A Leader in Training is someone who is 

Y9 – Y10 and wants to start the process 

of becoming a leader at kids camp, but 

not yet old enough to lead. LIT’s do a lot 

of “behind the scenes” work that support 

the overall running of kids camp, while 

still being involved with campers and 

the camp programme.

Family fun at the Nelson arts Festival 

the nelson arts festival will soon be underway 

with more than 70 awesome national and 

international acts to choose from including heaps 

of children’s entertainment. 

running over 17 days from 12 to 28 october, there 

are plenty of free and ticketed family friendly 

shows to keep all ages entertained. 

festival Director and mother-of-two sophie kelly 

says she makes a big effort with the programme 

to include entertaining children’s shows that 

young people wouldn’t normally get the 

opportunity to see in nelson. 

“i’m really happy with what we’ve got on offer 

for children this year. there’s a really good mix of 

music, puppetry, theatre 

and free events,” 

she she says. says. 

Boredom Busters has a couple of fantastic prizes to give away

Back by popular demand is a second magical 

fairytale about the grimstone family, suitable for 

children aged five and over (16 and 17 october at 

the suter). older children should make sure they 

see the adventures of alvin sputnik: Deep sea 

explorer, a one-man multi-media puppet show (24 

and 25 october at the suter). 

young ones will love kahurangi Children’s 

performers amiria grenell and tola newberry with 

their crowd-pleasing performances and songs 

(granary festival Cafe, 22 october) and the topp 

twins’ songs and stories for the littlies (granary 

festival Cafe, 27 october). 

not to be missed on the festival calendar is 

the much-loved Masked parade and More fM 

Carnivale celebrations in trafalgar street. this 

year, this massive community event is being held 

halfway through the festival at the start of labour 

Weekend on friday, 19 october. if you’re going 

away for the long weekend, make sure you leave 

first thing saturday morning so you don’t miss 

out! 

Winding up the festival in style is the Bluebridge 

founders finale on the afternoon of sunday, 28 

october. there will be age old games like tug 

of war, pony rides, traditional tucker for big and 

little kids, plus high tea for the grown ups. With a 

nautical theme this year, everyone is encouraged 

to dress up, with great prizes on offer for the best 

costume.

What you need for your bubble wants 

• 2 dowels (we cut some 48" in half...so 24 " dowels worked for us.) 

• 1 metal washer 

• cotton string ( aka butcher's twine) 

• 2 eye hooks (make sure the cord/string will fit through) 

How to make the wand: 

• first, take the dowels and screw one eye hook into each of the wooden dowels. 

• second, cut your string. one will be 35 inches long, and the second string will 

be 70 inches long. this is for big bubbles, but you wouldn't have to have the 

string that long. just double what you cut the top string to be. 

• third, put the metal washer on the longest string. 

• next, tie both strings through the eye hook. tie the shortest string on top and 

the longest underneath. 

• finally, dip the string into the solution. keep the dowels together and bring it 

out of the solution. now, slowly open it up and walk backwards. 

What you need for your bubble solution 

• 6 cups water 

• 2 cups good quality dishwashing liquid 

• 3/4 cup light corn syrup or: stir in 5-6 drops of glycerin (you can buy this from 

the chemist) 

Mix all ingredients together in a large container of sorts...an empty water bottle, 

milk jug, etc. shake everything up and let sit for a few hours. pour into empty 

bubbles containers or dishes and go wild with your bubble wands!! 

if at first you don't succeed, try again. it's worth it!

Recipe Corner 

If you’re looking for something delicious for an 

afternoon treat, whip up these Milo Muffins! 

Milo Muffin Recipe 

There aren’t many kids who would refuse a Milo muffin for morning or 

afternoon tea – or even in their lunchbox. 

This is an extremely simple recipe using readily available pantry ingredients – 

great for a last minute treat or lunchbox stash. 

Ingredients 

• 1 1/2 cups self raising flour 

• 2/3 cup milo 

• 1 egg 

• 2/3 cup milk 

• 2/3 cup brown sugar 

• 1/2 tsp baking powder 

• 60g butter, softened 

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. 

2. In a mixer or a bowl add all ingredients, then beat until smooth. 

3. Pour into muffin or cupcake papers until 3/4 full. 

4. Bake for 25-30 minutes. 

5. You may choose to make these as a quick lunchbox treat or a dessert - 

great warm with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
