TEACHING & LEARNING; FAITH & LITURGY
Mr Malcolm Joseph - Deputy Principal Mission
Year 12 Retreats
During the last week of Term 2 Year 12 students went on retreat to engage in reflection, dialogue and games.
Students also had the opportunity to attend Reconciliation and to celebrate the Eucharist. While retreats take
place in school groupings, they are essentially an experience for the individual. The central activity is for each
individual to review important aspects of his/her life and to delve into the question: ‘What is God’s role in my
life?’ This may help them come to a greater acceptance of their God-given goodness. The activities focused
on discovery of self, challenges faced on life’s journey, relationships, values and beliefs, and the role of God in
our lives. Much of this unfolded through reflection on Scripture and the image of God as Potter.
I would like to emphasise that the students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner, participated fully in
all activities, and were unfailingly respectful and co-operative. They were a credit to the College, their families
and themselves. I sincerely hope that all students found the experience relaxing and rewarding. My thanks
to Retreat Directors Ms Pamela McKillop, Mrs Rhonda O’Connor and Mr Simon Cuckson, the House Coordinators
and all the teachers who worked hard to make this a memorable experience for our young men and
women. Please give your children the opportunity to discuss the retreat with you.
Positive Feedback from Students
• I feel that this was a great break away from home, school, TV, my phone, Facebook, etc. I feel refreshed.
• The session that helped me most was reading the letter from my parents. It allowed me to see what my
parents thought and now I can work to fix some problems.
• The Beatitudes: Affirming others and being affirmed by others contributed to the whole experience.
• The Retreat was fun; it was good to relax away from Year 12 studies. It has made me feel prepared, ready
and excited for the next Semester.
• It was helpful because it made me understand others better and to see how things affect people.
Year 11 Retreats
One of the main aims of the Year 11 Retreat is to encourage each student to respond to others as persons, to
reach out to others in friendship and to work at building a community based on the message of Jesus. From a
logical perspective, doing things for others makes us focus on the positive attributes of self and others. This in
turn is likely to give us a positive outlook on other aspects of our lives. The feedback above and the following
extract, taken from the book A Canopy of Stars by Christopher Gleeson SJ, may be helpful for those who are
a little concerned about this new experience.
To hope is to risk despair
to try is to risk failure.
but risks must be taken,
because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing.
This person can avoid suffering and sorrow,
but cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love or really live.
He is chained by his certitude.
He is a slave. He has forfeited freedom.
A person who risks is free.
FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Vera Treloar - Deputy Principal, Head of Campus
Welcome to Term Three. I hope that students had an opportunity to spend time with their families relaxing during
the break. All students received their Semester One Reports at the end of last term and many students should
be proud of their academic results. Other students, however, did not work to the best of their ability and should
endeavour to improve upon their results this Semester. Our dedicated staff are keen to assist all students to
improve their learning outcomes. Year 10 students should avail themselves of expert advice from relevant staff
and utilise the information provided in the showbags they received at the Senior Studies Information Evening to
carefully select their 2013 program.
It was a pleasure, once again, to observe Year 11 students during their Presentation Ball dance lessons held
on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. These young men and women are preparing for a wonderful evening
celebrating with family and friends and an opportunity of displaying their dancing skills. I look forward to attending
the functions in August.
Year 12 students are to be commended for the exemplary manner in which they conducted themselves during
Retreat. I was fortunate to visit each group at Forest Edge and Yarra Junction. The students were engaged,
participating in each session with enthusiasm. Thank you to all staff in attendance. Your efforts in preparing and
conducting the Retreat ensure a successful and meaningful faith program.
Parents, I ask for your support regarding transport. You are reminded that students are NOT to be collected on
College grounds. No vehicles are to park or stop in the bus bays and visitors’ parks are not to be used to drop
off or collect students.
The buses provided for students to and from school, are allocated based on applications received at the end of
the school year. This is an indication of how many seats we need to provide on any given bus route. Students
have been given a bus pass that identifies to which bus they have been allocated. Students will not be allowed
to change buses or travel on any other bus, except the bus for which they have a pass.
Students are to carry a valid bus pass with them on all occasions. Students who have lost their pass must bring a
parent note and $5 to obtain a replacement. Students who have left their pass at home must obtain a temporary
bus pass from the Front Office prior to travel. This must occur either before school, at recess or lunchtime.
Please note that bus drivers will be asked to decline transport for students without a pass.
