THE INTELLIGENT CLIP

Based on clinical feedback, 3M Unitek has combined advanced materials engineering
with sophisticated mechanical design to develop an even more effective self-ligating
bracket system and has improved the unique self-ligating clip mechanism. The
SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating Appliance System now uses less force to give your
patients more to smile about.
TRuE SELF-LIGATING BRACKETS
With no moving latches or doors, SmartClip SL3 brackets are true
self-ligating brackets. The familiar twin design allows for selective
engagement, giving the Orthodontist added control during treatment.
Also, the traditional tie-wings provide easy application of auxiliaries
for space closure when desired. The open slot concept was designed
with patient hygiene in mind because it facilitates easy cleaning; this
helps reduce problems caused by plaque build-up often associated
with other ligation mechanisms.

MuLTIPLE PRESCRIPTIONS AvAILABLE
The SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating Appliance System is offered in the
MBT System prescription, as well as Ricketts* (High Torque) and Roth*
(Low Torque) prescriptions, giving Orthodontists the option to select
the treatment philosophy that works most efficiently in their
practice. Alternatively, individualized treatment based on the
diagnosis of each patient can be prescribed via components from
the three prescriptions utilizing the Variable Prescription Orthodontics
(VPO) concept.

MOLAR BRACKETS
Re-designed to better serve Orthodontists’ needs, SmartClip SL3
Molar Brackets have small low profile tie-wings for increased
treatment flexibility. The enhanced design accommodates either
steel ligatures for lacebacks and tiebacks or AlastiK Ligature
Modules. The maxillary 1st molar brackets incorporate the distal
offset into the bracket base rather than into the slot, improving
archwire retention during treatment.

SySTEM COMPATIBILITy
For the benefits of self-ligation and an aesthetic appearance, the SmartClip
SL3 Appliance System is fully compatible with our Clarity SL Self-Ligating
Appliance System and can be used together in treatment to meet patient
requirements.
SmartClip SL3 Molar Brackets

THE THIRD GENERATION vS. THE PREvIOuS SMARTCLIP TM APPLIANCE
Compared to earlier SmartClip Appliance versions, the advanced SL3 clip significantly reduces wire insertion forces
and removal forces required for large wires. The clips have more room to flex, making them more forgiving to wire
misalignment, thereby helping to minimize patient discomfort. Mechanical testing confirms that the new clip incorporated
in the SmartClip SL3 bracket generates less force than its predecessor during insertion and removal of large, rectangular
stainless steel archwires. The data shows a decrease in the force required to engage and disengage a .019 X .025 stainless
steel archwire for the new clips.

SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating Appliance System
The enhanced SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating Appliance System from 3M Unitek includes a third-generation
self-ligating clip, redesigned molar brackets and two additional prescriptions. Compared to earlier generations
of SmartClip Appliances, the advanced SL3 clip uses less force so Orthodontists can provide their patients even more
comfort and efficient treatment.
SmartClip SL3 Molar Brackets
SmartClip SL3 Molar Brackets have been re-designed to better serve orthodontists’ needs. With the addition of
small, low profile tie-wings for increased treatment flexibility, the enhanced design can accommodate either steel
ligatures for laceback and tiebacks or AlastiK Ligature modules. Also, the maxillary 1st molar brackets incorporate
the distal offset into the bracket base rather than into the slot, improving archwire retention during treatment.
SmartClip Appliance Wire Insertion and Disengagement Instruments
The SmartClip SL3 Appliance System incorporates specially designed insertion and disengagement instruments
to aid with the wire handling and thereby improve patient comfort. There are two insertion instruments, one for
.018 and one for .022 slot users. The single point end is designed for use with light wires while the torquing key end
is designed to assist with proper alignment of rectangular wires during insertion.
SmartClip Appliance System Hybrid and Dimpled Archwires
SmartClip System Hybrid Archwires provide a precise rounding of the corners of rectangular archwires to blend
the power of a rectangular wire with the reduced binding of a round wire. The hybrid archwire design improves
archwire sliding mechanics by reducing binding and notching without compromising archwire integrity. This can
result in easier wire insertion/disengagement.
SmartClip System Dimpled Archwires simply prevent the archwires from walking. Dimpled archwires restrict
archwire drift, thereby reducing the possibility of patient discomfort. Usable in all treatment scenarios, dimpled
archwires reduce or eliminate the need to cinch the archwire behind the buccal tubes.
The APC Adhesive Coated Appliance System
With the APC Adhesive Coated Appliance System, orthodontic bonding has never been simpler or more
efficient. The APC System reduces bonding variables and steps by precoating the brackets with adhesive, and
delivering the brackets in individually-identified, hygienically-sealed packages. SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating
Appliances may be ordered with APC II Adhesive or APC PLUS Color-Changing Adhesive with fluoride, or
without adhesive coating.

The SmartClip SL3 Self-Ligating Appliance System is offered in MBT System prescription, as well as Ricketts*
(High Torque) and Roth* (Low Torque) prescriptions, giving Orthodontists the option to select the treatment
