met and married
Bob. Whatever Norma tackles becomes a rousing success, and her
broad smile and cheerful attitude ensure that working with her on
any project will be a pleasure.
U.S. Optimist
Dinghy Association
West Coast Championship
24/BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2009
By DOUG WEITZ
CYC proudly hosted the first USODA
National Team Trials Qualifying
Championship of the year, which
attracted 40 young Optimist sailors primarily
from the West Coast, 20 of which were CYC
Juniors, and one from as far away as
Auckland, New Zealand.
Winds were generally light throughout
the event, but that did not hamper PRO Rick
Turner and his ace team from completing
eight races with a couple of square meals and
some added layers of sunscreen in between.
CYC Juniors took three of the four top
spots in the Championship Fleet with Cooper
Weitz winning both the Overall and Blue
Fleet; Frank Dair scooping up a 3rd Overall
and 1st in White Fleet; Kathryn Hathaway
taking a 4th Overall, 2nd in Red Fleet and
1st Overall Girls; our rising star Kaili
Campbell with a 10th Overall and 2nd in
White Fleet; and Oli Stahli wrapping it up
with a 13th Overall and 3rd in Blue Fleet.
The top 11 finishers also earned
themselves a qualification to the U.S. Team
Trials, which included Cooper Weitz, Frank
Dair, Kaili Campbell and Simone Staff.
Let’s cheer them on as they prepare for the
Trials in Houston next May, where they will
have the opportunity to make the U.S.
National Team and earn an invitation to one
of several high-level international events.
Last, but certainly not least, three of our
Juniors won special awards for exceptional
achievements. Leo Dastur was honored as
the “Most Committed,” Dylan Vechionne
received the “Sportsmanship” award, and
Maarten Hesseling was presented with the
“Outstanding Performance” award. If you
are not sure who they are, just look for the
three kids with the really cool Oakley
sunglasses.
Finally, a very special thanks to Marylyn
Hoenemeyer and the Sail Committee for
making this event a reality, Tom Leweck for
his weather recap and daily reports, Bill
Stump for his wit, wisdom, and on-the-water
judging, and to all the dedicated and tireless
volunteers who always jump in to make our
Junior events so special.
The Breeze wishes to apologize to
Tim Clarke and his wife, Lara Lundstrom, whose names were
misspelled in the August New Members column.
Perhaps it was the excitement in the air since Tim and Lara
chose to have their wedding at CYC… By the way,
congratulations on your special day and best wishes!