With nearly 600 students accessing our buses, the only effective way of checking that students are boarding the
correct bus is their personalised bus pass. Please regularly check that your children have their bus passes when
they are leaving in the morning, or ask them the night before when they are packing their bags.
YEAR 10 IMMUNISATIONS
Due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances the Year 10 immunisations were
once again cancelled.
The new date is Tuesday August 21, 2012.
This immunisation is for Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis. If you would like to
have the immunisation sooner than the proposed date, please contact your doctor
or the Cardinia Council for clinic dates on 5945 0444.
DIRECTOR OF LEARNING/VCE - SENIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Mary Bourke
Semester 1 Reports - Why are they so important?
The teachers of St Francis Xavier College have shared their professional assessments about each student’s
progress in the first half of the school year. Judgements have been formed about the level of knowledge and
range of skills that have been learned in each subject.
The beginning of second Semester in any school year provides all students and their parents, the opportunity
to reflect on the learning goals that were originally set, to evaluate the strategies that have been used and
to celebrate the successes that have been achieved. The sage advice of the teachers regarding ‘Areas for
Improvement’ must be considered very seriously.
The way forward means committing to working harder and to using strategies targeting some of the work habits
that may be hindering the student from achieving his or her Personal Best.
If students are serious about improving their options for and after VCE, then teachers are serious about helping
them to negotiate the challenges they set for themselves.
The following Strategy for Improvement was shared with the Year 10 Students at the Senior Studies Information
Night on Wednesday. It is now offered to students of Year 11 and 12 and their parents to consider.
STEP ONE:
Find your Semester 1 Report and read the suggestions for ‘improving your learning’ from each teacher
STEP TWO:
Identify the suggestions that appear in a number of reports
STEP THREE:
Choose 3 that you think are fair and that you agree with
STEP FOUR:
For each of these make a few notes about why this has been a problem for you in Semester 1
STEP FIVE:
Choose ONE of these concerns to work on IN EVERY CLASS for a two week period
• Think carefully – what would ‘better’ in this area look like?
• Now, make a plan for the next two weeks that will make this change happen... having trouble?... ask for
help from any of your teachers
• IT IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT that you share your progress during these two weeks with someone
whose support you value – a parent, a teacher, an older student in your Care Group.
It is human nature to start a new challenge with great intentions but as time goes on we can forget or get
distracted from our goal... so TELL someone what you are planning to do and report to them regularly about how
you are going. THEY WILL KEEP YOU HONEST!
With only 12 school weeks to Graduation and the final VCE examinations, we encourage all Year 12 students to
re-commit to achieving their personal best and to implement specific strategies that will deliver the grades that
they desire in the Unit 4 SACs and SATs.
Subject Selection for 2013
Details of subjects and the application process have been
provided to Year 10 students this week.
Year 11 students will receive information and instructions through
Care Group next week.
WESTERN FRONT TOUR 2013
Mr Ian Coffey - Organiser
St. Francis Xavier College, 2012 - Educating in Peace and Justice

FROM THE BERWICK CAMPUS
Ms Jo Rock - Deputy Principal, Head of Campus
Welcome Back!
I would like to welcome everyone back to the Berwick Campus after what I trust was a relaxing break from the
rigours of school for a little while. Everyone has settled well and have got back into the swing of school quickly.
Students received their reports on the last day of Term Two. My hope is that your child/children have been able
to sit and discuss with you their Semester One reports. I trust you have been able to offer praise where praise
is due and some constructive advice where improvement is necessary. As the new Semester begins, please
impress upon your child/children the need to be organised. The completion of all work by the due date and the
importance of a ‘do your best’ attitude is truly achievable when committing to these work habits.
House Co-ordinators will be contacting parents about students whose results were disappointing. It is hoped
that measures can be put in place at school and at home, to support these students and help them to improve.
If you have any queries or concerns about your child’s report, please contact their care group teacher or subject
teacher. Semester Two can be a fresh start with new goals and possibilities.
Correct Process for reporting Student Absences
It is fantastic to note how diligent many parents are in terms of ringing the College to inform us that their child
is unable to attend school because of illness. However, I need to remind parents that this phone call must be
followed up with a signed note explaining the absence for the Care Group teacher. This note is then filed by
the office and kept as an official document. The requirement for a signed letter explaining your child’s absence
is a directive from the State government. At the back of the student diary there are a number of absence slips
that can be filled in, signed and cut out to give to the Care group Teacher. Thank you for your co-operation and
support with this.
Bus Passes and Appropriate Bus Behaviour
There has been a significant improvement in terms of students having their bus passes with them this year. There
are daily bus pass checks occurring now, and it is obvious that the vast majority of our students are carrying their
passes and taking their allocated buses. Students are reminded regularly to check they have their bus pass with
them at morning Care Group, and if they have forgotten their pass, they can go to Student Services at recess
or lunchtime to receive a temporary pass for the day. Students are aware no bus passes will be processed after
2.00pm. Please note: We no longer issue casual bus passes to students to travel on a different bus to meet after
school commitments as our buses are at capacity.
May I also take this opportunity to remind you that every student (and their parents) using our College buses have
signed a Code of Conduct contract regarding appropriate and safe behaviour expected by all students who use
our bus service. Students who do not abide by the set of expected behaviours risk a two week suspension from
the bus, which can certainly cause disruptions to a number of people. There have been numerous reminders to
students via the Daily Bulletin, and again, I ask parents to discuss the expectations the College has regarding
behaviour on the buses, and the impact that a two week suspension from the bus would have on parents and
family.
Waterproof raincoats available at the uniform shop
The drought has well and truly broken and this year we have seen an increase in the
number of wet school days. The College has a school approved raincoat that can be
purchased at the uniform shop for $45. It is the only raincoat that is to be worn with our
College uniform. I have been informed that there are plenty in stock in a variety of sizes.
It is a smart and effective addition to the winter uniform and well worth considering as an
additional uniform item.
DIRECTOR OF LEARNING - BERWICK CAMPUS
Mrs Jo Prestia
Planning for 2013
This week saw the beginning of subject selection processes for 2013. It is important that decisions about the
future are not made lightly, but some efforts are made to inform yourselves of what is expected and how to go
about applying and submitting your choices. Information sessions for current Year 9s have already taken place
this week, while opportunities for current Year 8 students will take place in early September. Please feel free
to contact me at the College or have your child ask me if you have any questions regarding subject selections.
As we begin Semester Two, it is still the expectation that students will apply themselves to their full capacity in
order to extend their knowledge and skills across all areas. I remind all students they will once again be required
to set themselves academic goals for both Term 3 and 4 and these goals will be reviewed and sent home with
Semester Two reports. I encourage parents who have yet to return their comments on the Semester One goal
setting sheets that you please take the time to respond and have your child return the full form to their Care
Group teacher. It will be returned to you with the end of year report.
I would also like to remind both students and parents of the following:
• Semester One reports will be used to evaluate your child’s eligibility to undertake accelerated studies
offered at Years 9 and 10 in 2013. This was explained at the information nights in February.
• All Year 9 students should be in possession of the blue web preferences flyer which has personal log in
details so your child can select subjects for Year 10. These are due by 4.00pm on August 10.
• Information on subject selections for Year 10 in 2013 is available on the College website as are application
forms for VCE Units 1& 2 studies and VET studies.
• English and Maths workshops will still be offered weekly on Wednesdays and Mondays respectively from
3.30pm - 4.30pm. Students please check daily bulletin for details.
• LOTE workshops are also available weekly at lunchtime, students please ask your LOTE teacher for
further information.
• SMS messages will continue to be sent for work which has not been submitted on time, work which is
below standard and for tests failed. Parents are encouraged to follow this up with their child and ensure
work is done and submitted.
• N letters will be sent home for failed assessments if SMS messages fail to bring in the work.
• Letters will be sent home over the coming weeks to parents of students who are ‘at risk’ after the last
reporting period outlining details and procedures necessary to ensure future success.
For those of us who did not quite achieve their best last Semester, this is your opportunity, at the beginning of
a new term, to put your best foot forward and make a commitment to your academic learning. To those who did
well last semester, congratulations, keep the momentum going, extend those wings further and aim even higher.
Remember learning is forever, knowledge gives you power and skills to unlock doors to greater things. I wish
everyone a wonderful start to the semester.
Have you changed your address or phone numbers recently?
If so, it is vitally important that you provide updated details to the College.
A CHANGE OF DETAILS form
THE 2012 da Vinci DECATHLON
Mrs Jo Prestia
On Wednesday June 27, 15 of our high achieving Year 7 students travelled to St Leonard’s College in Brighton
East with Mr. Stephen Bourke, Mr. Clint Broadhurst and myself, to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon.
The Decathlon is named after Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), one of the world’s
greatest thinkers and scholars. Da Vinci was fascinated with many areas including art,
architecture, poetry, academics, anatomy, hydrodynamics, mechanical and military
engineering, mathematics and astronomy. He is considered a genius and during
his lifetime demonstrated a superior ability to perceive the interconnected nature
of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to
uncover the unknown.
The competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem
solving and creativity. Students work collaboratively in teams and compete in tasks
including engineering, mathematics, code breaking, philosophy, games of strategy,
art and poetry, Science, English and forensic sleuthing.
Our students enjoyed the day and had the opportunity to meet and compete with high
achieving students from a variety of schools. Our two teams performed well overall
with excellent results in the areas of engineering, general knowledge, code breaking,
games of strategy, art & poetry, science and philosophy. One of our teams received a
special mention in spelling.
We were very proud of our teams’ achievements and would like to
congratulate the following students for representing the College so
well on the day:
From the Berwick Campus
YEAR 9 OUTWARD BOUND 2012
Mr Peter Robinson - Outward Bound Co-ordinator
Preparation for the Year 9 Outward Bound Programme is well underway and Student Medical Forms should
now have been returned. We are in the process of checking each form. Once this has been completed we will
send them to Outward Bound Australia. Staff from Outward Bound will also check each form and may contact
some parents for further information.
Please note that students do not need to have a special Tetanus immunisation before Outward Bound provided
their childhood immunisations are up to date. They are not due for their next course of immunisations (including
Tetanus) until Year 10.
We have started the process of organising students into 19 groups for their expedition. Students were asked to
nominate four friends and we will ensure that each student has one close friend in their group. Our experience
shows that students benefit from having a close friend in their group for the first few days of the expedition,
however, it does not take long for the group to begin to work as a team and to support each other as a whole
group. Many former students have told me they made friendships during Outward Bound which are still strong
even after they have left school.
Ten Outward Bound groups will complete their expedition in the Snowy River National Park in East Gippsland
and nine groups will complete their expedition in the Namadji National Park in the ACT.
There is an Outward Bound Moodle Page for you to look at, your son or daughter can log on for you. It includes
information about Outward Bound, the clothing list and photographs from past expeditions among other things.
Please remember the Parent Information Night at 7.30pm on August 2. (This night is for parents only.
Students will have an information session during the week.) In the meantime if you have any questions about
Outward Bound please do not hesitate to contact me at the Beaconsfield Campus on 9707 3111.
FROM THE OFFICER CAMPUS
Mrs Margaret Blythman - Deputy Principal, Head of Campus
Welcome to Term 3. I hope everyone had a relaxing and safe holiday. We have now entered the second half of
the school year and progress towards the end of Year 7 is coming into sight.
This term, at 10 weeks in length, promises to be full of challenges. Our focus for this term is spread across a wide
range of learning areas and is full of inquiry based learning that will help your child to refine and improve upon
their reading, comprehension, independent and group work skills. Our Year 7 teachers have worked extremely
hard in the last Semester to provide enriched learning experiences for your child and we trust that your support
will continue this Semester.
Last Term goal setting sheets came home with the reports. These would have informed you of your child’s focus
for the term. I would ask that all parents read this page carefully and then sign the tear off reply slip so it can be
returned to the Care Group teacher.
A reminder of the following College Protocols for Term 3
Bus Travel
Students are reminded to check they have their bus pass with them at morning Care Group time. If they have
forgotten their pass they can go to Student Reception at recess or lunchtime to receive a temporary DAY pass.
No bus passes will be processed after 2.00pm. Please be aware that we no longer issue casual bus passes for
a student to travel on a different bus because of after school commitments as our buses are at capacity. If the
pass has been lost or destroyed replacement bus passes are available at a cost of $5 from Student Reception.
Students who travel on College buses have signed a Code of Conduct contract regarding appropriate behaviour.
Disruptive behavior will incur a two week suspension from the bus and as such cause great inconvenience for
parents and families.
Uniform
A uniform inspection was carried out on the first day of Term 3. Encouragingly all our students were in complete
uniform. Pages 16 and 17 of the Student Record book clearly outline our expectations. You may be interested to
know that we now have College approved waterproof raincoats available at our uniform shop $45. It is the only
raincoat that is to be worn with our College uniform.
Officer Campus Visit
Monday June 25 was recognized as the day of HIGH EXCITEMENT at the Officer Campus. This was the day
we took all our students for an adventurous journey and sneak peek at the new Campus. In the words of one
of our students, in the week preceding the visit, “We are heaps excited” and afterwards… “It was terrifically
awesome”. Students were shown the site of the new Bell Tower as well as the outdoor garden and kitchen area.
They were impressed by the soaring ceiling heights in the main classroom wing, the scope of the land and the
recent landscaping.
